A presentation of The PAPER STREET Podcast, 'LATE TO THE PARTY' is a recurring program that brings filmmakers, friends, and entertainment industry pros on to discuss one of their major movie blind spots. The guest chats with hosts Shawn Talley and Cameron Burns before watching the film, then reconvenes with them after having seen it to all share their thoughts on the movie and much more! This go-round, John Gholson — an actor, writer, cartoonist, comedian, and more, who you may have seen in films including ZERO CHARISMA, and Paper Street's own BLOOD RELATIVES — was late to the party on TOMBSTONE, but we're glad he made it! The gents get into the popular western's endlessly recognizable cast, its historical accuracy, the conflicting behind-the-scenes drama of the production, and of course, the memorable performance by Val Kilmer, whose recent passing pushed this episode to the front of the line. If you've seen the 1993 film TOMBSTONE, check out this tangent-filled conversation. And if you haven't, you're late to the party, but that's okay; we'll still be here when you get to it! For show notes and additional links to our guests on this and all previous episodes, please visit paperstreetpodcast.com.

In Zero Charisma we have some great lessons, if not a couple of them being cautionary. A power-hungry, immature Game Master loses a longtime player and reluctantly brings on a new player. This player doesn't understand how the GM likes to play, and starts to pull the rest of the players away from the GM's carefully crafted - and controlled - world. Zero Charisma can be found on Tubi.

This week we introduce a brand new feature segment to the podcast: Retro Retrospective! Both Steve and Jarman pick one of their favorite movies that the other has not seen, and then they join up on the podcast to review them with each other. In future iterations of this segment they will surely not agree on why each movie should be a favorite, but this time around, they do! For this episode we review one of Steve's favorites, The Dark Crystal, from the genius mind of Jim Henson; and for one of Jarman's favorites, we review Zero Charisma, a film all about a misfit who runs some serious games of Dungeons and Dragons. Let us know what you think of the new segment! For Nerdy News Steve tells us of 99 million year old ants and why human babies are so useless, and Jarman regales us with news of possible Captain Marvel casting in the MCU and how Elon Musk thinks we are definitely living in a computer simulation. For Trailer Reviews we have the new and improved Star Trek Beyond trailer and the Mark Strong lonesome in space flick, Exploring the Unknown. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. ARE YOU READY TO PODCAAAAAAST? Well, good, because Patrick and Julian are joined by JD and fan favorite John Gholson to talk about some rasslin'. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but if you aren't a wrestling fan this episode of Nerds Without Pants just might help you understand why some of us are. We open with some brief talk about how we got into this silly show, but the first segment is pretty much dedicated to Wrestlemania XXX, which everyone agrees was a pretty fantastic event. Hear about Stone Cold Steve Austin's problems with Trader Joe's. Decide for yourself if Antonio Cesaro is a human or a Super Saiyan. Find out the shocking truth about what the Undertaker does when he's not in the ring! We wrap up with some discussion on wrestling video games because, hey, we're a video game podcast! John has a soft spot for WWF No Mercy, Julian defends WWF Attitude, and JD has fun with his create a wrestler modes. Patrick is too much of a poet to get down and dirty in the squared circle, but he's had his moments with wrestling, as well. We hope you enjoy this episode, and don't forget that you can purchase Zero Charisma, a film featuring the one and only Mr. Gholson, on DVD now. (Seriously, go and buy that. It's really good!) FEATURED MUSIC: Whatever (Chris Benoit) Live in Fear (Bray Wyatt) Rest in Peace (The Undertaker) Unstable (The Ultimate Warrior)

