I used to live on my boat. It was a sloop and had excellent turning capabilities. Generally, the rudder of a ship should be 1/70th of the size of the hull. And, there is a formula used by naval architects to calculate the area of a ship's rudder: AR = K x LBP x d (m2). WORDS DETERMINE DIRECTION The rudder of a ship guides it through the waters; it determines the ship's directions. It is the same way with your rudder: your tongue. It guides your life and determines the direction you travel … plus it determines in great extent what comes into your life because you're passing through those charted areas you predetermIned by your speech. As a student of coastal navigation I learned to chart my sailing trips. In the same way you are charting your future – as well as the present – by what comes out of your mouth. The rudder of a ship is small compared to the overall size of the vessel; however, it turns the vessel wherever the captain of the ship determines. Our brother James tells us: “Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires.” (James 3:4) King Solomon said, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Proverbs 18:21) “Death” words discourage: they are destructive and debilitating; they impair one's strength and make weak or feeble. “Life” words encourage: they minister hope and potential; they provide encouragement and a reason for continued perserverance. If you want to win in life, make a decision to live … and to help others do the same with your words! Your words influence direction for you … and for others. It has been said that a person has two voices: the one they use at home and the one they use with others. Example: Do you speak to your Rabbi or Pastor the same way that you speak to your spouse or your children at home? Synagogue and church gossipers can hurt others with their words. Here's another example: “Did you see what Melani wore last week?! She had 20 pounds of sugar in a five pound sack! And, did you notice the tattoo?!” April 14-15, 1912, the British luxury passenger liner, Titanic, sank en route to New York City from Southampton, England during its maiden voyage. The vessel sank with a loss of about 1,500 lives. It's rudder directed it into an iceberg. WORDS ARE LIKE FIRE Our beloved brother James – comparing the tongue to a ship's rudder – also tells us, “Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles.” (James 3:5)Many times I have seen where thousands of acres of beautiful forest land have been destroyed by a small campfire. The word used for “fire” in the original Greek language is the word “pur: which means more than just regular fire, it means “lightning.” Your words have the power to burn people! In Psalm 52:2, King David shares, “Your tongue devises destruction, like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.” In the Guiness Book of World Records – and confirmed by GPS – Craig Harrison of the UK’s Household Cavalry killed two Taliban insurgents from a distance of 2,474 m / 2.47 km (8,120 ft, or 1.54 miles) in November 2009. It took the 8.59 mm rounds almost three seconds to hit their targets, which were 914 m (3,000 ft) beyond the L115A3 sniper rifle’s recommended range. A third shot took out the insurgent’s machine gun. The rifle used was by Accuracy International. I mentioned this “sniper kill record” to let you know that your words can kill worldwide. Fire can hurt other than through your tongue – it can hurt people through your fingertips – for example, through E-mail or social media. WORDS MUST BE GUARDED Benjamin Franklin said, “Slip of the foot, you can recover. Slip of the tongue, you may never recover.” James also taught us, “For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.” (James 3:7-8) I know what you're thinking. You're thnking, “Well, if the tongue cannot be tamed WHY are you teaching on this?” My answer is, “Because we can learn to discipline ourselves.” That's why James said that if we don't stumble in our words (James 3:2) we are mature and able to “bridle” the whole body – a bridle directs a horse like a rudder directs a ship like a tongue directs a life. Monitoring your words may seem difficult at first, but it will help you to progress in right living. Learn to speak well of others – even if they don't speak well of you – because: 1. slander issues out of demonic, worldly wisdom; and, 2. God is the Judge. I recommend you study my teaching, Don't Let the Little Dogs Bother You (How to Shake Off Liars and Gossips) because it will help you to see immensely the inner workings of such evil. Here are some keys to help you guard your words: 1. Learn not to speak rashly. Zip your lips! 2. Pick your battles. Know when to hold them and when to fold them! 3. Speak life. Be a minister of the sanctuary. 