Phosphorus can be extracted and recycled from an unexpected waste stream: Expired Fire Extinguishers! Helias Andriessen, CEO and founder of Phos Cycle, out of the UK, tells us how he used his sustainability knowledge and his biopolymers start-up experience to come up with an innovative way to get phosphate back from fire extinguisher powder and turn it into clean fertilizer. Phos Cycle tackles sustainability by reducing what would otherwise be landfill waste and turns into a high value material. Helias tells us about how Phos Cycle started with an idea, developed through research to a pilot plant, and is now growing to larger scales in the UK. He explains why recycling phosphates is critically important for the phosphorus cycle, for agriculture, and why we all depend on it.
This episode features the host talking about arguments against the existence of the Christian god to the sound of Béla Bartók's Violin Rhapsody No. 1 and Louis Andriessen's Rhapsody for Two Pianos and Orchestra.
Welcome to all listeners both old and new to the podcast! This week I am focusing on music related to the Christian observation of Holy Week: oratorios, motets, cantatas, songs and song cycles, even operas from Renaissance to contemporary, performed by a wide range of singers. Alongside podcast favorites Jennie Tourel, Roberta Alexander, Eugene Holmes, Hugues Cuénod, Mitsuko Shirai, Muriel Smith, and others, I also feature performances by recently departed vocal giants Virginia Zeani and James Bowman (both of whom will be foregrounded in next week's episode), as well as the sublime British mezzo-soprano Diana Montague, who celebrates her birthday this week. We also hear her husband, the magnificent tenor David Rendall, as well as their extraordinarily gifted son, baritone Huw Montague Rendall, whom I was privileged to meet in Berlin this past week. We also hear a variety of settings of the 13th century Stabat Mater text from Giovanni Felice Sances in the 17th century to the more thorny twentieth-century idiom of the Swiss Frank Martin and the African American Julia Perry. Contemplative art songs by Schubert, Wolf, Hindemith, Finzi, and Andriessen round out the episode. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists.

When CJ was last on the show, he mentioned Pocket Card Jockey in passing and Seth was beside himself. How appropriate that CJ makes his triumphant KNW return to talk about exactly that: the horse-racin', solitaire-playin' 3DS game that you probably didn't play and should!

Sunday 11 July 2021: Composer Louis Andriessen remembered by Lyndon Terracini and Damien Ricketson, plus Katia Beaugeais on composing for sax.
Trailblazing composer Louis Andriessen was one of the most influential composers of his generation. Sadly, Andriessen passed away on July 1st of this year. We talked to him in 2014 about his life in music and featured some of his best-known pieces.

Prélude et Valse lente (1886) Marie de Grandval (1828-1907)Marie, Vicomptesse de Grandval, was an accomplished French composer, and a generous supporter of other composers. To avoid scandalizing her titled family she published mostly under pseudonyms and little of her work is now available. She dedicated this Prélude and Slow Waltz to her friend Georges Gillet of the Paris Opera, who was especially renowned for his beautiful tone and expressive playing on the cor Anglais. Grandval's gratitude to her teacher Chopin is made clear when a Mazurka, not a trio, pops up in the middle of her waltz. This modern edition is by Bruce Gbur for Prairie Dawg Press. Variations on a Theme of Joseph Haydn (1968) Hendrik Andriessen (1892-1981) Hendrik Andriessen was a prominent Dutch composer and organist. His family populated the Netherlands with excellent composers and musicians throughout the 20th century. This piece for cor Anglais and piano is based on a clever, syncopated theme from the trio of Haydn's Piano Sonata #26. It retains Haydn's genial spirit while transforming the theme with rhythms and harmonies of his own time. The cartoon is by Gerard Hoffnung.

