With Jennifer Engbrecht of the Louis Riel School Division and Music Outside What's it like to teach music outside in the temperate zone through all seasons? How cold is too cold to learn outdoors? Can drama and movement support students' learning of complex musical elements like meter, rhythm, and form? What opportunities do outdoor settings afford educators and learners? How does the Orff approach fit into all this? Grade 2–5 teacher Jennifer Engbrecht took her students outside for all but 11 days of the 2020-21 school year, enduring all that Winnipeg, Manitoba's continental climate (with an annual temperature range of more than 80°C!) had to offer. This experience opened new doors for her and her students and led them to new creative heights. Hear Jennifer's insights and her riveting story. Guest: Jennifer Engbrecht is a music specialist in the Louis Riel School Division in Manitoba, Canada, with an emphasis on integrating the Orff approach to music education. Unstoppable Mompreneurs with Jennifer Jakobsen As moms, we can put everything and everyone else in front of our needs. There is just so much to do all of the time. Our children and partners, our businesses, and everything the household needs, need our attention and energy at every given moment. Most of the time we get it all done; somehow and we find a way. She received her degree in clinical social work in Chicago and jumped into her practice as a therapist. She and her husband moved to Phoenix, Arizona where they started their family. She became a stay at home mom and then decided she wanted to work with women in a way that felt more empowering than her therapy work. Rather than focussing on their past, she wanted to support women from where they were to moving toward their dreams. The Unique Struggles of Being a Mompreneur The ‘mom job' is 24/7, with no PTO, and is often thankless. Meanwhile, they do all the things, all the time, for everyone else. Starting or running a business has so many moving parts that are thrown into the mix with everything else. The comparison traps: comparing with who I was before I was a mom, comparing with other moms, comparing with other entrepreneurs. Being a mompreneur has its own unique struggles for which there is little support. Finding the courage to ask for help and support is just as much of a challenge as finding the support and help. The Mom-centered Approach It seems counterintuitive to put yourself first when there are so many other things and people to take care of. We often feel guilt for putting our needs before the needs of our children and business. Jennifer shares that the magic in putting ourselves at the top of our priority list is that we always come back better and everything around us benefits. We bring our fuller selves to our relationships, children, and businesses. We have more confidence and trust in ourselves when we show ourselves that we choose to take care of ourselves. We model for our children that we don't put ourselves last, just as we wouldn't want them to put themselves last. Most Common Blocks or Challenges for the Mompreneur Guilt-- ”Who am I to take away time from our family or children?” Overwhelm-- There is always too much to do and never enough time. Confidence-- “Who am I to think I can start or run a business?” Tips to be a Successful Mompreneur: Put yourself at the top of your to-do list EVERY SINGLE DAY. Make time for relaxation and things that fill you up. DO NOT WAIVER doing something for you. Slow down instead of multitasking, juggling the needs of everyone else, and putting out fires. Tune into your thoughts. Notice negative and limiting beliefs that seem to pop up automatically when we are stressed or overwhelmed. Find someone to help you identify, process, and shift from our old and harmful thoughts. Especially, all the ‘shoulds' and expectations we have for ourselves. Understand that our success or failure starts from our thoughts and mindsets. Mindset is essential. Ask for help. Jennifer's Daily Non Negotiables Strength based exercise using an online workout. From YouTube channels to get-rich playbooks, whole industries are devoted to the subject of building wealth. But few books present a clear and honest view of what it’s like to have a lot of money. Today we welcome author Jennifer Risher onto the show to share her insights on living with wealth. Early in the episode, we explore how Jennifer and her husband ‘hit the lottery twice’ by being given stock options for both Microsoft and Amazon before they went public. Jennifer then shares details about the key premise of her book: people with wealth never talk about their money. Informed by her experience of having sudden wealth, we discuss why gaining wealth doesn’t significantly change people despite it leading to feelings of isolation. After talking about how wealthy people rarely feel that they have enough, we unpack the many benefits that