At the heart of Ubuntu lies a deeply moving philosophy from Africa, one that weaves the very fabric of our shared humanity into a single, vibrant tapestry. This philosophy teaches us a simple, yet profound truth: "I am because we are." It's a reminder that none of us exists in isolation. Our lives, our successes, and our challenges are deeply interconnected with those of others around us. Ubuntu invites us to look beyond our individual selves and recognize that our collective well-being is fundamentally linked to the happiness and health of our community.KELLIE HACKNEY, Author, Chapter called INTERWOVEN Shared Stories, Shared Humanity FAMILY SERVICES LEADER, The Canopy. The Canopy is a non-profit organisation that provides multiple services for families, children and the community, including managing a number of community centres and halls. The Canopy operates its administration from Cameron Park Community Centre but services extend throughout the Lake Macquarie and Newcastle regions.https://thecanopy.org.au/Kellie Hackney's life is a profound narrative of resilience and hope. She writes “As I close my eyes and think of ubuntu—I am because of who we are—I envisage a beautiful woven tapestry. A work in progress, a reflection of our journeys and a witness to the journeys we share together”Overcoming early adversity, including addiction and mental health struggles, she transformed her pain through connection, belonging, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge and light. Her recovery, supported by loved ones and professionals, exemplifies the power of healing and the beauty of rewriting one's story amidst life's challenges. This principle doesn't just highlight our interconnectedness; it also underscores the immense power of belief in change and the magic of new beginnings. Ubuntu suggests that when we acknowledge our shared humanity and act with compassion and empathy towards others, we unlock the potential for profound transformation—not just within ourselves, but within our communities and the world at large.Embracing Ubuntu means embracing the belief that change is possible and that a different, more hopeful outcome awaits us all. It teaches us that through unity, support, and mutual understanding, we can overcome obstacles and move beyond our current limitations. This belief in the power of collective action and shared purpose is what fuels new beginnings and drives us towards a brighter, more inclusive future. In essence, Ubuntu is a call to action—a call to stand together, to believe in our collective power to effect change, and to embark on the journey of new beginnings with open hearts and minds. It's a reminder that in the grand tapestry of life, each thread is vital, each contribution matters, and together, we can weave a story of hope, resilience, and enduring humanity."Sacred Promise: An Anthology," curated by Dr. Tererai Trent and endorsed by Elizabeth Gilbert unites diverse voices sharing personal stories and commitments to themselves, exploring life's essence, challenges, and the pursuit of purpose. This anthology, praised for empowering women to aim higher, is an invitation to reflect on the promises we make to ourselves, urging readers towards self-discovery, empowerment, and collective change. https://www.amazon.com/Sacred-Promise-Dr-Tererai-Trent-ebook/dp/B0B54ZSJRFhttps://thecanopy.org.au/Support the showSubscribe and support the podcast at https://www.buzzsprout.com/367319/supporters/newLearn more at www.profselenabartlett.com

Not by Chance, But by ChangeIn this week's episode, McKay's focus is on change and how there can be little change in the world until we have the courage to change ourselves. He begins by looking at the advancements of artificial intelligence including the story of the development of OpenAI, a nonprofit organization founded in 2015 by tech entrepreneurs such as Elon Musk and Reid Hoffman. McKay notes that, despite the potential positive impact of AI, there are also concerns about its negative effects, and he encourages us all to learn more about this momentous change that is coming to all our lives. He also highlights the inspiring stories of Marva Collins and Tererai Trent, two women who overcame obstacles and changed their lives and those of others through education. Both women's stories demonstrate the transformative power of education and the importance of instilling people with belief in their own potential. Our host concludes by reminding us all that our belief in ourselves will do more for us and those around us than we can possibly imagine, and to put our fears aside, choose change, and rise - to become who we can truly become.Episode Highlights:Artificial intelligence and its potential benefits to humanity The story of OpenAIChatGPT and concerns about its useMarva Collins, Tererai Trent and the positive change they have made in the world The power of