Exploration. The search for the unknown has shaped the history of our species, molding our behavior in ways we are only beginning to understand. And that understanding is about to come into focus for us today, thanks to today's guest, best-selling author and one of my favorite writers, Dr. Alex Hutchinson. Alex is well known, both for his popular Outside Magazine columns on the topic of sweat science, and his exceptional book Endure: Mind, Body and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance. His book influenced the direction I took with my own PhD work. He first joined us waaaay back in 2019 – one of our first 20 episodes ever recorded – which now number over 350. He brings a fascinating background as an elite runner, a PhD in Physics and is basically who I want to be when I grow up – except he's a decade younger than me.You're going to love this discussion. SO many insights covering our draw toward exploration and what it means for high performance and life. I got a chance to read an early release of his new book: The Explorer's Gene – and it is outstanding. I've underlined and scribbled all over it, which is a good sign. We'll have a link to it in the show notes. You can find his new book, along with other valuable resources on his website at AlexHutchinson.netInfo re earning your health & wellness coaching certification, annual Rocky Mountain Coaching Retreat & Symposium & more via https://www.catalystcoachinginstitute.com/ Best-in-class coaching for Employers, EAPs & wellness providers https://catalystcoaching360.com/ Tap into the home of the (freely available) Not Done Yet! articles on unlocking life's 2nd half here. The great Yogi Berra was famous for saying “Baseball is 90% mental. The other half is physical.” While that brings a smile to our face, he may have been onto something… something that applies to each of us across the spectrum of pursuits. We look to bring the very best version of ourselves as we step up to the plate each day across various personal, professional and athletic pursuits. And today's guest, best-selling author, elite athlete and coach Steve Magness will provide the insights we need to bolster that 90% mental in with Yogi's other half of the equation. Steve is one of an incredibly short list of returning guests over our 350+ episodes for a reason. African-American gospel singer Mahalia Jackson, sitting just a few yards to his left, shouted “Tell them about the dream, Martin!” Dr. King took note, paused, slid his notes on the podium to the side, and improvisationally launched into the speech that would help change the course of history. Send us a Text Message.Delayed gratification. When it comes to health, wellness and high performance, it's the holy grail, right? Well, not so fast. Back in 1970, psychologist and Stanford professor Walter Mischel (‘mishel”) performed the marshmallow study. It purported to show that children who were able to delay gratification by choosing not to eat a marshmallow when left alone in a room in order to earn 2 marshmallows went on to garner greater success across a range of areas, including school and careers. It's been a cornerstone concept for speakers, coaches and consultants for decades. But can it go too far? Today's guest, Dr. Jacqueline Rifkin has spent her career answering that question, studying how we manage our resources, including time, money and even experiences. Her findings – which she recently shared in a fascinating Wall Street Journal article – may not exactly align with what you've been taught. Maybe there is a time and a place to eat that marshmallow afterall. We'll talk about the other side of delayed gratification, the specialness spiral and more, and I think you'll be surprised, and perhaps encouraged, by what she has to share. Dr. Rifkin has her PhD in Marketing from Duke University and has done extensive work in both marketing and consumer research market. She is an assistant professor of marketing at Cornell University, teaching consumer behavior at both the undergrad and graduate levels.Looking for weekly tips, tricks and turbo boosts to enhance your life? Caregiving is often the cornerstone of family; for many of us, our parents are our first caregivers. If we're lucky enough to make it to an advanced age, our children might one day return that care toward the end of our lives. But what happens when a child needs care beyond the expected range? How does that impact our caregivers? Join host Jennie Brooks and Nora Huggins, a project coordinator in Booz Allen's Civil Sector, as we explore those very questions. Stay tuned to find out how Nora tends to her own wellness, and why it's so important for caregivers everywhere to understand that they are not alone.Episode 1 of our 2024 Wellness Series: https://unstoppabletogether.simplecast.com/episodes/exploring-wellness-what-is-it-and-who-is-it-for Host: Jennie Brooks, Executive Vice President, Navy Marine Corps TeamWriting, Editing, & Production:- Erin Prah, DEI Program Manager- Enrico E. Today's guest is Dr. Brent Ruby, Director of the Montana Center for Work Physiology and Exercise Metabolism. What that really means is he specializes in studying free-range humans – not in the lab like most researchers – but in the wild, where real life is happening. This has involved chasing fire crews up and down mountains and trailing ultra-athletes through Badwater, along the Race Across America, and