Katie shared her shared her story with us and her struggle with infertility. Stick around for the end of the episode for beautiful wisdom and advice on living a season of waiting and longing. This is the prayer the Sisters pray at the end of the episode that was written by our founder, Blessed James Alberione. “Act of Surrender to the Will of God” My God, I do not know what will happen to me today. I only know that nothing will happen to me that was not foreseen by you and directed to my greater good from all eternity. This is enough for me. I adore your eternal and unfathomable designs. I submit to them with all my heart for love of you. I offer to you the sacrifice of my whole being and join my sacrifice to that of Jesus, my divine Savior. In his name and by his infinite merits, I ask you for patience in my sufferings and perfect submission, so that everything you want or permit to happen will result in your greater glory and my sanctification. Amen. Blessed James Alberione(Prayers of the Pauline Family) Enjoy today's episode! Love your neighbor as yourself Eph 3:16-19 Rooted and established in love 1 John3:11-18 We love one another. Vertical - between you and God 2. Horizontal - between you and the ones close to you. Examples of How JC Loved Mat 4:1-11 Devil tempting him. He loved by speaking the truth to God’s arch-enemy. We're in Ocean City, NJ, this week chatting with Katie Waldow, Director of Youth Ministry at Saint Damien Parish. While it may not be summer yet at the seaside resort, Katie's sunny demeanor, youthful energy and deep spirituality keep Mike and Pete in great spirits, worthy of a mid-July day. The three talk about the benefits and challenges of engaging the young church in a shore town that see's it's population swell from a few 1,000 in the winter to 100,000 in the summer. We also chat about her work in women's ministries and the benefits of a vegan lifestyle.
Television as we know it today is multi-platform, but obviously it wasn't always that way. The early days of TV were very experimental, groundbreaking and sometimes kind of dangerous. Much of television's history was made here in Los Angeles -- as well as some big careers. Joel Tator, who has produced and directed thousands of broadcasts, wrote a book about the history of LA television. Mitch Waldow is the archive manager at KTTV/KCOP and also is a veteran of the Los Angeles broadcast market. Both Joel and Mitch joined me on Olympic & Bundy to share their memories and knowledge about the history of television in LA -- including the first television helicopter, the first big breaking news stories covered on television, the first live coverage of an atomic bomb, the careers of people like Betty White, Lawrence Welk, and more. One of the many takeaways that I had from this conversation is that learning the history about television, including the struggles and difficulties to develop it, really makes you appreciate technology in its current form.
Large-scale assessments such as PISA have profoundly changed the processes of educational policy making. Countries that do well on PISA are turned into reference societies by other countries trying to emulate educational success. My guest today is Florian Waldow, a professor of comparative and international education at Humboldt University in Berlin. One of Florian’s main research interests is the study of educational “borrowing and lending”, particularly the ways in which countries point to experiences from abroad as a way to legitimate policy agendas and how educational “reference societies” are constructed. In today’s show, Florian talks about how the German media has interpreted the PISA success of countries in Scandinavia and Asia. His research shows that reference societies can both be positive and negative — pointing towards education reforms Germany should enact and those it should not. The research discussed in this podcast was published in 2016 in the journal Zeitschrift für Pädagogik. Full Citation: Waldow, F. (2016). Jon Steiert (pronounced STY ERT) knows a thing or two about food ... and weight ... and unhealthy eating. In fact, today's guest (#14) knows a LOT about being fat and out of shape. BACON! BACON! BACON! I mean, who doesn't like bacon? Besides folks who don't eat it for religious reasons and those who are vegan/vegetarian - though I bet some vegetarians make an exception for bacon. In today's episode, #10, I chat with Heather Lauer, about her passion: BACON. I read two magazines cover to cover. Wired (thanks Dad!) and The Costco Connection. Before you laugh about the 2nd one, it's a really good magazine. I mean, really good. Well-written. Interesting. But anyway ... I learned about Heather - and her passion for bacon - thanks to an article in a recent edition of The Costco Connection. WARNING: DO LOT LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE IF YOU ARE HUNGRY! 