belief, discipline, and hard workThe transformative nature of educationEmpowering people with the belief in their own potentialEnvisioning and reframing the future for yourself and your teamSharing evidence and stories of successQuotes:"OpenAI is located in San Francisco and runs the fifth largest supercomputer in the world.""AI systems work by ingesting large amounts of data, analyzing the data for patterns, then using those patterns to do the work.""The news has reported that students won't ever have to write their own research papers again. We are excited to give you a glimpse of real Super Couples taking part in my new book "PressPlay" (available for purchase February 2023).This week's couple Allan & Lari are in the middle of a family move from the Gold Coast of Queensland to Sydney and yet, they still found time to play Chapter 2: New Couple Script!Find out how they went!Intro:The dynamic couple I get to chat to today played one of the more advanced games I've created: New Couple Script.  I don't want to scare anyone off with that caveat bc being the script writer of your life can be one of the most joyful things you do.  I believe, you are creating your life whether you consciously know it or not, so, why not sit in the Director's chair and deliberately creating? The joy of knowing you scripted that into reality can be more powerful than you know.Based on some of the work of Neville Goddard in the book ‘The Power of Awareness', he states that, “Your mind is always arranged in the image of all you believe and consent to as true.” In light of that, I wanted to create a space for deliberately journaling those images that YOU (the player) get to arrange as true.  Giving yourself space and time to actually do the work is often the only missing piece to a life well lived! Before I introduce our loving couple, there is one more inspiration for this game that gave me such goosebumps in my 20s, that I knew I had to create an exercise that us in the Western World could grow from:“Introducing the woman known for “burying her dreams”: Tererai Trent of Zimbabwe.  This awe-inspiring woman developed a list of goals for herself as a young girl living in a rural African village. Her list was buried in a piece of tin behind her home in a field where she herded cattle. Unable to go to school as a child because of being born female, she secretly did her brother's homework until her father found out and married her off at age 11.  Having 3 children by age 18 with an abusive husband, she quickly divorced him the moment the family landed in America.  Over the next 20 years, she accomplished each and every goal in her tin can: earning a bachelor's and master's degrees from WMU and completing her journey from ‘life as an impoverished African child bride to a career as an international scholar who holds a Ph.D'.  Each time she returs to Zimbabwe, she digs up the list, crosses off the achieved goal and moves on to the next one.”How awe-inspiring is that?Ok, so back to the here and now and this ideal partnering for this game, supercouple, Allan & Lari.  Their 16 years of development on themselves makes them great for this game. Having lived in many places (Japan being one of them) during their 24 years together - they are about to bound out of the GC of Australia with their 2 daughters for their next big adventure in Sydney.  So, I thought “No better time than NOW” to deliberately create into their next 5 years…Visit my website on www.inthegamecoaching.com for more information regarding the Relationship Series and the upcoming book launch of "PressPlay" in January 2023!

The Power to Rise Above - Interview with Sandy Davies

Healing with Aloha Podcast Host Deslynn Jaquias Sandy Davies had a dream of being a writer. Through the pandemic in 2020, she started to curate a vision for "The Power to Rise" based on experience with workmates. She wanted to honor incredible women and experience. She was invited to be in "Courage & Confidence What It Really Takes to Succeed in Business" book to honor her mom who was a glass ceiling breaker in the 80's. She was asked by Dr. Tererai Trent, Oprah's favorite guest of all time, to be in the "Sacred Promise" book. She's currently working on her first anthology now which includes 30 writers for "The Power to Rise Above" and will be released 2022. Deslynn Jaquias, the host of Healing with Aloha Podcast, is a contributing writer from Hawai'i. Sandy survived the loss of her brother to suicide, her parents divorced, then her mother relocated from the U.S.A. to Australia to be with her and her husband. Her mother inspired her to be who she has become as a entrepreneur and a writer. We can have tragedy and heartbreak that we don't know how we will ever get through it, but Sandy notes we all have the power to get through. Everyone's grief journey is unique without a time limit. Gotta give ourselves grace on our