He had previously played for Emley (twice) and Altrincham, mainly as a defender. He was signed by John Beck, and pitched straight into a survival battle, which the Imps achieved,The following season the big striker became a key part of Beck's team as they pushed up the table, narrowly missing out on the play-offs, and giving Premier League Southampton a scare in the Coca-Cola Cup. A year later, with Alcide scoring 13 goals, the Imps were promoted to the third tier.Colin left for Hull halfway through the 1998/99 season, having made 140 appearances for City, scoring 31 times. In his later years, he played for Cambridge, York, and Exeter, as well as appearing in Europe for TNS. "Dopo un raccolto, ne viene un altro". Disse così, ai funerali dei suoi sette figli, celebrati a guerra finita, Alcide Cervi, il padre dei sette fratelli fucilati dai fascisti a Reggio Emilia. Gelindo, Antenore, Aldo, Ferdinando, Agostino, Ovidio ed Ettore, uccisi ottant'anni fa, il 28 dicembre 1943. La famiglia Cervi, di formazione cattolica, nella cascina che aveva in affitto ai Campi Rossi di Gattatico, nella fertile pianura reggiana, era diventata uno dei punti di riferimento dell'antifascismo nella zona, luogo sicuro per i rifugiati e base per azioni, in collaborazione con i gruppi partigiani locali. E, per queste ragioni, tenuti d'occhio dalla polizia fascista. Insieme al padre, alla madre Genoeffa, alle due sorelle e ai numerosi figli, avevano preso in affitto la grande casa di campagna che oggi è diventata un centro di documentazione che porta avanti lo spirito della Resistenza e i valori della Costituzione. I sette fratelli Cervi, insieme al padre, vennero arrestati il 25 novembre 1943, dopo un conflitto a fuoco con le milizie fasciste. Vennero portati nel carcere dei Servi di Reggio Emilia, mentre il padre Alcide fu trasferito in un'altra prigione della città. Il 28 dicembre, dopo un'azione dei partigiani, le autorità cittadine decisero una rappresaglia. I fratelli, da Gelindo, il più grande che aveva 42 anni, a Ettore, il più piccolo, che ne aveva 22, vennero portati, insieme a Quarto Camurri, arrestato insieme a loro, al poligono di tiro di Reggio Emilia dove vennero fucilati. Disse Alcide Cervi: “mi hanno detto sempre così, nelle commemorazioni: tu sei una quercia che ha cresciuto sette rami, e quelli sono stati falciati, e la quercia non è morta. Va bene, la figura è bella e qualche volta piango, nelle commemorazioni. Ma guardate il seme. Perché la quercia morirà, e non sarà buona nemmeno per il fuoco.
