Broad Reach Radio - The Yachting New Zealand Podcast

Karl Budge doesn't purport to be much of a sailor, but he is one of this country's leading event organisers having previously turned the ASB Classic into one of the world's best tennis tournaments. He consistently attracted some of the world's top tennis players to this country and now he's looking to sprinkle his magic dust on the New Zealand leg of SailGP. Karl talks about why he got involved in SailGP and what his vision is for the New Zealand legs that will be held in alternating years between Christchurch and Auckland. He also talks about what the fan experience is like at SailGP events around the world. Talk inevitably turned to tennis and what tricks he used to lure players like Serena and Venus Williams, Ana Ivanovic and Maria Sharapova to these shores. He also talks about the time he gave Serena a piece of his mind after a less than inspiring performance. But she still came back the following year. Karl delves into his background that saw him leave school at 16 only to find himself working at the WTA and Manchester United, but also turn down job opportunities with Formula 1, Manchester City and the NFL. This is a slightly different episode of Broad Reach Radio, but a good way to mark the 50th podcast.

Having spent some time as the fitness coach to Ana Ivanovic, he has taken stock and focused his efforts on developing the physical attributes of young emerging tennis players. He has created a fantastic programme called Tennis Supermovers which breaks down the fundamental movements required to build great physical foundations. This is now available for anyone. See the link below. https://www.tennissupermovers.com Howard and his friends have also just completed an incredible challenge for their friend who has tragically been diagnosed with MND. They climbed the 3 peeks in Yorkshire, England in 12 hours, carrying their friend on a stretcher. They are raising funds for MND and I have copied the link below. https://gofund.me/b679eef2 I could have spoken to Howard for hours on end about his time as a Marine and the transferable learning into the world of tennis. We are sad to announce the passing of two members of our Leftscape family. Alan Semok, Mary's husband, passed away on Sunday, October 27th. In this episode, Mary enumerates his many creative accomplishments and speaks from the raw place of recent loss. Known as "The Dummy Doctor," Alan Semok was a ventriloquist with a special expertise in repairing and restoring ventriloquist dummies. He was an accomplished actor and had many unique credits including performing as Larry of The Three Stooges and becoming the voice of Bela Lugosi. Tragically, Mary's beloved nephew, the funny and talented Pat McCann, also died one week before Alan. Thank you for listening, helping Mary through an extraordinarily difficult time, and honoring their lives. Considering the distressing nature of the recent events, All the News We Can Handle is on the lighter side. Stories include tracked eagles accruing outrageous roaming charges, Trump getting booed at the World Series, and a ridiculous "Florida Man" story. In a special Rewind segment, Robin and Wendy discuss Episode 60 featuring David Jamison and why Jewish people were not mentioned anywhere in the conversation on how we divide ourselves by race. The show begins in celebratory form, with mentions of National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, Saxophone Day (November 6th), National Men Make Dinner Day (November 7th), National STEM/STEAM Day (November 8th), World Science Day for Peace and Development and the US Marine Corps Birthday (November 10th), and Veterans Day (November 11th). We need to speak the same language and the language of the player is more important than my language."    Longtime ATP and WTA coach Sven Groeneveld joins the podcast in the midst of the busiest time of the year for players announcing coaching changes. His lengthy coaching resume includes the likes of Monica Seles, Michael Stitch, Caroline Wozniacki, Ana Ivanovic, Tommy Haas and Fernando Verdasco, to name a few. In March, Groeneveld parted ways with Maria Sharapova after four years of working together.    Groeneveld explains how he got into coaching, including how he got paired up with Seles in the early 1990s (05:28). The 53-year-old shares who he learned the ropes from (07:27),  what players should look for in finding the right coach (12:38) and how he has dealt with abruptly switching player boxes (19:17). He also addresses the reasons behind the fast-moving coaching carousel, especially on the WTA tour (22:12), and adds his opinions to the on-court coaching debate (24:21).    A program for teaching and licensing pro coaches doesn’t exist to his standards, and Groeneveld hopes the tours will invest in making a pathway for current playing pros to transition into coaching (26:46). He is already doing his part to connect coaches with the right players and clubs as he helped create OrangeCoach.com, a job placement site with over 20,000 registered coaches (29:39).    And finally, sourcing from his three decades of experience touring the world as a professional coach, Groeneveld shares his Top 5 career moments (32:56). Connections Leadership Series Podcast