grief path. She shares how she processed grieving the loss of her mother. Long before writing books and launching HappyPause™, Sandy Davies was born and raised in the American Midwest in the state of Kansas. Sandy accidentally ended up in Australia, and stayed. Her mantra is it is never too late and you are never too old. An allergic reaction to a treatment for intimate dryness during perimenopause launched Sandy out of semi-retirement to become the Queensland based formulator and founder of award winning HappyPause™ Balm. As a bit of a rebel who struggles taking ‘no' for an answer, Sandy turned the lack of a simple, preservative-free natural solution for intimate dryness into her mission. The creation of HappyPause is Sandy's ‘yes.' A tiny pearl of HappyPause puts a spring back in your step. Creating HappyPause has brought Sandy unending joy in her second spring. At every chapter of life Sandy has thrived on giving back as a part of her ethos. In this HappyPause era, Sandy's Australian Pay It Forward partner is The Period Project working to eradicate period poverty. When not packaging and processing HappyPause orders and heightening menopause awareness, Sandy has turned her hand to writing. In addition to co-authoring two #1 Amazon Bestsellers, Courage & Confidence What it Really Takes to Succeed in Business and Sacred Promise, Sandy has also created her own anthology The Power to Rise Above. The Power to Rise Above brings together thirty women from across the globe who bravely share their stories of resilience to assure others that they, too, have the power to rise. Sandy enjoys helping others and spending time with her husband and their rescue dog Karma hunting nautilus shells along the fringing reefs of The Great Barrier Reef at the edge of the World Heritage Listed Daintree Rainforest. The Power to Rise Above will be available from late 2022. Connect Your Dreams to the Greater Good   What would be possible if you planted your dreams?  This week's guest, Dr. Tererai Trent, is living proof that a dream can grow even in the poorest, most oppressive of soils. Named Oprah's All-Time Favourite Guest and one of the Most Inspirational Women Alive, Tererai sat down with me to tell her story, reflect on her best-selling book The Awakened Woman, and to ask you the one question that cuts straight to the matter of what “bigger” work you are here to do on this planet.   Get ready to be moved, to be inspired, and to awaken a longing inside you to set audacious goals that not only move the needle in your business and bring your personal goals to the surface, but also connect your dreams to the greater good.    If your dreams are getting a little dusty, you're feeling a little cynical lately, or you want to be reminded of all the good there is in the world (and jump to be a part of it!), this is a conversation you don't want to miss!   What's in This Episode Tererai's incredible story of going from an 18 year old mother of three living in poverty to a Ph D., author, speaker, and humanitarian changing the lives of girls and women in rural Zimbabwe.  What ONE question to ask yourself to connect to your greater purpose Why planting your dreams is SO powerful  How Tererai's story has completely changed the conversation around educating girls in her country Why it's poverty and not culture that decides what is possible for girls How to move through cynicism and make a difference  Why your dreams matter   What To Do Next Help Tererai and the young women of rural Zimbabwe reach their goal of sending 20 students to university every year. Vermont Author Ann Dávila Cardinal, whose latest supernatural YA thriller  is Category Five (Tor Teen).  This week’s Write the Book Prompt was generously offered by my guest, Ann Dávila Cardinal. She says that it’s not a prompt, exactly, but an exercise in encouragement: Get three smallish pieces of paper.  1) On the first one, write down your short term writing goals, say for the next week. Even day by day. It can be to write 1,000 words, or finish a chapter of revision, or journal everyday for a week.  2) On the second, write down your goal for the year. Send out a certain number of submissions, finish a full draft, pull together a poetry chapbook. Whatever that looks like for you. 3) And finally, on the third, write down your long term writing goals. To be a published writer, to teach writing, to publish a book a year or every other year, to build a writing life.  Put the first one somewhere you will see it every day. When the week is over, look at it, and access how you did. Adjust your goals for next week accordingly. The second one, put it away somewhere nearby, but not in immediate sight. Somewhere you will find it over the next year and be reminded, a jewelry box, in a book you look at a couple of times a year, in the tool box. For the third one, Ann recommends doing what Dr. Tererai Trent suggests in her book The Awakened Woman, and "plant your dreams." Either in a garden or a pot you then use for a plant, or even a park. Visit the place you planted your dreams as often as you need to, but trust that you are creating "intentional rootedness." If this is too "woo woo" for you, says Ann, don't worry about planting it, write down your three levels of goals and work towards them. Period. The point is, build that writing life your way. Good luck with your work in the coming week, and tune in next week for another prompt or suggestion.   Music Credit: Aaron Shapiro

