I believe that most parents have heard about how synthetic dyes are “bad” for us and should probably be avoided. However, I don't think we really understand the reasons why and the science behind it. It's just not talked about enough, unfortunately. But, after talking to today's guests and learning more about the truth of synthetic dyes and the science about how they affect us, especially our kids, is seriously disturbing and downright maddening! Thankfully, our guests set out to discover and share the truth in their upcoming documentary, To Dye For. In my opinion, it's something that everyone needs to know about. Who are Whitney & Brandon Cawood? Brandon and Whitney Cawood are parents-turned-filmmakers who embarked on a fascinating quest after discovering their child's sensitivity to synthetic dyes. Their documentary journey delves into the profound impacts of these chemicals, featuring meetings with leading experts and heartfelt interviews with affected families. Through poignant stories and scientific evidence, they unveil the hidden perils of synthetic dyes, igniting awareness of their far-reaching effects on individuals and families. It's a powerful message that hopes to ignite change! When Whitney and Brandon are not working and advocating, this Georgia couple loves to be outdoors, go camping, running, and enjoy time with their son and daughter. What Did We Discuss? In this episode, I chat with Whitney and Brandon about, you guessed it, the impact of synthetic dyes on our children. We discuss how they became passionate about this issue and what parents really need to know about synthetic dyes that they discovered through their research. Here are several of the questions that we covered in our conversation: Tell us a bit about your personal journeys as parents and how they inspired the work you do today. Did you face any challenges in your research? Are there any misconceptions that parents need to be aware of?  What are some of the harmful side effects of synthetic dyes? What is it that parents really need to know? Can you share a memorable moment from your interviews with families affected by synthetic dyes? What role do you believe policymakers should play in addressing the risks associated with synthetic dyes? How has your personal journey influenced your perspective on food choices and ingredient transparency? What specific actions or changes do you hope come from this project? What advice do you have for other parents who may be navigating similar challenges with synthetic dyes? My Thoughts This episode is for anyone caring for children — parents, grandparents, caregivers, teachers, daycare and preschool employees, etc. After listening to it, I hope it sparks a fire inside of you like it did me to make even a small change because it's more than obvious that change must happen. I am so incredibly grateful for the powerful work that Brandon and Whitney are doing and for taking the time to chat with us about this important topic. What can you do?? Listen to this episode, watch their documentary (available January 14th), and speak up! These companies are putting profits over people... and our children and we deserve better. Thankfully, we have the power to make it happen. Let us know your thoughts and what you plan to do to make a difference. When Whitney met Mary she saw a professional woman with sharp wit and a lively countenance. Like so many grievers, Mary's grief was not visible on her surface. But when Mary confided in Whitney that she knew something of sudden loss and traumatic grief, when her new boyfriend died in a motorcycle accident, it was clear from the conversation that Mary's experience had changed her life. Whitney reflected on what she had been like at the age of 24, when life was endless possibilities and she embodied the youthful innocence that nothing bad would ever happen to her. What would that be like to have that ripped away overnight? And how would the 24-year-old Whitney have handled the grief she knows so well now? Whitney believes she would have have done well. And that was why she wanted to have Mary on the show to share a young adult's perception of grief and the ways it has changed her life. Are you a huge fan of the show? In this episode, Emmy-nominated and Telly Award-winning Whitney Reynolds talks about helping listeners “fall into hope,” which is her trademark that changed the dialogue for talk TV. She shares from experience, after transforming her challenging childhood. Host John Cerasani says the sincerity and wholeheartedness of Whitney's candor “bleeds honesty.” He also commends her for unbiased, positive messaging that differentiates her from many others.   Topics covered in this interview: Whitney's “dynamic, inspirational connection with her audience,” which she attributes to knowing her gift at a young age. The challenges and successes of owning The Whitney Reynolds Show, and being independent from the networks. Her rise from being on TV at age 23, later growing her own show into 6 markets, and becoming nationally syndicated in 2021. The “God wink” of hosting the public media awards on PBS, and bringing her “mission-based” show there, based on creating “a safe space.” The differences of being on multiple platforms, from her show to other arenas like iHeartRadio. Her commitment to being on TV for the long-term, and her spiritual practice to nurture her soul as she juggles many family and work obligations. The significance of calling herself “Chief Inspirational Officer” at work and at home.   