https://youtu.be/Me3XLCOh1iM Carla Fowler, MD, PhD and CEO of THAXA Executive Coaching, is driven by a mission to help ambitious leaders perform at their best by applying the principles of performance science. We explore Carla's journey from scientist to coach and explore her Performance Framework, a science-based model that guides high achievers through four core areas: strategy, execution, mindset, and physiology. Carla explains how strategic clarity and resource prioritization drive focused leadership, and how physiological resilience and mental perspective are essential to long-term success. She also shares how she applies scientific tools to coaching engagements to help leaders build empowered teams and make high-quality decisions under uncertainty. --- Tap into Performance Science with Carla Fowler Good day, dear listeners, it's Steve Preda here with the Management Blueprint Podcast. And today my guest is Carla Fowler, who is an MD, a PhD, and also the CEO of THAXA Executive Coaching, which helps CEOs and executives with clarity, focus, growth, and support using a proprietary process based on performance science. So welcome to the show, Carla. Thanks so much, Steve. It's really fun to be here chatting with you. It's exciting to have a scientist who is also a coach because I love to combine the two and to have the scientific approach in coaching. I'm trying to do the same thing, but I'm sure I'm not mastering it to the degree that you are. So I'm all ears of how that works. But let's start with my favorite question for guests, which is, what is your personal “Why” that drives you to do what you're doing and how are you manifesting it in your practice? I love that you asked this question, Steve, because I think taking this moment, like there are often a lot of different “Why's” along the way, but for me, I think in reflection, one big “Why” was that as a young person growing up, I always looked out at the world and saw there were a lot of things you could go do. There were exciting goals that you could set for yourself. And I wanted to figure out how to go do that. That was just a very pure sort of desire that even as a young person I had. And I also was very interested, I mean, I certainly had some talents, but I wanted to know like, what could someone do? What did someone have control over? To have more agency in your life as you were trying to navigate and do all of that. And so I think for me, how this manifest was number one, an interest in science, like approaching things scientifically, because certainly my coaching practice, I look at performance from a scientific standpoint, which is to say, what are the principles that really guide how we perform and how it is received and what results we get that has nothing to do with our talent? I mean, we get whatever talent we're born with and we don't really get to control that. But when we think about performance scientifically, now we're talking about things that anyone could access that might help them improve their leadership and I really liked that idea.Share on X Like it motivates me not just for myself to say, well, these are principles I can access, but also to say, these are principles I can share with other people. And regardless of what talent they were born with, we could use them and apply them in day-to-day life and work. That would be really helpful to them. And to me, that just feels like motivating. It feels inclusive, and that's my “Why.” Wow. Okay, so let's dig in and see how that works. So these scientific principles, so how do you connect it to the work at hand? So you're talking to a CEO or an executive, you're trying to figure out what they need to do to perform better. How do you apply principles? Like you observe what's going on and then intuitively some principles flash into your mind and then you say, okay, that would work here or you have a process that you walk people through?

