"There was a guy in my office for years, who used to refer to people like me as hobby farmers. And it drove me crazy. One day I finally said, “You know what? These hobby farmers, if they are getting up every day, and taking care of animals, it's not a hobby. A hobby is something you do when you feel like doing it.” Karen Hoffman started working for Cornell Cooperative Extension for a few years after grad school, and then began working for USDA-NRCS as an Animal Scientist to help dairy farmers convert to grazing more successfully. She is now the State Grazing Specialist for NY, although she still reminds folks that she's an animal scientist inside. Her farming journey began in 2011 when she and her partner Jack decided to raise sheep and beef cattle and market their meat locally. They bought a small farm and started with 5 Dorset ewes that he already owned. Much of the land needed to be reclaimed, which they did with a lot of manual labor and animal impact. On behalf of the writers of Substack, we will dispense this advice now:Don't wait for your writing to be perfect, or the time to be just right. Neither will happen. Your publication will likely be quiet for a while. Keep going anyway. Building something good takes time. The only real short cut is luck, and that’s no real strategy. Don't try to do this alone. The actual writing part usually has to be done alone, with distractions turned off and a faintly unhealthy supply of coffee to hand. There's usually no getting around that. But the part where you're coming up with ideas, or trying to think bigger and bolstering your confidence and hopes...don't try to do that just by sitting by yourself. If you need the door closed when you're writing, try flinging it open when you're not. Learn wildly. Connect madly. Allow yourself to be corrected. Being gracious in the face of criticism is a good way to take the venom out of it. And make lots of good friends who are doing something like what you're doing.  As writers, we are all in this together so we need to do our best to help each other grow and succeed. Slow and steady is entirely normal growth. Some people come to Substack with an enormous platform already. Some people grow very quickly for a variety of reasons (very few of which are actually controllable). The vast majority of us just plug along, trying different things, without ever having insane overnight success. Doesn't mean you can't be successful, it just means "slow and steady" is entirely normal growth, and success is subjective and depends on your own personal newsletter and goals.Extra slow days shall pass. It's hard but just keep writing good copy during the plateaus. They too will end.Dive deep into your niche. The average person on the street may not understand the appeal of your Substack, but you'll gain loyal subscribers and face less competition than if you go mainstream. Don't feed trolls. Don't allow them to ruin your day. Just block them and move on.Celebrate at milsteones. Exclaim: Bravo!!!!! This is awesome! Way to go! That's huge - congrats!!!Remember: engagement is not just likes and comments, but also conversations between you and your reader in their inbox. Ask questions. Propose ideas. Agree. Disagree. Burnout comes up a lot in the physician's space, and for a good reason. As women physicians, we are constantly exhausted from progressing our careers while doing everything society expects of women. The good news is that with a few mindset shifts and practices, you can get out of the box of burnout and start feeling like yourself again.   If You Want To Prevent Burnout, You Should: Get clear on what your passion is and create a plan to help you go after it Surround yourself with a supportive and inspiring community Ditch the all or nothing mentality and focus on taking small baby steps towards your goals   Preventing Burnout With Dr. Karen Hoffman Karen Hoffmann, MD, FAAOA, is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery. Since joining Piedmont Ear, Nose, Throat, and Related Allergy in 2007, Dr. Hoffmann has specialized in the medical and surgical treatment of patients with Eustachian tube dysfunction, ear fullness, sinus, and allergy disorders, and hearing loss and chronic ear disease. She has successfully integrated compassionate and innovative care in private practice with clinical research and is passionate about helping others take care of themselves.   You Are In Control of Your Own Outcome Being a mother, wife, and physician, Dr. Hoffman got to a breaking point when she realized that her all-or-nothing mentality and internal dialogue were contributing to her burnout. By taking small baby steps to move away from this mentality and towards a long game strategy, she was able to change her thinking and change her life.  Now, Dr. Hoffman shows up to work every day excited, which reflects back onto her and onto her patients. By finding clients that push her out of her comfort zone and inspire her to approach medicine in a new way, she is pursuing her passion in an inspiring way.   Find Your Passion and Run With It One of the best ways to feel supported going forward in your journey is to find a community of other women and women physicians. If you don't have support, you will feel like you need to do it all. And while your imposter syndrome may be holding you back from finding a community, showing up authentically and making yourself a priority is the best way to overcome it.  The changes you will notice when you start to take care of yourself can be drastic. Today Jennifer brings her dear friend, Karen Hoffman, on Venus Rising to talk about her personal journey with infertility. Karen has an international background, having lived and worked on three continents. She was born and raised in South Africa, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree University of Pretoria. ***  What a free for all in the second hour with Pianki and later Josie, also Karen Hoffman of The Hoffman Report who stayed for about 45 minutes starting 30 minutes in.  That's the beauty of this show. ***  Karen Hoffman told us all about the origins of Q-Anon, and why people didn't have to worry about Trump, a coup, or any of the wars and deep state stuff rumored to happen soon.  That happened about 50 minutes in.  Shelby Frennette our Cruise and Travel Reporter had a great story on mad cow disease and stoppng into a Russian port.  You have to hear that starting some 25 minutes in.  Brian joined us in the second hour.  I started the show summing up the last couple of shows with us ending on Judicial Review.  I started talking today about the permanent war class, like John Bolton, and their love of war.  They wanted us still in Syria, in Venezuela, and now in Iran.  Those people are extremely dangerous.  I ended with how the Alien and Sedition Acts, particularly the sedition part, where journalists went to jail for criticizing the government, are just like conservatives today censored in Facebook for criticizing the Swamp! ***  Short answer is yes it should be scrapped.  But how you get there is an incredible story of greed, bean counters, skirting the rules and traditions, not wanting to design a new aircraft, not wanting to certify pilots to fly a new aircraft, a bad design, and unstable airplane, and engines that are too big and too close to the ground.  Boeing has gone from a company that was run by aeronautical engineers, other engineers, pilots, and people that loved building airplanes.  Now they farm out work, they are fun by bean counters, it's all about saving money and doing whatever it takes to barely comply with the regulations, when they used to exceed them by far.  Brian from Pennsylvania joined our reporters in the second half hour.  Karen Hoffman with The Hoffman Report was on 30 minutes in, and Shelby Frennette with Travel Talk was in 45 minutes in, and in the second hour I spent most of it outlining the problems with the Boeing 737.