About Whitney Reynolds: Whitney believes in more seats at the table, inspiration in the hard moments, and hope for all.  This mindset for unique programming originally bucked the trend when The Whitney Reynolds Show launched in 2012 on PBS. The show's inspirational mission developed from Whitney's firsthand experience with a challenging childhood. She had the gift to gab and combined that to create a program that flips the script–one that invites viewers to switch seats and feel seen for exactly where they are. She is the Executive Producer, Host and the "Chief Inspo Officer" of the Telly Award-winning and Emmy-nominated Whitney Reynolds Show. Prior to launching her nationally syndicated program, she worked in news for NBC and went on to launch her first talk show on that network. During college at Baylor University she interned for Good Morning America and fell in love with the national stage and its potential reach. When Whitney was just 25 years old she stepped into owning her own show and created Whitney Reynolds Media.  Not being owned by the network truly jump started her entrepreneurial journey. Whitney's business mentor is Melissa Bernstein of Melissa & Doug who, like Whitney, also started her business in an extra space in her home, however it has since grown to a $500M company. Whitney's “safe space” mission however, doesn't stop with her TV program. Since 2013 she has hosted a motivational “give back” segment on iHeartRadio and in 2021 launched a national iHeart Podcast, Pop and Positivity. She also authored Beyond The Interview and has a column in Cancer Wellness Magazine.  Over the years Whitney has helped bring in more than $2-million in fundraising for local and global charities through her media work. She currently sits on the Advisory Council for Dress For Success and is on the board for The Service Club of Chicago. Born and raised in Oklahoma, Whitney has learned how to combine southern charm with big city hustle. Her motto is: “If the door closes, find the darn window.” Whitney lives in Chicago, in the Roscoe Village neighborhood with her husband, Dave, and her twins, Marlowe and Acher, and their shih tzu, Sir Crouton. When she's not on camera, it's guaranteed you will still find her talking, she simply loves people and their stories.   Follow Whitney: Website: https://www.whitneyreynolds.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/whitneyreynoldsshow/about/ Facebook: https://facebook.com/WhitneyReynoldsTV Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/whitney_reynolds/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/whitneyreynolds   Follow John: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/johncerasani TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@johncerasani LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/johncerasani   More 2000 Percent Raise Episodes and Content: https://linktr.ee/2000percentraise Produced by: https://socialchameleon.us

Whitney Johnson is the Co-Founder and CEO of Disruption Advisors, a talent development company. Whitney is a globally-recognized thought leader. author, keynote speaker, executive coach, consultant, and a popular LinkedIn Learning instructor. In this conversation, Whitney discusses how musicality has lessons for the business world, and the wide applications of the S-Curve. https://bit.ly/TLP-328   Key Takeaways [2:35] At her daughter's prompting during the pandemic, Whitney and her family started watching Korean dramas. The family became obsessed with them. Whitney now studies Korean for two minutes a day on Duolingo. Whitney describes the characteristics of Korean dramas. [5:22] Whitney majored in music, studying classical piano and jazz. Because of her musical background, when she structures a keynote, a book, or a podcast, she looks for musicality and a musical structure to it. Musical structure and musicality inform the work she does. Also, as an experienced accompanist, she knows how to be second, allowing her to be a good interviewer, and as a coach, to listen well. [7:04] Brett Mitchell, the former conductor of the Colorado Symphony, said that music is what happens between the notes. Whitney discusses pauses relating to leadership and cites Clayton Christiansen, saying that partway through his career, Clayton Christiansen started a practice of praying before teaching a class. Once he started that practice, he started to have a significant impact on his students. [8:42] Whitney suggests that before you speak, have a meeting, or a coaching session, you pause and think about the person you're about to speak to, and how to convey to the person that they matter to you, that is an element of leadership. [10:33] Wayne Muller, author of Sabbath, pointed out the pauses in Martin Luther King's exclamation, “Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!” [11:41] Gino Wickman, in The EOS Life, recommends entrepreneurs take sabbaticals. One of Jim's clients just took a sabbatical and reported that stepping back and taking a break allowed them to reflect and