Dr. Carole Keim MD takes listeners through vaccines in today's episode. She explains everything from how vaccines are created to common myths and misconceptions about them. She then details each baby and childhood vaccine, and what disease each prevents.Dr. Keim breaks down how vaccines work and what criteria they must meet in disease to be effective. She explains the four main types of vaccines and lays each vaccination out in a clear manner, covering what age your baby or child will be when they receive the vaccine and how the immune response works. These vaccines are proven to protect your baby against everything from tetanus to mumps to pertussis and more. This episode will cover: How vaccines workCriteria to create a vaccineThe 4 different types of vaccinesCommon myths or misconceptions about vaccinesSpecific vaccines (all routine childhood vaccines)Total number of vaccinesCommon side effects and red flags, how to treat How vaccines work: 00:44The purpose of vaccines is to trigger an immune response faster and with less harm than the original disease. The immune system is a lot like a microscopic team of superheroes, made up of white blood cells, antibodies, the complement system, and a few others. These superheroes fight villains such as bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. If they cannot fight them fast enough, the villains will multiply and cause symptoms of disease. Vaccines give your superhero team information about what the villains look like, so they can recognize them as soon as they enter the body, and fight them off quicker and easier.Vaccine criteria: 01:26In order to make a vaccine, certain conditions must be metIt has to be effective. We must be able to become immune to the pathogen; diseases like RSV and HFM are ones we can catch multiple times. Chickenpox is one that you become immune to after catching it once. The pathogen must not be able to mutate faster than the vaccine can be given - we do flu boosters annually because the flu virus mutates about that often. HIV and common cold mutate too fast for a vaccine to be developed. The vaccine must be cost-effective; it has to be cheaper to prevent the disease than to treat itThere are 4 main types of vaccines: 02:31Inactivated (killed pathogens)Live attenuated (weakened pathogens)Toxoid (a piece of what's inside the pathogen)mRNA vaccines Inactivated vaccines 03:44Most common typeThe bacteria or viruses in the vaccine are killed, so your immune system can safely learn to recognize the pathogen that it is trying to fight off. These vaccines do not have the potential to cause actual disease. What they do is cause the immune system superheroes to practice fighting the villains, kind of like practicing on dummies, which may cause mild signs of illness - fever, sore muscles, crankiness, or other symptoms. Examples: IPV (polio), HPV (human papillomavirus), HiB (Haemophilus influenzae B), pneumococcus (Streptococcus pneumoniae), meningococcus (Neisseria meningitidis), and Hepatitis A and B vaccines.Live attenuated vaccines 04:02Made from bacteria or viruses that have been exposed to chemicals that make them weaker than the natural or “wild type” bacteria or virus. Since these pathogens are not killed completely, your superheroes aren't just practicing on dummies, they are actually fighting the weakened villains. So it is possible to have symptoms of the disease, but milder. Some people with weakened immune systems may not be able to fight them off, and can get the actual disease. People taking steroid medications or immune suppressants, or who have HIV or other immune deficiencies should consult a doctor about whether it is safe to receive these vaccines. Examples: oral polio vaccine, MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella), Varicella zoster (chickenpox), and rotavirus vaccines.Toxoid vaccines 04:55Made from just part of the pathogen, and protect against the kinds of bacteria that cause symptoms after the toxins inside them are released. These toxin-carrying bacteria are like villains carrying around a bottle of poison, and the toxoid vaccine gives the superheroes the poison to sample and build up resistance to it. Example: DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis).MRNA vaccines 05:23Newest typemRNA is like a copy of instructions. These give your immune system something