Life Coaching: A New Dimension in Counseling Today we discuss the recent upsurge in life coaching, and feature one of the leaders in this emerging field, Angela Poch, and one of her wonderful students, Lorna Bird. Lorna Bird Angela Poch (see featured photo) is a Registered Professional Counsellor (RPC) with the Canadian Professional Counselling Association, certified Master Life Coach, and TEAM-CBT Level 4 Advanced Therapist and Trainer. She has been teaching health and wellness for over 30 years and was Vice President of Education with the Adventist Association of Health & Wellness Coaching. She has written several articles and books on health and wellness including, “The Truth Will Set You Free.” She has a YouTube channel (@talkingteamcbt) interviewing clinicians about their journeys with TEAM-CBT. She also has a channel on psychology and health (@bodymindhealth4u). Lorna Bird holds a Diploma of Counseling from Australia and is a certified Life and Health Coach. She is also a Level 3 certified TEAM-CBT therapist  https://www.yestohealth.com.au/ Angela and Lorna will give us the true scoop on coaching. To get started, what IS coaching, and how does it differ from psychotherapy? I am aware that our podcast goes worldwide, so the answer may differ depending on the country or state where you live. According to AI, “In California, the term "psychotherapist" is defined in the Civil Code to include a number of mental health professionals, including psychologists, psychiatrists, and clinical social workers. In general, anyone who provides psychotherapy or counseling in California, whether in person, by phone, or online, must be licensed.in California.” Coaching is quite different. Again, according to AI, “In California, there are no specific state-mandated requirements for individuals to use the term "coach" or practice life coaching, meaning anyone can technically call themselves a coach without obtaining a specific license.” Angela Poch resides in Canada, and she has been a leading and beloved member of the TEAM-CBT community. She emphasized several differences between a “coach” and a licensed mental health professional: Diagnosis: A coach does not diagnose clients into the familiar DSM categories of “mental disorders,” such as “Major Depressive Illness,” “Bipolar Disorder,” “Schizophrenia,” or any of the hundreds of “mental disorders” listed in the DSM. In the same vein, licensed mental health professionals will typically screen for suicidal thoughts and urges, and will treat suicidal individuals, but this is forbidden territory for coaches. Purpose / aims of coaching: The purpose or aims of coaching do not, as a rule, involve delving into your past to search for the “cause(s)” of your problems, such as adverse childhood experiences or traumas. Instead, the focus of coaching is primarily on making changes in the here-and-now in how you think, feel, and relate to others. This might involve learning to challenge distorted negative thoughts so you will think and feel more positively about your life, as well as how to relate to others more skillfully. Coaching is goal-oriented and forward-moving rather than dwelling on the past. Of course, good counsellors and licensed mental health professionals may also provide tools to move forward as well, so there can be overlap. Training / credentialing: Because coaching is so new, there are not yet any widely accepted standards or requirements for calling yourself a “coach.” There is a varying degree of training to be “certified,” which might just consist of watching a couple videos to 100's of hours of supervision with the ICF (International Coaching Federation), and everything in between. Here's a generalized diagram Angela created to help with further clarification. NOTE: many TEAM-CBT therapists also are client/goal focused as well as and will often use coaching-style tools. Angela described a 20-hour “Feeling Great Coach” certification program she has developed. Her program is based almost entirely on TEAM-CBT and includes a final exam you must pass to get certified. She also offers a TEAM-CBT Masterclass & Mentoring Program for both coaches as well as therapists that includes live training twice a month, online practice groups, case consultation in small groups, one-on-one mentoring sessions, and personal work as well. She said this integrates seamlessly with FGI's Fast Track program, any of David's intensives, or the Tuesday group for those who want more individualized support and training. Lorna enthusiastically described her experiences learning from many of Angela's training programs. I (David) have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Angela for many years now, starting with her attendance at a number of my intensives and two-day TEAM-CBT training programs in Canada. Lorna is really enjoying the Masterclass Mentoring Program and recommends you take Angela's free workshop called “Effective Compassion.” You can check it out at www.teamcbt.ca/effectivecompassion How do I, David, feel about coaching? I am, for the most part, enthusiastic, but with a few reservations. I would have to confess that I spent 5 years in medical school, four more years in psychiatric residency, plus two years in post-doctoral research training at top institutions, but did not learn much at all, if anything, that has really helped me treat human beings who are hurting. Of course, I did learn how to prescribe drugs for those with severe difficulties, like Bipolar I Disorder, or Paranoid Schizophrenia, but that definitely did not require years and years of intensive medically oriented training. All I ever really wanted to do was psychotherapy. In my last year or so of post-doctoral psychiatric training, I discovered cognitive therapy, although it was