Send us a textWeb Crawler DesignsCan a simple idea like building a web crawler teach you the intricacies of system design? Join me, Ben Kitchell, as we uncover this fascinating intersection. Returning from a brief pause, I'm eager to guide you through the essential building blocks of a web crawler, from queuing seed URLs to parsing new links autonomously. These basic functionalities are your gateway to creating a minimum viable product or acing that system design interview. You'll gain insights into potential extensions like scheduled crawling and page prioritization, ensuring a strong foundation for tackling real-world challenges.Managing a billion URLs a month is no small feat, and scaling such a system requires meticulous planning. We'll break down the daunting numbers into digestible pieces, exploring how to efficiently store six petabytes of data annually. By examining different database models, you'll learn how to handle URLs, track visit timestamps, and keep data searchable. The focus is on creating a robust system that not only scales but does so in a way that meets evolving demands without compromising on performance.Navigating the complexities of designing a web crawler means making critical decisions about data storage and system architecture. We'll weigh the benefits of using cloud storage solutions like AWS S3 and Azure Blob Storage against maintaining dedicated servers. Discover the role of REST APIs in seamless user and service interactions, and explore search functionalities using Cassandra, Amazon Athena, or Google's BigQuery. Flexibility and foresight are key as we build systems that adapt to future needs. Thank you for your continued support—let's keep learning and growing on this exciting system design journey together.Support the showDedicated to the memory of Crystal Rose.Email me at LearnSystemDesignPod@gmail.comJoin the free Discord Consider supporting us on PatreonSpecial thanks to Aimless Orbiter for the wonderful music. Please consider giving us a rating on ITunes or wherever you listen to new episodes.

Localizing and personalizing an application is separate from the language used in the interface. Kip Cole explains how the mismatch of computers with the culture of our audience creates friction we may not even be aware of. In fact, our benign app may be unintentionally offensive to millions of people! Kip created the libraries ex_cldr, money and tempo to help Elixir developers localize applications in a culture aware way. What does that mean? It means using minimal information we can infer how names should appear, how numbers are represented, the assumed numeric rounding rules, first day of the week, the calendar being used, and more!

AWS Data Exchange makes it easy to find, subscribe to, and use third-party data in the cloud. Simon speaks with Ravi Tulapati to explore how data providers can now reach new AWS audiences, how analysts, researchers, and other data buyers can easily find and subscribe to data sets, and how the billing and delivery of data is simplified for both groups. Learn how you can use AWS Data Exchange to fuel in-place analytics with AWS services like Amazon Athena, Amazon EMR, and Amazon Redshift. https://aws.amazon.com/data-exchange/
Woot.com designed and developed a data lake as a replacement for their legacy data warehouse to deliver powerful analytics capabilities across multiple business areas. In this session, learn how it used Amazon EMR, Amazon Athena, AWS Glue, and Amazon QuickSight to build an automated process to ingest and centralize data from external and internal sources for immediate analysis.
AWS delivers an integrated suite of services that provides everything needed to quickly and easily build a well-governed data lake with self-serve access to data. In this talk, Rahul Pathak, general manager for Amazon Athena and Amazon EMR, talks about some of the key trends we're seeing and describes how they shape the services AWS offers. Specific trends include the rise of machine-generated data and semi-structured/unstructured data as dominant sources of new data, the move toward serverless, SPI-centric computing, and the growing need for local access to data from users around the world.
AWS Data Exchange makes it easy to find, subscribe to, and use third-party data in the cloud. This session explores how AWS Data Exchange removes the friction of finding, licensing, and using datasets. Without it, you might spend days or weeks licensing data and moving it where you need it to power analytics. Learn to use AWS Data Exchange to fuel in-place analytics with AWS services like Amazon Athena and Amazon QuickSight. For data providers, learn how AWS Data Exchange makes it easy to reach millions of customers migrating to the cloud by removing the need to build and maintain infrastructure for data storage, delivery, billing, and entitling.
Amazon Athena is an interactive query service that makes it easy to analyze data in Amazon S3 using standard SQL. Athena is serverless, so there is no infrastructure to manage, and you pay only for the queries that you run. Learn how customers are using Athena to query their data lakes, enable self-service for analysts and developers, and build applications. We dive deep into the latest improvements and show demos. New Athena users gain an understanding of service capabilities and customer architecture patterns. Existing Athena users gain understanding of recent improvements, including concurrency, performance, and security.
