Do you know how to effectively communicate with someone in a higher position, such as your boss, a board, or anyone in a position of authority? Kevin welcomes Melody Wilding, who shares strategies and conversation frameworks to help professionals at all levels navigate complex relationships with their leaders. Melody and Kevin discuss the concept of “managing up”; not as sucking-up or people-pleasing, but to take ownership of your success by fostering productive and respectful relationships with those in charge. They also discuss the critical conversations outlined in her book and dive into three in particular: the boundaries conversation, the feedback conversation, and the styles conversation. Melody emphasizes the "triple win" philosophy, which focuses on finding solutions that benefit you, your boss, and the organization. She offers practical advice for leaders on how to facilitate managing up for their team members, such as asking, "What do you need from me?" And all it really means is that you have a more attuned nervous system that's more responsive to what's going on around you or what's happening within you. They've done MRIs on people that are higher on the sensitivity scale and in the brains of sensitive people, there are centers around processing emotions and thoughts, connecting different ideas, contemplation, concentration, decision making - all of these areas light up more in sensitive people, which indicates that we're not only taking in more information but then we're also synthesizing and thinking about them much more deeply than the other 80% of people.” – Melody Wilding REGISTER FOR THE FREE MOM BRAIN MASTERCLASS – Powerful Strategies for Anxiety, Overwhelm, & Burnout TAKE THE PERSONALITY PATTERN QUIZ! When does deliberation and contemplation turn into overthinking? Melody Wilding is an executive coach, academic and author who argues that we need to be very intentional about how we use our brain power and overthinking problems is unhelpful and draining. She says it is possible to channel sensitivities and fears in order to break free from stress, perfectionism and impostor syndrome. Melody Wilding's book is Trust Yourself: Stop Overthinking and Channel Your Emotions for Success at Work.
Melody Wilding is the author of the book Trust Yourself: Stop Overthinking and Channel Your Emotions for Success at Work. She has been an Executive Coach for ten years now whose specialty caters to highly sensitive and high-achieving individuals; a speaker, a teacher of human behavior at the graduate level, and a writer for a number of leading career websites.Fascinated and extremely observant with the complexity of human behavior, even at a young age, she knew she would grow up to do something in psychology. True enough, she became a therapist at a certain online therapy company. But since that high achieving population, she catered to preferred professional guidance rather than therapy, she eventually shifted into coaching.Highlights: People pleasing tendencies - limit our trajectory because we want to get a consensus from the people around us instead of deciding on our ownBrag file - identify moments of strength where you have made yourself proud; building your muscle for doing wellDiversify your self-esteem - do not rely on your satisfaction from your professional performanceSensitive striver - a high achiever who is highly sensitive; great leader who through great battles; about 20% of the entire populationHonor roll hangover - the endless cycle of perfectionism, people pleasing and over functioningAre you more emotional than most people? Do you usually overthink? Do you need to think through decisions before you act? Do you have the ability to sense other people's feelings? Do you struggle with people pleasing, putting other people's needs before your own? Do you function and the people around you underperform? Do you struggle with burnout? Do you normally have unrealistically high standards? If your answers are yes to most of these questions, chances are you are a sensitive striver. Although it is in reality an advantage, this can cause one a lot of pressure, stress, and a whole lot of negative emotions. If you want to learn more and manage your own sensitivity, Melody's book could help you—------------------------https://linkedin.com/in/melodywildinghttps://instagram.com/melodywildinghttps://www.facebook.com/melodywildinglmswhttps://twitter.com/MelodyWilding—------------------------52 Weeks of Me is hosted by Jacklyn Osborne and Erika Brooks. In this week's episode of the Culture by Design podcast, Timothy R. Clark is joined by Melody Wilding, author of Trust Yourself: Stop Overthinking and Channel Your Emotions for Success at Work. As an executive coach, professor of Human Behavior, licensed social worker, and Harvard Business Review contributor, Melody has lots to say about how burnout, ambition, sensitivity and empathy.
In this Better@Work episode we explore with Melody Wilding how some of us sense and feel more than our colleagues at work and this can actually be a superpower instead of a liability. Being a driven but sensitive individual is an interesting mix. You have all the desire for high achievement and go-getting but can also overthink everything, which slows you down. This overthinking can lead to putting too much pressure on yourself, experiencing imposter syndrome, having trouble “turning off” at the end of the day, overworking, and on your way to burnout. Building on the work of Dr. Elaine Aron around highly sensitive people (HSPs), Melody shares how Sensitive Strivers are high-achievers who are also biologically and genetically different in being more sensitive to emotions and the world around them, because they process information more deeply than others, are often more susceptible to stress, emotional overwhelm, and overthinking. The good news is that sensitivity, combined with a strong desire to be the best version of ourselves, can make Sensitive Strivers powerhouse performers. Melody's research found managers consistently rate people with higher sensitivity as their top contributors. The key is learning to manage your mind and emotional responses in more productive ways. Melody is a Human Behaviour Professor, Executive coach and Author of “Trust Yourself, Stop Overthinking and Channel Your Emotions for Success at Work”, who was recently named one of Business Insiders Most Innovative Coaches. This episode with Melody is insightful and informative in understanding sensitivity, how to harness it and also protect and channel your deep empathy into opportunities. Melody makes this super actionable and practical, and it was a true joy to have this conversation with her. Quick episode breakdown: We learn one in five people are sensitive strivers, how they are highly empathetic and emotionally intelligent and how to identify if you, a friend or a colleague have this super power We discuss how Melody's personal experience of severe burnout inspired her work and research Melody talks us through how we can stop taking work so personally, diversifying your identity for your own psychological safety We outline how to detox ourselves from “Honour Roll Hangover” of Perfectionism, People Pleasing and Over-functioning Melody explains the biological trait of sensitivity, the link to socialisation and imposter syndrome We unpack the guidance on how to counter sensitivity by taking action to build confidence, along with work-place people pleaser solutions of process and structure, strategic silence, celebrating small successes and not putting off life for work that can wait until tomorrow. As far back as she can recall, Melody Wilding remembers feeling different. She was always very observant and tuned into her environment, feeling affected by all the stimuli around her while other kids seemed unfazed by most of it. Melody was an excellent student all the way through to college where she was valedictorian of her class, yet she still felt disconnected most of the time. As a corporate working professional, she pushed herself so hard that in her late 20s she experienced a serious period of burnout. As Melody took the time to recover, she began writing, discovering more about herself and how she could help others who had similar struggles. Today, she is an author, speaker, and coach who helps her clients to deal with their inner critics, overthinking, and impostor syndrome so that they can enjoy life more.