like a sewing pattern to print out and make the dummies for your body to fightExample: some COVID vaccinesMyths and misconceptions about vaccines: 05:45Many parents have concerns about vaccinating their children. It only takes one serious reaction to call into question the safety of vaccines. And it has been so long since the vaccine-preventable diseases have run rampant that we in the United States don't fully understand the scope of what is being prevented. Here are some of the top concerns that I have heard from parents, and the truth behind them.Aluminum. There is aluminum in vaccines, but the amount is far less than babies get from other sources. The total amount of aluminum that babies get from vaccines in the first 6 months is 4.4mg. Breastfed babies consume 7mg, formula-fed babies consume 38mg, and babies on soy formula consume 114mg of aluminum in the first 6 months of life. Consuming aluminum vs. having it injected in a vaccine looks the same to the body, so the tiny amount of aluminum in vaccines will not harm your babyAntigens. An antigen is any microscopic substance that has the possibility to elicit an immune response. Babies are exposed to over a trillion antigens in the first year that naturally occur in the environment. The entire vaccine series that children receive today contains just over 150 antigens. A young baby's immune system can easily recognize these few antigens and make antibodies to the diseases without getting sick.Autism. It has been proven that vaccines do NOT cause autism. The age that children first start showing signs and can be tested for autism is 15-24 months. This is the same age that children receive booster vaccines, so it is understandable that some parents think they are related. Long-term protection. Vaccines will protect a person for just as long as if they got the original disease. So a person who had chickenpox as a child is just as protected from getting it again as a person who has received the chickenpox vaccine. Some people do not seroconvert (develop antibodies to that disease) - that depends on their immune system and is not a failure of the vaccine itself.Mercury. There used to be a preservative called thimerosal in vaccines. That preservative (which contains mercury) has been removed from all vaccines in the US that children receive. The only vaccine that still contains thimerosal is the adult flu vaccine.Unnatural exposure. Some people worry that getting exposed to a disease through an injection is not the same as getting it “naturally” by being exposed to a sick person. This is not true; any disease will get into your bloodstream, which is where it is recognized by the body, and once in there the body has no idea how it got in. So getting an injection looks exactly the same to your immune system as getting the disease from a sick person.Doctors DO NOT get paid to vaccinate childrenVaccines are NOT a punishment for children who are behaving badlySpecific vaccines: 10:47Hep B - 0, 2, 6 mos. Hepatitis B is a viral infection that can be passed from mom to baby through the placenta or during delivery. 90% of babies born with HepB will develop chronic infection and are at risk of liver cancer later in life.DTaP - 2, 4, 6, 15 mos, 4 years. Tdap - age 11, every 10 years. DTaP has more diphtheria, Tdap has more tetanus. Bacterial infections. Diphtheria causes severe sore throat and enlarged tonsils, and can block the airway from swelling/tonsils being so enlarged. Tetanus makes spores that live in soil; any penetrating wound could have tetanus in it (nail/thumbtack, dog or cat bite) and tetanus is not killed by antibiotics so it must be prevented. Pertussis is whooping cough and causes babies less than a year old to stop breathing. Everyone who takes care of the baby should be current on their TDaP (within 10 years). Polio - 2, 4, 6 mos, 4 years. Polio is a virus that attacks nerves and causes paralysis. Sometimes it's minor, and sometimes it's the diaphragm that's affected and they stop breathing. There is no specific treatment for polio.HiB - 2, 4, 6, 12-18 mos. HiB (haemophilus influenzae B) bacterial infection that affects children less than 5 years, and especially those under 1 year of age. It used to cause severe infections like epiglottitis, sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis. PCV - 2, 4, 6, 12-18 mos. PCV = pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, pneumococcus is another name for streptococcus pneumonia, which is a kind of strep that gets into the bloodstream and causes sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis. PCV has 13 strains of strep in it right now.Rotavirus - 2, 4, 6 mos. Viral infection that causes severe diarrhea and dehydration in babies. Hep A - 12 and 18 mos. Hep A is a type of food poisoning, there's no specific treatment. MMR - 1 and 4 years. Measles causes high fever, rash, and can cause brain damage, hearing loss, and death. Mumps causes parotitis (infection of salivary glands), but in boys also causes orchitis (inflammation of testicles) and can lead to sterility. Rubella is a fever and rash; more dangerous to unborn babies, causes miscarriages and birth defects.VZV - 1 and 4 years. Varicella Zoster virus (chickenpox) causes cold symptoms, fever, and an itchy and painful rash in children, and shingles in adults. VZV in pregnancy causes miscarriages and birth defects.MCV - 11 and 16 years. Meningitis A, C, W, Y are viruses that cause inflammation around the brain that develops quickly and can be fatal. HPV - 11 years. Human papilloma virus causes warts and dysplasia and can lead to cancer of the mouth, throat, anus, cervix, and penis. Currently 9 strains of HPV in the vaccine. Flu: recommended annually COVID: recommendations are still evolvingVaccines that are available but not given routinely: MenB, PPSV23, Dengue, Typhoid, japanese encephalitis, yellow fever, rabiesTotal numbers of vaccines: 22:351 at birth (Hep B)2 mos: DTaP, polio, HiB, Hep B, PCV, rotavirus - 1 or 2 combo vaccines, PCV and rota = 2 or 3 shots plus an oral vaccine4 mos: DTaP, polio, HiB, PCV, rotavirus - 1 combo plus PCV and rota = 2 shots and one oral6 mos: DTaP, polio, HiB, Hep B, PCV, rotavirus - 1 or 2 combo vaccines, PCV and rota = 2 or 3 shots plus an oral vaccine6+ mos: flu vaccine annually12-18 mos: 2 doses Hep A, 1 of DTaP, HiB, PCV, MMR, VZV. 5-7 shots depending on combos.4-6 years: DTaP, polio, MMR, VZV, typically given as 2 combo vaccines11 years: Tdap, MCV, 2 doses HPV16 years: MCV21+ years: Tdap every 10 years; booster if you have a wound and it's been less than 5 years, booster while pregnant9 shots and 3 oral before 1 year of age, 5-7 shots from age 1-2, 2 shots age 4-6, 4 at age 11, 1 at age 16 = 21-23 total shots before adulthood. 18 flu shots. Common vaccine reactions: 23:53Birth: nothing; sometimes redness/swelling2-6 mos: redness and swelling (local reaction), can be as much as the entire thigh and still be considered normal. Low grade fevers.12-18 mos and 4-6 years: muscle soreness, MMR and VZV cause fevers, VZV sometimes causes rash, other vaccines can cause local reactions11yrs: muscle soreness, local reaction with Tdap and MCV, fainting with HPV16 yrs: local reaction from MCVTdap boosters: muscle sorenessFlu, COVID: flu-like symptomsIt is NOT normal to have a body rash or vomiting after vaccines; those are signs of allergyLarge local reactions and muscle soreness can be treated with cool compresses (wet washcloth) and/or acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Fever or flu-like symptoms: acetaminophen or ibuprofenI DON'T recommend pre-medicating your child before vaccinesIf your child has an adverse reaction to a vaccine, you should report it to VAERS (vaccine adverse event reporting system). Remember that VAERS is like Yelp for vaccines, so take that about as seriously as you would a Yelp review. All of this information is also in The Baby Manual book, which is available for purchase. Remember it is always okay to call your doctor or emergency services if you have concerns about your baby's health. GospelJOHN 16:23-2823In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask anything of the Father, he will give it to you in my name. 24Hitherto you have asked nothing in my name; ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. 25"I have said this to you in figures; the hour is coming when I shall no longer speak to you in figures but tell you plainly of the Father. 26In that day you will ask in my name; and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; 27for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from the Father. 28I came from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and going to the Father."

