Happy Tuesday! Today Jennifer and Alex talk local news and events!
At Ironman Coeur D'Alene, on a brutal day with temps over 100 degrees that caused an attrition rate of 27%, Jennifer Vollmann battled the elements, dug deep, executed her race plan brilliantly, and made her Kona dream come true! Can you say GRIT?! And to do it in front of her cheering 6-year-old daughter, stepdaughter, and partner was truly amazing. Jennifer felt she had lost a lot of who she was after leaving her job as CEO of an education nonprofit to stay home with her daughter. She loved being a mom, but didn't know who she was anymore. "Triathlons gave me a place to put my energy and rediscover who I was. I am not kidding when I say it changed my life. I am a different person because of it. I am a better mom, friend, partner, person because of it. It is a defining part of my life and through it I have discovered so much about myself that I didn't know—my resilience, endurance, ability to push through pain to see what is on the other side." Jennifer connected with her coach and mentor, Marilyn Chychota, four years ago while doing CrossFit and lifting and Marilyn suggested giving TRI a shot. Jennifer was hooked, found her passion, and in four short years has gone from a TRI newbie to qualifying for KONA. Talk about INSPIRING! Today Jennifer also coaches athletes, helping them define and meet their goals and discover the athlete they know lives inside. On Jennifer's WHY... "She knows how hard I train, knows it's my dream, knows what a big deal it is, and for her to see me do it, it's really powerful. Powerful for her because she is so proud of me and got to see that my dreams came true with so much hard work and with time and tears and sweat and she saw that come together and I can't think of a better experience to have with your child than experiencing that with you." There is SO much inspiration in this one and I hope you all enjoy this conversation as much as we did! If you enjoy the episode, it would mean the world to me if you would rate the podcast or write a review and share feedback wherever you get your podcast groove on. If you're lucky enough to have a job now, and you've been still chasing your dream, what does your "finish line" look like? You won finance! Hooray! With everything you want behind you, what's next? Answering these questions and more are today's contributors: Jennifer Grimson from the Micro Empires podcast; Len Penzo from the LenPenzo.com blog, and our own Stacking Benjamins podcast co-host, OG. While the question seems nice and someday-ish, I think today you'll find that you're closer to "enough" than you may think. Halfway through the show we'll break from our conversation and move over to your wellness checkup. Like Suze Orman said (in a number of words), what do riches mean without your health? During this week's middle segment, we take a quick break from FinTech to cover health and wellness with MetPro's co-founder Angelo Poli, who will break down how important proper nutrition really is - both for your health AND your bottom line. What's your next step when you're at absolute zero? No cash, no residence, no job? That's what our contributors have been tasked to help with today, and our special guest Jennifer Grimson is the perfect person to ask. Jennifer has had to start from zero... TWICE. Today Jennifer and our panel share what you should do when you find yourself starting with nowhere to turn. As always, we'll save some airtime halfway through for Doug's game show. Doug will start out with a freebie: The country of Nigeria commands the largest GDP in Africa. The question? How much is it?
This episode is for all of our film buffs out there! Today Jennifer interviews Barry Stevens, a Toronto documentary filmmaker and screenwriter. Barry won a drama Gemini award for The Diary of Evelyn Lau starring Sandra Oh in her first role, then switched to non-fiction, as a writer on the International Emmy-winning documentary, Gerrie and Louise. One of our favorite films of Barry's, Offspring, is a detective story where Barry searches for his sperm donor. It was viewed in 61 countries, won a number of awards, and was nominated for an Emmy! For five years, he directed the acclaimed and CSA-winning series for History TV, War Story. His most recent film is The World’s Biggest Family, a movie addressing the problems with anonymous sperm donation. Barry is active in the donor-conceived communities, hoping to change laws regarding anonymity. Our paths first collided with Barry when Jennifer interviewed him for her film Anonymous Father’s Day. Today, Venus Rising sits down with Barry for another, more personal, intellectual and enlightening conversation around his films, sperm donation, and the donor conceived family. Grab some popcorn and enjoy!
Today Jennifer brings her dear friend, Karen Hoffman, on Venus Rising to talk about her personal journey with infertility. Karen has an international background, having lived and worked on three continents. She was born and raised in South Africa, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree University of Pretoria. Karen now provides real estate solutions to local as well as international clientele. She is also the director of the San Mateo, California chapter of Polka Dot Powerhouse, an international networking organization for women. If you have a friend that is childless or struggling with infertility, we hope you find Karen's intimate story enlightening. If you and your partner are struggling with infertility, we see you and we feel with you. As women, we often find our value in our ability to conceive children, but Karen shows us that life and family are possible beyond infertility.
