Streaming real-time data at scale and processing it efficiently is critical to cybersecurity organizations like SecurityScorecard. Jared Smith, Senior Director of Threat Intelligence, and Brandon Brown, Senior Staff Software Engineer, Data Platform at SecurityScorecard, discuss their journey from using RabbitMQ to open-source Apache Kafka® for stream processing. As well as why turning to fully-managed Kafka on Confluent Cloud is the right choice for building real-time data pipelines at scale. SecurityScorecard mines data from dozens of digital sources to discover security risks and flaws with the potential to expose their client' data. This includes scanning and ingesting data from a large number of ports to identify suspicious IP addresses, exposed servers, out-of-date endpoints, malware-infected devices, and other potential cyber threats for more than 12 million companies worldwide. To allow real-time stream processing for the organization, the team moved away from using RabbitMQ to open-source Kafka for processing a massive amount of data in a matter of milliseconds, instead of weeks or months. This makes the detection of a website's security posture risk happen quickly for constantly evolving security threats. The team relied on batch pipelines to push data to and from Amazon S3 as well as expensive REST API based communication carrying data between systems. They also spent significant time and resources on open-source Kafka upgrades on Amazon MSK.Self-maintaining the Kafka infrastructure increased operational overhead with escalating costs. In order to scale faster, govern data better, and ultimately lower the total cost of ownership (TOC), Brandon, lead of the organization's Pipeline team, pivoted towards a fully-managed, cloud-native approach for more scalable streaming data pipelines, and for the development of a new Automatic Vendor Detection (AVD) product. Jared and Brandon continue to leverage the Cloud for use cases including using PostgreSQL and pushing data to downstream systems using CSC connectors, increasing data governance and security for streaming scalability, and more.EPISODE LINKSSecurityScorecard Case StudyBuilding Data Pipelines with Apache Kafka and ConfluentWatch the video version of this podcastKris Jenkins' TwitterStreaming Audio Playlist Join the Confluent CommunityLearn more with Kafka tutorials, resources, and guides at Confluent DeveloperLive demo: Intro to Event-Driven Microservices with ConfluentUse PODCAST100 to get an additional $100 of free Confluent Cloud usage (details)
Amazon MSK Serverless is a cluster type for Amazon MSK that makes it easy for you to run Apache Kafka without having to manage and scale cluster capacity. In this episode, Simon is joined by Nabanita Maji (Sr. Software Engineer, AWS) and Usama Naseem (Sr. Product Manager, AWS) to talk about this new launch that allows you to take advantage of open source Apache Kafka without the operational overhead of managing it yourself. Scaling Apache Kafka® can be tricky, let alone scaling a team. When he was first hired, Domenico Fioravanti of Therapie Clinic was given the challenging task of assembling a sizable tech team from scratch, while simultaneously building a scalable and decoupled architecture from the ground up. In addition, he wanted to deliver value to the company from day one. One way that Domenico ultimately accomplished these goals was by focusing on managed solutions in order to avoid large investments in engineering know-how. Another way was to deliver quickly to production by using the existing knowledge of his team.Domenico's biggest initial priority was to make a real-time reporting dashboard that collated data generated by third-party systems, such as call centers and front-of-house software solutions that managed bookings and transactions. (Before Domenico's arrival, all reporting had been done by aggregating data from different sources through an expensive, manual, error-prone, and slow process—which tended to result in late and incomplete insights.)Establishing an initial stack with AWS and a BI/analytics tool only took a month and required minimal DevOps resources, but Domenico's team ended up wanting to leverage their efforts to free up third-party data for more than just the reporting/data insights use case.So they began considering Apache Kafka® as a central repository for their data. For Kafka itself, they investigated Amazon MSK vs. Confluent, carefully weighing setup and time costs, maintenance costs, limitations, security, availability, risks, migration costs, Kafka updates frequency, observability, and errors and troubleshooting needs.Domenico's team settled on Confluent Cloud and built the following stack:AWS AppSync, a managed GraphQL layer to interact with and abstract third-party APIs (data sources)AWS Lambdas for extracting data and producing to Kafka topicsKafka topics for the raw as well as transformed dataKafka Streams for data transformationKafka Redshift sink connector for loading dataAWS Redshift as the destination cloud data warehouse Looker for business intelligence and big data analytics This stack allowed the company's data to be consumed by multiple teams in a scalable way. Eventually, DynamoDB was added and by the end of a year, along with a scalable architecture, Domenico had successfully grown his staff to 45 members on six teams.EPISODE LINKSConfluent's Data Streaming Platform Can Save Over $2.5M vs. Self-Managing Apache KafkaAccelerate Your Cloud Data Warehouse Migration and Modernization with ConfluentWatch the video version of this podcastKris Jenkins' TwitterStreaming Audio Playlist Join the Confluent CommunityLearn more with Kafka tutorials, resources, and guides at Confluent DeveloperLive demo: Intro to Event-Driven Microservices with ConfluentUse PODCAST100 to get an additional $100 of free Confluent Cloud usage (details)