March 8 is International Women's Day, and in honor of this I'm celebrating the women who have inspired me, and I hope that their stories inspire you as well. I start with my grandmother, Mary Ann Reinstein, a Holocaust survivor who lost everything when she was young, lived through a lot of hardships, lived a life of service and never complained. I talk about my mother, Gladys Rockind, a brilliant and accomplished woman who led her college math department for more than 20 years and still raised three children and was the primary homemaker. And I talk about a current coaching client of mine. This woman is battling cancer and the way she is handling it and facing life truly inspires me. Jen Sincero also inspires me. Jen wrote You Are A Badass (https://amzn.to/2IX8c3G) and You Are A Badass At Making Money (https://amzn.to/2IWgj0I), and if you haven't read these books, you must! I pick up and reread her book whenever I need some kickass motivation. Regena Thomashauer, also known as Mama Gena, is an inspiration to me. I have learned so much from her, and I truly adore her. She has spent decades teaching women to stand in their power by connecting with and embracing their joy. I highly recommend her book, Pussy: A Reclamation (https://amzn.to/2J0EpY2). Tererai Trent's life story, her journey from Zimbabwe to poverty in Oklahoma to fighting for her own education while raising four children, is truly inspirational. Oprah said her interview with Tererai Trent was her favorite interview ever, and you can get her book, The Awakened Woman, at Amazon (https://amzn.to/2UpdTZJ). Brene Brown is another woman who truly inspires me. Her book, The Gifts of Imperfection (https://amzn.to/2EMr8NA), changed my life, shifting me from the feeling that I had to be perfect and be ashamed if I wasn't, to developing shame resilience. In this episode I ask you to leave me voicemail at http://purposegirl.com/voicemail, and tell me your name, where you're from, what you love about The PurposeGirl Podcast, and what topics you'd love to hear on this show. Could you picture your life with an orgasm every day? There was a time when I would've answered “no” to that question. And even if it were possible, and was essentially presented to me on a silver platter, I would've turned it down. But not anymore! Nope - now I'm clear - that an orgasmic state of being is the key to greater health, wealth and joy. And this is my wish for every mama out there - to walk in and basque in the glow of abundant and orgasmic bliss. Does this mean sexual intercourse every single day? Maybe, if that's what you want. But it certainly doesn't have to look like that. There are ways to tune in and turn on that have nothing to do with penetration. So in this episode, we go on an epic journey. We cover a lot of bases here, so buckle up! From the inspiration to this episode and how a sexually satisfied woman is more likely to access her greatest dreams and desires, to Fifty Shades of Grey and the culture around pornography, some of my own experience with porn, sex toys, oral pleasure, the back door, boobs and sharing your sexual history with your partner. There's no one way to mother, to create balance in your life OR to tap into your sexuality. Make it your own and feel empowered while “doing it” (ayooo!)! Hope this helps spark some ideas for ya. You’ve heard the term ‘impact’ from the mouths of CEOs and management from many different industries, applied in many different ways. But what does it mean to be an ‘impact maker?’ Today Jennifer shares some heart-touching stories that served as the inspiration for this podcast’s name, and she talks about how to make the connection between changing the world and what we do in our everyday lives. One of the first movements Jennifer joined with the Game Change Campaign through her church. It allowed her to make a real difference in lives around the world through the International Justice Mission. Anjali’s story about being forced into prostitution as a child and being rescued from it changed what Jennifer understood about making an impact. You can hear her story here, at 42:30. Has anyone ever told you that you changed their life? That’s what making an impact truly is. Jennifer talks about how that moment was the start of a new purpose, or rather, honing in on it. Hear Jennifer’s DisruptHR talk here. The goal of this podcast is to help you see opportunities to make an impact by sharing stories of people who are changing the world without asking for any credit for it. We’ll help you uncover strategies to use and actions you can take in your daily lives that will help change the world. If you truly want to understand how making an impact changes lives, you need look no further than the story of Tererai Trent, who is also ‘Oprah’s favorite guest of all time.’ She started as an 18 year-old mother of four in a small village in Zimbabwe. Tererai crossed continents and supported a family of 7 while ultimately earning a Ph.D. Yes, she did meet Oprah, but that’s not the most amazing part of her story. You have to hear it to believe it, so listen to the full podcast: Lewis Howes interviews Tererai Trent. Understand the power of words. Today, Tererai Trent is a scholar, humanitarian, motivational speaker, educator, author, and founder of Tererai Trent International. She’s become one of the most well know, and internationally recognized voices for quality education and women's empowerment.  And she’s also written a best-selling book, called The Awakened Woman – Remembering and Reigniting Our Sacred Dreams. Oprah was a defining person in Tererai’s life, so Jennifer wraps up her show today with the woman who has impacted millions, every day. When she was asked what her legacy would be, she didn’t give her own answer. Instead, she shared what Maya Angelou told Oprah what her legacy would be, and it’s amazing. The most amazing part is, as a person who wants to influence and impact the world around you, you can have the same type of legacy. What is YOUR dream? Are you ready to learn how to increase your impact and influence to make a real difference in the lives of others, like the stories you heard today? If so, you should subscribe and leave a review. "I REALIZED THE PATHWAY I WAS GOING THROUGH WAS SILENCING ME. I've learned that greatness can come from anywhere, everywhere, or anyone. It all starts with a dream, a vision. Of course one of the secrets is never giving up, but the biggest one is that it needs to be yours. You need to know that your goals are your goals, not something pushed on you by someone else. No matter where you are in your life, or what obstacles appear in your way, you can achieve it. I believe this now more than ever after sitting down with our most recent guest, Tererai Trent. Tererai was born in Zimbabwe, was forced into marriage as a child, and even gave birth to 4 children by the time she was 18. She came from a place where education wasn't an opportunity given to women. Tererai ended up pushing through so many obstacles and now had a PhD - and that's just the beginning of her incredible accomplishments. Tererai was named by Oprah as her All-Time Favorite Guest and received a $1.5 million donation to rebuild her childhood elementary school in recognition of her tenacity and never-give-up attitude. With the firm belief that education is the pathway out of poverty and a desire to give back to her community, she founded Tererai Trent International. Eleven schools are being built in Zimbabwe and education has been improved for over 5,000 children so far. And this is only the beginning. Today, Dr. Trent is invited to speak all over the world, to share her remarkable story and the valuable lessons she has learned along the way. She just came out with a new book all about empowering women to awaken to their full potential (she is the poster child of this). Her favorite motto is Tinogona, meaning, It is achievable! Discover all of that and much more, on Episode 596. Some Questions I ask: What interested you in agriculture? (16:15) What made you bring your 5 children and your abusive husband to America? Nikolai DiPippa, Clinton School Director of Public Programs, sat down with Tererai Trent, author of “The Awakened Woman: Remembering & Reigniting Our Sacred Dreams.” Before Tererai Trent landed on Oprah’s stage as her “favorite guest of all time,” she was a woman with a forgotten dream. As a young girl in a cattle-herding village in Zimbabwe, she dreamed of receiving an education but instead was married young and by eighteen, without a high school graduation, she was already a mother of three. Trent encountered a visiting American woman, Jo Luck of Heifer International, who assured her that anything was possible, reawakening her sacred dream. Tererai planted her dreams deep in the earth and prayed they would grow. They did, and now not only has she earned her Ph.D. but she has also built schools for girls in Zimbabwe, with funding from Oprah. The Awakened Woman is her accessible, intimate, and evocative guide that teaches nine essential lessons to encourage all women to reexamine their dreams and uncover the power hidden within them – power that can recreate our world for the better.