4. Sleep on it (even your emails). In the morning you may say: “Glad I didn't do that.” WORDS GO OUT INTO ETERNITY For several years during the early 1970's I lived a few blocks from Richard and Karen Carpenter – The Carpenters. One of my favorite songs they recorded was: We've Only Just Begun. (Listen to it in the podcast) We had a mutual friend, Jim White, who owned a stationery store where Karen Carpenter and I used to do business. (By God's grace, I led the owner of that store to Christ at the counter one day and he became a wonderful Christian.) Karen died at the age of 33 of heart failure caused by anorexia nervosa in the city of Downey (Los Angeles area) where I still have an office. She had struggled for eight years with chronic anorexia. Karen had been down to 79 pounds in weight, and started back up to 110, but died one year later. What most people don't know is this: A radio personality one time referred to Karen as “Richard's chubby little sister.” Those words went out into eternity with Karen. Words determine direction – they're like fire – and they must be guarded. Words go out into eternity with blessing or cursing … with life or death. CHOOSE LIFE! The Album: The Carpenters' A Song For You (1972) dulcet (adjective) used to describe a sound that is soothing and soft, like the dulcet harmonies in a 70s pop song or the dulcet tones of a harp. It seems like Karen Carpenter invented dulcet tones. Her velvet buttery vocals floated and soared on songs like "We've Only Just Begun", "Top Of The World", "Close To You". Alongside her brother Richard, she created a signature sound built around layered arrangements and harmonies. Our guest, Pop Rocket's own Karen Tongson, sat with us on Heat Rocks to deep dive into the Carpenters seminal, Close To You, their second studio album released on August 19th, 1970. We talked about what made Karen Carpenter's voice inimitable and extraordinary, how the Carpenters invented the power ballad, Karen's enunciations and lower register, and listened to acapellas that made us all swoon. Karen's book "Why Karen Carpenter" makes its debut on June 1st and will cover all the ground we didn't in this episode, sans music, but Heat Rocks recommends that you listen to music of The Carpenters in prep! The Carpenters were an American vocal and instrumental duo of Karen and Richard Carpenter. They produced a distinct soft musical style, combining Karen's contralto vocals with Richard's arranging and composition skills. During their 14-year career, the Carpenters recorded ten albums, along with numerous singles and several television specials. The siblings were born in New Haven, Connecticut, and moved to Downey, California, in 1963. Richard took piano lessons as a child, progressing to California State University, Long Beach, while Karen learned the drums. They first performed together as a duo in 1965 and formed the jazz-oriented Richard Carpenter Trio followed by the middle-of-the-road group Spectrum. Signing as Carpenters to A&M Records in 1969, they achieved major success the following year with the hit singles " Close to You" and "We've Only Just Begun". Subsequently, the duo's brand of melodic pop produced a record-breaking run of hit recordings on the American Top 40 and Adult Contemporary charts, and they became leading sellers in the soft rock, easy listening and Adult contemporary music genres. The Carpenters had three No. 1 singles and five No. 2 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and fifteen No. 1 hits on the Adult Contemporary chart, in addition to twelve top 10 singles. They have sold more than 90 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling music artists of all time. The duo toured continually during the 1970s, which put them under increased strain; Richard took a year off in 1979 after he had become addicted to Quaaludes, while Karen suffered from anorexia nervosa. Their career together ended in 1983 following Karen's death from heart failure brought on by complications of anorexia. Extensive news coverage surrounding these circumstances increased public awareness of eating disorders. Though the Carpenters were criticized for their clean-cut and wholesome conservative image in the 1970s, their music has since been re-evaluated, attracting critical acclaim and continued commercial success. Things get experimental as we discuss "We've Only Just Begun" by the Carpenters. We not only talk about this song's unusual history and the variety of mixed emotions that any Carpenters tune evokes, but ALSO take an improvised dip into Karen's solo work. Paul Williams is the songwriting legend behind hits such as Barbra Streisand's Oscar-winning song, "Evergreen," Kermit the Frog's beloved "Rainbow Connection" and the Carpenters classic "We've Only Just Begun." Paul says that, at the height of his fame, an addiction to alcohol and drugs nearly destroyed him. After hitting rock bottom in a harrowing public meltdown, Paul got sober and started a difficult journey to discovering the true happiness he feels today. Together with author, director and screenwriter Tracey Jackson, Paul has written a book, "Gratitude and Trust," outlining six affirmations they say can help people become better versions of themselves. The co-authors claim that the affirmations work for fear-based habits like perfectionism, overeating, fear of intimacy and even smartphone obsession. Paul says, "When getting help was important enough for me to let go of ego and do it, I began to connect. And that connection, that brought me to life."

