Send us a Text Message. What happens when you combine "Mad Max" with roller-skating orphans and a dash of Mel Brooks' production magic? You get the 1986 cult classic "Solar Babies," a movie so bizarre it had us questioning everything from the logic of "skateball" to the mystifyingly named characters. We kick off this roller-coaster critique with some laughs about a painful hike and sunburns, setting the stage for our deep dive into the chaotic creation and puzzling narrative of this curious film. It's a blend of missed opportunities and hilarious missteps, all set in a world where misfit kids try to escape their captors through the power of... roller skates? In our detailed breakdown, we examine the lack of character development, the strange setting of an orphanage filled with amnesiac kids, and Jason Patrick's inexplicable awkwardness in a rain scene. We even explore the potential of "skateball" as a sport and the baffling setting of Tire Town. From the bridge crossing and Chikani camp attack to the magical elements and characters like "Darstar," we leave no stone unturned as we humorously critique these scenes. Mel Brooks' involvement and the film's many chaotic elements spark a lively discussion on what could have been if only the movie had a coherent vision. Finally, we take on the film's confusing themes and unresolved questions. Why does Jason Patrick struggle to experience joy? What's the deal with Charles Durning's role as the warden? And how did a movie with such a promising concept end up so scattered and nonsensical? We also share thoughts on other sci-fi movies and our plans to revisit the classic "Rollerball." Join us for a fun, entertaining, and sometimes baffling critique of "Solar Babies," a film that's as unique as it is perplexing.Written lovingly with AIBe our friend!Dan: @shakybaconTony: @tonydczechAnd follow the podcast on IG: @hatewatchingDAT
Send us a Text Message. What happens when a guy who used to make crates for an art handling company in 1997 starts a podcast? You get hilarious stories, like Dan reminiscing about his crate-making days with staple guns and glue, and Tony suggesting he should shift to making custom jigsaw puzzles. And wait till you hear the mix-up involving Tony's aunt's name! Before we know it, we're back in Hollywood, with Tony unveiling the movie of the week, setting the stage for a wild ride through disaster movie land. Our critique session kicks off with a bang as we compare the classic disaster flicks "Towering Inferno" and "The Poseidon Adventure" with modern hits like "Deep Impact" and "Twister." Then, we dive headfirst into the chaotic waters of "Speed 2: Cruise Control." We dissect its lack of tension, shoddy writing, and bizarre action sequences, all while sprinkling in intriguing tidbits about Jason Patrick's high school days and his enigmatic persona. Get ready for our final verdict on why "Speed 2" sunk harder than the Titanic, from its illogical plot points to its almost comically bad scenes. But hold onto your life vests, because it gets even crazier. We chew through the baffling nonsense of "Speed 2," from a boat rescue gone wrong to a deaf girl improbably escaping an elevator. We'll have you laughing as we recount the chainsaw-wielding heroics and near-death propeller escapades. And just when you think it couldn't get any more outlandish, we wrap up with some YouTube channel highlights and a disappointing Olympic event. Don't miss our take on "Solar Babies" next week—it's going to be a roller-skating sci-fi riot!Written lovingly with AIBe our friend!Dan: @shakybaconTony: @tonydczechAnd follow the podcast on IG: @hatewatchingDAT

Through Zoetrope's experimental, communal utopia, Coppola attempted to reimagine the entire pursuit of moviemaking. Now, more than fifty years later, despite myriad setbacks, the visionary filmmaker's dream persists, most notably in the production of his decades-in-the-making film and the culmination of his utopian ideals, Megalopolis. As Wasson makes clear, the story of Zoetrope is also the story of Coppola's wife, Eleanor Coppola, and their children, and of personal lives inseparable from artistic passion. It is a story that charts the divergent paths of Coppola and his cofounder and onetime apprentice, George Lucas, and of their very different visions of art and commerce. And it is a story inextricably bound up in the making of one of the greatest quixotic masterpieces ever attempted, Apocalypse Now, and in what Coppola found in the jungles of the Philippines when he walked the razor's edge. That story, already the stuff of legend, has never fully been told, until this extraordinary book.Available herePodcast Rewind:June 2024 - Ep. 34…The Making Of is published by Michael Valinsky. To promote your products or services to over 25,000 filmmakers, TV and video pros reading this newsletter, please email us at mvalinsky@me.com Get full access to The Making Of at themakingof.substack.com/subscribe

Nicole ArlynTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know actress, author, producer Nicole Arlyn. In this episode, we chat about her growing up in a small community where there may have been some artistic elements to the local water source! Then we discuss what made her choose Ohio State University, and compete in The Miss Ohio beauty pageant, before leaving it all behind to follow her dreams as an actress in Paris, France. She tells us what brought her back to New York to study at The Neighborhood Playhouse, and what famous magician finally talked her into going to Los Angeles to make a name for herself in Hollywood. Along the way, Nicole shares stories of some of her acting projects like: Pot Luck, Clay Pigeons, and Til Death Do Us Part. Of course, I ask her what it was like to work with such greats as: Joaquin Phoenix, Michale Imperioli, and Jason Patrick. Finally, we get into why she decided to write 26 fantasy novels, including The Sugarspear Chronicles.... which she is turning into films with her 8 year old son and their Bird I The Wild production company. This is a lot of fun, and a wild ride, to be sure. Back in May, the government injected another $300m into NZ Green Investment Finance – or NZGIF – taking the green bank's investment pool to $700m. Starting in 2019 the bank has committed about $300m in 16 transactions to-date. Given the scale of the transition, why is it such a small sum and why is it taking so long to spend it? What impact is it having on emissions reductions? And will the bank survive a potential change of government? To answer this and more Vincent was joined by chief officer manager Jason Patrick.

