In this penultimate episode of our Beastie Boy's series, Carolina and Marcus pick back up with the Beasties at the height of their success, fresh off the heels of a multi-platinum record and their first smash hit. As their fame and notoriety continues to grow, we see the group mature past their beer chugging frat boy personas to record one of the most definitive records of their career, Paul's Boutique. I thought National BBQ Month would be a great time to interview one of my mentors, the great Chris Hart from iQue. Dominant in the BBQ scene for a long time and winner of the Jack Daniels World Championship, Chris has written several cookbooks and continues to be an influence on cooks all across the country. Just a great guy, extremely smart and talented, and a lot of fun to talk to. Enjoy this fun talk with the legend Chris Hart.
Join Paul and Joe as they take a deep dive into the once controversial album Paul's Boutique. Of course as always there are rabbit holes and tangents aplenty.
Paul’s Boutique remains as thrilling and befuddling as ever, a deeply fun listen that somehow, someway remains on streaming platforms despite it’s impressively liberal usage of samples and references. To say a record still lacking a comprehensive list of samples used is dense feels like understatement. In this episode, Matt introduces two other exceptionally Dense albums in mewithoutYou’s appendix-and-Theology-course-necessitating Pale Horses and (it’s finally that episode, folks) Tool’s geometrically, spiritually, and Danny Carey-ly constructed Lateralus.

In this one the guys talk about the Beastie Boys for the whole episode not like the other 30 where Erick brings it up every couple of minutes
So you like samples, huh? Well, have all the samples in the world! In our Deltron 3030 episode, Producer Mike waxed poetic that hip-hop “can contain the whole world,” and the Beastie Boys tried to do exactly that on Paul’s Boutique. Seeking to level up as artists, the Beasties broke with Def Jam, moved to Los Angeles, and teamed up with producers and seasoned crate-diggers the Dust Brothers. The result is a miasma of light-speed references and samples, with a sonic palette drawing from ‘70s funk, old-school hip-hop, and whatever else the Dusts had lying around. It blew Mike’s mind as a teenager and budding producer, and this week he’s leading Rich, Phil and hip-hop noob John through a true bouillabaisse of an album, and a great hip-hop gateway drug for rock fans. Shake your rum-PAH! YOU WANNA BE ON TOP? That's what the boys in Breaking Away are asking themselves as they try and be the best cyclists and the best Hoosiers. Beastie Boys and The Fall also would like to be on top. But only one person can be on top. That person is Tyra Banks. And she has a show where for 24 seasons/cycles she holds a contest for who can be on top. And she always wins! To kick off 2020, The Sonic Collective member Scott Coates took us back to this highly influential album from the Beastie Boys. As we began the month of this review we were made aware of the news of the passing of Neil Peart from the legendary Canadian band Rush. We decided we would also do a mini review of the Rush 2112 album as well. Weird combo... amiright? For the full album review details and score breakdown we always recommend you visit our website at TheSonicCollective.com. Enjoy friends.

On this week's podcast, Libby, Ben, and Leo sat down with Damon Lindelof, creator, executive producer, and showrunner of HBO's 'Watchmen' in advance of the show's finale. Over the course of the conversation, Damon discussed audience expectations, the fate of Lube Man (and his unseen sidekick), the impetus behind American Hero Story, if there was ever a plan for PeteyPedia to include video assets, how he built the 'Watchmen' writers' room, Liza Richardson's work as music supervisor and how she worked in concert with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, how other shows in the current television landscape like 'Atlanta,' 'Legion,' and 'Mr. Robot' impacted the story he and the writers wanted to tell, as well as a slight tangent into Paul's Boutique's place in the Beastie Boys' discography. We also do our due diligence, and ask the obligatory "Will There Be A Season 2 of 'Watchmen?'

Opinions of this record might have been mixed upon it’s release in 1989 but today it’s universally praised as the Beastie’s masterpiece and a classic of (any) the genre. Episode 8 features Amy Winehouse's Grammy-winning album "Back to Black" and the Beastie Boys' "Paul's Boutique". Both albums were the second releases from each artist and demonstrate expanded songwriting and music beyond the first albums. Back by The Dap Kings, Amy Winehouse brings together soul, jazz and rhythm and blues to make an honest story of her life. Paul's Boutique is heralded as one of the finest rap albums ever recorded and contains an amazing mix by The Dust Brothers with layers of sampled tracks.
In early November of 1990, my roommates and some friends stayed up all night drinking. I think it was drinking, and we decided to get some instruments and go down to ODU and play music for money. We first stared chanting some shit we made up, but because we mentioned broccoli, people thought we were making incisive commentary about HW Bush. We earned enough money to drink again that night. That is not a joke, though we were by intent. Anyway, we made up a couple of songs and rushed out a tape and played a couple open mics at Cogan's, and then acknowledged that we really just wanted to get wasted and listen to Paul's Boutique or whatever jazz or 13th Floor Elevators or Velvet Underground or whatever we had on hand until we watched whatever movie we could round up before we passed out, and we stopped rocking out as the GTC. Sometime in January 1991, we watched "In Cold Blood" and I kinda freaked out and got a job rolling tortillas at Colley Cantina, a practice that ended when I left Norfolk to move to Colorado.
Dan LeRoy, the man who literally wrote the book on Paul's Boutique (both the 33 1/3 entry and a follow up For Whom the Cowbell Tolls), joins Bill and Brian to talk about the Beastie Boys and their 1989 sophomore album. Dan talks about discovering the band as an early adopter of rap and then loving this album in his college days. Dan also shares his experience of writing his books and working through the many samples present on this album. Dan, Brian, and Bill discuss the Dust Brothers and Matt Dike's influence on the album, the maturation of the band, the importance of (or lack thereof) a hit single, Adam Yauch guiding "A Year and a Day," Mike Diamond disavowing how important their contributions are, and much more as we make our way through the album track by track!

Welcome back dear listener for another edition of “Somebody Likes It”, the show that every week takes a purposefully ambiguous concept and rambles in circles obscuring it even more. The reviews are in from the first show and they are resoundingly MIXED! That right, some of you found our stories hilarious and some of you just wanted us to get to the point. I will say that I feel confident that as the weeks go on we’ll be pulling those two extremes together, right now we’re still figuring this stuff out. So there. Ok, on to this week’s show. This week we’ll be discussing Paul’s Boutique, the record that set the stage for the second act of the Beastie Boys career. I think after the show we all walked away with a better understanding of why Ryan thinks the Beastie Boys are always yelling at him. Purchase Paul's Boutique on Amazon ### Coming Up ### Fleetwood Mac and their FM Radio Juggernaut “Rumors”. Some people out there really like that record.
