She recently announced that she will be running the TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon on October 20th, which serves as the Canadian Marathon Championships. In addition to the many meaningful reasons she chose this as her goal fall race, it's a full circle moment since this is where Natasha's marathoning career began back in 2013. And as you'll hear in the episode, she is a completely different athlete and person than she was 11 years ago. We touch on the CBC Documentary, Running a Revolution, where Natasha's attempts at making the 2024 Paris Olympic team were featured prominently . Even though her Olympic dream did not become a reality this time around, it gave her the opportunity to be a special analyst on the CBC broadcast team. This was a fun and unique episode where I gathered several listener questions. The TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon wants more women to run the marathon. Last year, they spent some time identifying challenges women face and having honest conversations with female runners about what can hold us back. This year, they launched the Women's Training Program: a free group for women planning to take on the full or half marathon on race day, October 20th. This group has been sharing their journey together online, in person on supported runs, and accessing resources, including a training program.  This training group is half way to their goal, so I caught up with a couple of them for a chat. Mandy Mundell is tackling training for the full for the third time after being sidelined in the past by injury and illness. Joan Broto, a mother of two teenagers, is working to prioritize her training time, and show her kids how amazing it can be to work towards a big goal. Kardia founder Heather Gardner joins us to bring her veteran perspective and provide some insight. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll definitely relate. Thanks to the participants and to TWM for letting me share this piece of the journey with everyone.  The TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon AND Half Marathon are officially sold out, but you can still catch the vibes by registering for the 5K on Saturday, October 19 www.torontowaterfrontmarathon.com  Follow TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon @torontowaterfront42k Follow Mandy @tri_ingfitnesslife Follow Heather @catchingheather @kardiaathletica   --- Theme by Joseph McDade

Race Report: Emily Durgin + 2024 USATF Olympic Trials Marathon

Adidas professional runner Emily Durgin shares how it all went down at the 2024 USATF Olympic Trials Marathon, which took place February 3, 2024, in Orlando, FL. On the line at this race, in addition to a national championship title, cash awards and series points, racers were vying for a spot on Team USA going to the 2024 Paris Olympics. This was the most anticipated US marathon of the last four years, and the competition was deeper and faster than ever. Marathon racing in the US is on fire, and this event was a terrific demonstration of just that. There were many racers lining up who had a legitimate shot at making the Olympic team, and Emily Durgin was one of them. The goal was simple: finish in the top 3 because those runners are automatic selections for the team; 4th place is the alternate. While Durgin is relatively new to the marathon, she's already had some stellar performances: in the one and only marathon she'd completed before the trials, the 2023 Toronto Waterfront Marathon, she'd clocked a 2:26, which ranked her 16th going into the trials (to note: she had lined up to debut at the 2022 NYC Marathon, but the day did not go her way and she did not finish). Durgin also has a blazing half-marathon PR of 1:07. And, she has a lot of experience with championship racing. Durgin's raced against the US's top competition and put herself on the podium several times. And coming into race day, she was ready: mentally, emotionally, and physically. In fact, an area where Durgin shines is in being able to arrive to the line with rock solid belief herself, which she goes into in this story. Because self-belief, unshakable confidence, it isn't something that just happens. It's the result of years of work. And of course, Durgin shares all the exciting details about the marathon itself, including her final moments before the finish line, which were not at all what she expected. Durgin is a consummate professional and it's cool to hear from an athlete who is so on her game. Just like last year, you can expect a Race Report episode for each race of the USATF Road Circuit series of races. Each episode features one top 10 runner telling the story of how the race went down, from her perspective. And because a race is never just about what happens on race day, you will get to know a little bit more about each one of the runners featured and how this race figures into their larger running story. The USATF Olympic Trials Marathon is a part of the USATF Running Circuit championship series of races. These are races that happen throughout the United States all year long and each race serves as a national championship for the distance or the type of race that is being run. Also, at each one of these races, in addition to vying for a national title, runners earn cash prizes and they earn points. The points go toward the series overall, which is determined at the end of the year. The next race on the circuit is the 15k National Championships taking place in Jacksonville, Florida, on March 2nd. A WRS Race Report will publish shortly thereafter. Be sure to subscribe to the podcast so you don't miss it! Growing up Dayna always loved to run but was interested in a variety of sports like soccer, figure skating, and gymnastics. After completing university she decided to invest more time into running and that move paid dividends. Now after more than 12 years, she's a 10 time national medalist, was named to the Canadian World Champion Team, and most recently competed in her first Olympics in Tokyo. In this episode of The XC Podcast, Alex Cyr talks with Rory Linkletter, a Canadian-American sponsored by Hoka One One, a member of the NAZ Elite squad, and running's equivalent to the Dos Equis' Most Interesting Man in the World. When Rory Linkletter ran 61:44 at the Houston Half Marathon in January, we all thought he was a shoe-in for making his first Canadian Olympic team. The, of course, COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic and the Games in Tokyo were postponed. Instead of packing it in for the year, the 24-year-old undertook several projects and challenges to outrun boredom. He started a podcast, he attempted to break Canada's one-hour run record, he bought a truck, he raced several virtual and in-person relays across the United States, he ran 2,000 feet up a mountain as hard as he could, he became a U.S. citizen, and now, he trains for his second-ever marathon. In this episode, Alex and Rory touch on several of these topics and more. Follow us on social @TheXCorg and visit our new content home: thexc.org

