Say the word wellness and it conjures an instant image in our minds… glowing skin, enviable abs, sludgy looking juice, tasteful muted leisurewear and lots and lots of money. Where we used to have diets and anti-ageing cream, we now have peloton and ashwaghanda gummies and collagen powder. Or we do if we can afford to. So I'm delighted to welcome to The Shift, the award-winning American journalist Amy Larocca, who has written an entire book on the subject, How To Be Well, aptly subtitled ‘finding a way through the self-care epidemic without losing your mind and your money'. I've been a fan of Amy's work for a long time because for 20 years she was the fashion editor of New York magazine and like me is interested in the recent shift from owning the latest it bag to owning the latest it abs. She also wrote a great piece for the New York Times back in 2022 called Welcome to the menopause Gold Rush which I must have shared hundreds of times and will link to in the show notes. Amy joined me to talk about how easy it is to get sucked in by the virtue trap of wellness promise, how suddenly everyone's a frontiers woman, bovine colostrum (yes really), how the industry is sucking in teenage boys and the price of entry to adult womanhood. We also discussed Oprah, HRT, bionic babies biohacking and so much more! * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including How To Be Well by Amy Larocca as well as the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com Learn more about your ad choices. Kaitlin Sidorsky's new book, All Roads Lead to Power: The Appointed and Elected Paths to Public Office for US Women (University Press of Kansas, 2019), is an extremely well written and important analysis of women in public life and public service. This book combines qualitative and quantitative research to examine appointed and elected state positions, particularly in regard to gender, and concludes that there are quite a few women in appointed positions, an area not usually the focus of research and analysis of women and power. Sidorsky notes that women in appointed positions on boards and commissions at the state and local level see themselves not in political positions but instead working in capacities to accomplish goals, serve the public, and continue along their career paths. In the way many of these women conceptualize their work in these positions, this is not necessarily about political ambition, as Sidorsky's research discovers, but because this public work is usually connected to the individual office holder's personal or professional life. This research will be of particular interest to those who study women and politics, political representation, and questions of politics and power. This is an excellent study and analysis, enlightening in both the data compiled and the assessment of the data within our understanding of appointed and elected positions, politics, and power. In a world where women leaders are still facing immense challenges and criticism, our role as advocates for each other has never been more important. Too often, we've seen women tear each other down, rather than lifting each other up. But when we commit to refusing to participate in the toxic dynamics that hold us back and instead use our voices to build other women up, amazing things happen. We're thrilled to share this replay of Julie Castro Abrams discussing the first pillar of our How Women Lead credo. This week's episode 128 of How Women Inspire is about the first tenet of the How Women Lead credo: be fierce advocacy for all women and transforming work culture! In this episode of How Women Inspire Podcast, Julie Castro Abrams shares the importance of lifting up and supporting other women and actionable steps you can take right now to advocate for the women in leadership roles in your life. Some of the talking points Julie goes over in this episode include:The physical toll of microaggressions in the workplace. What leadership is like for women in a world designed for men.The oxymoron of ‘women's leadership” in America and the lack of models for women leaders. How being fierce advocates for one another will help women step into their confidence and power as leaders. It's time we change the culture of how we are together so that all women can feel like they have a path forward and do it with fewer battle scars.Thank you for listening! Hey this Episode 80 of the podcast is one of my favorite energizing episodes of 2022. Lorraine Glassford and I Goddess chat about some things that even well accomplished women are hiding from in terms of: How her "corporate restructure" at the top of her game had her emotionally wounded. Traumas to Triumph How The Modern Day Corporate Medicine Women are evolving out of corporate restructures The self limiting self-doubt and the burden of validation we put on ourselves. The way women hold energy and have the nature to reframe the game. The impact of conversation with experience in the room that supports self efficacy and is outside bias. What is on the horizon. Go catch the whole video on YouTube This is a really energizing episode so much that I am releasing the video along with the audio version over on my YouTube Channel so you can really feel the impact and difference of being in the room with powerful, engaged and open women. This is an important thing women need. We need our own true Masterminds that are not necessarily coaching groups. Mavens, wise older women need spaces more about who is in the room to draw out what is inside one another and connect us to opportunity than the gurus teaching us anything new. We are not lacking a thing at this point. We are optimizing and alchemizing! Come take a listen. Resources: This episode is Sponsored by The Curvy Hustle 30 Day Leadership Jumpstart. How are we going to develop the next generation of female revenue leaders? It's a complicated question because the lack of women in revenue leadership roles today makes it hard to develop leaders for tomorrow. Women are sorely underrepresented in leadership roles. And that's as true of revenue teams as it is elsewhere in many organizations. Women in Sales Everywhere (WISE) developed out of a passion project at CloserIQ with the goal of developing female revenue leaders through mentoring, networking, and professional development opportunities. In this episode of B2B Nation, we're talking to Cassie Yettru, general manager of WISE, about supporting women so they can move into leadership roles on revenue teams, what women value most in career opportunities and the importance of clearly defined development opportunities. WISE's individual membership program allows women in sales or sales-related roles to network with peers, find mentors, and attend exclusive member-only events. WISE is offering 10% off membership to all B2B Nation listeners using the code B2BNATION10 — learn more and apply here. Apply the discount code during checkout. Episode Guide 2:19: Where was Cassie given support and encouragement in her career? 4:00: What are some of the aspects of a job women value compared to men? 5:19: Who is most likely to pursue professional development? And who should? 6:34: Why are younger professionals less likely to explore professional development? 8:45: Where is the market for HR tech, training, and professional development headed? 11:02: What is Cassie's favorite tool?

The maneater, the glamour model, the sexy one. Well, that's the role the producers of Love Island put on Megan Barton-Hanson when she was in the villa in 2018. But as we all know, reality TV is a heavily edited version of what really happens, and Megan and I dive into this and how sudden fame affected her mental health. We talk about how women are still being judged against each other in the media and online, and how this toxic negativity needs to stop. Like, NOW. Megan tells us about her struggles with being bullied and trolled, and how cosmetic surgery can yes, give you bigger boobs and a smaller nose, but it can't fix your confidence. Megan's unapologetically honest about all sorts of issues like mental health, enhancing your looks and sexuality. She tells us “we all need to be more real, to be kinder, and show our vulnerable side.” And I couldn't agree more, Megan. Enjoy listening and until next time, mad, mad amounts of love. You can follow Megan on Instagram @meganbartonhanson and you can follow us @gurlstalk Please send any messages to www.gurlstalk.com And don't forget to subscribe to never miss an episode of the Gurls Talk podcast.