Ballade (1953) by Hendrik Andriessen (1892-1981)This is our lament for our country and for the black lives we are losing. Ballade commemorates the experience of the Dutch people under German Fascist occupation in World War II, and by extension, all victims of Fascism everywhere. The Nazis murdered three quarters of all Dutch Jews, and hundreds of thousands of Dutch Gypsies, resistance fighters, journalists, artists and the ordinary citizens who tried to protect them. Ballade tells their story without words, first in a traditional Jewish lamentation, then in the sounds of marching troops, aircraft engines, falling bombs, and a funeral march. The Nazis were afraid of this music. They imprisoned its composer, Hendrik Andriessen, and prohibited performing his compositions. We must not tolerate the drift of our country towards Fascism, for this is where it leads. Viva Knight and Ted Rust add our voices to the worldwide protest against the state-sanctioned murder of black people in the United States of America. We say their names:George FloydManuel EllisBreonna TaylorAhmaud ArberyTony McDadeDion Johnson. We deplore the loss of over 100,000 Americans, a disproportionate number of them black, due to our nation's failure to contain the coronavirus pandemic and to tolerate peaceful protest. For white people asking what they can do about racism in America, here is a response from Light Watkins: https://youtu.be/sjhz594Am6gphoto ©Christine Wu, 2020
We all know that there is huge value to be found in asking your clients for feedback. It allows you to put yourself in your clients shoes, and get a better understanding of their experience with your business. Being well aware of this, the recent Value of Advice report from Core Data was undertaken with the goal to understand consumers and their relationship with advisers. Shining a light on the positives of the industry, the survey gives financial advisers an insight into the valuable ways advice changes lives. In this episode, we speak to Alva Devoy from Fidelity, and Jason Andriessen from CoreData. Their recent research surveyed over 2,000 Australian's on their relationships with money, their financial behaviours, and their experience with financial advisers. With a mix of advised and non-advised respondents, the survey provided fascinating insight into the benefits of financial advice, the barriers to entry, and how clients assess the quality of their relationship with their adviser. This episode is stacked with surprising statistics, as well as fascinating insights into the 4 types of client personas, the ‘three Cs' of client values and insights into how you can customise your service offering to suit different types of clients. With such a huge amount of valuable information, you may want to take notes on this episode! Resources: To read the Value of Advice Report, click here. Inga picks up from Episode 4 and talks about many of the issues you need to consider when you start a law firm …. this includes a moderate rant questioning what the Law Society of Ontario won’t allow lawyers to have non-licensees as shareholders. Rants make the episodes more fun, don’t you think?
The Statement of Advice or SOA is a document that outlines recommendations of a financial planner or adviser to a client. Consumers need to understand the processes involved in their finances to make informed decisions. Thus, financial service providers should aim to make this part of the advice process more efficient. In today's episode, we talk about the future of SOA's with CoreData Group's CEO Jason Andriessen and Financial Planning Association of Australia's Head of Policy and Standards Ben Marshan. Together we discuss the digitalisation of the Statement of Advice (SOA) and the mindset shifts needed to understand the concept. We cover all aspects of this process and how it will evolve in 2020 and beyond. If you want to keep up with all these changes coming, then this episode is definitely for you. Tune in to this episode now! About Our Guests: Jason Andriessen is the Managing Director of CoreData Group. His experience in the finance industry spans over 20 years, including advising, marketing, and product management. Through CoreData, a market research and data analytics consulting company, he helps clients turn evidence-based insights into strategies for business growth. Ben Marshan is the Head of Policy and Standards of the Financial Planning Association of Australia. The association, in collaboration with all key stakeholders, strives to advance the financial planning industry to the benefit of Australians. Ben is passionate about turning the complex into something simple and efficient. What is the Future of the Statement of Advice? The Interactive Future of the SOA It focuses on how to help members create advice processes that are more efficient, more engaging, and cheaper. For FPA's report last year, Ben wanted a solution for his frustration regarding the dated practice of using hundreds of pages of SOA to give to clients. Ben's challenge is to deliver advice better and engage consumers through technology without using paper. Putting It Together The pushback they've been receiving from members is concerned with licensing around producing advice digitally. The regulator says it's alright to use pictures, audio, video, and infographics to produce advice digitally. They gathered lawyers, compliance experts, members, fin-tech experts, representatives of consumers, and researchers that concluded nothing is stopping the digital production of advice. The Purpose of the SOA The purpose of the SOA is for financial service providers to communicate important information so that consumers or clients can make informed decisions. It should be focused on the problem the client is seeking to solve. Mindset Shifts There are two camps in the focus group: Some who read the SOA and some who wouldn't read it. The information asymmetry when it comes to advice has never been felt more acutely than it is right now. Through the SOA, financial advisors should be able to empower clients. However, can you do that if your clients are not involved in the advice process? The value a client sees is in conversations with their planner, the relationship, and the outcome—not in the SOA document. Financial planners taught consumers to expect the advice to be a document. Going Digital We're not respecting the clients when we assume they don't want digital. You can get feedback loops and see all the proof points of understanding in the digital world. Industry Standard Practice Compliance The status quo bias: where I am right now is safer than where I'm going to be. It requires a full organisational decision to innovate and do things differently. The code of ethics allows us to challenge assumptions from the compliance team. Different Communication Ways A small percentage of the population enjoys engaging with paper-based documents. Visual cues (images, infographics, videos) tend to be the number one learning predicate. It becomes a barrier to implementation and the right access if your clients don't understand the information. Consumer Testing They tested it with eight typical Australians who had advice in the past, and they loved the digital SOA because it was less daunting and less overwhelming. What the consumers loved the most about it is the ability to comment and highlight particular sentences. Check out the Interactive Guide to the Future of the SOA on the FPA of Australia's website.

For more than thirty years, young composers have traveled to Holland to worship at the altar of Louis Andriessen, perhaps most notably the three composers from the storied collective Bang on a Can. As a result Andriessen, and Bang on a Can themselves, have had an outsize influence on the music of our time. We'll feature Andriessen's work and many of the composers who have made the pilgrimage. Hosted by Seth Boustead Produced by Sarah Zwinklis Music Louis Andriessen Workers Union David Lang Street Steve Reich Music For 18 Musicians Louis Andriessen Hoketus Oscar Bettison O Death – Take leave of carnal vain delight Missy Mazzoli Cathedral City Julia Wolfe Mvmt IV: Flowers Bryce Dressner St. Carolyn By The Sea
Louis Andriessen is one of the most important contemporary composers you’ve (probably) never heard of. His work isn’t widely played because he’s written many pieces for varieties of ensembles that don’t exist. In fact, specially created ensembles have sprung up because of Andriessen’s pieces, including the famous British ensemble, Icebreaker. Guitarist, composer, and co-founder of Liminal Space Contemporary Music Ensemble, George Heathco, teaches us all about Andriessen and his contributions to the alt classical movement. Or indie classical. Or whatever you wanna call it. Music used in this episode includes: Hoketus by Louis Andriessen De Materie by Louis Andriessen (begins with 144 repetitions of same chord) De Staat by Louis Andriessen Yo Shakespeare by Michael Gordon Pierced by David Lang “Bone Chapel” from O Death by Oscar Bettison Audio production from Todd “Twinkles” Hulslander with very marginal oversight from Dacia Clay. PS, One of the images attached to this article is not George Heathco, but his TV doppleganger George from Being Human. Can you tell which is which? One of them loves Twilight. (Apologies, non-specific George!)
Hoera!
Sara Mohr-Pietsch visits the Dutch composer Louis Andriessen in the Amsterdam townhouse he's worked in for over 40 years. In rooms which overlook one of the city's canals, Andriessen tells Sara about the inspiration of the Dutch paintings on his walls, and about the demands of his daily routine.
