The Epstein Chronicles
The Epstein Failure That Makes Dan Bongino's Tough Guy Act Ring Hollow

The Epstein Chronicles

Play Episode Listen Later May 14, 2026 12:38 Transcription Available

Dan Bongino's podcasting comeback is being sold like a heroic return, but it reads more like a retreat dressed up as defiance. For years, he built an audience by pounding the table about Epstein, corruption, and elite protection, casting himself as the guy who would never bend, never sell out, never shut up. Then he took a leadership role inside the very institution that sat on Epstein, protected him, slow-walked accountability, and still refuses full transparency. When that moment demanded courage, confrontation, and follow-through, Bongino delivered silence, excuses, and eventually an exit. No bombshells. No whistleblowing. No scorched-earth truth. Just a quiet pivot back to podcasting, followed by a shrug and an implicit “it's complicated.” The tough talk evaporated the second it required actual risk. What makes the whole act collapse is that Bongino now postures like nothing changed, as if the audience is supposed to forget the standard he set for everyone else. He didn't expose a cover-up. He didn't force disclosures. He didn't resign in protest while naming names. Instead, he came back and redirected his anger toward safer targets while avoiding the one issue that defined his credibility. The Epstein failure isn't a footnote, it's the test he failed in real time. You can't spend years branding yourself as the last honest man standing and then expect applause for returning to the mic empty-handed. The tough guy persona only works if it survives contact with power, and in the Epstein moment that mattered most, it folded completely.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

We finally delve into the iconic rock anthem "Here I Go Again" by Whitesnake, a song that has a far more interesting background than neither of us could have imagined. Despite Robert Plant's insistence that David Coverdale should be called David “Cover singer,” this huge hit is major part of rock n' roll and music video history – and yes, we will be talking about Tawny Kitaen, too. Like Bill's calculus class, this episode features a lot of tangents and as Holden Caulfield says, the digressions can be the most interesting parts. This recording was a lot of fun for us. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did! Videos links: Original Version 87 Version Thank you for listening! Host Jo Reed is joined by Kirkus fiction editor Laurie Muchnick for a deep dive into Rachel Reid's six-book Game Changers series. The basis for the HBO sensation Heated Rivalry, the books are a blend of pro hockey, queer romance, and unapologetic “spice.” The conversation zeroes in on two key audiobooks—Game Changer, read by Tor Thom, and The Long Game, read by Cooper North—highlighting how each narrator shapes character, tone, and emotional depth in very different ways. Along the way, Jo and Laurie consider what these romances promise (yes, a happily-ever-after), what they explore (from homophobia in sports to mental health), and how listening—especially to scenes of intimacy—changes the experience. A lively look at a very hot series—where performance shapes the story as much as the writing, and the chemistry comes through loud and clear.   Audiobooks Discussed: Game Changer by Rachel Reid, read by Tor Thom (Tantor Media) The Long Game by Rachel Reid, read by Cooper North (Harlequin Audio)   Other audiobooks in the Game Changers series by Rachel Reid:  Heated Rivalry and Tough Guy, read by Tor Thom (Tantor Media) Common Goal and Role Model, read by Cooper North (Harlequin Audio) Learn more about your ad choices. The Price of Playing the Tough Guy, with Jacob Butchoff

Mid-life Men: the mental health podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 2, 2026 73:09

This is a difficult and honest conversation. For years, Jacob played the tough guy. Violence, intimidation, and control became a shield against something he could not face in himself. The price was prison, addiction, fractured relationships and a life built on concealing his true identity. Adopted as a baby and raised in a loving, privileged home in North London, Jacob grew up with a persistent sense of not belonging. Alongside that was the realisation, from a young age, that he was gay. Instead of acknowledging it, he suppressed it.What followed was not confusion, it was deliberate rejection of himself. He constructed a persona built on aggression and intimidation. Violence became a way to avoid scrutiny. Crime became a way to reinforce the mask. That path led to prison, addiction, secrecy, and years of internal conflict. This episode does not romanticise any of it.Jacob speaks plainly about:Growing up adopted and carrying an unspoken sense of differenceThe exhaustion of maintaining two identitiesUsing violence as protectionThe psychological reality of prisonAddiction and isolation after releaseSearching for identity in the wrong placesCaring for his father with dementia and confronting what truly mattersComing to terms with his sexuality later in lifeThere are no easy lessons in this story. It is uncomfortable at times. But it is real. Why listen?Because while few men will follow Jacob's exact path, many will recognise parts of it, the mask, the suppression, the anger, the attempt to prove strength instead of admitting fear. This episode is about the cost of self-rejection. It is about responsibility. It is about identity. And it is about the slow work of rebuilding a life once you decide to stop running.Jacob does not present himself as a victim. He accepts the consequences of his actions. What he offers instead is perspective: strength is willingness to live honestly, even after years of doing the opposite. This conversation will not be for everyone. But for those who are carrying something unspoken, it may resonate more than they expect.

The tough guy persona only works if it survives contact with power, and in the Epstein moment that mattered most, it folded completely.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

Twice winner of the Pulitzer Prize, firstly in 1969 for The Armies of the Night and again in 1980 for The Executioner's Song, Norman Mailer's life comes as close as is possible to being the Great American Novel: beyond reason, inexplicable, wonderfully grotesque and addictive. The Naked and the Dead was acclaimed not so much for its intrinsic qualities but rather because it launched a brutally realistic sub-genre of military fiction - Catch 22 and MASH would not exist without it.  In Tough Guy: The Life of Norman Mailer (Bloomsbury, 2023), Richard Bradford combs through Mailer's personal letters - to lovers and editors - which appear to be a rehearsal for his career as a shifty literary narcissist, and which shape the characters of one of the most widely celebrated World War II novels. Bradford strikes again with a merciless biography in which diary entries, journal extracts and newspaper columns set the tone of this study of a controversial figure. From friendships with contemporaries such as James Baldwin, failed correspondences with Hemingway and the Kennedys, to terrible - but justified - criticism of his work by William Faulkner and Eleanor Roosevelt, this book gives a unique, snappy and convincing perspective of Mailer's ferocious personality and writings. Daniel Moran earned his B.A. and M.A. in English from Rutgers University and his Ph.D. in History from Drew University.