not a part of the required curriculum, and learned quite a lot that has been really helpful in working with patients. But for the most part, all of the extensive medical training I received had very little, at best, to do with how I now work with patients, and an awful lot of what I do was things I had to figure out for myself. I do have great respect for psychology training (either clinical psychology or PsyD training), because of the emphasis on research and critical thinking, but I do think there is lots of room for new approaches such as coaching to emerge and evolve, and it seems to be the case that more people than ever are still struggling with depression, anxiety, addictions, rage, and more. Like any field, I think coaching is vulnerable to misuse by narcissistic individuals who wish to deceive or exploit the general public, and individuals who are naïve or unaware of the background or training of their therapists are perhaps at great risk of abuse. But I would also say that this problem is in no way limited to coaching, since a great many licensed mental health professionals have been charged and convicted of all manner of unethical conduct and as well as malpractice over the years as well. That's why I'm enthusiastic about responsible leaders who, like Angela Poch, are blazing new trails and setting the bar high for those who wish to enter the field of life coaching. I'm also delighted to see that for years now, the Feeling Good Institute (FGI, feelinggoodinsititute.com) has included coaches in their superb training programs as well, and many high profile individuals you may be familiar with, like our beloved Professor Mark Noble, have taken and benefit from TEAM-CBT certification via the FGI. To learn more, contact Angela at feelinggreat@angelapoch.com or visit https://angelapoch.com/ to learn about Angela's many training and treatment programs. The year was 1977. Star Wars made its debut… the Apple II computer was released… Elvis Presley passed away at age 42… our hometown Denver Broncos experienced their “miracle season” on the way to the Super Bowl… Chuck E. Cheese pizza opens their first location…and disco was nearing it's peak in popularity. But something else happened that year that may have influenced the world more than any of these: the first wearable heartrate monitor was developed for the Finnish National Cross Country ski team by Polar. That development changed the way both professional and amateur athletes trained and kicked the door open to our current “wearables,” which now provide more physiological data on our wrist than a room full of hospital gizmos could do just a few decades ago.Welcome to latest episode of the Catalyst 360 Podcast – your trusted resource for engaging, evidence-based health, wellness & performance insights.  Today's guest is one of the trailblazers in the application of that heart rate data – Sal Edwards. But when I began preparing for this interview, her background exploded off the pages of my notes. Yes – she's a leader in the world of HR monitoring and that's where we'll focus our discussion. But she's also a serial entrepreneur, founding Fleet Feet – the largest chain of retail sports shops, has written 24 books and 500 articles, and was a professional triathlete, ultra runner, won the Western States 100 miler and is a member of the Triathlon Hall of Fame. I was on a totally different career path. And it's through my own struggles that allowed me in that personal deep work to realize, Oh my gosh, there is a way out and there's a way to help others. So if you've gone through a struggle, if you've gone through something that's really been challenging, and you are coming up the other side and you're realizing I want to help other women, that's a sign often that struggle is the point where you can help others.”“I started just falling in love with the potentiality of helping others who really want to go beyond ‘just fine'  to more extraordinary.” “I always say the more that you do that deep inner work, the deeper you're able to go with others.”“I personally believe we're not meant to do our life alone. And there's something extremely powerful about having somebody who can truly be focused 100% on you.”“Without that support, you're gonna continue doing what you're doing. And that means designing a life that is by default, versus coaches come in, you know, well trained coaches can help you to design your life by design by your, you know, intention by your, by new habits and goals. And that's how you make change.”“If you are not living a life that feels like it's maximizing and actualizing your gifts and your potential, then I would highly recommend getting somebody who can help support you.”“If you're somebody who you feel like people come to naturally, those are some really good indications that you would be a phenomenal life coach.” Connect with Julie:⭐ Connect on Instagram @juliereisler⭐ Connect on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/JulieReislerLifeDesigner/⭐ Website: https://juliereisler.com⭐ https://insighttimer.com/juliereisler⭐ Check out resources provided by Julie:Free Life Coach's Toolset: https://members.juliereisler.com/~access/a7c540f/Free Masterclasses & Open Houses: https://members.juliereisler.com/~access/a5c540f/Life Designer® Coach Academy Page: https://members.juliereisler.com/~access/a6c540f/ Connect with Allison:⭐ Connect on Instagram @allisonwalsh⭐ JOIN OUR FREE COMMUNITY: https://www.facebook.com/groups/shebelievedshecouldcommunity⭐ Check out book recommendations from the show here⭐ Download your free 90 day planner here

