Send us a textIn July of 1991, Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall announced his retirement as a Supreme Court Justice. That would set off the second ugliest fight to date to fill a Supreme Court seat. Only the fight over the nomination of Robert Bork was tougher and Bork lost. Clarence Thomas was a conservative justice, he was young at age 43, and had had a distinguished career as the head of Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and he served on the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, He was a Yale Graduate and he had an undergraduate Degree from Holy Cross. He would also be the second African American to sit on the Supreme Court but he was not a liberal nor a Democrat. That guaranteed him a fight on issues concerning Civil Rights, Affirmative Action, and Abortion rights. Those fights turned out to be only the first round of the Hearings to confirm him. An accusation had been made in some of the FBI reports that had been checking his background and in typical Washington style, it got leaked. That led to round 2 and a long debate about the sordid tale of sexual harassment between the Conferee and a former employee he had at the EEOC, Dr. Anita Hill. Prior to Homecare Hub he was the Site Medical Director for the Department of Medicine at Trillium's Credit Valley Hospital, overseeing 15,000 admissions a year. He is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine where he teaches Leadership, Emotional Intelligence, Innovation, Healthcare Quality and clinical medicine on the hospital wards, and is an investigator at the Institute for Better Health. He previously was co-course director for MIT's Global Health Informatics course where co-edited one of the first comprehensive Global Health Technology books.   Vipan has led and founded various organizations and groups, such as the non-profit uFLOW (now LYFE), which empowers underserved youth to start their own health service projects, which he expanded to Chicago, Cleveland, New York City, Boston, and San Francisco. He is a former software developer at IBM, and also led projects at Sun Microsystems, Citibank, UCLA, WHO in Geneva, UNICEF in India, the Ontario Ministry of Health, and Lux Capital in NYC.   He is an advisor at the Health Education Project in Haiti and has worked clinically in Haiti, Peru, Ghana, Nepal, and India. He has served as an advisor and mentor at the Creative Destruction Lab, the Center for Social Innovation's Agents of Change program, Blueprint Health in NYC, and the Harvard Innovation Lab. He has authored chapters on e-Health, medical devices, and genomics, and given talks on healthcare technology, innovation, global health, and leadership across the globe.   Vipan completed his internal medicine residency training from Cleveland Clinic's main campus, MD degree at the University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC), MBA at the Yale School of Management, and his BSc in computer science and software engineering at the University of Western Ontario. At Yale he led the student body as the President of the Yale Graduate and Professional Student Senate and as a resident he was selected as the sole recipient among all Cleveland Clinic residents for the Michener Leadership Award for leadership and dedication to community service and humanity.       Say the name Wilbur Cross and most Connecticans think of a parkway. Wilbur Cross the man, however, was a Connectican of extraordinary accomplishment. Born in 1862 in the factory village of Gurleyville, he became a world-class scholar, author, educational reformer, founding Dean of the Yale Graduate school, and, starting at age 68, a popular four-term governor who guided Connecticut through the worst years of the Great Depression.  In this episode, state historian Walt Woodward sits down at the New Haven Museum with poet and publisher David Wilk, whose City Point Press recently reissued Cross's 1943 autobiography Connecticut Yankee: An Autobiography of Wilbur L. Cross, to discuss Cross's remarkable nineteenth and twentieth century life.  As a bonus, we include a reading by David Wilk of Wilbur Cross's 1936 Thanksgiving Proclamation, regarded then and now for its eloquent invitation to thankful reflection.

You're from Jersey, how does Jersey differ from Oregon?After living in Oregon for nearly 11 years, what strikes me most when I go back to visit my parents in NJ is how crowded it is! So many people - so little space! I also notice how much more friendly everyone is in Oregon. You also went to Yale. What was that like?I went to Yale for Grad School and did a Joint Degree (MBA from School of Management and Master of Environmental Management from School of Forestry and Environmental Studies). It was a bit of a "dual life" as the cultures are so different at the two schools - but was great for me, since both of those aspects (the analytical, geeky MBA and also the crunchy, outdoors lover) are part of who I am! What is your big why?I think I put this in the application - but I have a BHAG (big hairy ass goal) of helping 1000 business owners grow the business of their dreams so they can each in turn help 1000 ideal clients with their area of expertise, in turn, improving their lives! That would mean that I had at least a partial impact on improving the lives of 1,000,000 people and their families!What is the biggest struggle you notice with marketing when it comes to small businesses?Many small business owners are AMAZING at their thing - their zone of genius - their area of expertise - but often than THING isn't marketing. It's hard to be thinking about marketing your business and working ON your business when you're so into the day to day of working IN your business. What is one of the best ways to grow a relationship with your audience?Listen to them! After 20 years in corporate marketing, I've spent countless hours behind one way mirrors in focus groups listening to consumers - why? Because the big brands know that's where the gold is - in the voice of their customers. It's essential to really take the time to listen and understand the people we hope to serve with our businesses when we're creating content, messaging, products and offers! A Writer with a Doctorate in Art History, Matt Abrams shares his epic story of early drug use, which led to dropping out of high school,  running away from home, drug smuggling and dealing. After many of his junkie friends landed themselves in jail or dead, Matt found the strength in the recovery community to get sober by the age of 19. Determined to change his way of being, he found education to be a wonderful avenue to new meaning and opportunity. Getting his PhD at Yale served to be a place of growth and awakening in many ways, as he came to understand his dual identity as an Ivy League student and OxyContin addict. Matt's ability to  empathize with the “junkie world” on the outskirts of Yale was profound, as he grappled with the fact that while OxyContin almost killed him, its makers were largely responsible for funding the University that brought him so much life.
