As a little girl, Pamela Des Barres fell in love with rock 'n' roll. While in high school, her friend introduced her to the psychedelic pioneer Captain Beefheart. At eighteen years old, she packed her bags for Hollywood. She spent the rest of the 1960s in rock's cradle of civilization, meeting, befriending, or dating all of her musical heroes—The Byrds, the Doors, Buffalo Springfield, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and countless others. Once Frank Zappa got to know Pamela and her girlfriends, he helped hone them into a performance art and music troupe he called the GTOs. Throughout her time opening for The Mothers of Invention with the GTOs, doing handstands in Jim Morrison's living room, sitting in at protests, accompanying Mick Jagger to Altamont, and nannying for the Zappas, Pamela kept detailed diaries, resulting in her best-selling memoir, I'm With the Band: Confessions of a Groupie, and several subsequent tell-all publications. Today, Pamela is a respected author, journalist, creative writing instructor, podcaster, and rock historian and has earned the distinction of being recognized as the world's most famous Groupie and she joins Vivian to tell us all about it.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

From Moon Unit Zappa, the daughter of musical visionary Frank Zappa, comes a memoir of growing up in her unconventional household in 1970s Los Angeles, coming of age in the Hollywood Hills in the 1980s as the "Valley Girl," gaining momentum as an accidental VJ on a new network called MTV, and finding herself after losing her father, then her mother, and the testing of her most important relationships. How can you navigate life as the "normal" child of an extraordinary creative? What is it like to live in a hothouse of individuality that on one hand fosters freedom of expression, and on the other tamps down the basic desires of a child for boundaries and affection? Should you call your parents Frank and Gail from birth? For Moon Unit Zappa, processing a life so punctuated by the whims of genius, the tastes of popular culture, the calculus of celebrity, and the nature of love, was at times eviscerating, at times illuminating-but mostly deeply confusing. Yes, this is a book about growing up in the shadow of Frank Zappa. Moon and her family were a source of constant curiosity, for their unique names and for their father's reputation as a musical savant and fierce protector of the First Amendment, even though he was never a commercial success. Searching for her own path, first as her father's inadvertent musical collaborator and public sidekick with their surprise mega radio hit, then as an actress, an artist, a spiritual person, a wife and mother, Moon Unit calculates ever-changing equations of fame, family, death and ultimately legacy when dealt the shocking news that Gail's will established an unequal distribution among the remaining, tight-knit Zappas, catalyzing a quest for meaning and redemption. With love, humor, and humility, Earth to Moon reminds us that every family is faced with problems that are unique to their particular makeup, but the journey to growing into yourself with grace is as universal as it gets. Då uppfann gruppen The Mothers of Invention. Freak Out! bröt vaneseendet. Den var provokativ och nyskapande. Och rolig.En Klassiker av Mia Gerdin och Peter Öberg från 2016.