How can you as a Dungeon Master take advantage of the dramatic mechanic of the cliffhanger in your campaign tonight? How can you avoid disappointment while preparing for excellence when setting your players up to maximum anticipation? Are you sitting at the edge of your ear seats?Because we're about to drop a cliffhanger on you. And no, Sylvester Stallone is not involved. We recorded so much content about cliffhangers that we couldn't resist the oh-so-meta urge to split one ginormous cliffhanger episode into more than one episode about ... dun dun dunnnnn ... cliffhanger endings to your campaign sessions! But first ... dun dun dunnnn... we read some emails!from William: Wulfgar's real life manifesto of warTweet from @rzrstrm: with a recommendation for Game Night Games in Salt Lakefrom Robert: EDM stuff and validation of William's Wayne's World referencefrom Blair: Hey Exemplary DM!Who can recommend online Pathfinder char generation tools?perhaps HeroLab?In which we discussed Zero Charisma.Twitter convo about winter from the sprawling metropolis of Rochester, MN, as a preview of the stuff we discuss on twitter, aside from funny dnd quips. Many metals become brittle in cold weather. The frost, sometimes it makes the blade stick. Also, mutated Alpacas in Gamma World. from the wife : i can haz moar podcast?Skill challenges should be well described, not just math, a "choose your own adventure"The side conversations and camaraderie during long journeys and uneventful time from adam: re: Thoughts on a horror campaign? http://weir-with-awl.obsidianportal.com and their professional cartographerHighly recommend DM's do NPC accents, "the better the worse"from andy: DM appreciationpicking up the torchthanks Andy for warming our cockles Top 10 Tips to Implementing CliffhangersAt the end of your next D&D session, pull an old trick from: the end of every Dan Brown chapter, the end of Star Trek:TNG The Best Of Both Worlds Pt. 1, the end of Christopher Nolan's Inception and all three of his Batman films, the final episode of Twin Peaks, the end of X- Men II, the end of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the Back to the Future movies, the end of Matrix Reloaded, the end of the first Kill Bill, the end of the first season of Jericho, the end of the patched version of Portal 1 which came out right before Portal 2, the end of the old BBC show Blake's 7, the end of Half Life 2, the end of Mass Effect 2, the last episode before the break in the middle of The Walking Dead season three, end of the Sopranos, the end of every season of Lost, the every episode of 24 or really right before the commercial break of any action prime time action television show, and of course, that movie Cliffhanger (with Stallone and Merle from The Walking Dead). Why do they use cliffhangers? The Zeigarnik Effect (Ignore the cat in the background. It isn't a cliffhanging cat. Yet.)What we're trying to do here is create a memorable anticipation for the next game session. So like the end of Inception, you really want to know the ending, but unlike Inception, you really want to resolve the action in the next campaign but more importantly - make your characters look forward to it.Cliffhangers require setup in order to connect you to the suspense and the new danger or intrigue that has been introduced and left in the balance. This is where you planning capabilities as a DM come into play. (But don't railroad!) Good cliffhangers do one or more of the following:Reference character backstoryChange the timing of a well thought out planProvide new and sudden inspiration Place one or more loved ones in mortal dangerReveal a terrible betrayalPervert the ending to an otherwise innocent quest (but in a fun way)Renew an old love, hatred, stress, fear or desireIntroduce a new villain or ally, or change an ally to a villain or villain to any allyChange the weather, stars above, lightning, atmosphere or tone, or height of the flame of the candleEncourage discussion or wonderment about what's about to happen away from the tableLet something happen that everyone has wanted to happen for a long time happen, then make them wait for the next session to see the aftermath. W's wife pointed out, in Friends, when Ross and Rachel kissed, everyone wanted to know well what happens next.Say the players finally are made members of the Thieves' Guild, and you end the session there. They'll want to play the next session now that they've entered the state they wanted to be in for such a long time.Give them a new level (and therefore abilities/feats/stats) or a new item, then let the anticipation simmer.... dun dun dunnnn...Season 3, Episode 6, Part Two will be the conclusion of The Cliffhanger Episode... Hold your hammer to the skies and take off with Steve and Dan to Asgard for a review of Thor: The Dark World. Is this post Avengers Marvel film worthy of the Gods? In our news segment we yet again wage discussion on the on again/off again rumors of a new Ghostbusters film (hint: It's on again), we are intrigued with the announcement of a Marvel/Netflix team up, are saddened by the end of the video store era with the closing of the remaining Blockbusters and take to a knee to honor a man who saved his beer from a burning house. Our douche of the week is a wonderful lady in West Fargo who thoughfully handed out "you're fat" notes to kids instead of candy on Halloween. Because we know finding just the right flick to watch at home is a daunting task, check out our mini reviews of Blackfish, Haunters, Monsters University, Ass Backwards, Zero Charisma and 12 Years A Slave. Inspired by the Thor/Loki sibling dynamic, our top 5 this week centers around some of our all time favorite siblings in movies, followed by our spoiler filled review of Thor: The Dark World. And...Dan finally watches Road House.
On today's show we explore the most obvious cultural trend of our time -- the infusion of geeky stuff into the mainstream. We'll talk with Zero Charisma directors Katie Graham and Andrew Matthews about getting geek culture right in their fan favorite film portraying a D&D-like gaming group and their fragile leader. Plus, Great Showdowns artist Scott Campbell (see above) explains why he puts smiley faces on everything and shares his towering movie passion. And since I'm feeling overwhelmed by the amount of capes on the big screen, Agents of Geek founder Jim Napier drops by to lift my spirits by offering an optimistic outlook on the future of geek film properties. You should follow Scott C. (@scottlava), Jim Napier (@jim_napier), the show (@brokenprojector), Geoff (@drgmlatulippe) and Scott (@scottmbeggs) on Twitter for more on a daily basis. And, as always, if you like the show (or hate it with seething fervor), please help us out with a review.

It's a somber week for video games, as we have lost a titan. Ryan Davis, host of the Giant Bombcast has passed away, and Julian and Patrick start this episode of Nerds Without Pants by talking about how important Ryan was, and how much he's influenced NWP. After that, it's nearly an hour and a half of media consumption. Things go all over the place, as the guys talk about Dragon Age: Inquisition, Mondo Gecko, that Grand Theft Auto V trailer, and Saints Row the Third and the Fourth. Then there's some stuff with The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, comic book woes, Patrick's Rage Against Square Enix, and the realization that Blitzball sucks. But that's not all! What does the Big Bang Theory and porn have in common? Does the geek movie Zero Charisma roll a natural 20? What happens when Julian gets sweet, sweet revenge in Pathfinder? Oh, there's also some talk about Time and Eternity. All this and more can be found in this episode of Nerds Without Pants. FEATURED MUSIC: Theme from The Giant Bombcast Boy- Army The Lonely Island- I'm on a Boat Stephen Lynch- D&D Kanye West- Power
