Special Guest: Dr. Sue Cornbluth This podcast provides tips, scripts, stories and steps to help parents and educators understand the unique challenges of children who feel different, cast aside or devalued because of experiences in their childhood. Sue Cornbluth talks about children who were in the foster care system or who were adopted and how many of these children can have challenged self esteem due to unanswered questions about their identity or internalized frustrations about their life circumstances. How can we help kids who are being fostered or who have been adopted (perhaps later in life), cultivate the high self esteem and self worth they deserve? The post How to Build Self Esteem in Kids who were Adopted or Fostered with Dr. Sue Cornbluth – Rerelease appeared first on Dr Robyn Silverman.
Episode Summary What's the difference between self-esteem and confidence, and why does it matter in leadership? These two qualities are often used interchangeably, but they have distinct meanings that shape how we lead, communicate, and navigate challenges. Understanding the difference is key to unlocking your full potential. In this episode of Reflect Forward, I break down the critical distinction between self-esteem and confidence and explain why having one without the other can hold you back. The Core Difference • Self-esteem is your internal sense of self-worth, independent of success or failure. • Confidence is your belief in your ability to perform specific tasks or achieve goals. • You can be confident in your skills but have low self-esteem, leading to self-sabotage. • You can have strong self-esteem but lack confidence in certain areas, making you hesitant to act. Why This Matters for Leaders As a leader, your team looks to you for stability, decision-making, and vision. If you lack self-esteem, you may: • Struggle to take feedback constructively. • Seek validation from others instead of trusting yourself. • Hesitate to take necessary risks for growth. On the other hand, if you lack confidence, you might: • Second-guess your decisions, creating uncertainty in your team. • Hold back from opportunities because you fear failure. • Avoid stepping into leadership moments that require courage. What You'll Learn in This Episode • How self-esteem and confidence impact leadership and decision-making. • The difference between high-achieving leaders with low self-esteem vs. those with high confidence. • Why resilient leaders must cultivate both to inspire trust and create impact. • How to recognize when one is lacking and take actionable steps to strengthen it. 10 Actionable Ways to Build Self-Esteem and Confidence 1. Practice self-compassion and silence negative self-talk. 2. Cultivate a growth mindset and learn from failure. 3. Build self-awareness and seek feedback. 4. Journal daily to track progress and reframe challenges. 5. Align your actions with your core values. 6. Take small, actionable steps to build confidence over time. 7. Prepare and practice to gain competence in new areas. 8. Use visualization techniques to strengthen your mindset. 9. Improve body language and posture to reinforce confidence. 10. Surround yourself with people who uplift and challenge you. Self-esteem and confidence don't develop overnight, but you can build both with consistent effort and become a more grounded, resilient leader.Listen now to start strengthening both your inner belief and outer presence so you can lead with clarity, resilience, and authenticity. In this week's episode of Agony Aunties, a new therapist asks how she can help her clients develop more self-esteem. And while the three of us practice differently with our clients, what we all agree on is the importance of exploring the client's relationship with their self-esteem. Where does that struggle with come from? Adding some context to the moments of struggles with self-esteem, especially through practices of mindfulness and journaling, can be helpful for us to notice when our esteem is suffering, and - moreso - when these challenging thoughts arise, we can also choose to not overly identify with them. We'll talk about this and more in this week's episode. I hope you find it helpful. If you have any questions you'd like us to answer, please do send them over, as we love taking on your suggestions and seeing what the three of us come up with. “Devotional service is very simple, and anyone can adopt it. Let one remain what he is; he need only install the Deity of the Supreme Lord in his house. The Deity may be Radha-Krishna or Lakshmi-Narayana (there are many other forms of the Lord). In this way a brahmana, kshatriya, vaishya or shudra can worship the Deity with the results of his honest labor.” (Shrila Prabhupada, Shrimad Bhagavatam, 4.20.9 Purport)

From our very first step, our parents cheered us on celebrating our wins to help us feel proud and successful. As a parent, I was taught it was good to build my children's self-esteem. I thought it was helping them grow and believe in themselves but what happens when they don't succeed because failure is a part of life? What happens then? Teaching ourselves and our children to practice self-compassion creates longer-lasting results for resiliency, peace and joy. Learn the 5 differences between growing your self-esteem muscle versus your self-compassion muscle and why self-compassion comes out as the winner. I love this quote by Kristin Neff, Ph. D. “The motivation of self-compassion arises from love, while the motivation of self-criticism arises from fear. Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week, continuing our theme of coping with holiday and family stress, host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C, revisits a recent Therapy Chat episode with frequent guest Dr. Sharon Martin, LCSW. Last week Sharon shared strategies to help us feel empowered when interacting with family and during the holidays in general. This week she will teach us why expressing our wants and needs, and naming our boundaries can help us feel in control of our lives as the grown @$$ adults that we are. We can't control everything but do have autonomy and choice as adults. With mindful intention, it is possible to thrive, even during stressful times. It's common to feel disempowered when we grew up in homes without our emotional needs being met consistently enough. However, as an adult, you have more power than you may be giving yourself credit for. No one can actually take that away from you. By focusing on what is within your control and letting go of what isn't, you can take your power back during the holidays. As we move into the New Year, learning to express your wants and needs and name and hold your boundaries is something that you can learn. Sharon's recommendations shared in this episode can help. Sharon will give some great tips on why it can be hard to set boundaries, why they're important, and how to do it. Dr. Sharon Martin, LCSW is a licensed psychotherapist specializing in codependency recovery with an online practice serving California residents. For the past 20 years, she's been helping perfectionists and people-pleasers overcome self-doubt and shame, embrace their imperfections, learn to set boundaries, and reclaim their self-worth. Sharon writes the blog Conquering Codependency for Psychology Today and is the author of The CBT Workbook for Perfectionism and The Better Boundaries Workbook. Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C, revisits a classic Therapy Chat episode with frequent guest Dr. Sharon Martin, LCSW. After the November holidays, as we move into the winter holiday season, we may find ourselves feeling a sense of dread, unease, anxiety, or other feelings that are hard to name. We might find ourselves fantasizing about making the holiday "perfect" and "magical" either for ourselves or our family. Sharon explains that sometimes we are unaware of aspects of our family of origin's communication patterns and boundaries that don't really work for us. She describes some of the dysfunctional dynamics that can be common in households where there was abuse and emotional neglect. If your family of origin relationships are continuously disappointing you, maybe this episode will help you feel less alone. Tune in next week as we continue our series with Sharon Martin. Next week she'll talk about strategies to get through the holidays when your family relationships are strained or stressful. Then the last episode of December will be about setting boundaries. Sometimes we don't realize how badly we need to set boundaries with our families until we are reflecting on why we feel so stressed after the holidays end. Sharon will give some great tips on why it can be hard to set boundaries, why they're important, and how to do it. #999: Self-esteem is generally defined as your overall opinion of yourself and your abilities, or lack thereof. In this episode I'm back with actor Josh Peck to walk and talk through his personal Values, Motives, and Habits. Twice in the show he speaks of building self-esteem by doing esteemable acts. It struck me that we often encourage people to just think better of themselves, when they often don't because they aren't proud of who they are and what they do. So here Josh is saying, go be the person you would approve of. Can you imagine if someone said, “I'd like to think of myself as a runner,” but they didn't ever run? I think you'll enjoy Josh's introspective and lessons learned. You can find Josh Peck's book, Happy People Are Annoying, everywhere, and find him on Instagram along with his 13.3 million followers.