Book Vs. Movie: Valley GirlsThe Frank & Moon Zappa Song Vs. the 1983 Classic FilmWe know that Frank Zappa did not authorize using the song Valley Girl (co-written with his 14-year-old daughter Moon Unit in 1982.) But we had to cover this movie because if there was ever a song that influenced the culture of the early 80s --this was it.Moon Zappa is the oldest child of the late Frank Zappa, and after spending most of her childhood waiting for her dad to make time for her, she reached out to him with his favorite love language--snarky lyrics. Using expressions from her peers in the San Fernando Valley--the Zappas created a song that lampoons the white bread, snotty culture of “Vals.” The fact it became a hit song (and Frank's only Top 40 single) shocked everyone involved. The producers of the 1983 film tried to get Frank to sign the rights but only with the overall approval of the script and music. The film, directed by Martha Coolidge and starring Nicolas Cage and Deborah Foreman, became a classic teen film that must have stung Frank, who sued the producers as Valley 9000 and lost. So what are the main differences between the song and the film? Which version did the Margos like better? Have a listen and find out! This episode is sponsored by Baker Publishing Group, With Every Memory by author Janine Rosche:"At its heart, With Every Memory is the story of what happens when an already-broken family loses the one person holding them together. Lori Mendenhall returns home to a family she barely recognizes after the same car accident that killed her son stole the last eight years of memories from her. Lori's once-loving husband is a stoic workaholic with questionable intentions, and her teenage daughter has been chewed up and spit out by the world following the loss of her twin brother. As Lori's good and bad memories resurface, she must decide whether the family she's returned to is beyond hope. This week we are very happy to welcome independent perfumer Marissa Zappas to the show to talk about her craft, how someone even gets into the perfume industry, breaking off on your own in a niche field, and the role scent plays in our lives. The discussion takes us on a journey through Parisian history, contemplations of death and decay, and how we think Saddam Hussein might have smelled. Prevent Falls was a post-hardcore band from NJ that existed from 1998-2003. Their members included Jeff, Nash, PJ, and Nick. PJ and Nash later went on to join Ben Jorgenson (episode 46) in Armor for Sleep. Here’s an old write up from Lambgoat.com - Equalvision cites similarities between the band and such groups as Helmet and Quicksand, with an indie punk twist. The band has been in existence since 1998 and have previously self-released a full-length entitled 'Solutions Have Problems'. Their EVR debut is slated for release in March of 2002. Look for the band on the road this fall playing numerous weekend shows on the East Coast, and eventually on tour next summer to support the album. Yes, this is an old review. I got Nick on the Skype and this is what we chat about: Salvation Army T-shirts What it was like being the “Young Band” Making their own merch Finding his bass sound getting on Equal Vision Records Playing shows with Coheed Touring with Underoath And a ton more Go give their Instagram a follow. This is the last episode of 2020 and I’d like to thank all of the listeners for your support this year. Because of you the podcast broke 100K downloads and has been gaining a continuous fan base. And I love you for this. I hope to keep bringing interviews that you love in 2021 when we are all vaccinated and hugging once again. Abstraction as Resistance — Reclaiming Identity Through Strategies of Refusal — The Labor of Performance — Relating Audience and Performer — The Politics of Rest — Saying NoNikita Gale is an L.A.-based multi-media artist working in sound, sculpture, and video. In 2018, Gale made a solo show about changing her name—a form of reclaiming her own identity away from a patriarchal lineage. This refusal in many ways sets the stage for Gale's multi-disciplinary practice, as she explores what it means to insist on self-autonomy and abstraction as a method for refusal—a means of presenting her subject matter to the viewer on her own terms. In our hour-long conversation Gale and Zappas talk about how ideas of chosen identity, abstraction, refusal and rest can act as powerful mechanisms in artwork, as well as in protest and dissent. In 2018, Gale made a solo show about changing her name—a form of reclaiming of her own identity away from a patriarchal lineage. This refusal in many ways sets the stage for Gale's multi-disciplinary practice, as she explores what it means to insist on self-autonomy and abstraction—a means of presenting her subject matter to the viewer on her own terms. We talk through the relationships between audience and performer, and how those play out in recent works by Gale: "Audiencing" and "Private Dancer."Host: Lindsay Preston Zappas
Learning within Institutions — Building Spaces for Community — Redefining Centers, Structures, and Bureaucracies — Connectivity within Digital Adaptations — Radical Everyday Practice — Living, Breathing ValuesSarah Williams is the co-founder and Executive Director of the Women's Center for Creative Work (WCCW). In this episode, Zappas & Williams discuss the seeds in Williams' trajectory that grew into WCCW, a space that nourishes and adapts to the needs of its creative feminist communities. As they speak on a range of topics, from day-to-day practices to the larger workings of power and resistance, Zappas and Williams muse on what it means for an organization to be attentive, nimble, and ultimately radical within artistic and social ecosystems. How can strategies of collectivity and horizontality be implemented to create a more liberatory and inclusive pathway forward?Even before the pandemic began in March, WCCW was in a transition — having outgrown its space, they were considering moving to a larger building. The pandemic halted those plans, and also provided a slew of other puzzles to work through. Zappas and Williams discuss how space-making can happen in the digital sphere, and how the digital offers the potential for new connections. Hosted by Lindsay Preston Zappas

Då uppfann gruppen the Mothers of Invention. Freak Out! bröt vaneseendet. Den var provokativ och nyskapande. Och rolig.Mia Gerdin och Peter Öbergmia.gerdin@sr.sepeter.oberg@sr.se
