We welcome the iconic Howie Rubin to the show! Howie moved to San Francisco in 1975 in search of a good time at age 21, and ended up helping open up America's first wineries bar, the London Wine Bar. They served wines by the glass and had winemaker dinners back then, and he was bitten by the wine bug. He traveled to wine regions all over California and carved himself quite a niche at the wine bar, where wine was really coming into its own. 2 years later he worked a crush at Mayacamas Vineyards on top of Mt. Veeder, and he got a real education and appreciation for how much work goes into producing a bottle of wine.Phase 2 of his career took place at the Breakers Hotel in Florida, where he lived for a year. He was one of 4 sommeliers on the floor and really tuned up his education on how to serve, how to sell, and how to learn about European wines. He tried to get the Hotel to take on some California wines, but they were resistant! Howie then moved to Marblehead in 1980 and began what turned out to be a 43-year run on Valentine's Day 1980. He worked for 4 different owners over those years, and each one let him run the business his way, which is customer service comes before anything else. During the 90s he had a 2-minute radio program on wine, airing twenty times a week, talking about the trends and highlights of the wine business in Boston. He also hosted dinners with Daniel Bruce for the Boston wine festival and did that for many years. When he was presented with the opportunity to open up Vin Fromage, he was ready for a change. The local community has embraced them, and the wine program has thrived and grown under his watch. The philosophy that worked at Bauers is the same there... always put your customers' needs first!Learn more at:https://vinaufromage.com/https://www.instagram.com/vinfromage/See more on the free Urban Wine Club app.
Aaron Pott is a true legend in wine country. Starting his career at newton Vineyards in Napa, he left the U.S. for a position as winemaker at Château Troplong-Mondot, a Premier Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Émilion, France. Aaron then moved to Château Troplong- Mondont after a year to become director at Château La Tour Figeac, a Grand Cru Classé located in Saint-Emilion. He spent five years there and, in the process, earned a degree in Viticulture from the Université de Bourgogne in Dijon, France. Aaron eventually returned to Napa and accepted the position of head winemaker in charge of international brands for Beringer before taking over as general manager and winemaker at Quintessa in 2004. After buying a piece of property on Mt. Veeder, Aaron and his wife Claire started Pott Wines, making Zinfandel, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Grenache. He continues to consult for numerous wineries, when he's not surfing or watching soccer. All the wines are stellar, but that Zinfandel and Cabernet Franc are still on my mind. Welcome to episode 1108, in which host Polly Hammond interviews Mayacamas Olds, this week on Uncorked. This week, we welcome Mayacamas Olds. Born and raised amidst the vines, Mayacamas has spent her entire life in the wine world. Over 10 years ago, before sustainability was an everyday buzzword, Mayacamas earned her Masters in Corporate Sustainability, and has made it her mission to build regenerative models across all facets of wine, not just in the vineyards. In this no-holds-barred interview we discuss everything from the need to vote and prioritizing mental health, to the great resignation to caring for our ag workers. Let's get into it. More about today's guest: Mayacamas Olds was born and raised on Mt. Veeder in Napa Valley. Growing up on her family's small estate winery and vineyard operation, her love of the wine industry and sustainability was engrained from a young age. In 2000, she embarked on a lifelong career in the wine industry – first at Penfolds in South Australia as a Winemaking Liason for three years. Mayacamas then of Sky Vineyards, her family's winery, for nine years, where she touched on every part of operations, from sales to marketing to the vineyards. Seeking a new challenge she became General Manager of Sonoma Community Gardens in 2003, developing their educational programs to promote organic and sustainable ethnobotany. Since then, she has gone on to oversee 700 acres of certified organic and biodynamic vineyards at Enterprise Vineyards; oversee independent farmers and promote fiscal sustainability at Sunshine Organic Consulting; and manage sustainability, technical, and fiscal farming for 5,200 acres of California vineyards as the Director of Vineyard Operations & Grower Relations at Diageo Chateau & Estates. In 2020, Mayacamas was appointed General Manager of Gloria Ferrer, where she built successful innovative top-line strategy across operations, hospitality, DTC, marketing, winemaking, viticulture, and sustainability. Nowadays, as COO of Enterprise Vineyards and Winery Sixteen 600, she's ensuring that philosophy and sustainability goals are achieved for operations, marketing, PR, HR, and IT. To learn more visit: Twitter: https://twitter.com/Mayacamas LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mayacamasolds/ More about the host: Polly is Founder and CEO of 5forests. She splits her time between Barcelona, Auckland, and Napa, consulting, writing, and speaking about the trends