Can you say “One of the first of two female graduates of the US Army Ranger School and Apache attack helicopter pilot?” Meet this week's Team Never Quit guest, Shaye Haver. From being a cross country runner and soccer player in high school, to Army brat, to following in her dad's footsteps as an Apache helicopter pilot, Shaye and Marcus share an engaging conversation about her influences and accomplishments. In 2016, Shaye and Kristen Griest, who also graduated from the US Army Ranger School were ranked 34th on Fortune magazine's list of the World's Greatest Leaders. In this episode you will hear: I grew up as an Army brat which put me in an environment of serving and sacrifice. My dad always said, “Go do something better than me.” ROTC was the beginning of my understanding that the military was about opportunity. You can make it what you want it to be. Good, better, best – Never let it rest, until your good is better, and your better best. I absolutely don't take no for an answer – especially for myself. I did not go to West Point because of my intellectual prowess. I went on my leadership and physical fitness abilities. Ranger School reminded me that the mission is about the people to the left and right of you. Crisis provides opportunity. The tactic for success I use is to visualize success. The first day one, there was 19 of us; the second day 1, there were 8 of us; the third day one, there were 3 of us. I have had my tab ripped off my shoulder two times. Once by another Ranger. I choose to walk in the responsibility of bearing this thing that I have earned for the duration of my life. You can let it weigh you down, or you can let it inspire you. There's not a quitting bone in my body. The warrior culture is not just for men. Heroes come in the most unlikely boxes. They're all around us and everybody has a story.

In the final episode for this series, we talk to the amazing Rosie Batty AO. Rosie became a household name in Australia for all the wrong reasons. After her beloved son, 11 year old Luke was brutally killed by his father at a cricket game in 2014, Rosie faced the media and in a spell binding delivery sent the nation a message we needed to hear: “Family violence happens to everyone. No matter how nice your house, how intelligent you are. It can happen to anyone and everyone.”Thrown into the spotlight, Rosie tirelessly dedicated herself to raising awareness of Australia's hidden epidemic of violence against women. In 2014 she established the Luke Batty Foundation to assist women and children. She then played a major role in establishing Victoria's Royal Commission into Family Violence, and had a leading hand in the National Plan to Reduce Violence Against Women and their Children. In 2015 Rosie she was named Australian of the Year. At the time she said she was, “the person no one wants to be, the mother who has suffered the insufferable.”Rosie's tireless advocacy has taken her around the nation and to international forums, including the UN. In 2016 she was ranked 33 in a list of the World's Greatest Leaders by Fortune Magazine. In 2019 Rosie was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO).But all this selfless advocacy and passionate effort comes at a cost. In this powerful discussion for our Changemaker series, Rosie opens up about what her life has been like since that fateful day her son was murdered. We discuss the highs and lows, including the painful collapse and eventual closure of the Luke Batty Foundation. But with failure comes wisdom, and in typical Rosie style she is beautifully generous and open in sharing what she has learned. Today, our expert guest is Mick Ebeling, founder and CEO of Not Impossible Labs. Mick has seeded a movement of pragmatic, inspirational innovation as a career producer, filmmaker, and inventor.  He's been named by Fortune Magazine as one of the Top 50 World's Greatest Leaders and is the only person to be honored twice as TIME Magazine's Inventor of the Year. He's also the recipient of The Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Award and listed as one of the World's 50 Most Influential Creative People by Ad Age. Like most good origin stories, a series of coincidences led Mick to his main inspiration for Not Impossible Labs.  A friend convinced him to go to a gallery event; he begrudgingly went. It turned out to be a fundraising event for a graffiti artist, Tony “TEMPT ONE” Kwan, who had ALS. Mick ended up talking to Tony's family, where he realized the event was to help raise money for Tony's hospital bills. Only knowing the imagery of Stephen Hawking when it came to ALS, Mick was surprised to find out how difficult communicating was for Tony, and he promised to himself and Tony's family that he would find a way to get him a communication device.  Better yet, he committed to finding a way to let Tony create art again. With some of the smartest people he knew, they invented an $80 device that allowed Tony to do just that.  It was through that experience that Mick realized what change was possible and within his grasp. He set out to create Not Impossible Labs to start changing the world and inspiring others to do the same. Now, he helps others do what he did – find one person, change their life, and change the world.   The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “Go out and change your world – and the world. That's the first thing, right? Just make a decision, find an absurdity, and go out and change that absurdity and help one person. Full stop. Case closed. Shut the door. Shut the computer. Join CCL's Ren Washington and Allison Barr as they explore what we can learn from the leadership characteristics of New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who currently holds the number 1 spot on Fortune's list of World's Greatest Leaders.  