It’s one thing to be the Chief Marketing Officer of a large business but another thing to be the CMO of the world’s largest advertiser, P&G. I really enjoyed my latest interview with Jim Stengel who is the founder of The Jim Stengel Company and prior to that had a very successful career as the Global Marketing Officer (GMO) of P&G. In his seven years as the GMO, the company doubled its revenue. In today’s terms, the revenue he brought in during his tenure is equivalent to the revenue of approximately 30 AirBnBs. He has received more awards and recognitions than one could ever dream of. From being named onto Fortune’s Executive Dream Team to being the number one power player in marketing by AdAge through 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007. If there’s anyone who has reached the pinnacle of advertising and marketing, it’s Jim. What I took away from my interview with Jim was not all of the things that he accomplished professionally, but the importance of being a good human being. He’s incredibly humble and down to earth. He admits to the mistakes that he made in the early days as both a husband and a leader. He emphasizes the importance of his wife (who is #1) and the value he places on building relationships. Jim could have stopped after his career at P&G to relax and retire. Most people would have been more than happy with what he achieved. Instead, he’s continued to make it it his mission to help businesses and people reach their full potential.  Here are some of the highlights from our conversation: Jim hustled as a child. To get a job delivering the local paper, he had to lie that he was 12 years old when he was only 10. It was the only way he could get the job. In addition to delivering the paper, he mowed lawns, shoveled driveways, worked at a pizza joint and did a lot of other scrappy jobs to make some money. His first grown-up job was with Time Inc. where he was hired into the books division.  To my surprise, Jim was actually rejected for an internship at P&G. He didn’t make the cut but he didn’t give up and eventually got hired. It was a good thing that P&G didn't make the same mistake twice. On his first job, he was tasked with the launch of a new product, Duncan Hines. He was given the task to find a way to sample to every household in the US. With a $60 million sampling budget at his disposal, he managed to hire every delivery truck in the country to help him deliver the cookies. On rookie leadership mistakes, he talks about the importance of seeing what’s around the corner and what’s ahead of you. Too many leaders fall into the trap of tackling daily operational activities but fail to deliberately spend time thinking about the future of their business. On other business advice he would give, it would be that you can never fire too fast. When it comes to people related issues, you usually know in your gut as to what the decision should be. One bad apple on a team can infect many people and it’s important to remove those people immediately.  The only time he ever considered leaving P&G was after his first year. Time Inc. called him back and offered him a job that would triple his salary. What kept him at P&G was the opportunity to learn and grow. From then on, he had a principle to never speak to head hunters.  He’s a big believer that the key to life is resiliency. People who have bounced back from setbacks in their careers or personal life. These people are often the happiest people and have lived the most rewarding lives. His WFIO (We’re F&cked, it’s over) moment happened in the second year when he was running the business in Czechoslovakia. He was the only one on the team who didn’t have share growth that year. It was the moment when he thought that his job was on the line. But John Pepper, the CEO of P&G at the time, spent five minutes with him and provided a few words of assurance that the company believed in him and that he believed that he would get through it. Jim never forgot that conversation and it changed the way he viewed his situation. He encourages leaders to never underestimate the impact that they can have on their people. And yes, the business he ran turned around and the rest is history. Jim met his wife and proposed to her only three months later. To help seal the deal on his proposal, he made her a physical scrapbook documenting their experiences together. He’s what I call a “closer”. On mistakes he made as a husband, he talks about the times in his life when he didn’t always put his wife as number one and took her for granted with work, children and other obligations. Life gets in the way but one should always put their spouse as number one.  On routines, exercise is a non-negotiable. He might sacrifice sleep or eating, but he will never sacrifice exercise. He tries to change it up all the time and will do water aerobics, tennis, yoga, a HIIT class, or something different. On the bucket list, he’s hoping to still play Roger Federer a game of tennis. He recently played Ana Ivanovic (the former number one ranked female tennis player). I took that as a humble brag. =P There’s a lot more from this interview so make sure to listen to the full interview. Either go to the SoundCloud link below or subscribe to our iTunes channel.