Today Jennifer called in to share her experience with fear and how it became a moment that would alter her life path completely. Jennifer shares her story about accepting a new role in her company to travel overseas and help open stores while her company expanded globally. Her saying yes to the opportunity caught her by surprise… normally she would be more caution but there was a flash of spontaneity that rose up to challenge her fear of leaving the US and her family to work abroad. Jennifer talks about how facing her fear changed her DNA and lead her on to a successful career as an entrepreneur. It is an amazing talk and Jennifer is full of insights about taking on risk and challenges and how the unexpected can lead you to a life of greatness. You’ve heard the term ‘impact’ from the mouths of CEOs and management from many different industries, applied in many different ways. But what does it mean to be an ‘impact maker?’ Today Jennifer shares some heart-touching stories that served as the inspiration for this podcast’s name, and she talks about how to make the connection between changing the world and what we do in our everyday lives. One of the first movements Jennifer joined with the Game Change Campaign through her church. It allowed her to make a real difference in lives around the world through the International Justice Mission. Anjali’s story about being forced into prostitution as a child and being rescued from it changed what Jennifer understood about making an impact. You can hear her story here, at 42:30. Has anyone ever told you that you changed their life? That’s what making an impact truly is. Jennifer talks about how that moment was the start of a new purpose, or rather, honing in on it. Hear Jennifer’s DisruptHR talk here. The goal of this podcast is to help you see opportunities to make an impact by sharing stories of people who are changing the world without asking for any credit for it. We’ll help you uncover strategies to use and actions you can take in your daily lives that will help change the world. If you truly want to understand how making an impact changes lives, you need look no further than the story of Tererai Trent, who is also ‘Oprah’s favorite guest of all time.’ She started as an 18 year-old mother of four in a small village in Zimbabwe. Tererai crossed continents and supported a family of 7 while ultimately earning a Ph.D. Yes, she did meet Oprah, but that’s not the most amazing part of her story. You have to hear it to believe it, so listen to the full podcast: Lewis Howes interviews Tererai Trent. Understand the power of words. Today, Tererai Trent is a scholar, humanitarian, motivational speaker, educator, author, and founder of Tererai Trent International. She’s become one of the most well know, and internationally recognized voices for quality education and women's empowerment. And she’s also written a best-selling book, called The Awakened Woman – Remembering and Reigniting Our Sacred Dreams. Oprah was a defining person in Tererai’s life, so Jennifer wraps up her show today with the woman who has impacted millions, every day. When she was asked what her legacy would be, she didn’t give her own answer. Instead, she shared what Maya Angelou told Oprah what her legacy would be, and it’s amazing. The most amazing part is, as a person who wants to influence and impact the world around you, you can have the same type of legacy. What is YOUR dream? Are you ready to learn how to increase your impact and influence to make a real difference in the lives of others, like the stories you heard today? If so, you should subscribe and leave a review. We’ll bring you weekly content that will help you be the Impact Maker you were meant to be.

Isn’t running a business like giving one pitch after another? Think about it. You’re an entrepreneur. That means you’re constantly pitching potential and existing customers, students and fans. So as intimidating as pitching an editor at Forbes or the Huffington Post may sound, you’re already doing it to some extent in other parts of your business. Landing more media opportunities will do a lot of great things for your business, like help you grow your email list, establish more street cred, and create more demand for your products and services. That’s why it’s more than worth your time to figure out how to pitch yourself successfully to media organizations and outlets. The question is: what’s the difference between a knockout pitch and the thousand other pitches that find their way into the trash? I’ll tell you exactly how. And to help me, I’ve got my friend Jennifer Berson joining me on this podcast episode. Jennifer was a lawyer working at a prestigious firm before she decided to follow her inner creative voice and start Jeneration PR, an ultra successful public relations and social media marketing firm. Jennifer shares all the amazing tips, tricks and tidbits that will get you closer to landing the podcast, blog or social media show you’ve always dreamed about being featured on. And, don’t forget to download this week’s freebie. It’s a pitch template, based on the formula Jen delivers during the show. All you have to do is fill in the blanks and you’re that much closer to landing your next big media hit. Today Jennifer is helping me answer questions like: Why is it so important that you know the RIGHT way to pitch? Where do you start? How do you position yourself as an expert without a large following or customer base? How should you structure your pitch? What are the biggest pitch mistakes? Let’s start pitching.