AWS is fond of saying security is job zero. That means it's nobody in particular's job, which means it falls to the rest of us. Just the news you need to know, none of the fluff.Corey: This episode is sponsored in part by LaunchDarkly. Take a look at what it takes to get your code into production. I'm going to just guess that it's awful because it's always awful. No one loves their deployment process. What if launching new features didn't require you to do a full-on code and possibly infrastructure deploy? What if you could test on a small subset of users and then roll it back immediately if results aren't what you expect? LaunchDarkly does exactly this. To learn more, visit launchdarkly.com and tell them Corey sent you, and watch for the wince.Corey: “Security is Job Zero” according to AWS. Next week I'll have a fair bit on that I suspect, since this week is re:Invent. Let's see what happened before the storm hit.IBM put out its annual Cost of a Data Breach Report which is interesting, but personally I find it genius. This is how you pollute SEO for the search term ‘IBM Data Breach', which is surely just a matter of time if it hasn't already happened.Speaking of, GoDaddy effectively got its ass handed to it in a security breach last week. We found out of course via an SEC filing instead of GoDaddy doing the smart thing and proactively getting in front of it. Apparently they were breached for at least two-and-a-half months, nobody noticed, and 1.2 million people got their admin creds stolen. I can't stress enough that you should not be doing business with GoDaddy. And to complete the trifecta, ‘Millions of Brazilians' is a fun thing to say unless you're talking about who's been victimized by an S3 Bucket Negligence Award; then nobody's having fun at all.The AWS security blog had a few things to say. “You can now securely connect to your Amazon MSK clusters over the internet.” Wait, what? What the hell was going on before? Were you unable to access the clusters over the internet, or were you able to do so but it was insecurely? This is terrifying framing.“AWS Security Profiles: Megan O'Neil, Sr. Security Solutions Architect.” I really dig these! The problem is that the AWS security blog only really seems to put these out around major AWS conferences when there's a bunch of other announcements. I'd love it if more of the AWS blogs would do periodic “The faces, voices, and people that power AWS” profiles because I assure you, most of the people building the magic never take the stage at these conferences. There was another profile of Merritt Baer. Who is a principal in the office of the CISO, and she's an absolute delight. One of these days, post-pandemic, we're going to try and record some kind of video or other, just so we can name it “Quinn and Baer it.”Corey: This episode is sponsored in part by something new. Cloud Academy is a training platform built on two primary goals: having the highest quality content in tech and cloud skills, and building a good community that is rich and full of IT and engineering professionals. You wouldn't think those things go together, but sometimes they do. It's both useful for individuals and large enterprises, but here's what makes this something new—I don't use that term lightly—Cloud Academy invites you to showcase just how good your AWS skills are. For the next four weeks, you'll have a chance to prove yourself. Compete in four unique lab challenges where they'll be awarding more than $2,000 in cash and prizes. I'm not kidding: first place is a thousand bucks. Pre-register for the first challenge now, one that I picked out myself on Amazon SNS image resizing, by visiting cloudacademy.com/corey—C-O-R-E-Y. That's cloudacademy.com/corey. We're going to have some fun with this one.Corey: And of course, “Macie Classic alerts that derive from AWS CloudTrail global service events for AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) and AWS Security Token Service (STS) API calls will be retired (no longer generated) in the us-west-2 (Oregon) AWS Region.” See, that's one of those super important things to know, and I hate how AWS buries it. That said, don't use Macie Classic because it is horrifyingly expensive compared to modern Macie. And from the tools and tricks area, I discovered permissions.cloud last week and it's great. The website uses a variety of information gathered within the IAM dataset and then exposes that information in a clean, easy-to-read format. It's there to provide an alternate community-driven source of truth for AWS identity. It's gorgeous as well, so you know it's not an official AWS product. And that's what happened in AWS security. Thank you for listening. I'll talk to you next week if I survive re:Invent.Corey: Thank you for listening to the AWS Morning Brief: Security Edition with the latest in AWS security that actually matters. Please follow AWS Morning Brief on Apple Podcast, Spotify, Overcast—or wherever the hell it is you find the dulcet tones of my voice—and be sure to sign up for the Last Week in AWS newsletter at lastweekinaws.com.Announcer: This has been a HumblePod production. Stay humble.