Post Purchase PRO - Profitable Email Marketing For Amazon Sellers
0:06This is the post purchase Pro podcast, episode 22.0:12And our very first year we launched 90 products, did $3 million in sales on Amazon.0:22Shawn Hart here, with Seth Stevens. Welcome to the Post purchase podcast.0:26In this episode, we're going to continue the origin story.0:30When Seth and I first began our Amazon careers, I guess you would call it, back in 2014 and January 2014.0:38The first year, we had a lot of fun.0:41It was a roller coaster ride ups and downs and all around, but we were able to launch 90 products in that first year of Amazon. Now, of course, as you know, not all products were successful.0:55But what I really liked about our strategy back in 20 14 was that we had a wide diversification of product offerings and we would launch products, if you'll remember, until we found an obvious winner.1:10Then we would build a brand around that winter using what we now call creative cloning, which is, You'll find out shortly, But it's how we would take a winter and expanded beyond, you know, to the point where we couldn't get any more low hanging fruit or easy sales. And then we will move on to another one.1:30Yeah, in our very first year, we launched 90 products. I did $3 million in sales on Amazon now.1:36Sean, when we talked to people over the years, it became kind of obvious that we did stuff backwards.1:44And by backwards, I mean, like most sellers that we ran across would pick a product, spend a long time on packaging, spend a long time on branding. Spend the longtime on, ordering, manufacturing, negotiating all of that stuff. And then they would finally do a launch and see if what they had picked out was going to be received by the market.2:06Where we kind of fell into it backwards was, we would pick a product and then launch it immediately just for a test and see if the product that we picked would sell in the market easily. And then if we found that it would, we would call it a winter, and then we would go back and do all that work that a lot of sellers spent a lot of time doing before they even launched. So we had an advantage that we didn't really know that we have that advantage early on, Sean. I mean, we would just find a winter, prove that it could be successful. And then go back and do all the branding work. So we did it backwards from most sellers. So knowing that we launched ...2:48products in year one, well that doesn't really tell the whole story because like you said, Sean, we would only keep the ones that we deemed winners. And then we would build a brand around those winners. So, out of the 90 products, a lot of them we actually, you know, sold out, just quit selling almost immediately.3:09But the core of it is test the product, find an opportunity, then build a brand around the opportunity shaan.3:17Exactly, and you kinda hit the nail on the head there.3:21Reminds me of, you know, whenever we would identify a hot market because of the product launch.3:27For us, it was never, the product was just a means to find the market. Once we find a hot market and a niche on Amazon.3:34Then we would use what I called earlier, creative cloning to take the product that was successful and clone that into multiple iterations. And I'll give you some examples, some of the items that we sold in the beginning set and let me know if you remember, some of these, Remember, the loop band bracelet, making kids where you would take actual tiny rubber bands and use allude to to make bracelets for your f

Jim is from Kenexis. He is an industry veteran working on control systems, safety, and security. Jim was born in Baltimore, Maryland. His dad worked for government contractors, so Jim was taken all over the world as a child. He remembers living in Germany, where his dad was responsible for all the control systems, and targeting mechanisms on cold war nuclear missiles pointed at Russia. His life was a little stressful and strange back then because his family took some weird vacations to places in Switzerland which Jim, only in his fifties, learned were safe houses. Later, when he was in grade school, their family moved back to a small town in Ohio where Jim grew up amongst some interesting people living on the edge of Amish country. After graduating from high school, Jim went to the University of Akron intending to get a double E Degree. He did not do well, unfortunately, and dropped out after three years. He later graduated from the University of New York, with honors, with degrees in computer technology, nuclear technologies, and physics. Then, ten years later, he got an MBA. Jim is a multi-talented individual! What really sets him apart from others is his insatiable curiosity. He is constantly changing and evolving. In this episode, he talks about his career and how the unusual education choices he made early on later influenced his career path. He did not follow the expected order of things, preferring to do it in his own time. Later in his career, he went back and completed much of what had earlier been expected of him. You will not want to miss this episode if you're curious, like Jim, and always striving to grow and develop. Today's readings are from:Acts 1.12-17, 21-26In those days, the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day's journey away; and when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaios and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. All these with one accord devoted themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. In those days Peter stood up among the brethren (the company of persons was in all about a hundred and twenty), and said, "Brethren, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David, concerning Judas who was guide to those who arrested Jesus. For he was numbered among us, and was allotted his share in this ministry. "So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us -- one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection. And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was surnamed Justos, and Matthias. And they prayed and said, "Lord, who knowest the hearts of all men, show which one of these two thou hast chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside, to go to his own place." And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was enrolled with the eleven apostles.Matthew 16.1-6At that time, the Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. He answered them, "When it is evening, you say, 'It will be fair weather; for the sky is red.' And in the morning, 'It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of Jonah." So he left them and departed. When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. Jesus said to them, "Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.New Testament passages are usually from the Holy Cross translation, Brookline, MA. THE WEEK OF PENTECOST - THURSDAYLESSON: ROMANS 7:13-20Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words. Romans 8:26In connection with the Holy Spirit and His work, it is always necessary to maintain a certain reserve, so that we do not approach the Holy Spirit with an importunity that amounts to arrogance and a joyfulness that is almost levity. Some people are so filled with the Spirit that they become secure and imagine themselves to be on the threshold of perfection. A pious Christian is still flesh and blood like other men, except that he deeply deplores his sin and evil lust. He has experiences which he would rather forget. Unbelievers take little account of sin and do not allow it to bother them unduly. The important thing here is not merely the experience of evil lust and fighting against it. We must not allow our feelings and experience to determine the issue. We must not conclude that all is lost because we still feel our sins. We must keep on working at our sins every day of our lives and permit the Holy Spirit to continue His work in us. We must also have the earnest desire to get rid of our sins. This desire never ceases in believers.Such sighs penetrate so deeply that they reach a level where they are beyond words (Romans 8:26). But they have a precious auditor, the Holy Spirit Himself. He can fully appreciate all this sighing and comfort the conscience from which it comes.SL 11:1026 (21)PRAYER: Hear our sighs, O Holy Spirit, Comforter and Counsellor, and keep working on us with Your purposes of grace and salvation, in and through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.Editor's note: No American Edition (AE) equivalent for today's sermon excerpt exists at the time of this publication. THE WEEK OF PENTECOST - MONDAYLESSON: EPHESIANS 2:19-22“When the Counsellor comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness to me.” John 15:26In what way does the Holy Spirit change the heart and make it new? What means does He use to take hold of the heart? He does it by proclaiming and preaching the Lord Jesus Christ, as Christ Himself declares in John's Gospel, “When the Counsellor comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness to me.”We have often heard that this Gospel, which God allows to be preached in the world and proclaimed to everyone, teaches that no one can become righteous before God through the Law, but that the Law only makes the situation worse for every man. Therefore, God sent His beloved Son into the world to die and shed His blood for the world and to demonstrate that men cannot destroy their sins and get rid of them by their own strength and works. For the proclamation of this Gospel, something additional is needed. I do not necessarily believe this Gospel simply by hearing it preached. For this purpose, God has given us the additional gift of His Holy Spirit who impresses this Gospel upon our hearts, so that it sticks to the heart and lives in the heart. In the work of Christ, there is the whole treasure of salvation, but it is not necessarily distributed and applied. If we are to enjoy this treasure, the Holy Spirit must come to us and put this treasure into our hearts and awaken faith in this treasure in our hearts so that it becomes our very own possession. This is the special work of the Holy Spirit.SL. 11:1024 (15-16)PRAYER: Almighty and merciful Lord, in the gifts of Your Holy Spirit You have given us a sure pledge that Christ's work of salvation belongs to us. May Your Holy Spirit always continue to bear witness with our spirit that we are Your children and heirs of Your kingdom, in and through our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.Editor's note: No American Edition (AE) equivalent for today's sermon excerpt exists at the time of this publication. For an alternate English translation of this sermon, see Lenker, Church Postil—Gospels, 3:272-287.