Imagine being tasked with collecting, analyzing, and securing data from hundreds of sources around the world, in multiple cloud and on-premises environments. Toyota Motor North America, along with Booz Allen Hamilton, has created a secure, cloud-native solution to analyze billions of messages per day using AWS Key Management Service (AWS KMS). We discuss how AWS KMS with AWS native services provides granular access and secures corporate assets with data segregation using AWS KMS encryption. Toyota uses AWS Glue, Amazon Athena, and Amazon SageMaker to generate actionable intelligence in its corporate IT and vehicle telematics environments to solve its business and analytics challenges.
At Affirm, data is its greatest asset. Data is used to track how its products are doing, make strategic decisions, fuel machine learning model training, analyze user trends, detect fraud, and generate reports that are required by a variety of customers and regulators. In this session, learn how Affirm uses Amazon EMR, Amazon Redshift, Amazon Redshift Spectrum, Amazon Athena, Amazon Aurora on Amazon RDS, and AWS DMS to support a unified data lake. Do you have lots of data to analyze? Is writing SQL a skill you have? Would you like to analyze massive amounts of data at low cost without capacity planning? In this episode, Simon shares how Amazon Athena can give you options you may not have considered before. Shownotes: Amazon Athena: https://aws.amazon.com/athena Top 10 Performance Tips: https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/big-data/top-10-performance-tuning-tips-for-amazon-athena/ Using CTAS for Performance: https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/big-data/using-ctas-statements-with-amazon-athena-to-reduce-cost-and-improve-performance/
Amazon Athena is an interactive query service that makes it easy to analyze data in Amazon S3 using standard SQL. Athena is serverless, so there is no infrastructure to manage, and you pay only for the queries that you run. In this session, we live demo exciting new capabilities the team have been heads down building. SendGrid, a leader in trusted email delivery, discusses how they used Athena to reinvent a popular feature of their platform.
You've designed and built a well-architected data lake and ingested extreme amounts of structured and unstructured data. Now what? In this session, we explore real-world use cases where data scientists, developers, and researchers have discovered new and valuable ways to extract business insights using advanced analytics and machine learning. We review Amazon S3, Amazon Glacier, and Amazon EFS, the foundation for the analytics clusters and data engines. We also explore analytics tools and databases, including Amazon Redshift, Amazon Athena, Amazon EMR, Amazon QuickSight, Amazon Kinesis, Amazon RDS, and Amazon Aurora; and we review the AWS machine learning portfolio and AI services such as Amazon SageMaker, AWS Deep Learning AMIs, Amazon Rekognition, and Amazon Lex. We discuss how all of these pieces fit together to build intelligent applications.
As data volumes grow and customers store more data on AWS, they often have valuable data that is not easily discoverable and available for analytics. Learn how AWS Glue makes it easy to build and manage enterprise-grade data lakes on Amazon S3. AWS Glue can ingest data from variety of sources into your data lake, clean it, transform it, and automatically register it in the AWS Glue Data Catalog, making data readily available for analytics. Learn how you can set appropriate security policies in the Data Catalog and make data available for a variety of use cases, such as run ad-hoc analytics in Amazon Athena, run queries across your data warehouse and data lake with Amazon Redshift Spectrum, run big data analysis in Amazon EMR, and build machine learning models with Amazon SageMaker and AWS Glue. Additionally, Robinhood will share how they were able to move from a world of data silos to building a robust, petabyte scale data lake on Amazon S3 with AWS Glue. Robinhood is one of the fastest-growing brokerages, serving over five million users with an easy to use investment platform that offers commission-free trading of equities, ETFs, options, and cryptocurrencies. Learn about the design paradigms and tradeoffs that Robinhood made to achieve a cost effective and performant data lake that unifies all data access, analytics, and machine learning use cases.