then grow. [12:20] Whitney has a LinkedIn Learning class, Grow Yourself, Grow Your Leaders, and a book, Smart Growth. Whitney's view is that we are wired to grow. Virtuous growth is growing in such a way that everyone around you grows as well. She believes that human growth is unbounded. [13:23] Sociologist Everett Rogers applied the S-Curve to the study of how quickly innovation is adopted. Working with Clayton Christiansen, Whitney realized she could apply the S-Curve to individual change and growth. Growth comes in three stages: slow (launch), fast (sweet spot), and slow (master place). Every time you start a new role or a new job, you go through the curve. This is covered in Smart Growth. [14:45] Whitney's LinkedIn course focuses on how to create the conditions where people around you can grow, with the resources they need, and how they can feel connected to what they're doing and the people they're working with. Whitney also talks about building resilience and nurturing people. If you can do all those things, you're creating conditions wherein the people around you can grow. [16:59] Whitney makes the underlying assumption that if you will grow yourself then, by the contagion effect, the people around you will grow. Then, by default, your business will grow. [17:49] You can manage your organization as a portfolio of curves. The people at the curve's launch point will need the most support. They will also have a fresh perspective, opening the door to innovation. You want about 20% of the people in your organization to be new, 60% to be in the sweet spot, and 20% in master, ready for a new challenge. This is a good distribution for innovation. [20:10] De-prioritize the things you do really well that somebody else could do. Whitney gives an example from a client. If you stop doing the things you should delegate to others, you will have time to do the things only you can do, and you get out of the way for them to work on the steep part of the S-Curve. [23:06] Every organization needs to have, as part of their vision, growing human beings and helping them reach their potential. The vision starts with the founders, and as people join the organization, they begin to co-create the vision with the founders. Everyone helps each other grow. In the most fluid, powerful organizations, everyone contributes to the creation of the vision. [26:56] Whitney addresses growth pre-pandemic, in-pandemic, and post-pandemic. A lot of adaptation and resilience have been required. When people are under stress, they go to default stress behaviors. You need to make sure people work together and not against each other. People want to grow but are not always sure how to do it. This goes back to Whitney's course, Grow Yourself, Grow Your Leaders. [28:39] Whitney asks Jan and Jim for their thoughts on getting people to work together under stress. Jim states that when people are stressed they need time and space to solve their problems. People are pausing to figure out how to work together. People need time and space to get up to game speed. Executives are not paid to be busy. Pausing is a good way to grow by asking yourself tough questions. [31:35] Whitney has an assessment that she administers to clients. It includes seven accelerants of growth. The one that ranks the lowest is frequently “Step back to grow.” People are not taking time to pause and reflect. Whitney quotes Tiffany Shlain who asks, “What if we thought of ‘rest' as technology because the promise of technology is to make you more productive?” [34:17] Egon Zehnder surveyed 1,000 executives whether they strongly agreed that to transform your organization you need to transform yourself. Before the pandemic, 18% of executives agreed. After the pandemic, 805 of the executives agreed. The only way you have the moral authority to ask people to change is if you, yourself, are changing. The fundamental unit of change is the individual at every level. [37:52] Whitney lists some people that inspire her, and why: Rashika Tolshan, who wrote about the Queen of England passing away, Brené Brown, Musician Jacob Collier, author Richie Norton, and NFL QB Steve Young. Each of them inspired Whitney with their visions of growth. [41:35] When Whitney was making her list of influential people, her default was to go to all men. She had to make sure she included some women. She had to be very mindful and deliberate to determine who is actually influencing her and she wanted a diversity of perspectives. Jim highlights the leadership lesson of intentionality. [42:49] Whitney's audience homework: On the topic of pausing and resting, listen to these two episodes of Whitney's Step Back to Grow podcast: Episode 139 with filmmaker Tiffany Schlain and Episode 180. Don't avoid taking a pause to rest. [43:57] Closing quote: Remember, “It's all to do with the training: you can do a lot if you're properly trained.” — Queen Elizabeth II   Quotable Quotes “Because of being a musician, I think of things in a musical sort of way. When I'm structuring a keynote; … a book; … a podcast, there's always a sense of, ‘Is there a musicality to it; is there a musical structure to it?'” — Whitney “I wrote a piece about the importance of taking a break, that you needed to rest because the ability to rest was going