The wonderful, erudite and incisive Victoria Scott - that's right, my @wtyppod nemesis - is joining us this week for what will I already know will be one of our all-time greats. Why are driverless cars still being pushed onto an unwilling public, three-quarters of a century after the first trials? What's the real reason for adding a near-literal tonne of sensors and high technology to the simple automobile? Why will driverless cars never functionally exist? All questions Victoria is the perfect guest to answer for us. I'm excited! Head to Victoria's website here: https://www.vantimevictoria.com/ Enjoyed this? In 2024, we’ve talked to and learned from some of the region’s boundary pushing authors. One of them is local automotive journalist Victoria Scott. Victoria loves cars – as models of freedom, style, and engineering. She also thinks car culture doesn’t have to be so male-dominated. Those two things drove her to write about and photograph trans women, nonbinary people, and their relationship to cars. Her book is We Deserve This. Elon Musk's gigantic, stainless steel, 1980s sci fi movie–inspired Cybertruck is starting to show up on city streets. Perhaps you've had the misfortune of seeing one rolling through your neighborhood. If not, you've almost certainly seen some of the vehicle's many truly epic fails on the Internet. The Cybertruck might not work very well, but it still appears to be wildly popular. More than two million people have deposited $250 to get in line for the opportunity to buy one. Journalist Ed Niedermeyer is the author of “Ludicrous: The Unvarnished Story of Tesla Motors.” In this episode, Ed joins us to analyze the Cybertruck as a cultural text and also just to revel in its overwhelming absurdity. What is the Cybertruck? And what does its apparent popularity say about who we are and where we are headed collectively? This is the Cybertruck launch event we've all been waiting for. Reno's Victoria Scott, a scientist-turned-writer, is capturing some of Reno's skyline and signage in her photography. After a career as a software engineer working at NASA, Scott came out as a transgender woman during the pandemic. Scott found going back in person to the Houston office and explaining this unappealing. With a few years moonlighting as an automotive writer in her free time under her belt, Scott decided to try that route full-time. The remote nature of the new job meant that Scott could work anywhere in the country. A subsequent road trip across the nation, admiration for the desert and a friend renting out space left Scott with the impression that Reno was the place for her to move to. Listen to some of her journey which includes discovering Reno through her lens with reporter Jesse Stone.
