It's August 31st 8023 – six thousand years in the future – and you are in a mountain in Nevada. It has taken you several days to get here. You've had to hike, you've had to endure the harsh heat – the thorns – and you've stumbled upon a set of metal doors. This is what you've been looking for. The doors are a kind of crude airlock, keeping out dust and animals. You head into the darkness of a long tunnel. There's the mildest hint of light ahead that you slowly find your way to. You look up. A faint light filtering down now through giant gears, illuminating the beginning of a spiral staircase. You start climbing. It winds up the outer rim of the tunnel, rising towards the gears and faint light overhead. The stairs are carved out of the rock. After climbing about 100 feet you encounter a large bronze egg filled with concrete. It's about the size of a small car and weighs 5,000 kilograms. After you pass the weights you keep climbing, pass more giant gears, some over 8 feet in diameter – and then you find it. The world's slowest computer. And it plays a chime for you. Simple bells, but a unique combination nobody in living memory has ever heard, nor will ever hear again. This is a clock. I started just thinking about, just as a project for myself, the idea of building a very slow clock that would last for 10,000 years. Sometime in the 1990s, I started noticing the year 2000 was kind of a mental barrier for people. It was hard for them to think past it. And so I started just thinking about, just as a project for myself, the idea of building a very slow clock. And 10,000 years being a kind of nice number because our history is kind of 10,000 years old. So we ought to have a future that's as big as our history. It's not a work of science fiction. It's real. Danny wanted to design a symbol of the future in the same way the Pyramids of Giza are a symbol of the past. If you go to the pyramids in Egypt and you touch those stones, I mean those are stones that human hands touched thousands of years ago. Is there anything we can put into the world where you would be touching this thing and this thing would endure and you would know that people in the year 7000 or something might also touch that same thing and think about you and does that build some kind of a connection across time? The 10,000 Year Clock, or the Clock of the Long Now, is the work of the Long Now Foundation. The Long Now Foundation is a nonprofit here in San Francisco that's trying to help people think about the next 10,000 years. And the way we want to do that is by also helping them think about the last 10,000 years. When we're thinking about the future, there's so many organisations or cultural narratives that want to convince people or talk about how we're at the end of the civilisational narrative. That's the idea is that you're really looking out at a multi-thousand year time horizon. You're thinking about how the decisions that you're making today affect people in 400 human generations. You're going to do things a little bit differently. And that might actually be really important. This clock really encapsulates everything that I love. It's oddly obsessive about something that's impossible to predict. It's incredibly philosophical and I think it's really important. It's all about fostering long-term thinking. It's all about projecting further into the future than the financial year or your five-year plan or dare I say it – you. It's all about hope and about the possibility that that there might be a future and that's so refreshing in a world where we're constantly told that the clock is ticking…

Enjoy this rewind from July 2020! This week on the podcast, we catch up two incredible engineers—Chomp captain Zoe Stephenson and teammate Jascha Little! Zoe and Jascha are a wife-and-husband team who work together as engineers on experimental projects at Applied Invention. Their most visible project, perhaps, is The Long Now Foundation's 10,000 Year Clock, a massive mechanical timekeeper that is designed to survive and tell time until the year 12,000. (Some fans may know that Bronco team captain Zander Rose is the director of The Long Now Foundation).   It's unbelievably difficult to design an object to survive for 10,000 years—metals corrode, moving parts seize up, materials that touch one another run the risk of chemically reacting to one another in strange ways. For inspiration, the team looked to the past and the designs of other mechanical objects, early timepieces and mechanical computers. It's a fascinating project, and one that we will most certainly continue to talk about on the show.   BattleBots fans know Zoe and Jascha for Chomp, the AI-infused hammerbot that ended Paul Ventimiglia's championship run in 2016. This year, Chomp is back—as a superheavyweight walker bot with a turret-mounted hammer. Zoe and Jascha talk at length about the design, and the technical challenges they face as they try to cut weight from the bot.   We really enjoyed this interview, and we hope you do, too.