to allow you to recharge so that you could then move forward.” — Whitney “For me, growth is our default setting. We're wired to grow.” — Whitney “Every time we start something new, we're on a new S-Curve. There are three stages. There's the launch point that feels slow, there's the sweet spot, … where growth is fast, … and … the master place, where growth is … slow.” — Whitney “People who are successful are intentional. It doesn't just fall in your lap. … Successful people are intentional people and [a high] level intentionality is something to be admired and something for people listening to this podcast to take away.” — Jim   Resources Mentioned Theleadershippodcast.com Sponsored by: Darley.com Rafti Advisors. We are wrapping up our four-part series for foster care month with this conversation from a birth mother. It is so important for us to include all members of the triad and we're so thankful that Whitney came on to share her story with us. Whitney's story is unique because she was adopted herself, so she has a lot of personal connections to this topic. When Whitney was 21-years-old, she became pregnant and placed her son for adoption. She wanted her son to have all of the things that she had and more, and facing the reality that she did not have the resources to provide that. We talk about how a lot of times people don't know what to say when it comes to adoption, and how important it is to acknowledge that all adoption stories involve loss. Real Job Talk
Episode 70: Realities of working parents with Whitney Casares

Real Job Talk

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 14, 2021 54:55

Welcome to Real Job Talk, Whitney Casares- the author of the Working Mom Blueprint, pediatrician, mom, and supporter of moms in the workplace through her community at www.modernmommydoc.com. We invited Whitney to join us to talk about the realities of being a working mom, and also to discuss how managers, teams, and companies can support working parents. The pandemic has shed a light on the experience of being a working mom, and has given us a behind-the-scenes look at all of the things parents are juggling while also showing up at work. Whitney is the type of person who leans into everything she does- including being a pediatrician and a leader of her pediatric group. When Whitney became a mom she realized how hard it was to balance everything and felt like she was losing it in all areas. She started asking herself what she wanted her working mom life to look like, what gave her purpose, and she talked with other working moms about the inner conflict she was feeling. She coaches women on thinking about what their center vision is and what they want to define their life. Whitney's 5 center points are: * Connection with her kids * Personal wellness * Contribution to other women in a meaningful way * Financial freedom * Travel/adventure/new experiences She decluttered her physical space and schedule so that when making decisions she has freedom to put up boundaries against things that don't serve her center vision. That vision and those boundaries really come down to values- such as thinking about her children as being attached but independent. It's hard to break the pattern of being a pleaser and putting others in front of ourselves. It takes work (Whitney worked with a therapist and others). Surrounding yourself with like-minded people who are supportive of you is key to being true to yourself and your goals. As a working parent, choosing your volunteering wisely is a key to preserving sanity and energy. Whitney knows that the example she shows her daughters of being a CEO and managing with empathy teaches them the value of hard work, the ability of women to succeed without running ourselves into the ground, showing the value of rest and rejuvenation. We ask Whitney her thoughts on how society doesn't support working parents (not being open off-hours, asking parents to help in the classroom etc), and how companies can support parents. Whitney mentions Mary-Beth Ferrante of Work 360 talking about Parenting Out Loud, which means having people at all levels of the organization feel comfortable talking about themselves as parents. If the CEO is talking about having to leave work to take their kid to the orthodontist, the accountant will feel free to do the same. Whitney talks about asking what you need as support as a parent, but she talks about mapping out solutions that meet all of the requirements of the job that needs to be done. It allows people to show up to work as themselves and identifying the problem and the solution. You can't expect your employer to solve your problem, and when you create the solution you have more control over it. We asked Whitney about Lean In and the message to working moms. Whitney feels like Sheryl Sandberg's book represented a huge pendulum swing, and now we've moved things back towards the middle which now will move things forward. She also criticizes the original Lean In messaging that women need to be more masculine, especially since our emotional acuity is what makes us better at work. Hiding our femininity does not service our teams or ourselves. We talk about not giving 100% and giving 70% in order to have reserves for ourselves, and Whitney discusses selective