This blog post delves into the key themes discussed in the episode, offering actionable advice and in-depth insights for business leaders looking to enhance their performance and achieve success.Dr. Carla Fowler emphasizes the importance of applying performance science principles to business leadership. Performance science, which draws from psychology, neuroscience, and behavioral economics, provides evidence-based strategies to optimize performance and achieve goals. Dr. Fowler highlights the importance of building a personal brand, leveraging social media, and showcasing success stories. Additionally, she discusses the superpower of scaling sales conversations to build networks and resilience. Effective sales conversations can lead to increased opportunities and a robust network. When we view high-achieving individuals, many of us often think (or say) “what is their secret?” What is that person doing differently from so many other people in business or society who are striving to achieve goals? While the answer is likely going to be different for everyone, there will certainly be some underlying themes. While we can focus on those themes, another important element is understanding what some of the common misconceptions are about goal obtainment and ways in which we as individuals or as coaches to team members can mindfully maneuver around snares. In this episode of HR Power Hour, join host Tawny Alvarez as she and Carla Fowler, Founder of THAXA, a boutique executive coaching firm that leverages the best ideas from performance science to help leaders around the globe, discuss the top five fallacies of goal obtainment.Tawny and Carla will discuss that while having a dream (or a goal) is important—more is necessary to achieve it. They will also discuss some of the tips Carla provides to executives to assist them in achieving those goals while maneuvering around common fallacies.

“I think brutal focus is the key. So, you know, often when we start to think about a performance, one of the biggest questions people come and talk to me about is like, Oh, I'm trying to do so much. I have no time. I'm trying to figure out how to fit it all in. And I think it's really interesting that when we think about performance, we often approach the problem from the standpoint of how do I do more? How do I, you know, create more time to work harder. And so, I think one of my most important tips about this is to actually start from the premise that you will absolutely not do it all.” Carla Fowlers Top Five Tips For Pursuing High Performance In Your Life1. As human beings, we remember the beginnings and the endings more than we remember what happened in between. [14:13] ~ In coaching, particularly for people who're leading or growing a business or on a deadline for results that are required, they don't want to wait six months of coaching to feel like they are making progress. Usually, by the time someone wants to go get a coach, they are ready to have the results yesterday. [16:52] ~ When we have mental clarity, it actually solves a lot of problems that might not on the surface seem connected. [22:24] ~ “We have influence, but we can't start to influence things until we actually know what we want and how we want to influence it.” [26:17] ~ Very few things are gained in a day, particularly if you're building a skillset or something that really matters. I often think about compounding. The idea of investing effort over time. It's not going to be won in a day, but I know if I start today, when I look back a year from now, I'll be in an entirely different place because of the efforts I started today. [36:22] ~ Getting started is critical, and starting at a level that doesn't immediately turn you off. Once you get started you have to figure out how to keep going. It is not uncommon for many of us to set lofty goals and make ambitious New Year's resolutions at the start of every year. However, unfortunately, those resolutions are often doomed from the outset, as our expectations can be too difficult to live up to. Research has demonstrated that only 9% of us are actually successful in keeping their New Year's resolutions and a staggering 81% quit before the second year even concludes. Shockingly, most people give up on their goals by February, achieving virtually nothing in the process. But it doesn't have to be this way. If we look beyond our traditional approaches and focus tenaciously on creating a new mindset towards goal setting, then we can defy probability and establish goals that will stay with us all throughout the year. Carla Fowler, MD PhD. founded THAXA out of a passion for performance science, where the fields of strategy, productivity, and psychology intersect. Since its inception in 2013, THAXA's scientific approach to individualized coaching has attracted a devoted client base of dozens of executives at firms ranging from large technology companies to agile startups to innovative nonprofits.
