Why Drilling For Oil in the Alaskan Arctic is So Controversial

Environmental Integrity Project

Last year, environmentalists criticized the Biden Administration's decision to approve the Willow Project, a proposal by ConocoPhillips to produce up to 600 million barrels of oil on the North Slope over 30 years. Not far away, Australian company Santos is planning a similar proposal called the Pikka Project, which would produce about 400 million barrels over 30 years. That project has gotten much less attention than Willow in the Lower 48. Philip Wight, an environmental historian at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, explains the context behind these projects and explains why companies are still drilling in the Alaskan Arctic, even as oil production has boomed in other states. He also details how climate change is affecting the industry and Alaska as a whole, including causing some bizarre issues for the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, which delivers oil from the North Slope to refineries and export terminals.

Elise Joshi, 21, is the executive director at Gen-Z for Change. She first gained widespread attention a few months ago when she interrupted a White House press conference being held by Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. In the viral video, a visibly nervous Joshi asked about the Biden administration's approval of ConocoPhillips' $8 billion Willow Pipeline project in Alaska, despite over 1 million young people requesting President Biden halt the project. The video has been viewed tens of millions of times across news outlets and shows. In this episode, Elise makes the point that the Biden administration has done many wonderful things for climate, including the Inflation Reduction Act. However, she noted that for many young people, Biden's climate record will be defined by Willow. The months-long Stop Willow movement was significantly influential across social media. She pointed out that in Biden's first two years, the Bureau of Land Management approved more oil and gas permits than during Trump's first two years, despite Biden's pledge and executive order to halt federal land drilling. This highlights the need to incentivize renewables and electrification while weaning the economy off fossil fuels. For many, progress on the latter has seemed lacking.Elise and Cody have an insightful conversation about these climate policy dynamics and her work at Gen-Z for Change. It's an exciting discussion that provides perspective on how she believes millions of young people view current climate policies. In this episode, we cover: [03:30]: Elise's personal journey to climate advocacy starting in high school[06:10]: Origins and evolution of Gen-Z for Change during COVID[08:32]: Elise's role growing from member to executive director of Gen-Z for Change[10:04]: Tools and activist techniques used by Gen-Z for Change[13:26]: The viral Stop Willow campaign against Arctic oil drilling[15:20]: Gen-Z for Change's role in amplifying the Stop Willow movement[18:47]: Messaging that resonates most with young people on climate[22:57]: Elise's recounting of the moment she stood up to Biden's Press secretary [26:42]: Critique of Biden climate policy as too focused on carrots vs sticks[31:06]: Hopes for bolder climate platform and Green New Deal in 2024[33:33]: Gen-Z for Change's focus on bottom-up organizing for 2024 elections[34:30]: Distrust of the current system and political candidates among Gen-Z [39:01]: How to support Gen-Z for Change[39:44]: Distinction between 502(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) [41:00]: Open resources created by Elise to educate people on climate issues[42:34]: Parting words on public transit and reducing car dependency Get connected: Elise Joshi X / LinkedInCody Simms X / LinkedInMCJ Podcast / Collective / Instagram*You can also reach us via email at info@mcjcollective.com, where we encourage you to share your feedback on episodes and suggestions for future topics or guests.Episode recorded on Sep 29, 2023 (Published on Oct 30, 2023)

Crude Conversations
EP 138 What happens to Alaska when oil is no longer economically viable for the economy of the state?

Crude Conversations

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 15, 2023 65:12

The premise of this conversation is based on a question that Aaron Leggett — the president of the Native Village of Eklutna and the Senior Curator of Alaska History and Indigenous Culture at the Anchorage Museum — and Cody are curious about: What happens to Alaska when oil is no longer economically viable for the economy of the state? Aaron says that his hope for the future is that people will have a better understanding about the role oil plays in Alaska, that although production is in decline we can take the wealth that's been created with it and invest it into Alaska's education system in order to prepare future generations for the new realities and challenges that await them. Permanent Fund Dividend co-creator and state legislator Cliff Groh says that, for decades, oil has been the primary driver of Alaska's economy and fiscal system. However, oil production has been in decline for about 35 years. In the late 1980s, the state had more than 2 million barrels of oil going through the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System every day. Today, it's well under 500 thousand barrels a day. Right now, many people are betting the economic future of Alaska on finding another Prudhoe Bay oilfield. There's the Pikka Oil Field, the Willow Project, and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, or ANWR. There are arguments for and against each of these projects. Tim Bradner has been writing about Alaska's natural resources since 1966, he's also the co-owner of the Alaska Legislative Digest. He doesn't believe oil in Alaska will ever completely go away because oil fields have a way of producing for decades, but oil will become less and less important to Alaska's economy. Ultimately, he's hopeful for the future, though, that there are other things that will come along to stimulate the economy. Commercial fishing and tourism, for example. He says that if we're smart, we'll use the Permanent Fund to sustain our public services and diversify the economy, meanwhile educating young people and giving them a reason to stick around.