This isn't the first time Prime Minister Ardern has made Fortune's Greatest Leaders list, but this is the first time in 2021 that she's been ranked number 1. When Ardern became Prime Minister of New Zealand in 2017 she grabbed international attention for her commitments to national well-being and emphasis on social issues. In 2018, Ardern was the first leader to have a child while in power since Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in 1990. She also holds the illustrious title of being the first leader to go on maternity leave while in office, returning to work six weeks later.   She was thrust into the spotlight again after the tragedy in Christchurch in New Zealand during 2019. Ardern is often a polarizing figure, with her stance on gun control, climate change, and push for equitable pay. But after Ardern and her party won a landslide reelection victory in October of 2020, her star power and straight talk cannot be ignored. And likely, shouldn't be.  In this episode we explore Ardern's leadership characteristics, examine what makes her such a compelling leader, and how all of us can adopt some of her style to be better leaders ourselves.   Related Resources: The Importance of Empathy in the Workplace: https://www.ccl.org/articles/leading-effectively-articles/empathy-in-the-workplace-a-tool-for-effective-leadership/  Authentic Leadership: What It Is, Why It Matters: https://www.ccl.org/articles/leading-effectively-articles/authenticity-1-idea-3-facts-5-tips/  Why Communication Is So Important for Leaders: https://www.ccl.org/articles/leading-effectively-articles/communication-1-idea-3-facts-5-tips/  Leadership Development: https://www.ccl.org/leadership-challenges/individual-leadership-development-high-potential-employees/  -- About the Center for Creative Leadership: Leadership is all we do. Any time you propose a change that impacts thousands of companies, you're likely to hear complaints. That's what happened when the Nasdaq stock exchange said it wants its listed companies to disclose their board diversity stats. What's more, it wants companies to have at least one woman and at least one individual who identifies as an underrepresented minority or LGBTQ+ on their boards. The proposal is still making its way through the SEC approval process, but Nasdaq's CEO says she's not concerned by the debate surrounding the plan. "This is a significant change to the governance of public companies. And so we like the rigor," Adena Friedman tells Alan Murray and Ellen McGirt in this episode of Leadership Next. This diversity rule would be a first for a major American stock exchange. Pushing for the change placed Friedman - the first woman to lead a major American stock exchange - on Fortune's latest list of the World's Greatest Leaders. Friedman originally joined Nasdaq as an intern in 1993, and was named CEO in 2017.  Tune in for more on the board proposal, her take on the current stock market, and how leadership has changed as a result of the pandemic.

Well you're not alone. In Bounce Back, Andrew talks to prominent Australians about major challenges that have been thrown their way, and how they've overcome these difficulties on the road to success. In this episode Dr. Rochford speaks with Rosie Batty. The loss of a child is every parent's worst fear. That fear became a reality for Rosie Batty. In February 2014 Rosie's Eleven Year-Old Son had just finished cricket practice with his local team at a park on the outskirts of Melbourne when he was brutally murdered by his father.  It was the culmination of years of violence and abuse, most of it directed at Rosie. The day after the horrific attack Rosie spoke out in the media about Family Violence. From that day on, she has been one of the most prominent and successful campaigners on the issue in Australia's history. Rosie played a key role in the establishment of Victoria's landmark Royal Commission into Family Violence. In 2015 she was named Australian of the Year for giving voice to many thousands of survivors who had not been heard, for rising above personal tragedy and the great loss of her son, Luke, jolting Australia into recognising that Family Violence can happen to anyone. On a list that included The Pope, Fortune Magazine named one of it's Top 50 World's Greatest Leaders and she has been inducted into The Victorian Honour Roll of Women. In 2019, Rosie received an Order of Australia. This series will feature some of Australia's most recognised sports men and women, prominent businesspeople and well-known politicians, allowing them to tell their story, in their own words. Bounce Back is about promoting well-being and good mental health, by showing that even in the most difficult of times, there are people who you can turn to for support - whether they're mates, family, colleagues, professionals even your neighbours. It's about how to look after yourself when things are tough, believing in yourself and knowing you can come through it even stronger.  