On this episode of Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different, our guest Alexander Rose asked me a question that stopped me in my tracks. We go deep into that question, and a myriad of other topics in today's dialogue. Alexander Rose is the executive director of the Long Now Foundation. And their mission is to foster long-time, long-term thinking. And they're probably most known for the building of this massive 10,000-year clock with the support of Jeff Bezos. If you are anyone who cares about products, if you're an engineer, a product leader, or frankly, anyone else who cares about creating products, or a different future, you're going to love this conversation. Alexander Rose on The Long Now Foundation The conversation starts off with Alexander describing the purpose of The Long Now Foundation and The Long Now Idea itself. It was started by a set of both technologist and artists, who are part of the earlier generation of Silicon Valley. “It was a group of people that were realizing that by the kind of fetishization of speed that was happening, especially around Silicon Valley, in technology, circles, that we were taking a lot of things off the table. So things like climate change, if you were only given a few years to solve something like that, you basically won't even start. But if you are willing to think about something, at least in terms of centuries or generations, you could imagine how you might solve these large challenges that humanity is now facing.” – Alexander Rose Brian Eno, one of the founders of the Long Now Foundation, coined the term, and he really stretched it out to the 10,000 years we've had, to the 10,000 years in the future, making it a 20,000-year story. Humanity 10,000 Years into the Future The focus then shifts into the story of what will happen 10,000 years into the future. For Alexander, he believes that humanity will still be there, but it depends on what we do today if they are thriving or struggling by then. “I very much believe that humanity is going to be around for the next 10,000 years. The question is, are we making decisions that are going to help those future generations right now? As Jonas Salk originally asked: Are we being good ancestors, or are we being bad ancestors? And how can we be better ones?” – Alexander Rose Alexander then proceeds to discuss our ongoing report card on the matter. Alexander Rose on Thinking of the "Good Old Days" Talking about the past, particularly the notion of the good old days, Alexander firmly thinks that we definitely have it better today than in the distant past. It is just that, we are used to modern comforts and the ever-growing technology at the palm of our hands, that we take those things for granted and focus on the bad things todays and reminisce on the good memories from the past. Alexander describes it like a pendulum swinging back and forth. While there are swings on both directions, the momentum for the forward / positive swing is oftentimes bigger than the backwards or negative one.  Though granted in today's climate, it's hard to see the positives than the negatives. While the past would be nice to visit, a person from this time would find it a horrendous place to live in, minus the comforts that they have been accustomed to. Emma and Gil chat with Sam Rosenthal and Stephen Bell of The Game Band, known for their bizarre cosmic horror sports sim Blaseball. We discuss the unique feedback loop between Blaseballs fans and its creators, the benefits of apophenia, and how baseball was uniquely suited for this treatment at this moment in history. SHOW NOTES 7m00s: The score bug that Gil is referring to is the graphic that appears overlaid on most sports broadcast, showing the game's score and other vital stats. Gil also refers to external chest protectors that baseball umpires used to wear, an icon of baseball from decades past. 7m59s: The Blaseball wiki. 10m00s: The music that Stephen refers to is literal fan-made music. Fan canon says that the team the Seattle Garages are actually a rock band forced to play Blaseball. Fans have actually recorded and released these albums. 19m05s: Here's Cat Manning's excellent Blaseball primer. It's a good way to get a sense of the lore of the game. 22m11s: We chatted with game designer and wide receiver Adrienne Smith in Ludology 240 - Are You Receiving Me? 26m15s: Apophenia is the tendency to make connections between disconnected things. Game designers can use it to make meaningful experiences and memorable stories, but other people can use it for very bad things. 27m42s: Kayfabe is a wrestling term that denotes the acceptance of the fictionalization of staged events. In other words, a wrestling announcer working in kayfabe will treat a match as if it is a genuinely-contested sporting event with an uncertain outcome, not a scripted match in which all participants know the winner ahead of time. Kayfabe is very much another example of a magic circle. You can hear Geoff Engelstein and Ryan Sturm discuss the magic circle with game designer Eric Zimmerman in Ludology 79 - The Magic Circle. 29m34s: SIBR is the Society for Internet Blaseball Research. Their name is a reference to SABR, the Society for American Baseball Research. (In real-world Major League Baseball, SABR is the organization that devised "sabermetrics," the advanced statistics that powered the Moneyball movement.) SIBR has written several academic papers analyzing the effects various aspects of Blaseball. 32m54s: Taskmaster continues to be one of Gil's favorite shows. 35m44s: Uncharted is a series of video games about uncovering historical mysteries around the world, and killing a lot of bad guys in the process. 44m02s: More info on Twitch Plays Pokémon. Also, Our Place, a MUD. 48m17s: More info on the John Cage composition As Slow As Possible (Gil misstated the title as "As Long As Possible"). You can watch a video of one of the note changes here. Also, Gil should have mentioned the 10,000 Year Clock, a clock that is being built within a Texas mountain of Texas (funded by Jeff Bezos) that will be designed to run 10,000 years without any human intervention. This is not the kind of scale humans are used to thinking in, which is what makes these projects so strange and intriguing. 53m04s: Welcome to Night Vale is highly recommended for anyone intrigued by the idea of comic cosmic horror. For example... "The City Council announces the opening of a new dog park at the corner of Earl and Sommerset near the Ralph’s. They would like to remind everyone that dogs are not allowed in the dog park. People are not allowed in the dog park. It is possible you will see hooded figures in the dog park. Do not approach them. Do not approach the dog park. The fence is electrified and highly dangerous. Try not to look at the dog park, and especially do not look for any period of time at the hooded figures. The dog park will not harm you." 55m51s: Baseball has several "unwritten rules" of decorum. One of them is that bunting to break up a no-hitter tends to be frowned upon. It happens every few years; in 2019, a minor-league team broke up a combined no-hitter in the 9th inning with a bunt, which resulted in a benches-clearing altercation.  1h00m42s: Here is the Blaseball Discord server. 1h05m40s: Gil is referring to Marcel Duchamp's readymade sculpture Fountain (although there are rumblings that the piece was actually made by Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven). Afterwards, Gil refers to the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Chain of Command, in which a Cardassian tortures Jean-Luc Picard by inflicting pain if Picard does not claim he sees five lights when in fact there are only four in front of him (which itself is a reference from a scene in 1984). 1h06m57s: "The Commissioner Is Doing A Great Job" is a common Blaseball meme. The Coffee Cup was the most recent season of Blaseball before this recording, which was a knockout tournament of nontraditional Blaseball teams instead of a "traditional" season (whatever that means). 1h08m03s: Twitter links: The Game Band, Blaseball, Sam Rosenthal, and Stephen Bell. Here is Blaseball's Patreon. 1h10m16s: Guess which blaseball team Gil follows?