The latest publication from the IPCC, AR6 Synthesis Report: Climate Change 2023, outlines a grim future if we don't decarbonize faster and prevent more unnecessary warming. In recent years, there have been major steps taken to accelerate decarbonization, including last year's Inflation Reduction Act passed in the United States to incentivize green energy investments. But even while carbon-free energy infrastructure continues to get a boost, new fossil fuel infrastructure isn't exactly slowing down either. And with the controversy over the Biden Administration's approval of ConocoPhillips' "massive" Willow oil drilling project on Alaska's North Slope, the question remains: why are fossil fuel projects still getting the green light? To talk about the policy and politics behind fossil fuel expansion in the United States and across the globe, we've got two experts on today's show. Tim Donaghy, a Senior Research Manager for Greenpeace USA, and Danielle Deiseroth, Interim Executive Director at Data for Progress. We discuss the biggest takeaways from the IPCC report, the controversy behind the Willow Project, what voters want to see with energy expansion, and much more.  Subscribe to our Substack newsletter "The Climate Weekly" As always, follow us @climatepod on Twitter and email us at theclimatepod@gmail.com. Und im "get-out": "The Athletic", ein Sportnachrichtenangebot der "New York Times", und die Podcastreihe "How To" vom "The Atlantic". Der Podcast erscheint alle zwei Wochen donnerstags. It's Hump Day! Sam hosts Hannah Story Brown, writer and researcher at The Revolving Door Project, to discuss her recent piece on Biden's approval of The Willow Project. Then, Sam speaks with Michelle Eisen, organizing member of Starbucks Workers United, on her experience organizing Starbucks stores all across the country. First, Sam runs through updates on Biden labeling Bibi Netanyahu persona non grata in the wake of severe authoritarian shifts in Israel, the NY Grand Jury announcing no announcement of charges against Trump this week, Pence to appear before the January 6th Grand Jury, how the Nashville shooter was able to acquire guns, a Credit Suisse whistleblower, the FDA approving Narcan for over-the-counter sale, and Tucker's upcoming testimony in court, before parsing through the highlights from Howard Schultz testimony during this morning's HELP Committee. Hannah Story Brown then walks Sam through the long-term process to pass the Willow Project, with ConocoPhillips, a Texas-based oil company, proposing a drilling project in the arctic wilderness of the Alaskan North Slope that was swiftly approved by the Trump administration, only for Environmental groups to successfully challenge it in court, and force the issue onto Biden's table. Looking at this next phase in Willow's development, Story Brown tackles the minimally updated environmental reviews done by the Biden administration, not only refusing to consider not-drilling as an option, but only cutting the project back by 8%, despite both acute local risks, and the grander global issue of climate change. Wrapping up, Sam and Hannah discuss the role of corporate interest in moving this environmental fiasco along, and dive into the impact of Biden's new Chief of Staff, Jeff Zients. Michelle Eisen then joins, diving into her background as a Starbucks worker, working part-time up until the pandemic shut down her primary trade, and what it was like to see the company's commitment to their workers dwindle further and further, until the public health crisis of COVID-19 became the final straw, with the company asking workers to break the law and put their own safety at risk with little compensation, all while touting record-breaking profits. Next, Eisen and Sam parse through the unionization process with Starbucks Workers United, both as a single workplace and as the first of hundreds to be unionized in the US, and the necessity of maintaining active in the face of militant union-busting, before they wrap up by covering the union's major asks, and why legislation such as the PROAct can help make it happen. And in the Fun Half: Sam basks in the public evisceration of Howard Schultz, as Ed Markey and Bob Casey take him to task while he whines about being labeled a “Billionaire,” despite once not having a billion dollars. Sam responds to Joe Rogan's recent spineless callout, “Matt Taibbi” calls in to discuss the unfair treatment of journalists, and KJ from Wisconsin dives into the upcoming election. Asanti from Jersey talks AI art, Bruce from Florida discusses the heel turns of Glenn Greenwald and Matt Taibbi, and Tim Pool once again forgets to read the article he's citing ahead of time. The congressional hearing where the CEO of TikTok was questioned about the security of the app seemed like a total farce and there are many things that could be said about some of the conflicts of interest of the politicians in that most of them had Meta stock (a direct competitor to TikTok). However, the chair of the hearing said that she thinks the app should be banned in the United States due to safety and security concerns. The recent success of making the Willow Project go viral on TikTok showed a real promise for environmental campaigns to succeed and reach audiences with a specific message. But now, the app may not be around and this will impact creators on the app, including marine science communicators. I am going to talk about what you should do in this situation.   Fill out our listener survey: https://www.speakupforblue.com/survey   Join the audio program - Build Your Marine Science and Conservation Career: https://www.speakupforblue.com/career   Facebook Group: https://bit.ly/3NmYvsI Connect with Speak Up For Blue: Website: https://bit.ly/3fOF3Wf Instagram: https://bit.ly/3rIaJSG Twitter: https://bit.ly/3rHZxpc