In recent weeks, there has been much more of a discussion in regards to having more female coaches in the sport. There are already many out there and deserve recognition for their tremendous work. I wanted to personally share the story of coach Kate Gustafson, who has been helping me with my own training but has been doing remarkable things with athletes of all levels for years. She is a coach with Mile2Marathon and helps with the Brooklyn Track Club in New York City. In addition to being a wonderful mentor and coach, she's a great runner as well. She owns a 2:40:10 marathon personal best. She competed in this year's elite field at the Boston Marathon and finished as the top Canadian woman and 34th overall. Most recently, she placed eighth in a hard-fought effort at the Canadian marathon trials held at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon. Since this summer, Kate has assisted me and my good friend Ryan Welsh in our marathon training. Ryan, who was featured on this podcast a few episodes ago, joins me to co-host this episode. Kate has got tons of awesome stories about growing up in a small town in Canada, playing Division 1 hockey in college, rediscovering an intense passion for running after college, heading to Kenya to run and train with some of the world’s best distance runners, and finding her calling as a fantastic coach for so many up and coming runners. She’s the ultimate champion for women’s sport and someone Ryan and I definitely trust and look up to. Neither were favourites for the win, and they each ran nearly 7 minute PB's to take the Canadian title and hit their Olympic qualifying marks. Both made big moves in the last 18 months, changing their training locations, coaches and lifestyles. And both came into this race as a last ditch attempt to prove to themselves and the nation that they belong on the world stage. Calgary's Trevor Hofbauer joins the CITIUS MAG Podcast just days after locking up his automatic berth for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo by finishing as the top Canadian man at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon. It marked the second Canadian marathon title in three years for Hofbauer as he upset Canadian record holder Cam Levins (3rd place, 2:15:01). Last year, Levins broke the Canadian record in Toronto in 2:09:25 and two years ago, Hofbauer celebrated into the finish line chute when he won in 2:18:05. This time around, he didn't celebrate until he made the final turn and saw the clock before the finish. He managed to lower his personal best from 2:16:48 in April's Hamburg Marathon to 2:09:51. After his race, he tweeted: "There’s a guy that lives in Calgary, trains solo except on LR Sunday’s with the guys, trains based off of feel, isn’t dictated by numbers, doesn’t care about likes and follows, and he’s a 2:09 guy. KEEP SHOWING UP" On Tuesday, he published a blog titled "Keep Showing Up" where he detailed the six-year journey to get to this point. We run through the blog post, which you can read here: https://trevorhofbauer.com/2019/10/22/keep-showing-up/ All of that and more in this episode of the show.

She grew up as a swimmer and competed through university until it just wasn’t fun anymore.  She retired from the sport she loved, until a few friends encouraged her to sign up for her first triathlon just 6 years ago. Since then she hasn’t looked back. We discussed Ottawa Race Weekend, her journey to becoming a triathlete, the stresses work can put on training. Growing up with professional athlete as a parent has taught Kelsey hard work. And with the Toronto Waterfront Marathon coming up this fall. She’ll use that mentality to try and get a Boston Qualifier. Can’t wait to see how she does! InnerVoice Audio Experience with Travis McKenzie

Robert MacDonald's life changed in an instant, during a trip to Mexico, he fell 31 feet from his hotel balcony, landed on his back and had two immediate thoughts. "What have I done", and "I can't feel my legs"... What followed was a journey of resilience and an attitude of "I will" that has motivated a community of incredible people to make a positive impact on the world around them. Following Robert's accident, with nine broken vertebrae, a dislocated spine, 11 broken ribs, a fractured scapula, a punctured lung, a lacerated kidney, and no sensation below his waist, doctors gave Robert MacDonald a 5% chance of ever walking again. Two years later, he completed a half marathon and three years later he completed his first full marathon. Team "I Will" started with one man, a tragedy and is now one of Toronto’s fastest growing charities. The Toronto Rahab Foundation helped give MacDonald a second chance and three years later, he set out to complete a marathon and give back. Soon a dynamic community had rallied around his mantra and hundreds would challenge themselves to do the same, joining MacDonald in crossing the finish line at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 2015. ---------------------- The InnerVoice Audio experience wouldn't be possible without the support of Ikor Labs, who have sponsored this episode. iKOR is a natural hemp source of CBD that protects your body from stress, improves athletic recovery and helps you maintain a positive mental state.
