I want you to feel really great as a parent. I want you to get out of mom guilt and instead feel a deep sense of calm. This calm leads to confidence, compassion for your kids, clarity on what you should do, and so many other good things. What I've noticed, though, is that when moms first come to me, they often feel really embarrassed that they are not already calm. This mom feels ashamed that she yelled at her kid or emotionally checked out or was a little bit too physical. She thinks she should know better or that something is wrong with her. Listen to learn:Why it's hard for you to feel calm (and it's totally normal!)How getting calm is like learning to drive a carWhat to do after you lose it on your kidWhy shame is not the way to change your behaviorIf you can relate to that embarrassed mom, I want to tell you that there's nothing wrong with you. Today, I'll help you learn how to feel more calm and less guilt.---------------------------------When You Don't Feel CalmYou're human. You have a human nervous system and stress response. And raising children is stressful. Especially in the first 11 or 12 years, parenting is relentless. The waves keep coming and coming, and it feels like you never get a break.Sometimes, you might be able to catch yourself before you totally lose it on your kid. This is a great time for a Pause Break. When you notice that you're starting to take your feelings out on your child, just stop. Like you're slamming on the brakes. It's going to feel weird and sudden. You can say, “You know what? I love you, but I don't want to yell at you. So I'm gonna go wash my hands.” Then, go and reset. Other times, we don't even realize that we are overwhelmed or frustrated until we find ourselves yelling and losing our sh!t. We act our feelings out on our kid. And then later, we feel really bad about it.The truth is that, eventually, you always regulate yourself (or else you'd still be yelling hours later). Your brain comes back online, and you stop. The goal is to stop earlier and come back to calm more intentionally. How To Get Out of Mom GuiltI see a lot of moms go into self-criticism with thoughts like, “I'm hopeless. I'm not like other moms. I'm not good enough. I'm not cut out for this.”We have this subconscious thought that if we're mean enough to ourselves about how we acted, we can shame ourselves into behaving better. But shame doesn't motivate. Shame creates pain, which just continues the cycle. That's why we don't do it for our kids, and I don't want you to do it to yourself, either. As a woman, and especially as a mom, it is so easy to be so mean to yourself. But all that ends up happening is that you feel really hurt, sad and discouraged, and then you take those feelings into the next encounter with your child. When things escalate and you find yourself yelling before you pause, you don't need to judge yourself for it. Instead, offer yourself the same compassion you offer to others. Just like we teach our kids, your feelings are okay. You might just need new strategies to handle your emotions. What To Do When You Lose Your CoolSelf-compassion is so important after you lose it on your kid. It's time to step back and give yourself a bunch of love. You always have permission to pause. Literally just stop parenting for a moment, and go take care of yourself.Compassion is the way to move towards better behavior. It's a deep understanding of what was happening for you and a validation of that emotion. You can use the Connection Tool on yourself the same way you would use it with your child.Narrate the situation for yourself. Give words to what was so hard.

Ep #77: Today, I want to dive into something that often gets overshadowed in our debt-free journeys—budgeting anxiety and income anxiety. Many believe that once you're debt-free, life becomes a breeze, all rainbows and sunshine. But the reality is, the worry about financial stability doesn't just vanish. Let's break down what budgeting anxiety and income anxiety really mean. It's that uneasy feeling when you're juggling personal finances, stressed about expenses, fearing you won't meet financial goals, or overwhelmed by the complexity of budgeting. On the flip side, income anxiety is the stress tied to the amount and stability of your earnings. It could be the fear of job security, the unpredictability of gig work, or simply not earning enough to cover your essential expenses.Even though my husband and I have been budgeting for ages, have our emergency fund, and all the financial foundations, the worry about tomorrow still lingers. And that's what I want to dig into today because stressing about financial stability, especially in this unpredictable world, is totally relatable. We see people flaunting their fancy lifestyles, but behind those snapshots, we're clueless about their actual financial situation. So, how do we navigate this anxiety and still find happiness without constantly fearing the worst?First things first, we need to acknowledge and understand these anxieties. You're not alone. Once you pinpoint the sources, you can tackle them head-on. Now, when I'm stressed about money, I don't immediately slash my budget. Instead, I make a list of things in my budget that genuinely make me happy—the "spark joy" list. It's liberating because it helps me decide what stays and what goes without feeling deprived. And let me tell you, extreme frugality like turning underwear inside out or reusing cloth toilet paper isn't my style. So, no, I won't be doing that. Instead, I focus on practical strategies. One key tip: make a "not right now" list. Sure, say no to some things, but if you keep saying no without a "not right now" list, you might end up stressed with nothing left that brings you joy.Another crucial move is building your emergency fund. I'm a big fan of Ally Bank—great for setting up multiple buckets for different goals. Start small and gradually increase your emergency fund over time. Now, let's tackle income anxiety and diversify. Having multiple sources of income brings security. It could be freelancing, a side hustle, or investments generating passive income. I often talk about mystery shopping, but it could be anything that fits your lifestyle.Keep building your skills. Stay adaptable in this rapidly changing job market. Continuous learning and staying updated with industry trends enhance your employability, reducing income anxiety.Lastly, seek support. Whether