Dr. Andrew Rochford is a proud ambassador for DrinkWise, which is sponsoring this podcast. But that competitive attitude often means that we feel threatened by other women in the workplace and hold each other back rather than lifting each other up. How can we let go of a ‘me versus you' mentality and shift to a collectivist view that benefits us all? How can we be mindful about banding together as women in business? Jessica Higgins is an organizational workplace expert, strategic consultant and author of the new book, 10 Skills for Effective Business Communication. Huffington Post named her one of the Breakthrough Female Founders of 2017, and her work has been published in Entrepreneur, Thrive Global and The Ladders. Higgins holds executive and board positions in companies in the arts, consulting and technology space, and she regularly speaks on issues including women in the workplace, female entrepreneurs and the future of work. She shares the mindset shift that helped her transition from being a fighter to being a leader and what she is doing to mentor other female business leaders and entrepreneurs. Listen in for Higgins' advice around banding together as women and taking on new challenges with confidence.   Key Interview Takeaways Women must break free from the ‘me versus you' mentality. To climb the corporate ladder successfully, female business leaders often live in fight mode. But we cannot achieve equality until we stop competing against each other and shift to a collectivist view. Lift up other women through mentorship. Higgins is working to promote women in business by mentoring other women to develop a leadership presence and supporting fellow female entrepreneurs. Put your hand up. Too many women keep their heads down, believing they are not qualified for a particular role or raise. Higgins argues that no one walks into a new project or position knowing exactly what to do, and our job is to minimize the window of time it takes to ‘fake it until you make it.' While men are taught to build wealth and careers, marketing teaches women to spend money on the products and services that will make us beautiful. Jessica Higgins contends that this messaging actually pits us against success. So, how do we overcome this deep-seated cultural conditioning to develop a mindset of wealth accumulation? How do we learn to look out for ourselves first? Higgins is a researcher, consultant and marketing communications professional who supports business leaders and entrepreneurs in understanding the impacts of emerging cultural trends. Higgins holds executive and board positions in companies in the arts, consulting and technology space, and she is the author of the newly-released book, 10 Skills for Effective Business Communication. Today, Higgins explains how the pursuit of continuous learning contributes to her success. She shares current cultural trends toward cryptocurrency and AI, discussing the small number of women who are adopting these emergent technologies and the complex cultural motives behind our hesitation. Higgins also walks us through the themes of her forthcoming book, discussing the importance of communication skills like listening and empathy in creating influence at scale. Listen in for Higgins' insight on surrounding ourselves with a trustworthy team and developing a mindset of wealth accumulation. Key Interview Takeaways Women are less likely than men to adopt emergent technologies. Cultural trends toward digital currency and artificial intelligence have big implications for the way we work moving forward, yet only 8% of women are using cryptocurrency, for example. Marketing teaches women to spend money. While men are taught to build wealth, advertising encourages women to depart with our money to look pretty. Higgins contends that this pits us against financial freedom and wealth accumulation. Develop a mindset of wealth accumulation. Higgins advocates for women to look out for themselves first, setting intentions and then acting in selfishly as necessary to achieve success. Communication is key in creating influence at scale. To affect true change, business leaders must hone their skills in areas like listening, negotiation and empathy. Make communication as human as possible. Only 8% of the messages we send come from the words themselves, while the rest is communicated by tonality and body language. Surround yourself with people you trust. If we choose to work with someone who is unethical, it's only a matter of time before this will become a point of contention. US pop star Taylor Swift has landed a spot among powerful businessmen and politicians, in a poll of the World's Greatest Leaders. The "Shake It Off" hit maker is the highest-placed woman on this year's list conducted by Fortune.com. It ranks the "extraordinary people" who are "transforming business, government, philanthropy, and so much more".Swift comes in sixth behind Apple CEO Tim Cook at number one, and Chinese President Xi Jinping at number three. Some articles praise the singer, saying "Pop's savviest star has crossed swords with 'Spotify', embraced corporate sponsorship, and moved to secure dozens of trademarks".Swift took a stand against popular music program "Spotify" in November last year, removing all her tracks from the site without prior notice, just days after the release of her latest album "1989".Taylor Swift highest-placed adj. transform vt. The new tech guy has completely transformed our company website. Now it looks so much more professional and presentable. Bravo! cross swords with v. Don't even think about arguing with Professor Smith. You are too inexperienced to cross swords with him. Spotify n. take a stand against v. Don't wait for others to take/make a stand against injustices. If you want to make the world a better place, you need to start with yourself. track n.