"Appreciating every moment doesn't mean pretending that something is good when it isn't. It's not about denial or delusion. It's about training yourself to see the good that actually exists alongside the challenges and to notice the ripple effect of this positive perspective." ~ Dr. Frank Lipman Guest Introduction: Welcome to another episode of Exploring the Seasons of Life, a podcast for women with a big heart on a spiritual journey. I'm your host Cindy MacMillan and I'm joined today by Dr. Laura Ricci. Each week, I interview coaches, spiritual explorers and essential oil enthusiasts from all walks of life about beginnings, endings and the messy bits in-between. Self-love, well-being, and mindset are at the heart of our conversations because once you change the inside, the outside will begin to change as well.  This podcast series is called Grit, Grace and Gratitude: Navigating Emotional Wellbeing with Essential Oils.  Join me on this journey of learning about essential oils and integrating them into our daily lives. I am delighted to introduce my guest, Dr. Laura Ricci. Dr. Laura Ricci is a licensed doctor of physical therapy specializing in Women's Health and Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation, a certified Women's Health and Functional Nutrition Coach (WHNC) through the Integrative Women's Health Institute, a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) through the International Consortium for Health & Wellness Coaching, and an essential oil educator and international leader with doTERRA essential oils. Through her own medical challenges, including cancer and major orthopedic surgery, she found a passion for natural remedies and functional nutrition. She strives to be a light in the darkness, offering hope for others with her personal story of love and healing. Here's a glimpse of our conversation: Dr. Laura, Thank you for coming on the podcast. 2:26 For me, it's honoring your seasons, and honoring the season that you're in, I think there is a time for creation and there's a time for rest. And even with our hormones, as women, I really try to plan my work, and my month around my hormonal cycle, knowing that there are going to be times when I have more energy around ovulation. And then there are going to be times where I'm going to need more rest around my period. 11:35 I think how we do one thing is how we do everything. And you cannot lead others until you can lead yourself. And I came across this quote by Elbert Hubbard that says, “Self-discipline is the ability to make yourself do what you should do, when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not.” And I think most people are waiting around to feel like doing the thing, they're gonna wait till they feel motivated to go to the gym, or to live a health and wellness lifestyle, or eat a cleaner diet or all of these things. And what I found is, you're not going to feel like doing it 100% of the time. 14:46 When you become a person who keeps commitments to yourself, your word takes on a different meaning. When you commit or you say that you're going to do something, you really think about it and decide whether or not you're going to keep that commitment. too, and you build that trust, and you become a person who keeps those commitments. And it actually comes back to you, knowing deep down inside that you are worthy of doing these things for your health and wellness. 21:18 I say if you want an easy button, and you want it just done for you. Adaptive is my jam. It's probably one of my favorite oils. It's the oil that I leaned on a lot going into major surgeries. It's such a beautiful one.  But if you wanted to make a roller ball blend, I like this blend of 10 drops each Bergamot which is a really beautiful citrus oil and emotionally it's the “oil of self-acceptance”. So, 10 drops of bergamot, 10 drops of peppermint, which is very energizing. And it helps with focus 10 drops of the Ylang Ylang which emotionally is the “oil of the inner child” to kind of help with play and spontaneity and 10 drops of wild orange oil, which is the “oil of abundance”. It's another citrus oil, its which is very energizing, and 10 drops of Copaiba. And if you don't have all of these oils just yet, use what you have. But 10 drops each bergamot, peppermint, ylang ylang, wild orange, and Copaiba. And then top with your favorite carrier oil of choice in a 10 ML roller bottle. I really love fractionated coconut oil. And that is just a really beautiful roller ball that you can roll it on your wrists, behind your ears over your heart, even the back of the neck or roll on your hands. And then do a nice palm inhale, just kind of cup your hands over your mouth and nose and take a couple slow deep breaths. But that's a beautiful one just for wellbeing and supporting your emotions when you need it. You can find Dr. Laura Ricci at:  Instagram Facebook Website IF YOU LOVED THIS EPISODE WITH DR. She has followed this path ever since, gaining more education and experience and building her tribe along the way, so she can support ever greater numbers of people on an impactful level.  Ellen now teaches and assists others to achieve their nutrition, fitness, health, and well-being objectives by making positive, simple, and long-term lifestyle changes. Some of which she shares with you in this episode. She has empowered hundreds of individuals and groups in dozens of organisations throughout the world to go from knowing what to do to actually doing it! Why it's critical to determine what you don't want to do. How to navigate with the need rather than creating a need. The importance of nurturing your network. We started this Podcast to be completely transparent about the challenges people face in their health journey and life.  This episode was not planned, we were supposed to have a guest on, and things didn't work out. We always have backup topics just in case something like this happens. But on this particular day, we both had so much going on personally, we ended up pressing record and just started talking about everything that was happening in our lives. No one is perfect, not even people in the fitness industry. Unfortunately, social media has a tendency only to portray the highlights and not the struggles. We believe that one of the ways to lead by example is by being honest and sharing our struggles openly and honestly.  In our clinical practice, we have found that most people won't be completely honest about their struggles if the professional they're working with portrays perfection. A sense of judgment can hold people back from getting to the root cause of their issues. This is why we have a realistic approach to all things related to health and wellness. Launching a Fitness Business: Live Coaching Call