THE WEEK OF ROGATE - TUESDAYLESSON: LUKE 19:1-6Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words. Romans 8:26In our prayers, we must earnestly desire or wish that what we pray for should come to pass. This is what is meant by the word “ask” which Jesus uses in the Gospel. Some have described this as “the ascent of the soul to God.” The heart lifts itself up and soars up to God with a burning desire, and on this basis, it sighs and says, “O that I had this or that!”According to St. Paul, prayer can be a yearning that cannot always be put into actual words. The mouth cannot always express what the heart feels; the yearning of the heart can surpass all our speaking and even thinking (Romans 8:26).When Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus, the possibility of Jesus speaking to him and coming to his house was beyond all his powers of conception. But after this joyful event, he was more than satisfied. His efforts had succeeded beyond his fondest desires. On one occasion, Moses cried out to God, and God said to him, “Why do you cry to me?” (Exodus 14:15). Actually, Moses on this occasion did not utter a word, but deep sighs came from his heart in the hour of need. Such sighs God calls cries.St. Paul also declares that God “is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20). Trials, fear, and distress serve to bring out these sighs. Today we interview journalist Tim Shorrock to talk to us about privatized military intelligence, US counter-insurgency methods and his article in The Baffler called Making COIN: The Modern History of an Unstoppable Bad IdeaExamples of COINTim talks about his Cold-War upbringing in Japan and Korea during the aftermath of World War II, the Korean war and through Vietnam, explaining how it gave him an honest “introduction to American politics and American foreign policy” which led him to a career in freelance journalism with a focus on Asian Studies.Show Notes4:25-8:15Private companies are profiting at every level from military spending. In recent years we have seen an unprecedented merging of the military and private finance, “the integration of national security and business.”“The privatizing of intelligence took off in the 1990’s.”The Peace DividendFollowing the Cold War, as austerity and neoliberal budget-cuts were implemented, a wave of people previously employed in intelligence went on to work in the private sector with government contractors. In the latter years of the Clinton administration, we began to see an increase of private military contractors being used to collect intelligence in places like Bosnia and Serbia.Tim explains that after 9/11, under the false pretense of national security, billions were spent on increased military budgets, making contractors “essential parts of US military and intelligence operations”. As the Bush doctrine continued, the Washington consensus increasingly encouraged “the contracting of strategic operations.”8:15-13:05COINCounter-insurgency methods of the US: “the people become the enemy.”Tim illustrates how a Vietnamese uprising against the US backed Diem dictatorship resulted in massive gains for the National Liberation Front (Viet Cong) and how the liberal Kennedy administration’s “hearts and minds” approach, cloaked in the language of evil, only made the violence worse: “part of the idea began to be to separate the people from the guerillas and they would build these camps for the villagers that became, essentially, concentration camps (strategic hamlets)”Many of these violent counter-insurgency methods being used by the Americans were inherited from British Imperialists who had developed these strategies in earlier suppression campaigns against Communists in Malaya in the 1950’s. THE WEEK OF EPIPHANY IV - SUNDAYLESSON: MATTHEW 8:23-27Why are you afraid, O men of little faith? Matthew 8:26In what does the unbelief of the disciples consist? It sees no more than it feels! Life and safety are no longer in their feelings – there is nothing here but the waves crashing over the ship, and the sea which threatens all kinds of danger and death. While they feel all this, and concern themselves with it unremittingly, the terror, the trembling and the faint-heartedness do not abate. The more they pay attention to all this and feel it, the harder does death and fear drive them on and threaten to engulf them at every moment.Unbelief cannot rid itself of such feelings, and it cannot think otherwise even for a moment. It has nothing at all to which it can cling for comfort. Unbelief can have no peace and quiet even for a moment. This is how things will be also in hell where there is nothing but sheer trembling and terror without end.Had there been real faith among the disciples, they would have put the wind of the waves of the sea out of their minds. Instead of allowing the wind and the storm to claim all their attention, they would have remembered God's might and grace pronounced in His Word. They would have put their trust in them as though they were on a firm rock in the midst of the moving waters, as though the sun was shining brightly and all was peace without any storm at all.SL.XI.498,2-3AE 76,283PRAYER: You know, O God, how often we are beset in this life by various trials and temptations. Strengthen our faith through your means of grace, that we may always emerge from these trials chastened and strengthened, for Christ's sake. Amen.
