In this episode of Lead With That, Ren and Allison explore the vast expanse of space in the context of leadership. On June 5, 2024, NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore journeyed into space for an 8-day trip to the International Space Station. To their surprise, returning to Earth became more complicated than expected. They were delayed several times due to a myriad of issues. On March 28, 2025, after 286 days – almost 9 months – at the space station, Williams and Wilmore safely returned back to Earth. While life in space is much different from Earth, the leadership skills and resilience the astronauts showed in the face of uncertainty are tools that other leaders can relate to. In this episode of Lead With That, Ren and Allison tackle the Oscars—not by debating who should or shouldn't have won, but by highlighting what we can learn about leadership from the Oscar nominees. For example, what does Wicked have to say about maintaining relationships when dealing with adversity? Or what can a character from another planet teach us about staying true to ourselves when making difficult decisions? And finally, is there something we can learn from established actor Demi Moore about taking risks and staying relevant? Ren and Allison tease out these lessons and others from this year's Oscar contenders. In this episode of Lead With That, Ren and Allison discuss the recent downsizing at Tesla and the ripple effect that massive layoffs have on leaders and employees across organizations and industries. Beginning this June, Tesla announced plans to lay off around 2,600 employees over a 2-week period, a large percentage of its global workforce. The announcement adds to a growing list of companies following the same pattern: years of growth followed by massive layoffs, leaving thousands of employees in a dreaded position. So, what's the solution? Ultimately, employees and lower-level leaders don't always have the power to influence these decisions, but they do have the ability to lead themselves and their teams though the fallout in an impactful and positive way. While as a leader there always needs to be a balance between nurturing employees and focusing on the bottom line, the conversation highlights why great leadership is what makes the most difference during times of conflict and disruption. From “Quiet Quitting” to “The Great Resignation” to now navigating an unpredictable market filled with layoffs and downsizing, workers are struggling more than ever to find a place in their careers, and within organizations where they feel fulfilled. Employers are also struggling with finding the balance between nurturing a sense of security amongst employees while also being focused on the bottom line. With the recent highly publicized layoffs by large companies like Spotify and the media attention that has been given to the desire, or lack thereof, that people have to work, there seems to be a constant flow of conflicting messages – but ultimately the only way to stay grounded and feel fulfilled is to hold candid, constructive conversations with one another. In this episode of Lead With that, Ren and Allison discuss the leadership lessons that we can glean from current societal conversations surrounding what being a “family” in the workplace really entails. As of late, many organizations have moved away from referring to employees as a family and have gravitated towards the concept of the “dream team,” or a more sports team-like structure. This change in jargon has seemingly led to positive organizational culture change as well, with Netflix being cited as a recent example of this. With the idea of being a well-rounded leader in the sports arena also showing up more in popular culture, like in Ted Lasso for instance, many of those in the workforce are fully embracing this this mindset and molding themselves and their leadership styles to fit it. While there are still many different opinions about the characteristics of a good leader, the conversation highlights from a leadership perspective what the true value of leadership that centers around building and managing teams may be and how this will affect organizational cultures moving forward. In this episode of Lead With That, Ren and Allison discuss the leadership lessons we can learn from the communication, or lack thereof, surrounding recent natural disasters. In early August 2023, a series of deadly wildfires broke out on the Island of Maui in Hawaii leading to widespread damage and catastrophic loss. A few weeks later in early September, a Mediterranean storm made landfall over northeastern Libya, resulting in devastating flooding and the tragic loss thousands of lives. Unfortunately, a common thread connects these disasters: a lack of trust between the people affected and those leading the charge to protect them. While natural disasters are out of human control, the fallout from these incidents highlights, from a leadership perspective, broader issues related to communication during a crisis, how trust affects action, and how human-centered leadership makes all the difference. On this episode of Lead With That, Ren and Allison discuss the leadership lessons in innovation and change management that we can take from the creation of the social media website Threads amidst the major changes that are being made to the platform formerly known as Twitter, X. As both sites are currently a hot topic in the media, many are wondering what the future holds for both and what their possible societal and technological impact may be. While Twitter's successor, X, is working to make an impact by discarding its former branding as a means of transformation, Threads is struggling to make a portion of the impact of its predecessor, Instagram. This brings