En clôture, un format long signé Linda Perry et Grace Slick : "Knock Me Out". Cicely Balston won the 2023 Music Producer's Guild's Mastering Engineer of the Year Award, and when you hear the music she has mastered—and the smart, easygoing way she discusses it—you understand why. Working out of AIR Studios in London, Balston has applied her talents to the doom-punk band Witch Fever and David Bowie's back catalog, as well as some dynamite-sounding hip-hop reissues for the Vinyl Me, Please record club, including Eric B. & Rakim's Don't Sweat the Technique, Gravediggaz's 6 Feet Deep, and Madlib's Shades of Blue. How did this young British woman become an ace hip-hop masterer, and do those albums require a specific skill set? Are people too fixated on analog vs. digital? How did she become a mastering engineer anyway, and what's the most commonly misunderstood aspect of what she does? (Photo by Silvia Gin.)

We're keeping finals season blues at bay by pumping up the energy on the dancefloors, on the kitchen floors, in the library, your ears, wherever. To be honest, the podcasted version this week is just 30 second clips of me shouting out the CFRC Funding Drive (we gotta stay on air), so it's worth finding the full show in archives (I worked real hard on the transitions between songs, go check it out), but to keep you entertained, I've tried to have good transitions on the podcast too. New treat for you Buddies on this latest 'sode of Vinyl Community Podcasts. On our 100th episode of VCP, we feature a conversation taking us behind the music: specifically, I'm speaking with Cicely Balston of AIR Studios in London. Earlier this year Cicely was awarded the 2023 Music Producer's Guild "Mastering Engineer of The Year" honor - and for good reason! With over a decade in the field, she began to develop her trade back in 2013 at Gearbox Records, an all-analog shop known for cutting on a vintage Skully lathe. She moved on to AIR Studios in 2016, with a detour at Alchemy Mastering (later acquired by AIR) in between her return to Sir George Martin's enterprise in 2020. She's been involved in some terrific releases of late courtesy of Vinyl Me Please, including the exciting recent release of Chalino Sanchez' "15 Exitos 15". She's been part of working on projects from artists like David Bowie, to Young MC, Busta Rhymes, Witch Fever, Sun Ra and a litany of artists across many genres and styles. We touch on that, as well as navigating mastering from digital files and analog both for today's hungry vinyl consumers. As the "vinyl resurgence" continues to go full speed ahead, the mastering side of things is in great hands with Cicely and other mastering engineers taking the baton from their predecessors. This episode has it all: science, music, laughs, and some name dropping (mostly by me). Let's jump into this terrific conversation now on Vinyl Community Podcasts! Concocting a potent sonic assault that recalls the foreboding darkness of Black Sabbath, Savages' monochrome post-punk and the dirty breathlessness of Bleach-era Nirvana, the Manchester quartet create a confrontational racket that takes no prisoners. Refusing to be confined by gender or genre, Witch Fever have always defied expectations as individuals in society. Now, they're defying expectations as a band. The debut album, Congregation is the sound of punk without boundaries of any kind, and with it they are ushering in a new era of heavy music that's accessible, confrontational and, most importantly of all, a huge pressure release. “This is something that could scorch lawns and burn down buildings, this is Witch Fever” – Steve Lamacq, BBC6 Music Witch Fever is Amy, Alex, Alisha & Annabelle.

This conversation was an extra special one for me as I have grown up listening to many of the bands that Julie has been responsible for putting out into the world. For those out there who love their UK Heavy Metal from the late 90s/early 00s you will know of her work via Visible Noise, the indie label she started who discovered bands like Bring me the Horizon and Bullet for My Valentine (and deeper cuts who I love like Number One Son and Kilkus). Now she is the label head of Sony Music's rock and metal label Music For Nations. We spoke about how she started in music, coming from the North of England and making her way in the music business, setting up Visible Noise and the work she is doing with Music for Nations and how things differ now that she is working with a Major (spoiler alert, it's great). She's currently working with some of my favourite acts out there that you should check out. From Global giants Tool (my all time number 1 band) through to newer/lesser known UK acts like Blanket and Witch Fever (who we discuss at length in the episode, they are awesome). I hope you enjoy the chat as much as I did having it. https://www.musicfornations.co.uk/ https://www.instagram.com/mfnofficial/ https://twitter.com/musicfornations https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0f5RbK2kZEvYKzb8x4L22A Get in touch with me via: behindthebusinesspod@gmail.com https://www.dcmusicpublishing.co.uk https://www.instagram.com/dcmusicpublishing https://twitter.com/dannychampion

This pod series goes up to eleven! All-female firebrands Witch Fever and The Brkn Record (the new project from Heliocentrics co-founder Jake Ferguson) bring the intensity to this week's proceedings. Tom talks to Annabelle and Alisha from Witch Fever, a majority-queer band who are all women or non-binary people, about LGBT+ spaces in heavy music, providing the representation in the scene they want to see, and poor behaviour they've been on the end of from straight men.Matt explains why 'Shock Me' by Baroness speaks to him as a bi man, and what it has to do with learning to deal with homophobia. Tom finds his own relevance to him finding his identity, and somehow links it to Monty Python. Sort of.Plus this week's new entries for the Hate Crew Gaybar jukebox are Corrupted Pillars Of Vanity by Ætheria Conscientia, and Dark Triad: Bitter Psalms To A Sordid Species by Epiphanic Truth.