come from talking about your wealth. As Jennifer explains, using examples from her life, communicating your feelings about money is a solution to many relationship issues that arise from having wealth. Linked to this, we dive into how you can raise balanced children whose outlooks aren’t spoiled by affluence. Later, we touch on the role of giving, Jennifer's top advice for newly wealthy people, and how Jennifer views work now that it’s optional for her. You know that feeling when you meet someone whose values you just totally align with? That’s how I felt when I met Jennifer Spivak. We both believe that when women go after their dreams and achieve financial success, the world can change. That’s what it’s all about, right? Finding that freedom, that passion, that purpose that can change not only your own life but the lives of others. Jennifer has a truly inspiring story behind her business (and she shares it in more detail in this episode!). After escaping an abusive relationship herself (with the help of a fund she kept hidden from her abuser), she spent some time involved in advocacy work surrounding domestic violence. That’s when she realized that financial abuse created a roadblock for so many women trying to escape these relationships. Unlike her, they didn’t have access to a secret fund to help them escape their situation. From that moment on, it became her mission to put more money into the hands of more women. And that’s exactly what she’s doing with her Facebook advertising agency. She has so much to offer in terms of insight into life, business, and chasing your dreams. Follow along as we dive into the story behind her women-centered business and her tips for aspiring (and current) business owners just like you. Not only do we discuss her top tips for running Facebook ads, but we talk about essential aspects of entrepreneurship too, like why building a strong foundation is essential to any ad campaign and why setting boundaries is essential to your mental health. We talk about the importance of understanding what’s within your control (and letting go of what isn’t) when it comes to client success and why taking a holistic approach to business is best for long-term success. For those of you just starting out or feeling burdened by the beginning stages of your journey? Jennifer knows that building a business from the ground up can definitely be overwhelming at times (that’s why she strongly believes in simplifying). So, she also explains how she uses her desires to drive her business and why she runs her business on the idea of working smarter, not harder. The bottom line? Her story is inspirational. She is inspirational. What she has been able to do with her business is just incredible. There’s so much packed into our conversation regarding not just Facebook Ads but running a powerful, purpose-driven (and successful) business in general. Be sure to tune into my interview with her today! In this episode… [01:10] Welcome Jennifer! Hear her share the story behind her women-centered business. [05:20] Why Facebook Ads? (And how she trained herself to be an expert)! [07:17] Hear how she went from “the boys club” to creating a women-led agency. [09:17] Listen as Jennifer describes the biggest lessons she learned when starting her agency. [10:50] Jennifer talks about the importance of setting boundaries. [15:34] What needs to be in place before you jump into the world of Facebook Ads. [19:44] Jennifer discusses the mindset that allows her to work smarter, not harder. [23:28] Hear Jennifer’s advice to anyone just starting out (and how she got her very first clients). [26:22] How her business has grown (and where she plans to take it in 2021). [29:43] Hear Jennifer’s tip for living a life that’s better than your dreams. Quotes: “Something that I really focus on is this contextual shift between results delivery and service delivery. And the fact of the matter is because there are 5 million factors at play in terms of whether or not my clients get results. I can't ever fully own results delivery. It's literally impossible. So in trying to do that, I am setting myself up for failure.” -Jennifer Spivak “I think, for some reason, people have built up Facebook ads like this magical thing that is going to fix their business and bring in all new clients, but it is just a channel. So all of the marketing, one-on-one all of those sort of non-sexy foundational things must be perfectly dialed in, in order for Facebook to actually grow your business.” -Jennifer Spivak “A lot of times people do start their business from the bottom and work on so many different facets themselves. There may be, you know, a one-woman show for a while. And so sometimes figuring out what actually works, validating your product, looking at where your customers are coming from-- it can fall by the wayside because you're doing so many things.” -Emily Williams “I look for the easy way to do things. That's kind of the guiding light, so to speak, of how I run my business, like what would feel really good? What would be the easiest way to have this happen? So for example, you know, is it write 35 emails? Or is it spend $3,500 on ads? I'm going to spend the money on the ads.” -Jennifer Spivak Links & Resources: Connect with Jennifer: Check out Jennifer’s website Jennifer on Facebook Jennifer on Instagram Subscribe to the Podcast: I Heart My Life Show on Apple Podcasts I Heart My Life Show on Spotify Connect with Emily: I Heart My Life Website I Heart My Life on Instagram I Heart My Life on Facebook I Heart My Life on LinkedIn I Heart My Lifers Community Email: info@iheartmylife.com Book a Call