Fourth Sunday of Advent Sunday, December 20, 2020 Year (cycle): B The Collect: Purify our conscience, Almighty God, by your daily visitation, that your Son Jesus Christ, at his coming, may find in us a mansion prepared for himself; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Old Testament: 2 Samuel 7:1-11, 16 1Now when the king was settled in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him, 2the king said to the prophet Nathan, “See now, I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God stays in a tent.” 3Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that you have in mind; for the Lord is with you.” 4But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: 5Go and tell my servant David: Thus says the Lord: Are you the one to build me a house to live in? 6I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent and a tabernacle. 7Wherever I have moved about among all the people of Israel, did I ever speak a word with any of the tribal leaders of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?” 8Now therefore thus you shall say to my servant David: Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep to be prince over my people Israel;9and I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 10And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may live in their own place, and be disturbed no more; and evildoers shall afflict them no more, as formerly, 11from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house. 16Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me; your throne shall be established forever. Psalm: Canticle 3 or Canticle 15 or Psalm 89:1-4, 19-26 My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; * for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: * the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him * in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, * he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, * and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, * and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel, * for he has remembered his promise of mercy, The promise he made to our fathers, * to Abraham and his children for ever. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. or 1 Your love, O Lord, for ever will I sing; * from age to age my mouth will proclaim your faithfulness. 2 For I am persuaded that your love is established for ever; * you have set your faithfulness firmly in the heavens. 3 "I have made a covenant with my chosen one; * I have sworn an oath to David my servant: 4 'I will establish your line for ever, * and preserve your throne for all generations.'" 19 You spoke once in a vision and said to your faithful people: * "I have set the crown upon a warrior and have exalted one chosen out of the people. 20 I have found David my servant; * with my holy oil have I anointed him. 21 My hand will hold him fast * and my arm will make him strong. 22 No enemy shall deceive him, * nor any wicked man bring him down. 23 I will crush his foes before him * and strike down those who hate him. 24 My faithfulness and love shall be with him, * and he shall be victorious through my Name. 25 I shall make his dominion extend * from the Great Sea to the River. 26 He will say to me, 'You are my Father, * my God, and the rock of my salvation.' Epistle: Romans 16: 25-27 25Now to God who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages 26but is now disclosed, and through the prophetic writings is made known to all the Gentiles, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith— 27to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever! Amen. Gospel: Luke 1:26-38 26In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary. 28And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.”29But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. 33He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” 34Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” 35The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. 36And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. 37For nothing will be impossible with God.” 38Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.
Luke 11Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us,2just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word.3Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,4so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.5In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron.6Both of them were upright in the sight of God, observing all the Lord's commandments and regulations blamelessly.7But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren; and they were both well along in years.8Once when Zechariah's division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,9he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.10And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.11Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.12When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.13But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John.14He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth,15for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth. 16Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God.17And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous--to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."18Zechariah asked the angel, "How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years."19The angel answered, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news.20And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their proper time."21Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple.22When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak.23When his time of service was completed, he returned home.24After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion.25"The Lord has done this for me," she said. "In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people."26In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee,27to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary.28The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you."29Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.30But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God.31You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus.32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,33and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end."34"How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?"35The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/reformedeve/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/reformedeve/support

This dynamic teaching from Paul Gamaliel should help to clarify your identity in Christ Jesus, The Lord. In this series the difference between Kingdom government and religion is explained. God’s kingdom (government) is a much better government than any other form of government in the world today. StrengthGreek word parakletos (par-ak'-lay-tos) also referred to as “Paraclete”a. “'the one who falls down beside us,' that is to say, an individual who upon finding a person collapsed along the road, kneels down beside the victim, cares for his needs, and carries him to safety” b. Ralph M. Riggs says in his book The Spirit Himself: “…Comforter, means more than one who comforts. He is one who walks alongside or is a companion. As Paraclete, the Holy Spirit is one who is ready to provide strength, courage, wisdom, and grace in any form. He supplies all that a loving, capable companion would be asked to supply to satisfy every longing and need of the human heart.”2.
