Visit www.drstevenlin.com for this episode and moreVitamin D Deficiency affects nearly every body system. Low vitamin D is a known risk for tooth decay, risk of obesity, and digestive conditions.New evidence is showing the connection between vitamin D and the brain. The mechanism may lie in vitamin D's crucial role in sleep.Studies have found that a deficiency of vitamin D may be associated with an increased risk of sleep disorders, including poor sleep quality, shorter duration of sleep, and daytime sleepiness. One theory is that vitamin D plays a role in regulating circadian rhythms, which could affect sleep-wake cycles. In a meta-analysis examining the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and sleep disorders, the results showed that serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, a marker of vitamin D levels, were inversely associated with an increased risk of sleep disorders.Another systematic review and meta-analysis found that vitamin D supplementation may improve sleep quality and total sleep time, particularly in people with sleep disorders.Stasha Gominak is a neurologist who focusses on the link between sleep quality and vitamin D levels. Dr. Gominak emphasizes the importance of vitamin D in sleep quality and sleep regulation.Low levels or a deficiency of vitamin D can lead to poor sleep quality and various sleep disorders, as well as other significant health issues. Her work suggests that optimizing vitamin D levels may play a role in improving sleep.Dr. Gominak developed a program called RightSleep, which utilizes an educational approach, over-the-counter vitamins, and behavior changes to improve sleep quality and address sleep disorders. To learn more visit https://drgominak.com/Purchase the RightSleep Program here: https://drgominak.com/product/rightsleep-program/

The changed intestinal microbiome. There is a pandemic of the ‘‘wrong” intestinal microbiome, the cause of which is unknown. The current treatments, probiotics and fecal transplant, are intended to provide the ‘‘missing” bacterial species but they are only partially successful. Observations regarding the negative effects of abnormal intestinal flora go far beyond the bowel symptomatology of IBS. There are reports linking the ‘‘wrong” intestinal flora to hypertension, heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, colon cancer, and autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis, asthma, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis, all diseases that also have reported links to sleep disorders. The changed intestinal microbiome has become epidemic in parallel with the epidemic of vitamin (hormone) D deficiency, suggesting that they might be linked.About our guest:Dr. Gominak grew up and attended college in California, moved to Houstonfor medical school at Baylor College of Medicine, where she received an MDdegree in 1983. Why don't the clinical trials agree with the science?During the COVID epidemic “vitamin” D became front-page news. Because low “vitamin” D levels were associated with poor COVID outcomes most of us now recognize that D is not just a ‘'bone vitamin” but plays an important role in many parts of our body, especially our immune systems. This increased interest in D has also revealed an important mismatch between 80 years of scientific study of ‘'hormone'' D and D's use in routine medical practice. Over the last 50 years “vitamin” D deficiency has been shown to be related to numerous chronic illnesses. There are thousands of scientific articles documenting that D is a hormone playing an important role in almost every organ in the human body. Because of these important scientific findings many prospective treatment trials are being performed. These trials are meant to answer a specific question: If hormone D deficiency shows up along with diseases that are common in our human population could giving hormone D help prevent or cure these same diseases? Why have so many of the recent human treatment trials shown negative results? Because of the continued, inappropriate use of the word ‘'vitamin” most of the D treatment trials have been designed as fixed-dose, public-health “vitamin” studies. Because of the way these studies are designed they have consistently reported negative results. Because of these negative trials doctors are currently being advised not to test vitamin D levels or even recommend vitamin D supplementation. She then moves onto vitamin D and the impact it had on her patient's sleep along with other aspects of their lives.***Interestingly, high levels of vitamin D supplementation can lead to deficiencies in other vitamins and nutrients, therefore it's important to counteract these effects with appropriate protocols.***This was a fascinating chat and we're both very excited about doing the second part later next month.