mediocrity. Some things require 100% of our attention, but others we can phone it in. We asked Whitney what she wishes everyone working w parents, esp moms, knew, and she said to be aware of the depth of our conflict, and the desire to do it all and be it all. How we carry the mental load and a constant checklist of what our families need. Also to look at people as having moments and being able to take care of themselves during life changes and they will be more invested in the organization over time and thinking about what they can contribute over time. Seeing people as people and supporting them through change helps with retention. How do we support people as parents to make sure we have parents on our teams? Having representation at the highest levels of leadership is critical in order to make sure people's needs are represented. AND if you're the representative, you stand up for the people you represent. To make change, it's ok to start small. We talked about the great resignation and how over 3M women have left the workplace, and Whitney asks women to try and keep 1 foot in the door, but also for other people to mentor them back. People will come back to places that allow transparency and acknowledge the balance between parenting and work. Whitney and James Owens join the show to talk about the origins and usefulness of the Enneagram. They explain how identifying your Enneagram type will be beneficial in your life and the importance of understanding how this impacts your clinical work. Understanding relationship patterns within the lens of the Enneagram will allow the therapeutic relationship to thrive as the clinician helps the client or clients see their own personality within the relationship. Tune in as we chat about meeting treatment goals and having success in work and relationships through the Enneagram. Meet Whitney & James Owens Whitney Owens (MA, LPC) and James P. Owens (MDiv, MA) are helping professionals with a passion for empowering others. Whitney is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Private Practice Consultant. She is the owner of a group private practice, Water's Edge Counseling, in Savannah, Georgia. In addition to running her practice, she offers individual and group consulting through Practice of the Practice. She hosts a weekly podcast called the Faith in Practice Podcast to help clinicians start and grow their practices with a faith-based background. Whitney has presented multiple times at professional counseling and practice conferences throughout the United States. James is an Enneagram teacher and founder of Working the Enneagram, LLC. He received his Enneagram certification through the Enneagram Spectrum Training with Jerome Wagner. James holds a Master of Divinity, as well as a second Master's degree in Christian Practice. As both a pastor and teacher, James helps churches, small businesses, and other organizations understand how to utilize the Enneagram to positively impact their members and missions. James has been interviewed on several podcasts and has spoken to multiple groups on the Enneagram specifically in conjunction to counseling/psychotherapy practice and clinical work. Whitney and James have been married since 2007 and together they are the parents of two beautiful girls. The Importance of Knowing Your Enneagram Type You can spend many hours, days, and years understanding the Enneagram. One of the unique things about the Enneagram is it expresses the motives behind people's behaviors. As a therapist, we have to know ourselves to do good work. If you know your Enneagram, it helps you understand your motives in therapy. Whitney is Enneagram type 1, which means she is the reformer and is very controlling. When Whitney started as a therapist, she wanted to know exactly what to say at all times. Since Whitney knows that about herself, she found ways not to control the sessions and not to control her clients. Identifying Your Strengths And Weaknesses The Enneagram will help identify the motives behind your actions. In addition, the Enneagram will assist you in determining your strengths and weaknesses and identify the ways you behave when you're doing very well and the ways you act when you're not doing so well. The system is not static; it's a dynamic system. The Enneagram acknowledges that we all are different when in stressful situations vs. happy and secure situations. James is a type 5; he can take on a leadership role when he is doing well. However, under stress, James tends to move towards the characteristics of type 7. As you learn your type and discover more about yourself, you'll identify the directions that you go in when you're doing well and doing not so well. Using The Enneagram With Your Clients If you understand your client's Enneagram number, and they're sharing things going on in their life, then you can listen to where they're coming from to know where they're at. Clients might act like they're doing okay, but then they share something that's moving into other numbers that you know are not the healthy place for them. So, you can help clients bring their positive characteristics to the table. The Enneagram is a great way to evaluate your client's levels of emotional health. Each Enneagram type also has its own levels of