forward questions surrounding the value of branding, working within an organization during disruption, and the role leaders play in times of growth and change. On this episode of Lead With That, Ren and Allison discus the leadership lessons that we can take from the current societal discussions surrounding inclusion for remote and hybrid employees. As of recent, the ethics, productivity, and health concerns related to remote work have been more prominently discussed in the media, due in part to many employers taking steps to put an end to allowing their employees to work away from the office. These changes have been a source of dismay for many of those in the workforce who have had the flexibility to work “unplugged” since the onset of the pandemic in early 2020. While there are many different opinions about the value of remote work, the conversation highlights from a leadership perspective what the true effects of remote work may be and who returning to the office really benefits. Join our hosts as they explore the landscape of hybrid work in 2023, its challenges, and how leaders can adapt their focus to the needs of those they are leading – regardless of how they view remote work. In this episode of Lead With That Ren and Allison explore the leadership lessons that we can glean from the current Writers' Strike. On May 1st, TV and Movie writers went on strike for the first time in 15 years after months long negotiations with film studios failed to create a new contract. The strike is complex issue involving power dynamics, negotiations between union representatives and production companies, and the potential long-term impact on the entertainment industry. While the writers' strike is primarily about fair treatment and compensation for workers, it also highlights, from a leadership perspective, broader concerns around workers' rights, the importance of collective bargaining, and the future of work. Join our hosts as they explore the 2023 Writers Strike: Why it's happening, how it's evolved, and what you might be able to learn about leadership – even if you don't live in LA. In this episode Ren and Allison discuss Corrine Diacre's leadership style, in the wake of her firing earlier this month. The head coach of the French Women's National Soccer Team, Diacre was fired just four months before the Women's World Cup this summer. The reason? “Malfunctions [that] seem[ed], in this context, irreversible,” according to the four-person panel commissioned by the French Football Federation's president, Philippe Diallo. He commissioned the panel to investigate claims about the culture in the team. In this episode Ren and Allison explore the different aspects of Diacre's leadership style and see what we can glean from her firing. On one hand, she was known for her strong personality and her ability to motivate her team to achieve great things. On the other hand, her authoritarian approach may have alienated some of her players and staff, and ultimately contributed to her downfall. Let's talk about the importance of creating a culture where people can thrive, and lead with that. Sometimes it's hard to find something good about leaders and leadership to talk about. And while we know recently in America there's loads to talk about from a leadership perspective, we decided to take a slightly different approach in this episode. In this season of thanks, we wanted to be very intentional about having a discussion about the importance of gratitude. As one of our amazing colleagues, Pete Ronayne says, "Gratitude and gratitude giving is one of those key components of burning brighter in the face of all that burn out." And so in this conversation Ren and Allison focus on what they've been grateful for this year and the kind of leaders and leadership that has been out there that they felt proud of, because truthfully, there's more good out there. There's more of you doing good out there than not. So join us as we give some thanks, share some gratitude and discuss the importance of facilitating environments where we can be grateful and lead with that. Hey, can you hear that? Probably not, because that's the sound of quiet quitting. You've likely heard of the phenomenon of quiet quitting or what some are really just calling someone doing their job description. As quiet quitting gained in popularity it highlighted what some managers have been doing for years, quiet firing. Quiet firing is when an employer does the bare legal minimum to get rid of an employee. This can often involve reducing their hours or making them do undesirable tasks until they eventually quit. And now, we've got quick quitting. Where people leave the organization within a year of joining without doing the obligatory stick it out for 2 years and don't move too much. Whether it's quietly doing just what your job demands of you. Or getting to a job and realizing it's not for you and leaving before the year is out, things are shifting in the American workforce. Like so many other things these days, it's not just organizations and leadership that get to do the quick and quiet firing. When things like this rise to the surface, we stop and take a look. What are the implications for leaders and leadership for people quietly quitting? How can we stem the tide of quick quitting, or is that even something we should do? And maybe quiet firing is one of the many tools used to make people quietly and quickly leave an organization. And as always, what is your role as a leader in this space? So in this episode, we talk quiet quitting, quick quitting, and some of the spaces in between. Related Resources: Focused on Improving Employee Engagement & Retention? "Earth is now our only stakeholder." That was written by Yvon Chouinard on September 14th as Patagonia's