First, we look back at the career and legacy of Ana Ivanovic, who played excellent tennis at times and was a joy to be around always. We discuss the role she plays in our separate and joint tennis origin stories, and what made her such a welcome presence on tour. Then, Ben chats with Auckland tournament director Karl Budge about running a tournament that has attracted increasingly star-studded fields (including Serena, Venus, and Wozniacki this year), and the differences between running ATP and WTA events. Then we get into the meat of the show, which is our annual nostalgia trip known as "Remember When...?" It's so meaty this time that we need to carve it into two pieces, so this #175a will be followed by #175b in the near future. With the hotly anticipated Djokovic-Nadal quarterfinal now complete, Ben and Courtney put down the panic buttons and hit the record button to share their feelings. What does the unshocking yet lopsided loss say about Rafael Nadal, and his future as a dominant force in tennis? What can he do to regain former glories? Also, just how much better is Novak Djokovic than everybody else? We also discuss other issues of the French Open second week, including debris falling on spectators, surprise semifinal runs by Ana Ivanovic, Lucie Safarova, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Stan Wawrinka, and more! We then dive into the issues about transcript availability to fans, and how this affects journalists like ourselves. In this special Rome final preview episode taped Saturday afternoon, Ben and Courtney look ahead to the upcoming tilt between Serena Williams and Sara Errani, as well as the week that was on the women's side at the Foro Italico. What do we make of Errani's unexpected emergence on home soil? Does she have a shot against Serena after the brutal loss in Paris last year? Also, our thoughts on the increasingly legit Ana Ivanovic, as well as the rest of the field that came and went through the Foro Italico. In Episode 65, Ben and Courtney return to the airwaves (internetwaves?) live from Melbourne once again, this time to sort through the rubble of another injury-laced exit from Melbourne by Serena Williams, this time at the unlikely hands of Ana Ivanovic. What does the win mean for Ana? And what does the loss mean for Serena? What do we make of the way Serena (and her coach Patrick Mouratoglou) handled her injury? And how does her exit change the landscape of the women's draw? Could Li Na actually be considered a viable favorite? The men haven't done much, but Bernard Tomic, who only played one set in Melbourne, is always one to get a conversation going. Thanks for waking up with us, dear listeners! Things got way too real at Wimbledon on Wednesday, so Ben and Courtney needed to rush to the microphone to come to grips with perhaps the craziest day of results and withdrawals in tennis history. After Rafael Nadal exited in the first round Monday, Wednesday saw the exits of Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Caroline Wozniacki, Marin Cilic, Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic, John Isner and Lleyton Hewitt, all on one day. It was weird, surreal, and we have lots of thoughts about what happened, and what will happen in the future, in this draw that now will guarantee some thoroughly unexpected players in the late rounds of this tournament. We make picks, but really who knows. Make your quarterfinal picks on our Facebook page, and we'll see who's wronger! We may have lost lots of players, but we're glad not to lose you, dear listeners! In this French Open Second Week special, Ben and Courtney catch up on all the happenings in the middle of the French Open, and look forward to the exciting last few matches of the tournament. We also find ourselves on the opposite sides of a few issues that arose. Should the tours do more to stop excessive grunting, after the chorus of shriek-denouncers again arose during the Sharapova-Azarenka semifinal, and are the complaints valid? Should a final set tiebreak be instituted to save the players from marathon fifth sets like the one between Haas and Isner? Then we largely agree on stuff some stuff as we talk about the status of the French Open in the Grand Slam landscape, as well as the culture of Twitter and betting. We also take a few questions, and explain why Ana Ivanovic is a terribly redesigned video game character, why Serena took so long to contend in Paris again, and what a fresh Slam winner could mean to the men's game. As always, thanks for liking us on Facebook, following us on Twitter, and leaving us reviews on iTunes! Nous voulons te voir, dear listeners.

Fox: Superfan, the best current ATPer not to win a Slam, and all this prize money mumbo-jumbo.

Episode 4 was struck down by the crippling stomach virus that is spreading around the Coachella Valley, so Ben and Courtney, who are both in Indian Wells for the BNP Paribas Open, reconvened to discuss what’s happened so far and what we look forward to during the business end of the tournament. We talk about Mardy Fish and Petra Kvitova’s early dismissals, the beautiful grounds at Indian Wells, and we hop on the Mona Barthel bandwagon. Tune in for our predictions just so you can hear Courtney say Ana Ivanovic had no shot against Caroline Wozniacki. When asked for a comment, Courtney said “Oops.”
