So far, 3x fatalities and 7x wounded were reported following the shooting, and the assailant took their own life at the scene.Ohio: Following the events in New Jersey over the past few weeks, Wright-Patterson Air Force base reported an airspace closure due to drones inhibiting flight operations. Friday night base officials observed many drones of varying sizes and configurations, which resulted in the issuance of NOTAMs number M1132, M1133, and M1134, which resulted in the complete closure of the airspace for several hours.New Jersey: No clear and indisputable evidence has been noted over the past few days to indicate what the recent “drone” crisis may be. Statements by officials have been mixed. New York claims to have requested “drone detection systems” from the federal government, and that these resources (whatever they are) are being deployed around the tri-state area.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: The implementation of a “drone detection system” in New York is interesting in that framing the response in this manner signals the lack of understanding regarding drone detection and surveillance. The U.S. government doesn't have a magic suitcase of tech that can make everything okay. There's much more to it than that; drone detection and mitigation technology is an extremely wide and varied subject area, with many different means of monitoring aerial objects. From NORAD's extremely capable suite of radar systems, to satellite-based technologies, to the intricate web of counter-drone technologies, down to the individual user level in many cases, there are a plethora of options for detecting what these “drones” might be, and where they originate from. This morning, President Trump alluded to as much, very bluntly stating that the U.S. government knows exactly what the situation is regarding the drones that have genuinely been observed. This matter-of-fact statement points to what is fairly obvious; the chances of the US government not already tracking every piece of technology in the United States, are zero. There is absolutely zero chance that at least two dozen different federal agencies haven't already weeded out the fake/erroneous reports from the genuine sightings, and already identified where these “drones” are coming from.More broadly however, in the realm of national security, sometimes wishing will indeed make it so. Tom Furness has been working on virtual reality technologies since 1966, but most of his early work with the United States Air Force has remained fairly secret (see my previous interviews in episodes # and #). Ivan Sutherland and Mort Heileg are often cited as early VR pioneers, but Furness was also working secretly at Wright Patterson Air Force base on the first helmet-mounted displays, visually-coupled systems, and eventually The Super Cockpit. It wasn't until he was given permission to speak about The Super Cockpit project in the mid-80s that the world got to learn about the advances in VR technologies he'd been working on. I had a chance to catch up with Furness at the AWE 2023 on June 1st, just ahead of Apple's announcement of the Apple Vision Pro that happened a few days later on June 5th. We talk about the Virtual World Society, and the meeting of XR industry CEOs and leaders at AWE to have an off-the-record conversation about the impacts of AI and how to collaborate to help bring about a more exalted future of the XR industry. Furness also shares a bit more context of the early history of VR, as he's has been working continuously within for the past 57-58 years. I think it's really important to look back upon where these immersive and spatial computing technologies have come from in order to get a better idea for where they might be going. Furness also recently won the inaugural member's choice Ethical Values Award from the XR Guild for significant contributions to the XR industry, and continues to lead the Virtual World Society to promote the more pro-social uses of XR technologies.

In September 1964, Captain McLeod and Sergeant Barnes were dispatched from Wright-Patterson Air Force base in Ohio. They were sent to investigate a UFO sighting in Northern California. Wright-Patterson AFB got lots of UFO reports. 99% of them could be explained. And a sizeable percentage of those sightings were hoaxers looking for attention. The other 1% were classified as UFOs and sent on to Project Blue Book. What happened from there, McLeod didn't know. The fact that he was being sent to the other side of the country meant this sighting was important to the Air Force. McLeod had a copy of the teletyped report from the UFO tracking office. It was stamped with an unusual "Priority" notification. It read:  "UFO landing with entities reported by missile technician in Tahoe NF, Sacramento. Orders: Investigate and contain via usual protocols ASAP." McLeod's first step was to interview the witness. And, even after 17 years as an investigator, this was strangest UFO story he'd ever heard.

This week Eric and Marie are joined by PA Mufon State Director and Author John Ventre and Kecksburg Researcher Owen Eichler to discuss Owen's controversial claim that he has solved the Kecksburg Crash that occurred in December 1965. They'll be on to discuss Owen's claim that the vehicle that crashed and was recovered by the military was the MK2 sattelite created by General Electric developed for the U.S. Military to photograph and possibly destroy, enemy satellites in space. John Ventre and Owen Eichler will explore several well-known theories about the 1965 crash including the theories which suggest the object could have been technology recovered under Operation Paperclip (e.g., the Nazi Bell), or possibly the Soviet spacecraft Kosmos 96, or even an actual extraterrestrial vehicle. On December 9, 1965 at 4:47 pm, something navigated through our airspace and made a semi controlled landing in Kecksburg Pennsylvania. The legend has grown to include one witness who saw a scaly, three fingered hand come out of the top of the UFO, similar to the ending of the 1953 movie “War of the Worlds”, to seeing an alien body on a gurney at Hangar 18 at Wright Patterson Air Force base alongside a cone shaped craft. John was contacted in February 2015 by Owen Eichler in regards to his theory that the December 9, 1965 Kecksburg UFO incident was potentially a crash and retrieval of a GE Mark 2 reentry vehicle (RV) launched on December 7, 1965. Owen said he has spent ten years researching his theory and believes he is correct. The GE Mark 2 RV has never been mentioned as a possible candidate for Kecksburg.