billionaire founder gave away his company to Mother Earth. Instead of selling Patagonia and taking the company public, Chouinard has given the 3 billion outdoor brand to a family trust and a not-for-profit called the Holdfast Collective. The goal with the creation of these entities is to put any profit not reinvested back into Patagonia towards fighting climate change, and at its best, it'll look like something like a hundred million dollars a year donated directly to saving our planet. Now, at a time when more and more billionaires are getting on board with "doing the right thing", at first glance, this action might not seem extraordinary. But after digging in and investigating the differences between the sale of Patagonia in this instance and the sale of so many other organizations, we see a difference here. In this episode Allison and Ren talk about an organization's role in doing the right thing, the kind of leaders it takes to do the right thing, some of the spaces in between and lead with that. On August 9th, one of the best athletes to ever grace the world of sports talked about Evolution. An Evolution away from the game of tennis and onto so many more things. Tennis superstar Serena Williams has began her farewell tour with tennis. Serena became a professional tennis player in 1995, at the age of 14. Three years later, she won her first grand slam title at 17, at the US Open. Since then, Serena Williams has won more Grand Slam singles titles (23!) than any other man or woman in the open era. It's easy to forget she has always won 14 grand slam doubles titles with her prolific tennis star sister along with 3 gold medals in Olympic doubles. Not to mention she's won nearly $100 million in prize money and has taken her tennis success into Venture Capitalism with Serena Ventures, a small VC firm with investments in MasterClass, Impossible Foods, and Noom, among many others. With such a CV, there is so much leadership wisdom to explore. What philosophies guided her on way to success? How is she going to lead Serena Ventures? How is she going to lead the other ventures of Serena through her family and her children? In this episode, part profile, part exploration, Allison and Ren discuss all things Serena Williams and encourage listeners to lead with that. The future of work, the future of automobiles, and the future of free speech: At the nexus point of all of these is Elon Musk. Musk has never shied away from the public but recently, through his attempted purchase of Twitter and his recent comments about remote work, he's once again caught our attention here at CCL. At the center of his comments stem 2 core issues of concern for leaders in this modern era: 1. What does leadership actually look like? Is leadership the role or realm of a single individual? Or can leadership be shared, cultivated, groomed, made to thrive together? 2. What does the future of work really look like? Will remote work actually be put on ice by the world's most powerful leaders? These are real questions affecting real people, so in this episode we have to dig in. Is Musk's point of view a taste of things to come? Or, is it that dying breath of a breed's last thrashings? Not sure the world's richest man would appreciate the comparison, and so here we are. Join Allison and Ren as they explore what lessons we can glean from the recent headlines involving Elon Musk and lead with that. The recent news cycle has been difficult to take in. Tragic, sad, intense. The impulse for leaders and their team members may be to compartmentalize and pivot the conversation, but so much of what's happening deserves recognition and discussion. What can leaders do to create an environment at work where employees can feel safe with their emotions, and don't have to pretend things are just okay? How can organizations prioritize the well-being and belonging of their employees, while keeping work moving? Let's explore how tragic things happening in the world can be met with empathetic communication and trusting relationships, and lead with that. On February 10th the U.S. Senate passed legislation that would end forced arbitration for workers who are victims of sexual assault and harassment. This isn't just one of the most significant changes to employment law in years, which is notoriously difficult to amend. But this is a high watermark of equitable, balanced treatment, of people in the workplace - especially women. Under the legislation, employers would be prohibited from forcing workers to settle sexual misconduct claims in closed-door arbitration venues. Employees instead would be able to file a suit in court with their own legal representation. Drastically changing an imbalanced power dynamic and hopefully leading to wider implications than what this has started. About 4 days later the Oscars announced Wanda Sykes, Amy Schumer and Regina Hall are set to host the 94th Oscars. Coincidence? Probably. But as it does, these two events got Allison and Ren thinking. Thinking about allyship, inclusion, equity, and what we can learn from these parallel events as we aim to democratize leadership, invite more people into the conversation, and change the way we treat each other inside and outside of work. How can and should we talk about the benefits and limitations of steps toward equity and lead with that? Related Resources: What is Allyship? Pepe Le Pew, Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam, even Minnie Mouse-- all impacted by cancel culture. Dave Chappelle, Joe Rogan, Gina Carano, J.K. Rowling – whether an animation character or just simply an animated character, no one's safe. But is it cancel or consequence? And really, how does it impact you, working with and on teams and leading people through change? In this episode