I feel so grateful to have so much space to work in, but I also share this space and rent this space - and I can't close the door - or make a mess and keep it messy. This has been a strange phenomenon for me - to have all this space to manage and use to teach in but not have it be personal space that I don't have to share. I have moved my studio at our campus likely 40 times at least in the past few years - and this particular set up just happened because we converted the actual film studio into a dorm. My actual studio here we rented to another artist. While I am super glad she has it, I don't have it and I miss it. So I am just coming to terms with this feeling - of not having a room that I can mess up and keep messy that no one can come into with a closing door where I can paint and be messy and be a mess. #hotmess seeks room for rent lol. A film set is not a personal studio. This feels important for me to just acknowledge so I can move on. And since we rent the space I try to ‘un-shiloh' it on a regular basis, which again means I am continually moving my personal space and items around. I know, I know many people don't even have one place to paint, so is it really a problem? Get over it I say, but then I am not being honest. I need a big open space and place to work and dream and invent. Because the companies I run and the offerings I create come out of my own mind/heart sacred studio space which is mapped to the physical space where I work things out. So today I am just owning this need for a closing door so I can see what else wants to come forward. To be able to dream into what I would really like. Sometimes I get up really early and go paint in the classroom or the gallery - but I always have to clean it up and make it nice again right away. So am I really asking for a space to be messy? To cry? To experiment while not making product or on the camera? A place I can have a private slumber party? I don't know. I just know that writing this down was important for me. I have so much - I truly do. And something is needed and I am just exploring that. I also feel that sharing it may spark something in you too - about what you need. Even if you can't create it right now - you can make a perfect studio list and honor it. Intentional Creativity is this - being intentional about writing this poem and sharing this and it moves energy - and creates a clearing for something new to emerge. I feel better already. I started writing this in New York and finished it this morning during cafe'. Blessings dear one, and may be get to the studio…Shiloh Sophiap.s. the above film studio photo has a quilt from Sumaiyah and a painting by Sue in it and I am finally making the wall behind my chaise lounge personal with photos. I will not move them….I will learn to occupy in a good way. p.p.s. I am also wondering if my next studio will be around pottery - I have spent years potting in the past and I miss it. Maybe I am seeking something else. Musing on it. Get full access to Tea with the Muse at teawiththemuse.substack.com/subscribe

At our Annual Mental Health Summit, Dr. Gominak shared with us how anxiety, depression, the world epidemic of sleep disorders AND MORE are due to a lack of Vitamins D and B. Imagine a world filled with people pain-free. Mental illness, anxiety, depression and psychosis is a thing of the past. Medical illness is reduced and medication use is minimized. Dr. Gominak believes this saying is a reality, “See your doctor once a year, heal your body every night.” Dr. Gominak also says that autism is linked to insufficient deep sleep and that the global struggle with worsening sleep is linked to reduced sun exposure, says Dr. Gominak. Given back enough time in deep sleep and the necessary raw materials (D and B vitamins) the brain can make up for the deep sleep that it missed and develop normal social skills even into the teens and early 20's. Not a morning person? Dr. Gominak says that's due to your body not getting the correct sleep at night. Presenteeism, Headaches and Your Bottom Line with Dr. Stasha Gominak | In this episode of The Counterfeit Sleep® Podcast, we talk about something all too common: the headache. It's a topic we need to talk about because the negative impact of headache is huge. Now, I don't mean the “Honey, I have a headache” kind of situation, although I'm sure that has huge impact on anyone hearing it. What I mean is headache and the negative impact it has on your bottom line. Recent research out of Portugal concludes: “Headache has a significant economic burden, as measured by work loss costs, in Portugal.” Now let's pick apart that phrase “work loss costs.” Work loss costs can be the result of a variety of factors. One example is an absent employee. When an employee is not at work, his individual productivity is obviously cut by 100%. But what about the more sinister relative of absenteeism…what we call presenteeism? As defined by Harvard Business Review, presenteeism is when your employee is on the job…but not fully functioning. Presenteeism can cut individual productivity by one-third or more. And no matter how present you may be at this particular moment, it's easy to appreciate how a loss of 1/3 of productivity has a significant impact on your bottom line. So what can you do to mitigate the negative impact has on your bottom line? That's what we get into today with our guest, Dr. Stasha Gominak. If her name sounds familiar, you may have heard our scintillating conversation in episode 24 about Vitamin D. If you haven't listened to that episode yet, download it now. We get into critically important information for keeping healthy in times like we finds ourselves now. If Stasha Gominak's name is not familiar, here's the important stuff: Dr. Gominak is a retired neurologist who made a fascinating discovery while treating thousands of patients with neurological illness. She discovered one treatment that helped patients dramatically: improved sleep. And you can bet that headache—and even migraine—was a chief complaint of many of her patients. Lucky for those patients, Dr. Gominak's insights and innovations allowed them to resolve their pain—and regain pleasure and productivity in their lives at home and at work.