This week on The Cloud Pod, Justin is away so the rest of the team has taken the opportunity to throw him under the bus. A big thanks to this week's sponsors: Foghorn Consulting, which provides full-stack cloud solutions with a focus on strategy, planning and execution for enterprises seeking to take advantage of the transformative capabilities of AWS, Google Cloud and Azure. This week's highlights The Pentagon has had enough of the kids fighting so no one gets the toy. Amazon has given developers the happy ending they've always wanted. Google is playing with fire and hopes no one gets burnt. JEDI: Play Nice Pentagon officials are considering pulling the plug on the star-crossed JEDI cloud-computing project. Reminds us of when we were kids and our parents took toys away when we couldn't play nice together. Amazon Web Services: We've Made All the Money AWS announces a price reduction for Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus. That's an awful lot of samples. Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) announces pricing change for VPC Peering. Just get rid of the ridiculous data transfer fees! AWS Organizations launches a new console experience. We're excited to try this out! AWS announces IAM Access Control for Apache Kafka on Amazon MSK. This is great. AWS Systems Manager now includes Incident Manager to resolve IT incidents faster. This might initially fall short of some of the other offerings on the market. AWS Local Zones are now open in Boston, Miami and Houston. They're continuing on the Oracle model of racks in random garages. Amazon now lets you create Microsoft SQL Server Instances of Amazon RDS on AWS Outposts. A big hooray for people using Outposts. Google Cloud Platform: Smells A Bit Google announces Agent Assist for Chat is now in Preview. Hopefully this is better than predictive text, which is often highly inappropriate. Google releases a handy new Google Cloud, AWS and Azure product map. This press release has an Oracle smell about it. Browse and query Google Cloud Spanner databases from Visual Studio Code. We can see this being welcomed by developers. Azure: So Pretty Azure releases a new logo. We think it kind of looks like a Google icon. Multiple new features for Azure VPN Gateway are now generally available. Really great features! Enabling Azure Site Recovery while creating Azure Virtual Machines is now generally available. Something about this feels clunky. The next installment of the low code development series is now available. Spoiler alert: it's not that riveting. TCP Lightning Round Ryan blatantly stole Justin's jokes but still takes this week's point, leaving scores at Justin (7), Ryan (4), Jonathan (7). Goldman Sachs Global Investment Research division provides investment insights and ideas to clients around the world on a 24/7 basis, which requires a highly secure, scalable, and resilient environment. To re-architect its critical research platform to become a cloud-native application, the team developed a hybrid, container-based migration approach using AWS Fargate, Amazon API Gateway, Amazon MSK, and AWS Lambda that is underpinned by a secure sandboxed environment called SkyLab. In this session, learn how Goldman Sachs rapidly scaled its use of containers, changed its culture to embrace experimentation and fast failure, and adopted DevOps capabilities, including infrastructure as code, canary deployment, and zero-production access.
Businesses leverage data-streaming architectures to respond to customers' needs in real time. In this session, we discuss how you can accelerate the development of real-time applications using Amazon MSK. Adobe joins us and shares how it processes over 60 billion messages a day for hundreds of services using Apache Kafka. You learn about the challenges Adobe faces and why it is moving away from managing dozens of Kafka clusters to deploying fully managed Amazon MSK clusters with one click. Hear how this approach integrates multiple solutions built on open-source frameworks like Kubernetes, Spinnaker, and Terraform while handling message routing, advanced QoS, and HTTP clients.