Allison and Ren explore cancel culture from a leader's point of view. What are the implications for leading teams and managing conflict, risk taking, and the perceived threat of making a mistake in this new era of communication? As more voices get involved in the conversation, there are going to be that many more colliding perspectives. A good leader considers others' perspectives and makes space for people to make mistakes without fear. So, we're curious and want to explore how leaders can make room for people to learn from their mistakes while also honoring the sentiments of those around them. How can we as leaders balance the benefits and consequences of cancel culture and lead with that? In this episode of Lead With That, Ren and Allison explore what we can learn from the barrier-breaking legacies of Betty White and Sidney Poitier. On December 31st, 2021 actor, comedian, animal rights activist and author Betty White died just weeks before she would have celebrated her 100th birthday on Jan. 17, 2022. Just a week later, the first black man to win an Oscar, an actor that paved the way for underrepresented actors around the globe, Sidney Poitier died at the age of 94, on January 7th, 2022. While their loss is sad, this conversation explores what we can celebrate about their legacies and the powerful leadership lessons they taught throughout their lives. Specifically, we'll explore the things we can learn from Sidney and Betty about inclusion, access, authenticity and what leaders can learn from their experiences. We'll also ask you to consider why we're talking about the importance of authenticity, and what systemic biases exist that you have the power to help dismantle both internally and externally. Join us as we challenge you to make Betty and Sidney's examples catalysts for inclusion and access on your teams and at your organization. Join CCL's Ren Washington and Allison Barr as they explore what we can learn from Colin Powell's legacy and leadership philosophy as he moved from the highest reaches of military leadership to the highest echelons of civilian leadership. In October US General and Statesmen, Colin Powell died due to complications associated with COVID-19. Among his many accolades, he was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989–93) and Secretary of State (2001–05), the first African American to hold either position. And that kind of symbolism was only a glimpse at all he represented. He was the son of immigrant Jamaican parents. He began as a professional soldier with a career that made him a hero in Vietnam and becoming the first Black national security adviser during the end of the Reagan administration. With so much accomplishment and with such proximity to the highest levels of leadership in the world – we explore the characteristics that we associate with his leadership philosophy. Specifically we talk about how Colin Powell's humility and insistence on transforming experiences into growth opportunities contributed to much of his success and appeal as a leader. Join CCL's Ren Washington and Allison Barr as they explore what we can learn about recognizing unconscious bias in the workplace from the way news stories are covered on both social media and mainstream media. By now, you likely know the name of Gabby Petito. Both mainstream media and amateurs on social media have committed hour upon hour to try and find Gabby and raise awareness of her case. The case captured the nation's attention as more details of her disappearance played out on primetime news. Much like the mystery surrounding Gabby's disappearance, there are a lot of factors that play in this story. But for many, this story only highlights what's not covered so compulsively by the media: The disappearance and death of thousands upon thousands of women of color. Today, we want to explore what can be learned from the media coverage of Gabby Petito. We'll look at what parallels exist between this story and our work lives. And we'll talk about what leadership can take away from some of these big and tough reflections. Join CCL's Ren Washington and Allison Barr as they explore a nationwide labor shortage and the rise of hybrid workplaces, uncovering what we can learn about the future of work from both phenomena. In late July, hundreds of union workers belonging to Local 218 in Topeka, Kansas won a big victory over Frito-Lay and so-called suicide shifts. Their 20-day strike shined a spotlight on a broader upswing in strike activity in the United States. In tandem with perceived labor shortages in certain sectors — or a living wage shortage, depending who you ask — it suggests changing employee expectations about the future of work. In other industries, hybrid work is becoming increasingly common, as office workers jump to new roles that offer greater flexibility and many employees refuse to return to the office. Employers, executives, and HR leaders are exploring new options for their teams that might alter the value proposition of work in a trend that could dramatically influence a leader's role within their organization. In this episode, we discuss how a rise in strikes and a perceived labor shortage do and don't overlap with an increase in flexible workplaces, and what leaders today can do to lead with that in mind. Join CCL's Ren Washington and Allison Barr as they explore what we can learn from tennis star Naomi Osaka about the role leaders play in supporting and managing mental health. In June 23-year-old Naomi Osaka, the No. 2 ranked tennis player in women's tennis, withdrew from Wimbledon. This happened in the wake of Osaka withdrawing, in the second round from the French Open in a storm of controversy caused by her decision to skip mandatory post-match news conferences. Osaka revealed