It's probably just as well that when I received the audio file of this week's show the bit at the beginning about having a cup of medicinal mushrooms to drink (chaga), was missing. Of course this was a source of much hilarity to Ross Allen, and nuff jokes abounded in the studio about Cosmic Jam/mushrooms/magic/hippies, which begs the question, am I? A hippy, that is... well I do drink medicinal mushrooms, am more or less vegan, love a bit of yoga/chi gong/meditation, however I don't wear tie-dye, smoke weed, or say "cosmic" much except in the context of the show. Hippies, if such a concept or subcultural group makes any sense in this day and age doubtless do come in many guises, and who's to say what kind of music they should like? In my experience a lot of those who ostensibly advocate the modern version of the "hippy" credo have pretty awful taste in music...psi-trance? Dodgy ambience with clichéd beats? It may be "cosmic", but it also lacks the soul and expansiveness that I search for in life and music. So what do I mean by cosmic? I've always thought of it as referencing Clinton's "Cosmic Slop"and the whole sic-fi, space obsessed vein that runs through music from Sun Ra to Earth Wind And Fire etc, that and the idea that the radio/airwaves/ether is a much more metaphysical space than the dance-floor, a space where music should necessarily and logically be more expansive. However my tastes also have a more terrestrial bent, I don't just spiral off into galactic reveries, at least not all the time! I very much doubt that I'm the best judge of my radio shows, after all they're not really for me. Having said that if I'm not pleasing myself the whole thing would be a fairly pointless exercise, after all the time that I've been in the game, I'd like to declare that I'm not really "in the game"; I'm just doing my thing, and I hope in doing so it reaches a few sympathetic ears and touches the odd soul. All I can say is that for whatever reasons, this particular Cosmic Jam pleased me more than most, maybe it's the balance of the tunes, the way I felt, the fact that I'd noticed the first stirrings of Spring that day, who knows? What I do know is that it kicks off with a cosmic nugget from Joe Claussell and Stefan Prescott's Spiritual Life which was undoubtedly one of my favourite labels during a period when I took much more interest in house music than I dip these days. The "Kuniyuki" remix of Slam Mode's "Pacifica" is certainly something of latter day hippy anthem, suitably expansive and a nice way to set up the show. Staying with newness for the first sequence there's more from The Rebirth, Rhonda Thomas, Native Dancer, and Ben Cox Band, all providing reasons to be cheerful and optimistic about the state of new music. Which is not something I'm feeling when I try to get with the latest crop electronic artists, but it's not for me to shout "emperor's new clothes".... The point I was trying to make about Mark Murphy's interpretation of Michel Colombier and Paul Williams "We Could Be Flying", (Williams also penned the words to We've Only Just Begun, so one might surmise he was something of an optimist!). The tune, which I've always loved, can certainly sound bombastic in the wrong hands, but Murphy brings such fluidity and looseness to proceedings he avoids those traps, and by underplaying the message he possibly nails the quintessential version. Another vocal gem follows, the album produced by (Jamaican born) Esmond Edwards, a man whose career is not often celebrated but whose credentials would rank him way up there amongst the greatest, is by Gloria Lynne, a vocalist who's career again had an enormous span and range, this version of "Out Of This World" is funky, fun, soulful and impeccably arranged. Following glorious Gloria, more lush female vocals from Flora Purim who at this time in the mid eighties was sounding beyond wonderful, her innate Brazilian swing and sweetness embellished by a seasoned huskiness. "Jogral" was written by the incredible José Neto, a Hendrix-like guitar genius who featured heavily in Airto and Flora's bands around this period. I saw Neto perform alongside Airto and Flora with the band Fourth World several times, and his playing never ceased to amaze and inspire. Grupo Afro Cuba Havana, a progressive Cuban outfit licenced to a European label, come with the fusion tinged but authentically lovely "Maria", Kahil El Zabaar I say plenty about on the show, and the Bill English tune "7th Ave Bill" is the kind of Jazz that needs little in the way of explanation, proper. The second hour kicks off with the Detroit Escalator Company's "Twilight Finding", a collaboration between DEC's Neil Ollivierra and Ayro, which may have been DEC's last release (2006), which is sad because Neil Ollivierra made some sumptuously gorgeous music under the DEC moniker. Matthew Halsall never fails to establish a great atmosphere on his recordings, they are conceptually almost flawless, and his treatment of Alice Coltrane's "Journey In Satchidananda" weighs in with the acoustic bass wringing every last drop of heaviness from that timeless line, and follows through with some beautiful flute work, and trumpet from the man himself. Independent and beautifully odd jazz follows in the shape of Jerry Granelli's "Aslan", bass-line heavy once again, as is Lani Hall's version of Lesley Duncan's "Love Song". Keeping the bass but getting supremely analogue synth (you don't get any better than T.O.N.T.O) Malcolm Cecil produced some of Gil Scott Heron's best work bringing his brand of sonic expertise into play, and the combination of that mellifluous synth bass and Gil's redoubtably upbeat "Better Days Ahead" is truly lovely. Last half hour veers between Latin tinged soulfulness and plain funkiness, the rare, the overlooked, the new and old all forming a fitting finale to a show which floated my boat. I hope it doesn't sink yours!! Peace, love, and medicinal mushrooms.. P.x 1. Slam Mode - Pacifica (Kuniyuki Takahashi remix) 2. Native Dancer - Until Frida Speaks 3. Rhonda Thomas - Oh Yay 4.