8 episodes in and already I have my 2nd "McDonald" on the podcast. Today's guest, Loren McDonald, is not related to Tim McDonald (guest #3) is the VP of Industry Relations at Silverpop and can often be found preaching the benefits of email marketing as well as social media and location-based marketing. However, while that's his job - and one he's quite good at - Loren's passion is not what he gets paid to do. Loren's passion is about all things green. More specifically, Loren is passionate about being a change agent and getting people other than tree huggers to "see the light." Loren believes strongly in the need to move away from fossils fuels, supports electric vehicles, and is an advocate for solar power. In case you missed any of the previous episodes, you can catch them here by visiting the Living Your Passion landing page. Are you ready to GO GREEN and SAVE GREEN? During this episode ... Loren shared his passion for alternative energy, solar energy, wind energy, electric vehicles, reducing our use of water, getting restaurants to stop using styrofoam and plastic cups, and more! We talked about Loren's 1994 rejection letter from U.S. Electricar (awesome). Loren shares a story about when he was 19 ... and his brief stint in politics. This, coincidentally, may have been his first foray into "green." Loren forgot to turn off the audio on his alerts (ding!) We talked about Chevy Volts, Teslas, and other EVs! We had a few audio issues - SORRY! More About Loren Tweet on email marketing, retail/ecommerce, mobile, social, marketing automation; VP/evangelist for @Silverpop Find out more on Twitter. Julie Neumark. Episode #7. Boom. When I first asked Julie to be on the podcast, I thought her passion was going to be music. It turns out, her passion is much broader than just music. In fact, music and songwriting/song performing is just a small part of her passion. Julie's "not-so-sexy" (her words) PASSION, in one word: COMMUNICATION. When I asked Julie to expand on her passion, she said she loves "connecting people through communication." In case you missed any of the previous episodes, you can catch them here by visiting the Living Your Passion landing page. Oh, and one more thing. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that picture on the right. It was taken moments after Julie got married to her partner, Holly. Julie confessed that, like both past #LYPPodcast guest Chris Rosati and I, she married up! One more (more) thing. I could not pick my favorite Julie picture. Here are two more I really liked - her Facebook profile picture and an oldie, but a goodie. During this episode ... Julie shares how she started speaking at very very young age. Julie talks about being a communicator since she was a young girl. Julie shared her background on theater and music writing / producing / performing. We talk about why the sound quality of this episode is so kick ass. I once beat today's guest in a footrace outside of Tyler's Taproom in Durham, NC. Shortly after said race (which I won, of course), I pulled my hamstring. Episode 2. Boom. It only took 2 episodes to get a 30-year old, single Mormon living in Salt Lake City, Utah to talk about his passion: Love (of course). I met Nate Bagley in 2010 when we were living in the 801 (Salt Lake City). We were connected via social media and even sat on a panel together at a University of Utah Business School event ... talking about social media. We've stayed in touch over the years via social media* (since my family and I moved to California 2 years ago). *See? Social media can be a great connector! I was thrilled to learn about Nate's Loveumentary project and - as the title of the post and the image on the right indicate - his passion: LOVE. During this episode ... Hello and welcome to Episode 0 of Living Your Passion the podcast where I, DJ Waldow, chat with people who have found their passion and, well, are LIVING it. Wait. Episode 0? Huh? Yup. This 7 minute, 5 second monologue is not a “real” episode. Instead, it’s my one-take recording of what inspired this podcast, what it’s all about, and more. Living Your Passion was born shortly after I quit my job in June of 2014. I left a well-paying job that was in many ways the perfect fit for what I was good at and what I loved. The problem? It’s what I used to love. You see, I was no longer passionate about what I spent 40+ hours of my week doing. And I’m the kind of person who needs to do what they love and love what they do. It was time to rediscover my passion. And while I’m at it, why not chat with folks who have found their passion? To be clear, not everyone is getting paid to do what they love, but they are doing it nonetheless. I’m so excited to share this podcast with you. I pre-recorded several episodes and could not be more excited about the direction the podcast is already going. If you know someone who bleeds passion (or maybe it’s you), please email me at djwaldow@gmail.com. Oh, and if you have a connection to LeBron James, please let me know. I think he’d be a great person to talk to about his passion for basketball. #DeadSerious
Gita Steiner-Khamsi and Florian Waldow are the editors of Policy Borrowing and Lending: World Yearbook of Education 2012 (Routledge, 2012). Dr. Steiner-Khamsi is professor of Comparative and International Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Dr. Waldow is professor of Comparative and International Education at Humboldt University in Berlin. This monograph provides a collection of articles that chronicle policy borrowing, also known as travelling reforms. These policies move across the world, jumping from one country or sector to the next. While the book covers a wide-array of subjects and topics (from a social network analysis of Chinese Republican Era to Japanese domestic policy concerns with PISA results), it has a strong focusing theme, tying each article together through the idea of moving policy and their origins. This book is a staple for international and comparative education, but the fields of history, economics, public policy, and political science are all relied upon throughout the various articles.