it's a financial advisor, a community like Budget Divas, or attending financial literacy workshops—having a support system makes a significant difference in managing budgeting and income anxiety.Overcoming these anxieties is a journey. It's okay to seek help along the way. Until next time, keep moving forward, Budget DiYou're Invited to a free LIVE training: How To Get Out of Debt Faster With Mystery Shopping. Ep #73: Recently, I had an unexpected adventure in Colorado that I can't wait to share with you. But more importantly, I want to explain why I'm so passionate about budgeting and helping you become debt-free.So, let me start with our impromptu trip to Colorado. It wasn't planned at all. One day, my friend Cindy called and said she was going to Colorado with our friend Christine. Cindy's dream was to learn RVing. I shared that goal of traveling the country in an RV and enjoying every moment.I had a long to-do list, and the practical side of my brain said, "No, Jen, you can't go. Focus on your tasks and plan a better trip next time." But my other side said, "This is an opportunity to get away." A few weeks earlier, I'd received some shocking news that left me rattled. Life and business have their ups and downs, and as they say, life is 50/50 – half good and half bad. When life throws challenges your way, you sometimes just need to get away. After discussing it with my husband, he encouraged me to take the trip. He reminded me to step out of my daily routine, meet people I'd only known virtually, and be present with them. We went on daily hikes, had outdoor barbecues, and stayed in a beautiful RV surrounded by breathtaking Colorado mountains. The core message of this episode is why I'm so passionate about budgeting and helping you become debt-free. When you have money in the bank and a financial plan, you can embrace spontaneous opportunities like this trip without worrying about credit card limits or debt. Here are some tips to get you started on your own debt-free journey:1. **Create a Budget and Debt Payoff Plan:** I know, creating a budget doesn't sound exciting, but when you put everything down on paper, you'll feel energized. No more mental clutter; you'll have a clear plan. Even if your debt seems overwhelming, at least you'll know how to tackle it and potentially increase your income.2. **Build a Savings Fund:** I love using Ally Bank for this. They let you create multiple savings buckets, each with its own goal. For instance, you can have a Christmas fund, a vacation fund, or a clothing fund. This way, you won't have to rely on credit cards when unexpected expenses pop up.3. **Explore Side Gigs:** Find a side gig that aligns with your interests and passions. For me, mystery shopping was a game-changer. It not only accelerated our debt-free journey but also enhanced our lives. With the extra income, we could enjoy life's little pleasures and make memories without breaking the bank. The message is clear: financial freedom and debt reduction don't mean you have to sacrifice all your joys in life. With a budget, a savings fund, and a side gig, you can live your life to the fullest, embrace unexpected adventures, and confidently make choices that align with your dreams and financial goals.Whether it's a spontaneous trip to Colorado or another opportunity that comes your way, remember that financial planning gives you the freedom to say "yes" without hesitation. In my 20s, managing money wisely is crucial for securing a stable financial future. Here are five things I would do with my money during this pivotal decade:Build an Emergency Fund: Prioritize creating an emergency fund.Invest in Self-Improvement: Invest in myself through education and skill development. This could include taking courses, attending workshops, or gaining certifications that can lead to higher earning potential in the future.Budget and Save for Goals: Create a budget to track my spending and ensure I'm saving for both short-term and long-term goals. Impulse Spending: FOMO can lead to impulse spending on things like expensive trips, gadgets, or experiences that you can't afford. This can quickly deplete your savings and put you in financial stress.Travel and Experience: Your 20s are a time to explore, learn, and create memories. While being financially responsible is essential, don't forget to allocate some money to travel and experience the world.Overall, the key in your 20s is to strike a balance between enjoying the present and preparing for the future. This world is within reach, and it starts with understanding and improving your credit. In this episode of the Budget Divas podcast, Rhonda Alexander Monkres, the credit coach and owner of Kūpa'a Consulting Services, discusses the important topic of credit. Rhonda shares valuable insights and tips on maintaining, establishing, and improving credit scores.Rhonda introduces herself as a credit coach based in Maui, with a mission to help Hawai'i residents improve their credit scores and achieve their financial goals. She compares credit scores to adult report cards, ranging from 350 to 850, reflecting creditworthiness. Responsible credit use, keeping balances under control, making payments on time, and managing inquiries are essential practices for demonstrating creditworthiness.Rhonda emphasizes the significance of credit monitoring and explains the difference between FICO and Vantage credit scores. Monitoring credit helps detect unauthorized accounts due to identity theft, and Rhonda provides guidance on reporting and protecting against identity theft.Rhonda illustrates the substantial difference in interest rates for someone with a 500 credit score compared to someone with a 750-800 credit score when applying for loans, such as car loans and home loans. Rhonda offers actionable steps to improve credit, including maintaining low credit card balances, making timely payments, avoiding unnecessary credit inquiries, and becoming an authorized user on an account with excellent payment history.Rhonda's expertise sheds light on the crucial role of credit in financial stability and the steps individuals can take to manage their credit effectively. Ep: #67 In this solo episode, we'll be focusing on one of the biggest budget busters: the grocery budget. Many individuals and families struggle to balance their budget each month, and a significant portion of their expenses is often spent on food.Food is not only