Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened up 210-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 22,171 on turnover of $6.7-billion N-T. The Taipei City Animal Protection Office says "Lucky" is currently being kept alone to minimize (使降到最低) stress and is looking for owners who have experience with pit bulls. "Lucky" mauled people on two separate occasions, prompting the Taipei City government to fine the owner 200,000 N-T for violating the Animal Protection Act by allowing an aggressive animal out in public place without proper supervision and precautions. Originally, Russian President Vladimir Putin had promised to release 23 prisoners when he spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump about a potential partial ceasefire. There was no immediate comment on the reason the number changed.

One of the most sought-after violists of his generation, Timothy Ridout is appearing this season as soloist with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, amongst many others. He's worked with conductors like Andras Schiff and Christoph Eschenbach, and collaborated with Stephen Isserlis and Joshua Bell. At 27 years of age he's already recorded five albums and featured on countless others. This interview was recorded while Timothy was at his home in London, but he is now in Australia to perform thanks to Musica Viva, along with flautist Adam Walker and harpist Anneleen Lenaerts. In this conversation, Timothy talks about his journey of discovery with this often neglected instrument, his time in the recording studio and collaborating with some of the greats, and shares some lovely musical works which all have stories behind them.
„Piano on the Beach“ könnte man in Anlehnung an die Oper „Einstein on the Beach“ sagen. Manchmal stecken hinter nüchternen Sichtbetonbauten unvermutete Wunderkammern. (um)

Many of Rita's students remember her luminous nature, her laughter and positivity, which is very rare amongst music teachers. Often, too often teacher's authority is based on fear, humiliation and suppression of a student. But how is it related to Rita? In this episode I'll tell you how Rita (probably totally unconsciously) broke a cliché of dominant teaching method and introduced a loving, kind and patient approach. You will also hear various people talk about Rita: amongst them pianist sir Andras Schiff, cellist Steven Isserlis and her students. At the end you'll hear a composition dedicated to Rita by classical pianist and composer Prach Boondiskulchok. Hello and welcome to the heart of the piano podcast where we are exploring the world of piano. In this episode, I'll be bringing you my experience of the 2021 Leeds International Piano Competition, known informally as ‘The Leeds', and exploring some of the wider issues that competition in music brings up. Some of my favourite pianists have been finalists of The Leeds in past years, and in fact the competition was one of the main factors in launching the careers of famous names such as: Murray Perahia, Radu Lupu, Andras Schiff, Mitsuko Uchida, Dmitri Alexeev, Ilya Itin, Artur Pizarro, Kathryn Stott, Noriko Ogawa, Louis Lortie, Boris Berezovsky, Vladimir Ovchinnikov, and many more household names in the world of classical pianists. It seems to come as a huge shock to most people in Leeds that there is a regular local event happening every 3 years that is regarded as one of the most important events in the international world of professional piano- but don't just take my word for it- during the competition I asked some of the competitors why they had entered The Leeds- this is what Alim Beisembayev said who went on to become the winner: Clip And Elizaveta Kliuchereva who was in the semifinals: Clip And Ariel Lanyi who was the 3rd prize winner: Clip And semifinalist Priscilla Navarro: Clip A topic that's bound to come up in a review of a major music competition is about the controversy of whether musicians should take part in competitions and about whether we should take them seriously. There are plenty of people who very rigidly think that competitions for musicians are a very bad thing to be avoided. I personally think they can be a useful challenge for musicians, as long as the challenge is how to be deeply musical under pressure rather than get caught up in being too serious about competition and ego- this is a skill all professional musicians need to learn at some point or another! Ultimately, we can't really say that one amazing musician is better than another one- and personal subjective taste is going to vary enormously. I enjoyed chatting to people sitting near to me at every stage of the competiti...

The pianist Andras Schiff on Schubert: “There is a folk song like simplicity in Schubert’s Music; his music is never crowded. He does not want to impress you or overwhelm you. He tells you a very simple story and invites you by very simple means to come and join him and share his thoughts.” It's hard to describe an hour long piece as simple, but Schiff's description applies to this massive, majestic, and yes, simple(in the best way) symphony. This week, we'll talk all about this mesmerizing symphony.

Tom speaks to Sir Andras Schiff, one of the world's greatest living pianists and also one of the most thoughtful talkers about music. From Hungary but emigrating to Britain as a refugee, he and Tom discuss the changing world and the role of musicians within it, how a concert is more essential than ever and why a whole evening of Brahms is a bad idea. The artist Tom Phillips is a true creative polymath - a painter, gallery curator, singer, quilter, opera composer, set designer and much more. His seminal 1969 opera Irma is all sourced from passages in 'A Humament' - his life's work - and is largely left to the performers to interpret it however they choose. He talks to Tom at his home in Peckham about how he wrote his 'chance opera' and how to decipher the clues found within the libretto. Plus Tom talks to the acclaimed opera director Netia Jones, who is about to stage it in Peckham, about how to start piecing together the puzzle of the opera. The Birmingham Contemporary Music Group are celebrating their 30th birthday and to do so are taking to the city's canals to create a 'Canal Serenade' performed on three narrowboats on the waterways. Tom takes a wander down the Birmingham towpath with BCMG's director Stephan Meier to discover more about the project and meets one of its founders, the cellist Ulrich Heinen, to talk about how the group started. Plus in the week of conductor Simon Rattle taking over at the London Symphony Orchestra, Tom sits down with music journalists Charlotte Higgins and Richard Morrison to ask what he can do for British classical music.

Sue Lawley's guest this week is the pianist Andras Schiff. Born in Hungary, Bartok was the first composer he fell in love with and his music is still a regular part of his repertoire; despite making his fingers bleed. He compares learning a new composition to maturing wine - you can taste it almost immediately but it takes many years to become a vintage performance.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs] Favourite track: String Quintet in C - Second Movement by Franz Schubert Book: Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri Luxury: Piano