Flexibility is key when building and scaling a data lake. The analytics solutions you use in the future will almost certainly be different from the ones you use today, and choosing the right storage architecture gives you the agility to quickly experiment and migrate with the latest analytics solutions. In this session, we explore best practices for building a data lake in Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier for leveraging an entire array of AWS, open source, and third-party analytics tools. We explore use cases for traditional analytics tools, including Amazon EMR and AWS Glue, as well as query-in-place tools like Amazon Athena, Amazon Redshift Spectrum, Amazon S3 Select, and Amazon Glacier Select. Increase your organization's agility by diving deep and discovering how Amazon CloudFront integrates with other services to accelerate your DevOps workflows. In this session, which is jointly presented with Realtor.com, we cover four main areas of DevOps with customer success stories. Build: Programmatically launch and configure your CloudFront distributions by using AWS CloudFormation or Terraform templates as infrastructure as code (IaC). Test: Confirm that your updates deliver the intended result with A/B testing before moving all your traffic by using CloudFront and Lambda@Edge. Release: Continuously manage and deploy your application to the Amazon CloudFront Global Edge Network with AWS CodeStar. Monitor: Uncover actionable insights hiding in your CloudFront logs by leveraging Amazon CloudWatch, Amazon Athena, or AWS Marketplace partners for intelligent monitoring and alerting.
Understanding gamer behavior is critical in acquiring, retaining, and monetizing users effectively. The cycle requires constant fine-tuning through expensive and complex live operations to offer fresh, fun, and challenging experiences. In this session, learn how Rovio uses machine learning (ML) to make this process faster, more efficient, and more accurate. Learn how to leverage AWS compute, analytics, and database services, such as Amazon S3, Amazon EC2, Amazon EMR, Amazon Athena, Amazon DynamoDB, and Amazon Redshift, to build an ML workflow that predicts the future interests and behaviors of gamers to better serve your needs and theirs.
Real-time analytics has traditionally been analyzed using batch processing in DWH/Hadoop environments. Common use cases use data lakes, data science, and machine learning (ML). Creating serverless data-driven architecture and serverless streaming solutions with services like Amazon Kinesis, AWS Lambda, and Amazon Athena can solve real-time ingestion, storage, and analytics challenges, and help you focus on application logic without managing infrastructure. In this session, we introduce design patterns, best practices, and share customer journeys from batch to real-time insights in building modern serverless data-driven architecture applications. Hear how Intel built the Intel Pharma Analytics Platform using a serverless architecture. This AI cloud-based offering enables remote monitoring of patients using an array of sensors, wearable devices, and ML algorithms to objectively quantify the impact of interventions and power clinical studies in various therapeutics conditions.
Data lakes are transforming the way enterprises store, analyze, and learn insights from their data. While data lakes are a relatively new concept, many enterprises have already generated significant business value from the insights gleaned. In this session, AWS experts and technology leaders from Sysco, a Fortune 50 company and leader in food distribution and marketing, explain why Sysco decided to evolve its data management capabilities to include data lakes and how they customized them to support diverse querying capabilities and data science use cases. They also discuss how to architect different aspects of a data lake-ingestion from disparate sources, data consumption, and usability layers-and how to track data ingestion and consumption, monitor associated costs, enforce wanted levels of user access, manage data file formats, synchronize production and non-production environments, and maintain data integrity. Services to be discussed include Amazon S3 and S3 Select, Amazon Athena, Amazon EMR, Amazon EC2, and Amazon Redshift Spectrum.
Data and data-based decisions are at the core of everything online brokerage Robinhood does. In this talk, we dive deep into how Robinhood moved from a world where multiple systems grew to create an unwieldy data architecture, and we discuss how the company used AWS tools, such as Amazon S3, Amazon Athena, Amazon EMR, AWS Glue, and Amazon Redshift, to build a robust data lake that can operate on petabyte scale. We also discuss design paradigms and tradeoffs made to achieve a cost-effective and performant cluster that unifies all data access, analytics, and machine learning use cases.

Elasticsearch is a powerful tool for storing and analyzing data, but when using it for logs and other time oriented information it can become problematic to keep all of your history. Chaos Search was started to make it easy for you to keep all of your data and make it usable in S3, so that you can have the best of both worlds. In this episode the CTO, Thomas Hazel, and VP of Product, Pete Cheslock, describe how they have built a platform to let you keep all of your history, save money, and reduce your operational overhead. They also explain some of the types of data that you can use with Chaos Search, how to load it into S3, and when you might want to choose it over Amazon Athena for our serverless data analysis.

Learn how to architect a data lake where different teams within your organization can publish and consume data in a self-service manner. As organizations aim to become more data-driven, data engineering teams have to build architectures that can cater to the needs of diverse users - from developers, to business analysts, to data scientists. Each of these user groups employs different tools, have different data needs and access data in different ways. In this talk, we will dive deep into assembling a data lake using Amazon S3, Amazon Kinesis, Amazon Athena, Amazon EMR, and AWS Glue. The session will feature Mohit Rao, Architect and Integration lead at Atlassian, the maker of products such as JIRA, Confluence, and Stride. First, we will look at a couple of common architectures for building a data lake. Then we will show how Atlassian built a self-service data lake, where any team within the company can publish a dataset to be consumed by a broad set of users.