In this messaging themed episode of AWS TechChat, Pete is back, and more so in person. They started the show reminiscing about messaging history, going back, looking at where we came from and how we arrived at the position we are today. More importantly, why do we use messaging and the benefits you can derive in decoupling your architecture. They then pivot to event streams, which cover both Amazon Kinesis and Amazon Managed Streaming for Apache Kafka, (Amazon MSK). They are both designed to process or analyze streaming data for specialized needs. Next, they moved to a more traditional message bus - Amazon Simple Queue Service (SQS) and Amazon MQ (Managed message broker service for ActiveMQ), both a durable pull-based messaging platform. Amazon SQS being lightweight and tightly integrated to the AWS Cloud platform and Amazon MQ supporting a variety of protocols making it a great choice for existing applications that use industry-standard protocols. Finally, they talked about push-based messaging with Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS) and the Message Broker for AWS IoT. Both publish/subscribe (pub/sub) platform that enables you to build fan out architectures with hundreds of thousands to millions of subscribers. You now have more than a hammer to build your applications, Maslow would be proud. The AWS analytics group of services has a lot of members. These are some of the newer offerings from Amazon. However, they are very effective to use in professional development and learning more about your enterprise environment. Amazon Athena Query Data in S3 using SQL. Store your data in S3. Then you can define your schema on top of the data set and run queries. The UI is not very awesome currently, but it is a way to avoid building out a data warehouse for your needs. This serverless query service can get you analytical data back quickly. Better yet, it comes without all of the typical setup. Amazon CloudSearch Managed Search Service. This service provides a way for you to upload data or documents, index them, and provide a search system for that data via HTTP requests. This is flexible and allows you to custom define the indexes. Thus, you can upload almost any document format or data style and utilize the service to handle search requests. Amazon EMR Hosted Hadoop Framework. This service allows you to spin up a Spark or Hadoop system on top of your S3 data lake quickly. It covers the headaches of getting those environments built. Also, it is a cost-effective solution to your data science needs that can scale to avoid over-buying your resources. Amazon Elasticsearch Service Run and Scale Elasticsearch Clusters. ES is a popular open-source search and analytics engine. There are a broad number of uses for this including log file research, stream data analysis, application monitoring, and more. This is quick and easy to set up so you can dive right into the analysis part of your work. The fully managed service has an API and CLI, as you would expect so that you can automate it to your needs. Amazon Kinesis Work with Real-time Streaming Data. This provides a way to analyze video streams in real time and was covered with the media group. We included it in the media episode. Therefore, we will not spend time on it here. Amazon Managed Streaming for Kafka Fully Managed Apache Kafka Service. I must admit that this is not an area where I am solid so it, is best to use Amazon's own words. "Amazon Managed Streaming for Kafka (Amazon MSK) is a fully managed service that makes it easy for you to build and run applications that use Apache Kafka to process streaming data. Amazon MSK provides the control-plane operations and lets you use Apache Kafka data-plane operations, such as those for producing and consuming data. It runs open-source versions of Apache Kafka. This means existing applications, tooling, and plugins from partners and the Apache Kafka community are supported without requiring changes to application code. This release of Amazon MSK supports Apache Kafka version 1.1.1." Amazon Redshift This service provides fast, simple, and cost-effective data warehousing. If you wonder whether there is a fully managed data warehouse solution out there then here is your answer. Redshift is fully managed, scales up to petabytes, and incorporates the security and administration tools you come to expect from AWS. There are some excellent how-to and tutorials to help you get started and maybe even understand warehouses more in general. Amazon Quicksight This is a fast business analytics service. Also known as a fully managed BI solution. It is what you would expect from a BI solution. Therefore, it requires setup and forethought to position your data. Although this is a robust service, expect to spend a few hours (at least) to get going. AWS Data Pipeline Next is an orchestration service for periodic, data-driven workflows. Yes, that is their words, not mine. The AWS Data Pipeline is a web service that helps you reliably move data between different AWS compute and storage services. The scope includes on-premises data sources as well. Therefore, you can schedule moving all of your enterprise data to the proper destinations. All of this includes being able to translate and manipulate it at scale. Once you get to the point of having a lot of data in AWS services such as Amazon S3, Amazon RDS, Amazon DynamoDB, and Amazon EMR, this becomes critical. Thus, while this is not of much use early on, it is essential to running an enterprise. AWS Glue This service helps you prepare and load data. AWS Glue is a fully managed ETL (extract, transform, and load) solution. Therefore, this makes it easy to prepare and load your data no matter the end goal. You can create and run an ETL job with a few clicks in the AWS Management Console. I have not used it beyond simple tests, but this may be your best solution to ETL needs. When you store your data on AWS then why not try out this solution? It catalogs the data and makes it easy to dive right into that ETL process. AWS Lake Formation This is advertised as how to build a secure data lake in days. I find it hard to argue against that claim. We have already seen how well AWS handles storing and cataloging (even indexing) data. Therefore, it makes sense that their data lake tool would extend from those solutions. With data lakes being a sort of new concept you might want to see the latest news and how-tos at this link. https://aws.amazon.com/big-data/datalakes-and-analytics/what-is-a-data-lake/