essential for nourishment and energy but also plays a significant social role in our lives. We celebrate special occasions, spend time with loved ones, and enjoy potluck dinners or eating out. However, overspending on food can hinder our ability to get out of debt and build wealth. In this episode, hear a powerful example of how using a debt snowball calculator to illustrate how paying extra towards credit card debt can drastically reduce the payoff time. To take control of the food budget and stop overspending, we discuss three key tips:Implement a cooking scheduleTake a monthly inventoryUse mystery shopping to save on foodThese changes will take time and practice, but they will eventually become habits that lead to positive changes in your time management and budget.Remember, one step at a time, you can take control of your food budget and improve your financial situation. Life is an endless series of ups and downs. And, unfortunately, that means that sometimes things just don't go right. Plans get messed up, expectations are dashed, disappointments invade our otherwise happy life.In this episode, I to talk about how to cope with things go wrong. Interestingly, I recorded this for you on the still-hot-heels of a vacation day gone wrong. I invite you to take a journey with me as I rewind and replay my day, and transparently share my thoughts, emotions, and the techniques I employed to help bring myself back down because… well… I was pretty darn angry. Let's go.“Sometimes I'm not ready to move into a better feeling thought. And sometimes there's enough relief in just noticing and knowing that my crappy feelings are coming a hundred percent from my thoughts about the situation, and I know that, and I'm just not ready to change them yet.” – Dr. Sara DillWhat You'll LearnNoticing and labelingSometimes you're just not readyRecognizing true wastes of timeAmplifying only worsens thingsContact Info and Recommended ResourcesPodcast Episodes that pair well with this one:How To Get Out of a FunkFrustration and How to Reduce ItHow (and why) to Transform Any Crisis into a GiftConnect with Sara Dill, MD, The Doctor's CoachI'd love to work with you! Right now, today, in this very instant, your childhood wounds are playing out – in your communication style, in your anxieties, in all your conflicts with friends, family, coworkers, romantic partners, and more. That's how powerful our wounds are. And simply becoming aware of them makes us that much more powerful! So we brought one of NYC's best and brightest LMFTs, Vienna Pharaon, onto the Expanded Podcast to help us do just that. And her new book, The Origins of Wounds, is our new instruction manual. In this episode, Vienna gives us an overview of the book and introduces us to the 5 core wounds that may be running your show. Jess and Vienna talk all things coping strategies, being the black sheep of the family, perfectionism, “unconditional love” that is actually conditional – you know, all the good childhood trauma stuff. But the difference is Vienna cuts through the overwhelming existentialism that comes with the healing journey and gives us the inspiration to start. To continue! To press onwards in this lifetime pursuit of healing for the sake of our own authenticity. We're all on this path together! EPISODE 52 - Our Dad Space Podcast - How To Get Out of Your Own Way and Find Contentment in Your Dad JourneyAs we close off 2022, we are busy closing down our storefront, still working full-time, completing custom orders and saying goodbye to our walk-in retail customers, we wanted to share some of our other podcasts that we do with our UpCycle Canada Family!I Created Dad Space - a podcast for Dads by Dads to encourage men at any stage along their journey to be a better Dad! I would love if you checked out our podcast and subscribe and share it with those you love! This is a sample episode to give you a taste of the show!We will be back together with Jen to talk about all the updates for UpCycle Canada - looking forward to that as well!So here is a summary of the notes from this episode on Dad SpaceDAD SPACE EPISODE 27 - How To Get Out of Your Own Way and Find Contentment in Your Dad JourneyAs a Dad we tend to operate in a provider mode - putting others first, making sure everyone around us is good - but what about us, what if we are not... good. What happens when we "get in the way" of others, we push others hard, maybe too hard. How do we become more mindful of others in our day to day and become aware of moments when putting someone ahead of us and stepping aside can change the course of someone's day - or even their life?!I had one of those days yesterday, I didn't have time to jump into a room I frequent every week, a room on Clubhouse - the social audio app where you can connect with others and speak on hosted "stages" in topics that interest you as a participant. I was busy, I had lots going on that day - no time for Clubhouse - but there was this voice - "You need to be there, you will miss this opportunity, go there now" - but I don't have time, "Go there now" - but the room is almost over, it's too late to jump in on the conversation... "Go there now!" So I did. I joined the room as it was closing, unaware of the topic of the day, I missed all the great speakers, I was as lost as a grade nine student on the first day of classes! With no thought of the result, no consideration really as to if my words mattered in that moment or if they were going to be received, I shared my praise for her instead of me and my thing - I got out of the way. The results were fantastic.I have been mulling this over and sharing this thought with others as we cross paths, they tend to write this down as I shared it with them - so here is my thought for this week, and for you - "If you can't find contentment in the journey, it won't be there to greet you when you arrive" We get in the way by putting ourselves first, even if we are trying to make others around us better - we put great stock in the result, that is where and when we will be content - when I reach this goal, cross that line, hit that target - THEN, and only then will I be content. Through God's faithfulness, Justin overcame life's twists and turns, but learned some difficult lessons along the way. Today, Justin lives in Plainfield with his family, is the co-founder of Agents for Hope, and serves as the Teaching Minister at Mt Gilead Church in Mooresville.