functioning. As you become familiar with each type, you'll be able to see those characteristics in your clients. The Seven Deadly Sins For Your Enneagram Type Each Enneagram type has a deadly sin. So, you actually want to find the spiritual discipline that is the opposite of your sin. When you go into your root sin, you need to practice the opposite to find a healthy place. Here is a list of the deadly sins and what spiritual discipline will help you get to a healthy place: -      Type 1: Anger. You should practice serenity and letting go. -      Type 2: Pride. You should practice humility. -      Type 3: Deceit. You should practice authenticity. -      Type 4: Envy. You should practice balance. -      Type 5: Avarice. You should practice being non-attached. -      Type 6: Anxiety. You should practice courage. -      Type 7: Gluttony. You should practice sobriety. -      Type 8: Lust. You should practice innocence. -      Type 9: Complacent. You should practice action. Helping Clients Improve Their Relationships The Enneagram can allow you to help your clients with their relationships. The Enneagram is extremely helpful for marital counseling. Once you understand your partner's Enneagram, people can find a new appreciation and patience for their partner. When your clients understand their own number, it helps them understand how they interact with other people in their lives. Whitney says she does Enneagram work in her group practice. In fact, Whitney says they discuss their Enneagram types and how much they understand themselves during the interview process. Plus, knowing people's Enneagram types helps you appreciate your employees. It all starts with a strong relationship. Whether you are talking about the parent-child relationship or the educator-child relationship, it is so important to have a connection with the children in your care. In some areas, we’ve lost our way. And we need to get back on track to help develop our kids’ values, education, and strengthen relationships.   That’s why I invited my dear friend, Whitney Johnson, to chat with me for this episode of the My Divine Life Podcast. Whitney is the founder of Real Muvahood LLC, a parenting support company devoted to teaching and supporting black moms through the challenges that they face through motherhood, or “muvahood” as she calls it. Her work centers around helping women build strong relationships that support them and recognizing their purpose, developing their own identity, and creating harmony between work and home life.   In addition to being a rock star mom and your biggest cheerleader, Whitney has also been known as the “preschool whisperer” after her many years in early childhood development. The insight she gives us today is unmatched. I took notes! And you need to as well. Let’s go!   Show Notes: [2:21] - Before founding her company, Real Muvahood, Whitney was known as the “preschool whisperer” on social media and noticed that all moms had the same things in common. They wanted to be good moms but lacked the time and energy and needed support. [4:20] - Whitney shares how she started this journey in childcare. She discovered she was really great with kids. [5:05] - Once Whitney had her son, she had to make a lot of changes. She knew how to take care of others’ kids, but she was scared to be a mom herself. She was scared to ask for help. [7:57] - When Whitney noticed that the kids who were behaving wonderfully for her were acting out with their parents, it clicked for her that she needed to help the moms create a safe and structured environment for their kids. [9:40] - Whitney’s Muvahood method allows women to discover themselves and show up to be their full selves for their children. This also helped their kids continue their good behavior at home. [11:15] - Jameelah shares that her son is struggling in school because his teacher doesn’t understand his gifts. Whitney also shares a story about her own son as well. [13:23] - Whitney states that there should be more black teachers to fully understand the culture and partner with parents. [14:37] - Teachers have the knowledge but the challenge is to make sure that each kid is getting what they need from school. [15:34] - Jameelah knows that if her son were in an all-black school, he would be the star student. [16:04] - As a preschool teacher, Whitney has worked with all kinds of kids. It is not about the race and upbringing of the child, but the way the teacher sets up their environment that supports each child fully. [16:29] - Class size can also be a serious issue with controlling student behavior. [17:41] - As parents, we always want to put our children in the best place we can. [18:38] - Whitney shares how her method is catered towards moms. As she shares in today’s episode, the breakdown of how she supports moms is generalized as she doesn’t know everyone’s personal details. [19:53] - Whitney’s method helps you uncover what you need from yourself, what’s missing, and how you can get it to feel comfortable in your role as a caregiver. [20:21] - There are five steps that go with each letter of MUVAH. [20:41] - M stands for mindset. Whitney gives an example of what this means. [22:08] - U stands for uncover. This is when you discover what it is you and your child need. [23:02] - V is