Our featured interview tonight is with pipe maker Jason Patrick. Jason is from the Chicago area, and he started making pipes in 2019. Some of his earliest memories are of his grandfather smoking a pipe. He started pipe smoking in his early 20's, and soon decided that he wanted to make them. He started with standard shapes, and then branched out into Danish-style freehand designs. He likes to listen to our show while kayaking. In Pipe Parts, we will have an Ask the Tobacco Blender segment with Jeremy Reeves. Jeremy is the Head Blender at Cornell & Diehl, which is one of the most popular boutique pipe tobacco companies in the USA.
Our Score - 7.58/10 (B) Rotten Tomatoes - 83% IMDB - 7.1/10 Chosen By: Shane Cronican On the surface, Narc (2002) may seem like a stock police thriller. However, thanks to powerhouse performances from Ray Liotta and Jason Patrick, and an injection of style and energy from director Joe Carnahan, this manages to rise above its counterparts.
Jason is the pastor of the Streamwood Vineyard Church and the regional youth leader for what has been known as the Midwest North. In this episode we go into a deep discussion about our motives for ministry, how what we “get” out of ministry can become unhealthy, and how to have honest conversations about the pitfalls of youth ministry. We also discuss how to define “success” in youth ministry, why counting heads can be dangerous, and what the point of youth ministry really should be.

De gast deze week – misschien heb je van hem gehoord? – is Martin Koolhoven. Bovendien zit er zijn favoriete versie in van Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me, gezongen door de grote Roger Daltrey. We're joined by writer Leila Latif to discuss two nineties takes on the female alien. First, we discuss Species (1995) and its insanely misused cast, mix of genres and non-consensual alien sex. The second part of the episode (from 0:23:15) dives into The Faculty (1998), how this teen sci-fi has aged, the teenage dynamics, the very Josh Hartnett brand of 'hardboi' and why the alien may have had a point. *** The Final Girls are a UK-based film collective exploring the intersections of horror film and feminism. Hey everybody! It’s the 200th episode of Spoilerpiece Theatre! You may have noticed some different music at the opening to commemorate it. We also recorded on Kris’s birthday, so the opening muzak is doubly significant! We kick things off with an episode of KEEPING UP WITH THE JENSONS covering THE LOST BOYS (3:20). Following a spirited discussion of whether garlic works on these vampires a brief recap of Jason Patrick movies, the guys move on to BREAKING IN (13:00), a.k.a. GABRIELLE UNION KILLS SOME DUDES WHO THREATEN HER CHILDREN, which only Dave saw. (Note: This movie is super violent, and notice how Dave gets all the violent movies?) Next is Evan with LU OVER THE WALL (25:37), a weird mermaid tale that he struggled to watch (and Kris takes a detour to Tangent Street so he can talk about THE LURE, another mermaid movie). Finally, all three hosts saw the Melissa McCarthy vehicle LIFE OF THE PARTY (36:15).
The art world is a complex animal. One of the many arms of the beast, includes the galleries in which artwork is seen, run by a unique blend of personalities who must balance business with creating an inspirational vision that, hopefully, serves both the artists and the artwork. Jason Voegele, artist and curator, has consistently been a passionate advocate for artists, art making and the artistic process. From his early days growing up in South East Asia to his role as founding member of Republic Worldwide and his current role as a part of a curatorial team that runs the Lodge Gallery* on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Voegele explains his philosophical and curatorial ethos as well as his own personal worldview. Voegele regaled us with tales of his auspicious birth, his time as a gymnast and musician as well as his own artistic endeavors. A sort of Renaissance man of the art world, Voegele is a delightful storyteller who left us hungry for more. To be continued! - Music: Low Tide by Silent Partner * Following our conversation, the Lodge Gallery announced it's closing, but where one door closes another one opens and we are excited to hear more from Jason soon about his future projects and manifestations as a curatorial entrepreneur extraordinaire.Support the show (https://paypal.me/TMARTNY?locale.x=en_US)

Today we talk with musician and actor Timmy Cappello. Timmy is the original "Epic Sax Man" and he made a splash on the big screen in 1987 in the film The Lost Boys, which starred Corey Haim, Corey Feldman and Jason Patrick. The film would go on to earn over $32 million dollars and become an absolute classic. Timmy's big scene happens about 10 minutes into the film, when he's shown performing at an outdoor concert on the Santa Clara boardwalk. He's shirtless, buff, heavily oiled, wearing a chain choker, sporting a long ponytail and purple leather pants. He's belting out the lyrics and playing saxophone to a catchy song called "I Still Believe". I caught up with Timmy to find out about some of the rather incredible things he's gotten to do over the years...from appearing on some of the biggest albums of all time to touring the world with Tina Turner, Peter Gabriel, Carly Simon and Ringo Starr. Aaron has an emotional plea this week in order to win back the love of a friend. The lead singer of Cabin Fever's favourite band, The Tastydactyls, needs to be told just how much we love him. In a heterosexual way (mostly). Of course, we have the usual talk of Koala bears, complicated chainsaw suicide, and Jason Patrick. But mostly it's about man-love. As always, there is music thrown in to break up the sexual tension.