Learn how Rovio replaced functionalities in their analytics platform provided by a 3rd party vendor in seven weeks with Amazon Athena, Amazon EMR, and Amazon Redshift. In the ever changing world of games, you must stay ahead of trends and understand your customer base's actions. We describe how we built a data lake using AWS services such as Amazon S3, Amazon Athena, and Amazon EMR. As serverless architectures become more popular, customers need a framework of patterns to help them identify how they can leverage AWS to deploy their workloads without managing servers or operating systems. This session describes reusable serverless patterns while considering costs. For each pattern, we provide operational and security best practices and discuss potential pitfalls and nuances. We also discuss the considerations for moving an existing server-based workload to a serverless architecture. The patterns use services like AWS Lambda, Amazon API Gateway, Amazon Kinesis Streams, Amazon Kinesis Analytics, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon S3, AWS Step Functions, AWS Config, AWS X-Ray, and Amazon Athena. This session can help you recognize candidates for serverless architectures in your own organizations and understand areas of potential savings and increased agility. What's new in 2017: using X-Ray in Lambda for tracing and operational insight; a pattern on high performance computing (HPC) using Lambda at scale; how a query can be achieved using Athena; Step Functions as a way to handle orchestration for both the Automation and Batch patterns; a pattern for Security Automation using AWS Config rules to detect and automatically remediate violations of security standards; how to validate API parameters in API Gateway to protect your API back-ends; and a solid focus on CI/CD development pipelines for serverless, which includes testing, deploying, and versioning (SAM tools).
Nowadays, it's common for a web server to be fronted by a global content delivery service, such as Amazon CloudFront, to accelerate delivery of websites, APIs, media content, and other web assets. Website administrators and developers want to generate insights in order to improve website availability through bot detection and mitigation, by optimizing web content based on the devices and browser used, by reducing perceived latency by caching a popular object closer to its viewer, and so on. In this session, we dive deep into building an end-to-end serverless analytics solution to analyze Amazon CloudFront access logs, both at rest and in transit, using Amazon Athena and Amazon Kinesis Analytics, respectively, and we generate visualization insights using Amazon QuickSight. Join a discussion with AWS solution architects to learn more about the various ways to generate insights to improve the overall perceived experience for your website users.
For many securities organizations, post-trade processing is expensive, cumbersome, and time-consuming. This is in part due to the massive volumes of data required for processing a trade and the limited agility of the technology on which many organizations rely today. In order to create efficiencies and move faster, many financial services organizations are working with AWS to implement post-trade solutions built with AWS storage services (Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier) and big data capabilities (Amazon Athena, Amazon EMR, Amazon Redshift, and Amazon QuickSight ). In this session, we walk through a trade capture and regulatory reporting solution that uses the aforementioned AWS services. We also provide guidance around obtaining data-driven insights (from pixels to pictures); bolstering encryption with AWS KMS; and maintaining transparency and control with Amazon CloudWatch and Amazon CloudTrail (which also helps meet SEC Rule 613 that requires the creation of comprehensive consolidated audit trails).
Learn how to build a data lake for analytics in Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier. In this session, we discuss best practices for data curation, normalization, and analysis on Amazon object storage services. We examine ways to reduce or eliminate costly extract, transform, and load (ETL) processes using query-in-place technology, such as Amazon Athena and Amazon Redshift Spectrum. We also review custom analytics integration using Apache Spark, Apache Hive, Presto, and other technologies in Amazon EMR. You'll also get a chance to hear from Airbnb & Viber about their solutions for Big Data analytics using S3 as a data lake.
Amazon S3 & Amazon Glacier provide the durable, scalable, secure and cost-effective storage you need for your data lake. But, as your data lake grows, the resources needed to analyze all the data can become expensive, or queries may take longer than desired. AWS provides query-in-place services like Amazon Athena and Amazon Redshift Spectrum to help you analyze this data easily and more cost-effectively than ever before. In this session, we will talk about how AWS query-in-place services and other tools work with Amazon S3 & Amazon Glacier and the optimizations you can use to analyze and process this data, cheaply and effectively.