that impact today's wine businesses. She's an advisor to New Zealand Trade & Enterprise, host of Uncorked with the Italian Wine Podcast, cohost of the Real Business of Wine with Robert Joseph, and, occasionally, a knitter. Polly is a graduate of the University of Southern California, where she earned degrees in International Relations and French. Those studies led to a deep and abiding love affair with behavioral Economics, and her wine work is based on insights into all the crazy and irrational reasons consumers engage with brands. Alexandra O'Gorman, Tom Simoneau & Niki Williams. Chateau St. Jean winemaker Niki Williams and Alexandra O'Gorman from Foley Family Wines join Steve Jaxon, Harry Duke and Tom Simoneau on California Wine Country today. Dan Berger is away this week. Alexandra O'Gorman's title is Senior Director of Luxury Sonoma Estates at Foley Family Wines. Niki Williams is the winemaker at Chateau St. Jean winery. Alexandra tells how the company has invested in many family wineries and they have also acquired Chateau St. Jean. They have done renovations to the winery and they have brought winemaking back to Chateau St. Jean. Tom Simoneau tells the story of how a previous owner stopped winemaking on site. Wine has not been made there since 2016, so all the equipment is being renovated and replaced. The estate vineyards are also being refreshed. While they are tasting a Pinot Blanc, Niki Williams tells her winemaking history. With a bachelors degree in English she graduated without “a clue.” She stated doing acting and improv and worked with a travel company where she got an exposure to wine while traveling to Europe. She decided to become a winemaker and studied at UC Davis. She worked at the Starmont winery and for some Constellation wineries, Franciscan, Mt. Veeder and The Prisoner Wine Company. Alexandra O'Gorman describes her job for Foley Family Wines where she oversees several wineries that they have purchased. They focus on a guest experience with fine wine, beautiful locations and new culinary choices. Their first vintage was 1974. Chateau St. Jean is promoting their Summer Fête, a French-themed soirée, on July 9. Tasting Chateau St. Jean Wines They are tasting the Alexander Valley Pinot Blanc. Most of the fruit is from Robert Young vineyards. 40% fermented in barrels and 60% in steel tanks, so it is balanced between the barrel & lees contact flavors and the steely flavors. It has creamy pear flavors from the oak but is very well balanced. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. The Belle Terre Chardonnay is a single-vineyard wine and one of the first. They try to capture the unique terroir of the vineyard. This vineyard is in Alexander Valley in the southern part, close to the Russian River. This is 100% barrel fermented for the creamy mid-pallette texture. It does not get full ML so you also get the fresh acidity. Tom Simoneau compares it to his own Brenda Lee Chardonnay, made similarly. It is less creamy than the Pinot Blanc. The acidity brings out the lovely minerality on the finish, which comes from the soils. The vines have been around since at least the early 70s. Lastly they taste a Pinot Noir, which Niki calls her favorite grape. This is the 2017 Benoit Ranch Pinot Noir. This vineyard is in the northwest corner of Carneros in Sonoma. Tom Simoneau likes the finish, it has a “soft grip.”

Veeder set him on a life-changing path that he never would had imagined. He eventually traded in his suit for a shovel, planting a vineyard by hand one Saturday at a time for eight years. His goal was to produce wines worthy of a world stage. With 100 years of agriculture in Napa, it comes as no surprise that the heart and soul of Gamble Family Vineyards is deeply rooted in the soil. Founded by third-generation farmer Tom Gamble in 2005, Gamble Family Vineyards owns prime estate vineyards from many of Napa's most respected AVAs—Oakville, Mt. Veeder, Rutherford and Yountville. Its winery and by-invitation-only tasting room have a quiet presence, sitting modestly in an isolated nook off Highway 29 in the heart of Napa Valley's Oakville AVA. Set back from the main road, Gamble's mission here is to carry on the heritage of farming that his ancestors sowed when they came to Napa as farmers and cattle ranchers in 1916. They left with him a legacy of deep and abiding affinity for the land from which came not only their livelihood, but also a life full of purpose.Having shadowed his father on the family ranches as a child, Tom has had a hand in the land since an early age. In 1981, at the age of 20, he purchased his first vineyard with several partners, making him the first Gamble to begin growing grapes commercially. “Given this legacy, one does not continue farming for dispassionate reasons alone—there are easier ways to make a living. And thus, taking the next step and putting my name on a bottle of wine does not come lightly,” says Gamble.Winemaker Jim Close follows Gamble Family Vineyards' mission of producing Old World style wines that seamlessly bring together elegance, balance, nuance, with good structure and moderate alcohol, while embracing and highlighting the characteristics Napa Valley terroir imparts on the wines. Jim Close began his winemaking career in the southern Languedoc region of France, and has made every bottle of Gamble Family Vineyards wine since inception.