Fitness Marketing Mastery

My guest today is Karla from Arizona and a shout out to FitnessFest events where we ran into each other. Karla asked a couple great questions that I have a hunch may be of interest to you too. Whether you're got a business you want to grow, you're itching to leave working for a boss and interested in launching a fitness business  or somewhere between this live coaching call can help you too.  BACKGROUND: I teach yoga for community andemployeesin the school district in which I work. I use a school within the district to teach my classes.  I run the classes via the “Academic Support Systems” department. So, it's kind of my own thing, but yet runs through the school district.  I don't have much support getting the school district to “advertise” for me with social media, as I don't think they like the word “yoga” and it's connotations; all I get is a paper flyer that is sent out via e-mail to the school secretaries to post/display by teacher mailboxes.   QUESTION: Is there a way to use social media on my own to promote my classes? Can I set up my own webpage or Facebook page for this?  What other types of social media can I use?  I am not very techie and have very little experience with social media…I'm 58 years old and just getting started understanding how it all works. ANSWER: YES! By all means! The School should love that you do it. Does the school have a page? If so tag them. Start posting regularly. Share an article that is supportive of the purpose of the classes you teach. Who pays you? What is the mission of the agency paying you or hosting you? What can you share in alignment with that mission? While they may not see value in promoting or hosting. They will see great value if they start getting positive PR from what you do. QUESTION: I am also working on my Health & Wellness Coach certification (will be done in Sept/Oct.). I already am certified with the following:  ACE Group Fitness, RYT 500 Yoga, Cycling, NCSF Personal Training.  I would like to start my own LLC, but not sure how to start out getting clients.  What are the most powerful ways to start using social media to get going? ANSWER: First, you don't need an LLC to start getting clients. Launching a fitness business involves testing the concept first. You need a website. Then if you're using social media you're using it to drive people to a website. You have zero control over social media. It's here but you have nothing to show for anything you do there unless you have a way for them to come off social media onto your website and an EMAIL list. You must begin building an email list. Use Constant Contact, Mail Chimp or Aweber for free or $5 until you have more subscribers but get it. And a way for people to sign up on your website so you can then communicate with them. The best use of social media is video. Video.video. Live, recorded, shared. QUESTION: I also am trying to narrow down my focus (target audience) as you had mentioned in your presentation at FitnessFest. It's hard because there are so many aspects of fitness that I love and want to share!  Here are a few of my ideas: Beginners to exercise…people who are hesitant to get started…easy, practical, fun and “do-able” ways to get moving and be healthy Yoga for beginners Health/Wellness Coaching (in person and on-line) ANSWER: I think you can easily combine these. When launching a fitness business you do want to focus but these overlap. Your market may not know they're looking for yoga. They know they're beginners. They also may not know they're looking for health & wellness coaching (it's intangible) but they know they should be exercising. You can start there. But that's not still a niche. Is this a beginner who's 20 or who's 50? Or 70? Is it a male? Or a female? Is it a married or single person? Someone budget minded or with money to burn? Why aren't they exercising now? What have they tried? What do they hate about exercise and personal trainers? When you're launching a fitness business the biggest mistake trainers or business owners make is thinking they know what the customer is really thinking. QUESTION: Bottom line… I am scared…I have worked FOR a school district (stable job/money, insurance, etc.) my whole life. I have had the “itch” to do something in the health/wellness area for 25+ years!  I have always taught fitness classes as a “second career”, but I want to try something maybe part-time to transition.  Not sure if I should just jump in and do it full-time or do it little by little.  I know there's no easy answer for that!  Any thoughts or words of wisdomJ?  ANSWER: START.. keep your job, but do a side hustle. Launching a fitness business has to have deadlines but you want a safety net. Get some steady income coming in. Start with who you know. Are there teachers not exercising that want to? You've got a pool of clients. Who possibly want the same time slot. So begin a group and optimize your time.