In this episode, Annie Schuessler joins the show and talks about serving others outside of the therapy room. Annie explains what type of people are most likely to start a business outside of therapy, including the person who is on the verge of burnout or the person who is looking to be more creative. There are many ways we can serve others outside of therapy, including coaching, courses, and groups. Stay tuned as Annie dives deep into how we can best be successful when getting outside of the therapy room. Meet Annie Schuessler Annie Schuessler is a business coach and the host of the podcast Rebel Therapist® Podcast. She's been a therapist in private practice for 20 years, and a business coach for over 10 years. With her Rebel Therapist® Programs, she helps therapist entrepreneurs make an impact beyond the therapy room. You can find her resources at rebeltherapist.me. Why We Go Outside of the Therapy Room Annie has noticed a couple of different kinds of types of folks who are drawn to creating a business outside of the therapy room. Someone who is headed to burnout will find other ways to generate income. Most likely, this person is hitting the ceiling in terms of the number of hours they can work. They have built a successful private practice. However, they want to use their time differently, and they want to be able to leverage their time, learning, and experience into something else. The other kind of person may not even have a full practice yet, and they may just be growing their private practice. However, they already see that there's another part of themselves that they want to bring out into the world. Or there's another message they want to bring out into the world. Plus, creativity is a massive value for them. So, from the very beginning, they want to create some programs beyond the therapy room so that they can express their full selves and work with people in these different ways. How To Get Out of the Therapy Room It works when a therapist can create some program that they can get started with quickly. We tend to have these big dreams and these visions of what it could look like, what our empires could look like. People have amazing ideas; the first step is creating something that is done more quickly so that before you have grown an enormous audience, you can start testing a pilot program. When people can start promptly and check something early in the process, Annie sees them getting early wins and being able to move forward as opposed to folks who have this tremendous vision and maybe don't ever figure out how to accomplish it. Starting a Coaching Program Annie says that people are starting with perhaps either a small group coaching program or even a one on one coaching program. Make sure you are creating a separate website. This is going to be an independent business, so that you're not taking any chances with your private practice. Start with one program. It could be one on one coaching where you're walking through people through a process, within a very particular niche and a specific outcome. Or it could be a small group coaching program where you've got three people who you're walking through a process that brings about a profound change in one particular area. Creating a Course Annie sees people growing their businesses into membership communities. It is a beautiful way to bring people together who share a particular problem and who share a specific identity. Plus, it's a way to add value! Also, Annie sees people creating courses. That can be such a rewarding way to bring together a lot of the stuff that you've learned and that you love. However, some people believe that they can create a course, never touch it again, and make a load of money. Annie doesn't see that working except for when it's Oprah. Annie advises people to at least start with a lot of interaction where you're just adding tons of value by actually being with the people who you're serving and then pulling back from there. FINANCIAL ABUSE something that we rarely discuss openly, HOW TO GET OUT & GET HELP Leave. Plan your way slowly or swiftly out of this relationship and leave. Relationships like this can never be trusted to become equitable since so much of it is about power and control. Reach out to trusted friends, relatives or even a local church who many be able to house you until you're able to get on your feet. If vocational training or education is a barrier to getting a job then start going to school online. Skim money from whatever is given to you and save little by little. Every bit adds up. Open a bank account in secret and bank or stash until you're ready to leave. Ask friends and family for donations to this account while noting you will pay them back once you are on your feet. Start a blog and learn how to monetize it. Get a job in secret. For example you can say that you're volunteering and get a PT job walking dogs or babysitting while he is away or working during the day. Or find a position working from home, online. Establish credit. Get a secured card that you keep only at a friend's or family member's house in a locked box. Use it to make purchases while building your credit.