By age 18, Dr. Tererai Trent was a mother of four and she had no education. She wrote her dreams down on a piece of paper and buried it in the earth to grow. Today, Tererai has her Ph.D and she’s built 11 schools for girls in Zimbabwe where she's from. In this episode, we learn about two types of hunger. The Little Hunger, which is what you seek for instant gratification, and The Great Hunger, which is what gives your life purpose. Tererai walks us through how to identify our Great Hunger. Her new book, The Awakened Woman, has a chapter called Reclaiming your voice. I ask Tererai about her thoughts on the current paradigm shift we’re witnessing with women breaking their silence. She has a unique point-of-view on how women can choose to be accountable for contributing toward a solution versus being pegged as a victim. Tererai talks about the moment she decided to write her dreams down and bury them. Why did she do this and what was her thought-process. The question you should ask yourself if you want to identify your Great Hunger which will make your life more meaningful. What happened when Dr. Tererai went on The Oprah Show. Tererai's perspective on the current groundswell of women speaking up. What Tererai did after Oprah told her she doesn't write book forewards. (Eventually she wrote one for Tererai.) Dr. Tererai Trent is an internationally acclaimed voice for women’s empowerment and education.Hailed by Oprah Winfrey as her “all-time favorite guest,” Dr. Trent is an inspiring and dynamic scholar, educator, humanitarian, speaker, author, and the founder of Tererai International.Born in a small village with no electricity or running water in Zimbabwe (then, Rhodesia), she was married in her early teens as was the custom, had four children by age 18 and suffered repeated physical abuse from her husband.Still, she dreamed of a different reality, one that would break the generations-long cycle of poverty, early-marriage, illiteracy and disempowerment. Against all odds, she worked for 8 years to get her GED, and eventually earned a spot in college in the United States, taking her family with her, where some 20 years after beginning her dream of an education, she received her Ph.D..It was her secret additional dream to not only change her life, but to do something for the greater good that turned this into an even bigger story. Trent's story ended up in the pages of the New York Times, where Oprah Winfrey discovered her remarkable story and deeply-passionate quest to help educate women. Oprah offered to partner with Tererai to return to Zimbabwe and build a series of schools that are now raising thousands out of poverty and giving them an education and the life-changing opportunities that go along with it.Dr. Trent’s gripping story is both the topic of today's podcast, and is detailed her deeply-moving new book, The Awakened Woman – Remembering & Reigniting Our Sacred DreamsRockstar Sponsors:Thrive Market: Get $60 of FREE organic groceries + free shipping and a 30-day trial atthrivemarket.com/goodlife.RXBAR Kids is a snack bar made with high-quality, real ingredients designed specifically for kids. Big Question: How can I nurture my creative gifts?   Tererai Trent is a living example of what is possible. She grew up in Africa at a time when girls were not educated and expected to marry and have babies when they were still children themselves. She secretly taught herself to read from her brother's school books. Her mother told her to write her dreams down and bury them and they will come true. Twenty years later those dreams are more than true. Dr. Trent is a scholar and a champion of women's education. She has torn down barriers for girls and women not just in Africa but around the world. She joins us to help us nurture all our possibilities and shares her beautiful children's book The Girl Who Buried Her Dreams in a Can.

Rooted in humble beginnings, Dr. Tererai Trent grew up in rural Zimbabwe where cultural practices and a war that liberated her country charted the course of her life. Due to traditional women's roles and cultural norms, Dr. Trent did not have the opportunity to go to school. Undeterred, she still dreamed of an education and despite being married young and having three children by the time she was eighteen, she never lost sight of her dreams. Her steadfast determination and belief in her dreams eventually earned her multiple degrees, and a prominent global platform with world leaders and international businesses and audiences where she advocates for universal access to quality education. A two-time guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Dr. Trent was named by Oprah as her “All-Time Favorite Guest” and received a $1.5 million donation to rebuild her childhood elementary school in recognition of her tenacity and never-give-up attitude.