As human beings, we remember the beginnings and the endings more than we remember what happened in between. [14:13] ~ In coaching, particularly for people who're leading or growing a business or on a deadline for results that are required, they don't want to wait six months of coaching to feel like they are making progress. Usually, by the time someone wants to go get a coach, they are ready to have the results yesterday. [16:52] ~ When we have mental clarity, it actually solves a lot of problems that might not on the surface seem connected. [22:24] ~ “We have influence, but we can't start to influence things until we actually know what we want and how we want to influence it.” [26:17] ~ Very few things are gained in a day, particularly if you're building a skillset or something that really matters. I often think about compounding. The idea of investing effort over time. It's not going to be won in a day, but I know if I start today, when I look back a year from now, I'll be in an entirely different place because of the efforts I started today. [36:22] ~ Getting started is critical, and starting at a level that doesn't immediately turn you off. Once you get started you have to figure out how to keep going. It is not uncommon for many of us to set lofty goals and make ambitious New Year's resolutions at the start of every year. However, unfortunately, those resolutions are often doomed from the outset, as our expectations can be too difficult to live up to. Research has demonstrated that only 9% of us are actually successful in keeping their New Year's resolutions and a staggering 81% quit before the second year even concludes. Shockingly, most people give up on their goals by February, achieving virtually nothing in the process. But it doesn't have to be this way. If we look beyond our traditional approaches and focus tenaciously on creating a new mindset towards goal setting, then we can defy probability and establish goals that will stay with us all throughout the year. Her unique approach combines the latest research from performance science with timeless best practices to help top performers level up and achieve their goals. In part one of their conversation, Dr. Fowler shares:- “I often like to look at a goal rather than saying, "Oh, this is a mark I must meet, or I'm going to feel bad about myself.” To say,  this is a challenge I'm setting out for myself. I am going to try to meet it, but the point of the exercise is what am I learning trying to get there?”- “… performance discounting is where you look at all the stuff you accomplished yesterday or maybe over the past year and you're like, “Yeah, that was fine. That was great. But I haven't done anything yet today. What about next year?”  You basically have taken all that effort and the things that felt like big accomplishments, and WERE big accomplishments, and you just discount the heck outta them.”- “ … one of the fundamental principles of performance that I work with people on is this idea of brutal focus because I believe that, the gains and results they're gonna produce in the future are more likely going to come from simplifying and from making more potent what they choose to do versus saying “I gotta work harder and I gotta put more stuff on my plate.” - “This idea that we can just go from goal to goal to goal and always have a hundred percent surety about what the next goal should be, I think is kind of a fallacy.”- “When we can run some experiments and actually say, "How does this (goal) make me feel? Is this goal bringing out better effort from me? Is it keeping me focused and on track more? Has it made it clear what are the small steps I need to do every day consistently to keep moving in the direction that I want?”  Those things can be really powerful about goals.”Dr. Fowler has graciously gifted listeners with a free download, The 8 Biggest Mistakes People Make When Choosing a Coach (and how to avoid them!). Be sure to connect with Dr. Fowler on  Linked In and TwitterWhat came up for you as a result of this conversation?  Let Linda know by going to Normal-Lies.com and leave a review.  Linda reads every one and every month, she chooses one review to read on air.  Who knows, she may choose yours! If you have a question or a topic you'd like addressed on an upcoming episode, go to Normal-Lies.com and click the contact page to send Linda a message. Dr. Carla Fowler is an MD, PhD and elite executive coach. For the last decade, she has been a secret weapon for scores of CEOs, entrepreneurs, and other senior leaders. Carla's unique approach combines the latest research from performance science with timeless best practices to help top performers level up and achieve their goals. What problem do you solve? How do you think about improving your performance when the answer is no longer “I just need to work harder.” Show Notes: High performers do some things differently They lean on compounding. It's the idea of doing something small consistently over time. The growth is small to begin with but then it grows exponentially. Performance Science Ideas that affect your strategy (picking the right thing to do) Ideas that help you execute more efficiently Mindset Brutal focus is important.  How can you become more focused? You may need to really examine things and then stop doing some things. Cultivating power/influence is another important area. This is creating visibility. Use your network and resources. You could have the best product/service but you need it to be visible. Learn how to relish uncertainty because that is generally where opportunity lies. It's easier to relish uncertainty if you can adopt a mindset of abundance. Have a mindset of always growing and always learning. You may need to think of opportunities as experiments. You can decide if you want to go with them based on risk and possible return. Carla Fowler's Recharge Round What habit do you think has led to success in your life? She looks around to see the most challenging thing and then commits to how she is going to figure it out. Practically, she takes time to think and plan every day. If you had one do-over, what would it be? She overthought her possibilities in rowing and literally held on with too tight a grip and caused issues. Her lesson was to hold on to things more loosely. Knowing the exact outcome of any decision is something that many people wish for. Thankfully, life often does not allow this, or else we'd probably be bored out of our minds. In this episode of the Peak Performance Selling podcast, our host Jordan continues his conversation with Dr. Carla Fowler MD PhD about uncertainty, intentionality, and the one thing that successful people have in common.  