she had been dealing with anxiety and depression since taking the spotlight after winning the U.S. Open in 2018, the first of her 4 grand slam titles. The pressure of the media and expectation was causing Osaka to pay a big price. Our collective mental health was thrust into the spotlight during the pandemic, but what happens as we transition to the new hybrid work reality? Let's follow Osaka's example and have an open conversation about the role leaders play in managing and supporting mental health. In this episode we explore how Osaka's acknowledgment of her own anxiety and depression is helping to normalize the conversation around mental health, and what leaders today can do to lead with that. Join CCL's Ren Washington and Allison Barr as they explore what we can learn from the leadership characteristics of New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who currently holds the number 1 spot on Fortune's list of World's Greatest Leaders. This isn't the first time Prime Minister Ardern has made Fortune's Greatest Leaders list, but this is the first time in 2021 that she's been ranked number 1. When Ardern became Prime Minister of New Zealand in 2017 she grabbed international attention for her commitments to national well-being and emphasis on social issues. In 2018, Ardern was the first leader to have a child while in power since Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in 1990. She also holds the illustrious title of being the first leader to go on maternity leave while in office, returning to work six weeks later. She was thrust into the spotlight again after the tragedy in Christchurch in New Zealand during 2019. Ardern is often a polarizing figure, with her stance on gun control, climate change, and push for equitable pay. But after Ardern and her party won a landslide reelection victory in October of 2020, her star power and straight talk cannot be ignored. And likely, shouldn't be. In this episode we explore Ardern's leadership characteristics, examine what makes her such a compelling leader, and how all of us can adopt some of her style to be better leaders ourselves. Join CCL's Ren Washington and Allison Barr as they explore what we can learn about accountability and resilience from the Suez Canal. Something like 90% of the world's goods are transported by sea. About 60% of that includes basically all imported fruits, gadgets, and appliances. As March came to a close, the Ever Given, a container ship almost as long as the Empire State building is tall, ran aground in the Suez Canal. The Suez Canal is the shortest sea link between Asia and Europe and about 30% of the world's container shipping volume transits through the canal. This issue, which piqued the interest of Maritime buffs, quickly became a global concern. At one point, some 400+ ships were stuck waiting to pass through the canal from either side, costing an estimated $9.6 billion a day. That translates to $400 million an hour, or $6.7 million a minute. But now that the ship is free, the problem is over, right? What happened with the Ever Given can be chalked up to basic physics, the massive size of the actual ship, potential human error, and maybe even climate change. But at CCL, we don't only look at the circumstances or the symptoms of a problem, we want to find out the source and the root of issues. So where was leadership during all of this? How did leaders make a difference or contribute to this accident in the first place? How did leadership find the fix? Let's take a look at the lessons in accountability and resilience that we can learn from the Suez Canal and lead with that. Join CCL's Ren Washington and Allison Barr as they investigate what we can learn about how people and organizations react to change by taking a look at the solar energy industry. Solar is officially the cheapest energy in history. According to the International Energy Agency, solar is 20-50% cheaper than traditional energy sources. As solar becomes a profitable way to save our planet it might seem to be the renewable energy of choice. The statistic “20 to 50 percent cheaper” is actually based on a calculus of companies building solar projects, not something that actually translates for consumers or even solar homeowners. All the same, With the new, lowered cost of capital, solar energy's cost per megawatt has fallen almost completely below both gas and coal worldwide. So why aren't we making solar the primary source of energy? As you might imagine, the answer to this is complex and simple, but fortunately for us offers some great insights into why change, both at an individual and organizational level is more difficult than you might think. Let's talk about why, despite its merits, people are resistant adopting to solar energy and lead with that. Join CCL's Ren Washington and Allison Barr as they investigate what we can learn about disruption and transformation from the recent short squeeze orchestrated through the internet. In December, GameStop was trading at a little under $13. At the end of January it was trading at $379 and some change. And at the time of this recording, it is trading at $193. This feels like a lot of disruption. What happened with GameStop is raising interesting questions about culture change. Talk about a David Vs. Goliath situation. A group of subredditors took on the Wall Street Establishment an disrupted the way Wall Street does business, at least for a bit. It got us thinking about disruption and its role in behavior change. Is this kind of disruption the key to changing the way work is done? From a leadership perspective, is harnessing disruption the missing piece of culture change in the workplace? Let's talk about the lessons we can learn from the GameStop headlines and lead with that.