(Some fans may know that Bronco team captain Zander Rose is the director of The Long Now Foundation). It’s unbelievably difficult to design an object to survive for 10,000 years—metals corrode, moving parts seize up, materials that touch one another run the risk of chemically reacting to one another in strange ways. For inspiration, the team looked to the past and the designs of other mechanical objects, early timepieces and mechanical computers. It’s a fascinating project, and one that we will most certainly continue to talk about on the show. BattleBots fans know Zoe and Jascha for Chomp, the AI-infused hammerbot that ended Paul Ventimiglia’s championship run in 2016. This year, Chomp is back—as a superheavyweight walker bot with a turret-mounted hammer. Zoe and Jascha talk at length about the design, and the technical challenges they face as they try to cut weight from the bot. We really enjoyed this interview, and we hope you do, too. Link to Chomp’s GitHub repository: https://github.com/contradict/stomp  Follow us on Facebook: facebook.com/behindthebotsRate and review us on Apple PodcastsTell a friend about the show; we really appreciate your support!

This week we will hear stories of people who displayed true bravery! We will read a poem about bravery to apply to our lives. We begin with our Months of the Year Song, encourage a Months of the Year Clock craft, then dive into the numbers 12 and 16, both multiples of 4. We'll hear the "ai" chunk in use and learn new map skills (lines of latitude) to try to locate our mystery country. You will need:1. Math manipulatives (objects to count, from 1-16)2. Math notebook and pen/pencil to write numbers 1-16 (for those who write)Suggested: Display numbers 1-16 so that students can copy themSuggested: sand, shaving cream, rice, or other appropriate filler for a sensory box for younger children to draw numbers or at least the circle shape3. Globe or map with lines of latitude. It should show the Equator and Tropic of Cancer lines. 4. View Instagram (Brilliant Mornings) to see the craft - available after 12 PM. See It ThroughBy: Edgar Guest (1881-1959)When you're up against a trouble, Meet it squarely, face to face; Lift your chin and set your shoulders, Plant your feet and take a brace. When it's vain to try to dodge it, Do the best that you can do; You may fail, but you may conquer, See it through! Black may be the clouds about you And your future may seem grim, But don't let your nerve desert you; Keep yourself in fighting trim. If the worst is bound to happen, Spite of all that you can do, Running from it will not save you, See it through! Even hope may seem but futile, When with troubles you're beset, But remember you are facing Just what other men have met. You may fail, but fall still fighting; Don't give up, whate'er you do; Eyes front, head high to the finish. See it through!https://poets.org/poem/see-it-through

This clock will have a hand that ticks once per year, a hand that ticks once per century and best yet, a cuckoo will emerge once a millenium. The idea is to get people thinking about time differently, much the same as how viewing photos of the Earth from space changed thinking about the environment. Arthur Ganson uses humble materials to create kinetic sculptures of humor, drama, and emotion.  His work has been shown around the world, and has been an ongoing inspiration for the 10,000 Year Clock project at Long Now.  His machinated gestures play with time spans that range from the epochal to the momentary. One of the touchstone pieces for the Clock project is the Machine with Concrete.  The input of the piece is a 200 revolution per minute motor, and after series of gear reductions it's output gear is cast in concrete.  Due to the multiplicative nature of the gear train it will take upwards of two trillion years to break the final gear.  Ganson will be discussing the theme of time in his work, and will be bringing a piece to show live at the event.
