Teachers are key agents of changes and improvements in their classrooms. Yet spaces and opportunities for teachers, and others in the human services, to have control over their working lives and professional learning, have drastically diminished. Janette and Mary talk to Marie about their project to address this, by supporting teachers' reflection and self-directed learning and improvement. The evaluation of their project was overwhelmingly positive, with principals and teachers valuing the opportunity for professionaly supportive reflection, especially in a safe space outside the school environment.ReferencesAllen, J.M. With Summer behind us and the touch of Autumn on the horizon, it's time to say a fond and lengthy farewell to the 2024 garden season. But that's not to say there is still a tremendous amount of gardening to be done. Lucy will be revelling in her Fruit and Veg as Autumn is the crescendo of harvest time, and Saul will be willing an Indian Summer so his last few exotics can flower before tucking them away for some well deserved winter rest. Otherwise there are still lawns to cut, leaves to be racked and a lot of planning for 2025!Lucy and Saul have had a very busy couple weeks, mostly away from home, while visiting gardens, attending trails of Tomatoes, PSB and spuds, and meeting up with fellow RHS committees for various study trips and meetings. That means the pair haven't really got on with much gardening - but they have still be indulging in the world of horticulture and seeing it's breadth and diversity throughout the UK! A Christchurch school is trialling letting students work from home two days a week, to address falling attendance rates. Hagley College hopes to target students who struggle with attendance due to mental health concerns or sickness. The hybrid learning model will be offered to 20 NCEA Level 2 students. Students will attend 16 hours of in-person maths, science and English classes a week, and the rest via scheduled video calls. New Zealand Education Specialist Derek Wenmoth helped Hagley College to design the trial. Wenmoth tells Heather du Plessis-Allan other countries have programmes specifically targeting students struggling with issues like anxiety, and that New Zealand is behind on the uptake. Let's be honest: your to-do list is stressing you out. While its purpose is to get your life organised and keep you on track, it's far too easy to get overwhelmed by everything on it. The good thing to remember is that while your to-do list will most likely always have something on it, the goal isn't necessarily to get it empty. There are ways to manage your tasks in a way that doesn't overwhelm you. So, let's look at some techniques to help clear the brain clutter and maximise your productivity. I've got a couple of methods that you can use to get yourself refocused and back on track. They'll also help you allow yourself to rest, reset and redirect your energy to the right places and spaces.I take you through the practical steps of creating a priority list, which will help you get things in the right order and ready to action. We'll also talk about my current favourite: the five-minute list. This is a great way to break down which tasks can be completed in five minutes, so you can start crossing things off on the daily in a manageable way. The best thing you can do for yourself is learn lots of different methods for productivity and work out which suits you best. The solution might even be a hybrid of a few.My advice? Just get started. Trialling different options will help you explore and enhance your individual productivity style - and no doubt help create the balanced and fulfilling life you're looking for. In this week's episode, Land Rover Monthly's Martin and Steve answer a listener's question regarding which era of Defender to choose for his first Land Rover. Martin shares a tale of his driving instructor's wary approach to Land Rovers, and Steve remembers what got him into the Green Oval in the first place – an old logging truck called AlCraig. The pair look at how trends in the Land Rover scene have come and gone over the years, and wonder if it's time to return the mighty RTI twist-off ramp to Land Rover shows. There's also an introduction into the wonderful world of trialling, and why trails competitions should be growing in size rather than declining. There's also the ever-popular Feature of the Week and Product of the Week to give you a taste of what's in this month's Land Rover Monthly magazine, and as always, if you have questions, feel free to send them to editorial@lrm.co.uk – enjoy!

Hopes are rising for the commercialisation of batteries that are boosted by the inclusion of platinum and palladium following the engagement of an innovation centre to drive the next generation of battery chemistries to market. Collaboration between the Florida International University-linked Lion Battery Technologies of the US and the Battery Innovation Center of Newberry, Indiana, will include creating prototypes for commercialisation consideration next year. Lion's target is to develop batteries with specific energies that are 20% to 100% higher than current technologies while matching or beating present cycle lives. Established four years ago by the Toronto- and New York-listed Platinum Group Metals and the Johannesburg-listed Anglo American Platinum, Lion has been developing the next-generation battery technology using platinum and palladium since 2019. Anglo Platinum has the Mogalakwena, Amandelbult and Mototolo platinum group metals (PGM) operations in South Africa's Bushveld Complex, and the North American Platinum Group Metals, headed by CEO Frank Hallam, is the discoverer and operator of a bulk underground PGM deposit in South Africa's Waterberg, which is being developed with joint venture partners Impala Platinum, Mnombo Wethu Consultants, Japan Organisation for Metals and Energy Security, and Hanwa. Successful commercialisation would mean that the extension of PGMs beyond use in the exhaust systems of internal combustion engines and ensuring the zero-emission advantage of fuel cell electric vehicles, to also making an energy-enhancing and weight-reducing entry into battery electric vehicles. Since inception, the Lion team has focused on the development of proprietary lithium sulphur technology and enhancing the performance of existing commercial lithium-ion or NMC chemistries. Lion has a sponsored research agreement with Florida International University, including exclusive rights to intellectual property developed and will lead the commercialisation efforts. On top of that, the Battery Innovation Center will now collaborate with commercial enterprises, universities, government agencies, and industry leaders to focus on the rapid development, testing, and commercialisation of safe, reliable, and lightweight energy storage systems for commercial and defence customers. The mission of the Battery Innovation Center is to accelerate innovation in the field of battery technology by providing access to the entire spectrum of research and development to commercialisation, including low volume production, in a single 40 000 square foot facility. Under an agreed scope of work, the Battery Innovation Center – which works with clients including BrightVolt, Rolls Royce, DuPont, Valvoline, GE Global Research, and Cummins – is to conduct independent small-scale and large-scale trials to validate Lion's PGMs-based based electrode composition, slurry, and films in lithium-sulphur and lithium-ion coin and pouch cells. Research at Lion is led by Dr Bilal El-Zahab and Dr Wan Si Tang is the advanced battery manufacturing team leader at the Battery Innovation Center. “We're excited to collaborate and support the endeavour for next generation lithium-related battery chemistries toward higher technology readiness levels," Tang stated in a release to Mining Weekly.
ARIA Research is a Sydney-based start-up developing technologies delivering a sense of vision via sound (echolocation) to people who are blind or have low vision. The company's defining advantage has been its diverse and inclusive team, which incorporates employees and end users living with blindness into every aspect of the project and organisation. Their breakthrough bionic vision system was funded initially through MTPConnect's BioMedTech Horizons program (see podcast episode 124) and now with support from the Clinical Translation and Commercialisation Medtech program, the company is gearing up for a clinical trial.ARIA Research's Co-Founder and CEO, Robert Yearsley, Program Director Dr Neesam Jeffers, and Research Coordinator Dr Lil Deverell join the podcast to talk about co-design practices, clinical trial planning, building a new Human Augmentation Laboratory (HAL) which will open soon in Sydney, and offer tips for medtech startups about commercialisation and the benefits of MRFF funding.