When Author and Acquisitions Editor Jennifer Dukes Lee was in town for an event, we met up and discussed challenges that writers—especially nonfiction authors—face as they try to land a traditional book contract. Jennifer generously provides us with behind-the-scenes insight and solid action steps we can take today. She offers hope, too, that one doesn't necessarily have to boast a giant platform to find a publisher. You can hear us fine, but the sound quality is a little ethereal. Once your ear adjusts, I think you'll be fine—perhaps imagine us in some fantastical location. And you'll love meeting Jennifer. Here's a taste of her encouraging input: "All books are picked for at least two of the following reasons: large platform, great idea, and fantastic writing." "[T]here are first-time authors with small platforms that are still getting published, and I know it because I was one of them." "I think if this is really something that is in your heart and it is burning inside of you, there's really no stopping that. I think you just have to give it time to catch." Enjoy listening as we chat about her new role in the publishing world that has allowed her to sit on both sides of the table, as it were. You’ve heard the term ‘impact’ from the mouths of CEOs and management from many different industries, applied in many different ways. But what does it mean to be an ‘impact maker?’ Today Jennifer shares some heart-touching stories that served as the inspiration for this podcast’s name, and she talks about how to make the connection between changing the world and what we do in our everyday lives. One of the first movements Jennifer joined with the Game Change Campaign through her church. It allowed her to make a real difference in lives around the world through the International Justice Mission. Anjali’s story about being forced into prostitution as a child and being rescued from it changed what Jennifer understood about making an impact. You can hear her story here, at 42:30. Has anyone ever told you that you changed their life? That’s what making an impact truly is. Jennifer talks about how that moment was the start of a new purpose, or rather, honing in on it. Hear Jennifer’s DisruptHR talk here. The goal of this podcast is to help you see opportunities to make an impact by sharing stories of people who are changing the world without asking for any credit for it. We’ll help you uncover strategies to use and actions you can take in your daily lives that will help change the world. If you truly want to understand how making an impact changes lives, you need look no further than the story of Tererai Trent, who is also ‘Oprah’s favorite guest of all time.’ She started as an 18 year-old mother of four in a small village in Zimbabwe. Tererai crossed continents and supported a family of 7 while ultimately earning a Ph.D. Yes, she did meet Oprah, but that’s not the most amazing part of her story. You have to hear it to believe it, so listen to the full podcast: Lewis Howes interviews Tererai Trent. Understand the power of words. Today, Tererai Trent is a scholar, humanitarian, motivational speaker, educator, author, and founder of Tererai Trent International. She’s become one of the most well know, and internationally recognized voices for quality education and women's empowerment. And she’s also written a best-selling book, called The Awakened Woman – Remembering and Reigniting Our Sacred Dreams. Oprah was a defining person in Tererai’s life, so Jennifer wraps up her show today with the woman who has impacted millions, every day. When she was asked what her legacy would be, she didn’t give her own answer. Instead, she shared what Maya Angelou told Oprah what her legacy would be, and it’s amazing. The most amazing part is, as a person who wants to influence and impact the world around you, you can have the same type of legacy. What is YOUR dream? Are you ready to learn how to increase your impact and influence to make a real difference in the lives of others, like the stories you heard today? If so, you should subscribe and leave a review. We’ll bring you weekly content that will help you be the Impact Maker you were meant to be.