After 17 years of doing literally everything in the wine industry from farming coastal vineyards and washing barrels to running national sales and curating wine lists, Matt & Audra have ventured on to a delicious new journey called Newfound. Find the full show notes here. Having a proclivity for the tactile and tangible work of farming a vineyard, the couple purchased property in the Sierra Foothills of El Dorado County near the town of Placerville to plant their 40-acre ranch to vines. Matt fell in love with farming after Ehren Jordan, of Failla Wines, presented him with the opportunity to take over the farming of his Cazadero vineyard on the extreme Sonoma Coast. Ever since, Matt has been yearning to get back to that sort of lifestyle on his own terms. Matt’s winemaking approach is minimalistic. He’s moved by wines that contain a naturally rugged edge and is in a constant pursuit of pushing his winemaking limits. As it relates to his own wines, he’s firmly guided by the belief that less is always more. With a focus on “fringe” varietals such as Semillon from Yountville, Carignan from Redwood Valley, and Counoise, Grenache, and Mourvedre from Mt. Veeder, the Naumanns are in pursuit of a dream to become first generation grape growers and wine producers in California. In Episode 43 of the Mr. Wine Guy Podcast I had the opportunity to sit down with Whitney Yates, Winemaker for Yates Family Vineyard out of the Mt. Veeder AVA of Napa Valley. In this episode Whitney and I talk about her family's legacy through the years which dates back to 1950 making Yates Family Vineyard the oldest owned vineyard in Mt. Veeder for nearly 70 years now. With that being said, Whitney talks about the history of the property, what it's like to be a "ghost winery," and her family's appreciation of place, being stewards of a land that's been handed down for decades. Whitney talks about her father Mike Yates, his story in the wine industry, and what it's like to make wines along side him for a little over 15 years now. Whitney also talks about what it's like to be a 2nd Generation Winemaker, a founding member of Vit Women, and also a member of Next Generation of Wine. This epsiode is packed with so much history and a special sense of place that only Mt. Veeder can provide. With that being, this is an epsiode eximplifying a family who's hard work and charisma have been the single most important part to why they're as successful as they are today. This is one of the things I know will resonate with you more than anything is how through hard work and committment, whatever YOU want to achieve in life can be done when you have the love and support of those that mean the most to you to back it up. So sit back, relax, and get ready, because you are going to love this episode. Cheers

If you enjoy a glass of wine while reading a good mystery you'll appreciate this story. Zinfandel has been in the U.S. since the early 1800s yet no one knew for sure where it originated. Is it related to Primitivo? Finally in 2001, with help from others around the globe, U.C. Davis professor Carole Meredith solved the mystery and in turn helped save the heritage grape from extinction. Carole shares her exhaustive research and discovery with me in this in-depth interview. You'll also hear about her own vineyard, Lagier Meredith, which sits high atop Mt. Veeder overlooking Napa Valley. Pour yourself a glass, it's a good story. Find more stories at OnTheWineRoad.com.
Robert is back to talk about how he utilized his time in prison (8 1/2 years) following a fatal DWI accident in which 6 people were killed. Hear how he became a Zen practitioner, ran a marathon behind prison walls, got married and how this set the foundation for him living the sober life and becoming as substance abuse counselor.
Not long after college, and with a degree in French Language, Michaela Rodeno talked her way into getting hired as the second employee at Moët & Chandon's new American winery, Domaine Chandon. It was 1973 and the office was in a garage on Mt. Veeder. After 15 years of helping Chandon become a success, she left as a V.P. and accepted the C.E.O. position at the newly established St. Supery Vineyards and Winery. While there she formed Women for WineSense with Frog's Leap Winery's Julie Johnson, to combat the rising anti-alchohol movement of the 1990s. Michaela is now retired from the industry and focuses on the family's Villa Ragazzi Wines, while Women for WineSense has continued to grow across the country. When you hear this interview you'll understand why she is a beloved member, if not an icon, of the Napa wine industry.