HIGHLIGHTSUncertainty is part of what makes life more interesting Peak performance does not always mean working to the bone Be intentional in setting the pace of your work What do you do during your golden hours? What all successful people have in common  QUOTESDr. Carla on why uncertainty is not inherently bad: "If we're going to play a game, and if we already knew that you we're going to win, we wouldn't play the game. We'd be like, 'This is boring,' right? It robs the excitement."Dr. Carla on the one common thing about successful leaders she worked with: "I can recognize patterns that I want to go learn from, like who is really excelling at their field. And I will say, one thing that was very clear to me is that these leaders had very good clarity and the ability to communicate what results really matter here." You can connect with Dr. Carla and their work in the link below:LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/carla-fowler/Website - https://www.thaxa.com/ If you're listening to the Peak Performance Selling Podcast, please subscribe, share, and send us your feedback.LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jordanbenjamin/Website - http://mycoreos.com/Podcast - https://www.mycoreos.com/podcastEmail - Jordan@MyCoreOS.comTwitter -https://twitter.com/jbenj09

As humans we prefer homeostasis. It's always easier to stay in your comfort zone. But as any self-made rich person might take you out, you need to take some risks. In this episode of the Peak Performance Selling podcast, our host Jordan Benjamin talks to THAXA's Managing Director, Dr. Carla Fowler MD PhD about the universal grind mindset and applying that to the 1-3-9 framework to figure out your company's goals and how you can boost performance.  HIGHLIGHTSTry to push yourself a little harderApplying the universal growth mindsetAdvice for executives wanting to boost performance Learn how to relish uncertainties Don't be afraid to run experiments Follow the 1-3-9 strategic framework QUOTESDr. Carla explains that the growth mindset applies to all aspects of life: The growth mindset isn't limited. You don't just get one bucket of it. You can use it in all areas of your life. It might take some thinking to kind of like transfer it but you can just say, ‘Hey, look at how capable I am over here.'"Dr. Carla discusses the need to make your work visible in the workplace: "A really interesting thing about influence is you can produce great results, but if people don't see them, it's like they didn't happen. And so the second piece is helping make your results visible. Sometimes that's some self promotion, sometimes that's making sure that the right people see it." Dr. Carla introduces her format for applying Performance Science Principles: "The 1-3-9 strategic framework is just a way to really clarify and distill it so it's like a one-page visual that they can look at and say, I know what my goal is, which is the one. I know what are the three most important critical priorities — think of those as the big gears that really drive you forwards. And then the nine is where we capture some of the detail in those priorities." You can connect with Dr. Carla and their work in the link below:LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/carla-fowler/Website - https://www.thaxa.com/ If you're listening to the Peak Performance Selling Podcast, please subscribe, share, and send us your feedback.LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jordanbenjamin/Website - http://mycoreos.com/Podcast - https://www.mycoreos.com/podcastEmail - Jordan@MyCoreOS.comTwitter - https://twitter.com/jbenj09

Dr. Carla also shares some best practices for effective goal-setting, and why you shouldn't set a goal that you know you can easily meet.  HIGHLIGHTSWhat is performance science? Top 3 common mistakes that leaders make Focus is essential to creating a successful process Best practices for effective goal-setting  QUOTESPerformance Science, according to Dr. Carla: "It is the multidisciplinary field that covers all of the different ideas and science that talk about how as human beings we do our best work or produce the best results. It has its origins in athletics -- that was one of the first places where we were really measuring performance. But pretty quickly, it merged into areas like the operating room, the cockpit, or the military."Dr. Carla on the most common mistake that leaders make: "Particularly as a leader if what is the goal is not clear, it becomes really challenging [not only] for your team to know how to win, but also for your team to judge their progress." You can connect with Dr.

Carla Fowler, a DOUBLE DOCTOR (MD & PhD), believes you need to run good experiments in order to be a peak performer. A good experiment has two characteristics: 1. Look at the upside: what do I stand to gain, and what do I stand to lose? Ideally this scale is skewed in your favor where the potential for gain is significantly higher than the cost and potential of failure. 2. How am I going to learn something from this?  No matter how the experiment goes, it's important that you are ready to take away some learnings and apply it to future experiments and to be able to apply it to improve your own performance (or that of your product, family, team, or business). We covered so much ground and had such a great conversation in this episode, I know you'll love every minute of it!Carla has a special gift for my listeners!