for validation which gives your child the validation they need to support what you are working on together. This is where you model for your children. [23:53] - A stands for activate. You built everything in your home and modeled for them. Now you activate this new skill at school or with your child’s caregiver. [24:52] - H is for help and this is when you reach out to the child’s caregiver to partner together and communicate with each other to support the child. [26:19] - Children only know so much so we want to give them grace. But we don’t want to let that grace get out of hand to the point that they continue to learn boundaries. [27:20] - When it comes to boundaries, you have to make sure they’re enforceable. [27:57] - If you have to discipline your child, you need to make sure it is age appropriate. [28:36] - Whitney then says to look at the entire situation. Look at what happened and find out why it happened. The discipline needs to relate to the incident for kids to make the connection. [29:52] - The next step is that the child understands what happened, why it was wrong, what the discipline is, and what they should be doing instead. Make sure you are on the same page. [31:59] - When children aren’t making the connection between their actions and the consequence, they may start to be fearful of discipline and it could affect their confidence. [33:15] - People should not be applauded for things they are supposed to do, even children. [34:03] - Jameelah applies Whitney’s age-appropriate point to other relationships. You don’t want to treat an adult like a child. [35:31] - Whiteney’s Muvah method can be applied to any relationship and she admits that through learning it, she has learned to manage her adult relationships as well. [37:01] - Sometimes we get frustrated with teachers. But we have to remember the school system and the parameters that teachers have to work within and have grace going into any situation.  [39:15] - Parents and teachers need to have a connection to help children thrive. [40:22] - It is important for teachers, parents, and caregivers to create experiences for children. [41:49] - Diversity needs to be normalized in the classroom. Tony from Lacey has asked us for help with his fiancée Whitney who he says sold her engagement ring to pay some bills. He says he can’t believe she would just casually sell off something so important that he saved so long to get for her. When we ask him to clarify if she sold it or pawned it he doesn’t seem to know the difference but also says it doesn’t matter – she should have talked to him first. When Whitney comes on she says she did try to talk to him but he refuses to ever have hard conversations around money. She says money is incredibly tight and she pawned the ring to literally pay the rent, and she says she will absolutely get it back. Also she points out they have never actually set a date for the wedding even though they got engaged long before the pandemic and she might be more concerned about needing to wear the ring if the wedding was looming. But Whitney is mostly frustrated that Tony wouldn’t talk to her but called a radio station about it. The P1’s think these two can work it out. Whitney Nicely's first piece of investment property was land. She bought land at a bank foreclosure auction for $1,200. This included tax, title, and fees. When Whitney bought the land, she didn't even know where Decatur, Tennessee was. The land belonged to a subdivision development where a lady had bought it for $69,000, paid on it for 5 years, then let it go into foreclosure because it wasn't worth $69,000 at the time. Whitney sent out yellow letters to the neighbors of the property. They were interested in her offer to buy their land from them, but they wanted what they paid for their parcels. She was willing to pay them the money she had paid for her piece at auction, so she turned them down. Today, the land still sits empty because the development is progressing slowly. However, Whitney has a CHOICE about what she does with the land. She may be able to sell it in the future for $30,000 or so. She may build a house on it and sell that for $100,000. She's in no hurry. Property taxes are cheap and so are the HOA fees that keep it mowed. Join Whitney today as she talks about the pros and the cons of using land to invest in real estate and the choice investing in land gives you. -- Do You Want Immediate Access to the Top, Easy-to-Implement Steps to Closing Your Very First Deal?! Whitney is a very attractive, slim, blonde, blue-eyed, white woman; not the typical look associated with severe drug addiction. Whitney had her wisdom teeth removed as a teenager and received Vicodin for the pain. This was her first abuse of opiate drugs and it led her to heroin and meth. For most of the past five years, Whitney has been homeless, living on the streets of Santa Cruz, California. Her addiction caused her to lose several jobs and to steal from homes and stores, where the hardware store became her specialty. Her boyfriend went behind bars for these crimes and got cleaned in jail. When Whitney saw the improvements in his health, she was inspired to get cleaned. Whitney detoxed alone and now lives in the Gault House sober living environment in Santa Cruz, California.