in various Ironman events for 25+ years. Today we'll dig into the latest research and what it means, not only for extreme athletes, but for each of us as we traverse this thing called life.Looking for weekly tips, tricks and turbo boosts to enhance your life? Host Jennie Brooks sits down with Will Healy, a senior VP in Booz Allen's Chief Technology Office and executive sponsor of the Firm's Disabilities & Neurodiversity Employee Community to talk about how we can find models of wellness that work, but don't feel like a second job. Perfectionism. While it may be the obvious answer to the interview question about our “greatest weaknesses,” the potential negative influence it can have on our lives is palatable – and none of us are immune. Today we have the privilege of having Dr. Thomas Curran, best-selling author of the hugely popular book The Perfection Trap: Embracing the Power of Good Enough. He is also a professor of psychology at the London School of Economics and author of a landmark study the BBC hailed as “the first to compare perfectionism across generations.” Oh – and by the way, his TED talk on the subject has received more than 3 million views.Thank you for joining us here on the Catalyst 360 podcast - this interview is one we've been working on a very long time. I met Dr. Curran over a beer when we were both attending a sports psychology conference in Germany about 5 years ago. I remember being impressed by him at the time and then suddenly started seeing his name everywhere when his book shot to the top of the charts. You'll see why as we discuss why perfectionists are actually limiting their performance, strategies for harnessing the potential positives without falling prey to the pitfalls, the role sledgehammers can play in the perfectionist's journey and what parents, educators and leaders can do to turn the tide of perfectionism in a positive direction. How does a real coaching session work? What goes into it? What results stem from it? We may hear about health & wellness coaching available through our employer or EAP, see people across various social media platforms claiming to be life coaches or wellness coaches and of course see athletic coaches taking front and center on a regular basis. But what's the difference between someone who might call themselves a coach and an experienced, nationally board-certified health & wellness coach? And what is it like to be coached by someone who actually knows what they're doing? These are questions we're asked regularly. And, while we can spend hours explaining it, the single best way to understand is to experience it in person. The second best way is to listen in on a real, live, unscripted coaching session. That is exactly what you'll tap into in this episode, as Brian Allen, a nationally board-certified health & wellness coach for Catalyst Coaching 360 will be coaching Suzy Lewis, as she generously allows us a very real, raw, uncensored look into her life and some of the things she's working through right now. There was no script. This is the real deal. As you'll hear, every coaching session is unique, and the dance between the coach and the client involves reflection, restatements, silence, intrigue, left turns and some pretty interesting self-discovery. Whether or not Suzy's journey mirrors your own or is on a completely different path, there is so much for us to glean as we have the opportunity to be a fly on the wall to this magical session. Oh- and by the way – once they wrap up the coaching session, we'll transition into an incredibly insightful debrief with the two of them, as they discuss some of the things happening behind the scenes while the coaching was taking place. In addition to his work with Catalyst Coaching 360, Brian is also the founder and lead coach of Pursuit Health and Wellness Coaching out of Chattanooga, TN Looking for weekly tips, tricks and turbo boosts to enhance your life? “In the meantime,” is an oft-used phrase describing the moments, weeks, or months between now and an important occurrence in the future (e.g., “We're moving this fall, but in the meantime we need to get things organized”). The phrase dates to the 14th century referencing an intervening time, building on the assumption that nothing particularly important will occur during “the meantime” (mean as in average or in-between time). But what if “in the meantime” is where the biggest opportunities present themselves in our lives? What if the time I'm wishing away in anticipation of the upcoming “important” time around the bend is actually where the doors will open – but only if I'm tuning in? Why does stress produce sweat to the point the phrase “don't sweat it” has become commonplace? Why do some of us produce colorful or odd smelling sweat? And – as our wearable trackers continue to advance – should we be concerned about the ability of organizations to track the molecules contained in our sweat that reveal secrets about our health and our habits?Welcome to the Catalyst 360 podcast, your source for engaging, evidence-based insights on health, wellness & high performance. Different forms of spirituality and how they can be used as a catalyst for personal growth. Why “wellness” isn't just what you see in the mirror and what else you should measure. How moving thousands of miles apart actually improved their brand and brought Krista and Lindsey closer together (and how they did it).