On this episode of House Flip Masters Holly is joined by guest Whitney Nicely. Whitney has been called the Queen of Weird Real Estate in Eastern Tennessee.  Whitney started flipping houses in 2009 with her parents, her mother was a real estate investor and she knew that she would  become one herself. The first house that she flipped with her parents is when she fell in love with the process of flipping homes; she also fell in love with this particular house and ended up moving into it instead of her parents selling it. In 2013, Whitney and her brother were buying houses with cash, like her mom always did.  They bought 3 houses and one of them was a total loss.  With the two houses that they had left she realized that they had their life savings in them. Also, with only two houses she realized she was never going to get ahead.   Whitney knew she had to figure out a way to do real estate without putting any of her own money into the pot.  Since than Whitney learned about lease options and did her first deal in the Spring of 2014.  Although Whitney has only been using this method for the past 3 years she has done over 50 deals without having to use any of her own money. Currently she has 19 apartments and 7 chunks of land that she hasn’t had to use her own money to purchase.  Holly knows that a lot of people are interested in getting into real estate don’t have a lot of money which is why she is so excited to have Whitney share her success with listeners. Whitney says that her favorite way to purchase a home is through lease options, or as she refers to them as band-aids, because they can fix any situation.  Holly asks Whitney to share with listeners some situations in which a lease option is good choice.  Whitney says that when a house is over leveraged a lease option is a great choice to get a piece of property without using any of your own money.  Holly asks Whitney to share how a lease option works and what the process might be like. A lease option is an agreement that allows someone to rent the house with the option to purchase it at a point in the future at an agreed upon price today. Whitney shares that when she was a normal real estate agent she had her license for 18 months and only made $1,200 in 8 weeks using lease option she made $15,000 doing a lease option that she posted on Zillow.  Whitney shares with Holly that she recently found out from her lawn guy that he owned 13 properties, and after talking to him Whitney decided to buy a few of them from him. The first house that she bought was a cracked house-- the house was literally cracked and had been partially burnt. An interested party saw the listing and wanted to buy the house from Whitney.  She was able to turn her small purchase into big money by offering the right option to the buyer.  When her lawn guy found out that she turned around and made more money on it than he had initially charged her Whitney decided to give him a little more than she originally agreed to. The second house that she got from her lawn guy is not proving to be as successful as the first, but because it is not successful Whitney has decided that she is going to owner finance this house and put a big pink “Whitney buys houses” sign in the front and use it as advertising in that neighborhood. Whitney says that her bandit signs get her a lot of homes to look at so she is excited to see what this option will bring her.   She will actually own the land instead of renting billboard space.  When Whitney started doing lease options and owner financing she said that everyone else was working in one suburb so she decided to go the other direction and work in another county. She decided to do this so that she could get the experience and learn to play with the big boys in her neighborhood and have the portfolio to back it up. Holly mentions that Whitney has provided an awesome cheat sheet for listeners that will go over what she has talked

This week on Barbell Shrugged we have the pleasure of chatting with Whitney Miller, “Miss United States” beauty pageant contestant turned MMA Fighter.    That’s quite a transition, but then again it’s pretty obvious that Whitney is a highly motivated individual. She decided to give Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and boxing a try simply because it was, “The hardest thing I could do.” That’s an extraordinary, uncommon attitude for sure.    If nothing else, Whitney understands better than most that progress comes for those who are willing to push past their current limits and perceived boundaries. You have to get well outside of your comfort zone in order to really improve, even if that means training and sparring against men. You can check out this pic of her applying a rear-naked choke to Joe Rogan. She also tossed an arm triangle on Michael Bledsoe during the filming of this episode, which might have been the first time he’s been choked since his BJJ blue belt ceremony back in 2008. No, this is not a lady you want to mess with. She will make you go unconscious!    Whitney does a lot of training in order to pick up all of these new grappling skills, but she also spends plenty of time in the gym. Barbells have always been in the rotation, even during her pageant days. She preferred feeling powerful and strong. In her words, “I’m never going to be tiny and skinny with big boob’s. So, I’m just going to go out there and be completely who I am.” It’s hard to argue with that strategy for any competition. Whitney also has fun with alternative, functional training methods such asIndian Clubs and steel maces, mostly because these implements are incredibly effective at training the grip. All aspiring fighters should take note. The stronger the grip, the more likely you are to win a fight, any fight. Raise heavy barbells, and swing big clubs. You’ll be very glad you did.    Whitney is doing exactly what she wants to do, which is awesome. That’s a message that sounds familiar.Travis Mash would be proud. But that said, living a life where you do what you want…what you value…is tough. When Whitney told her friends and family that she’d rather fight than compete in pageants, she received a surprisingly large amount of resistance in return. Her Mom couldn’t stop crying, and she said her Father would hardly speak to her. For them the proper, sensible thing to do would be to get a routine 9 to 5 job, or maybe take advantage of the good looks and land a gig in front of a camera at the local news station. Anything but getting punched in the face, right?    For most that’s enough, but for Whitney being happy and feeling fulfilled means going out and doing the unexpected, painful, scary, awkward thing, the most difficult thing. As she says, “This is where you feel most alive. Far, far outside of your comfort zone.” I guess we can all do a better job of challenging ourselves, eh? Maybe we could stand to be uncomfortable a little more often.   You can check out more from Whitney on YouTube, including an awesome little feature on her transition from pageants to fighting. Also, make sure to follow her on Instagram and Facebook. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Whitney, best of luck with your training. We look forward to seeing you make your debut in the ring soon.    Cheers, Chris Moore
