In this episode Work Of Wrestling host Tim Kail dives back into a discussion about morality in professional wrestling.  He begins by cautioning listeners and readers from getting caught in the web of analysts who "build monuments to their own intelligence". Then he outlines his basic moral philosophy as good and evil existing as poles on a spectrum. He examines why morally grey characters and even villians are en vogue, why there's still value in characters like John Cena, and ultimately what he hopes to give his readers and listeners. Welcome to Episode #29 of the 90s State of Mind podcast - a collaborative project between 4ever in Electric Dreams and Blue-in-Green:RADIO. This podcast series sees Imran (London, UK) and Rhonda (California, USA) delve into some of their favourite releases from the 90s and for this episode, the pair celebrate the third full-length album from Whitney Houston, 'I'm Your Baby Tonight'. Released on 6th November, 1990, on Arista Records, Houston's third album saw her take a decided shift towards more R&B and swing beat stylings following the mammoth pop success of her previous album 'Whitney'. Working alongside Babyface & LA Reid, Stevie Wonder and Luther Vandross, the album became a global commercial success reaching number three on the Billboard 200, whilst staying inside the top ten of that chart for 22 weeks. The same album topped the Top R&B Albums chart accumulating eight cumulative weeks atop the chart, outperforming the six-week run from her debut. The album spawned six single releases and would top the year-end 1991 lists of Billboard and Cashbox magazine as the top selling R&B album of the year. Imran & Rhonda delve deep into the album's make-up exploring the singles and collaborations and the shift in Whitney's music from the commercial smash that was her second album. Conversation also veers to Houston's incredible successes of the 90s including movies 'The Bodyguard', 'Waiting to Exhale' and 'The Preacher's Wife'. www.4everinelectricdreams.com/ Blue-in-Green:RADIO is a London-based online internet radio station which celebrates 21st century soul, jazz, funk, Latin & hip-hop music. www.blueingreenradio.com TuneIn: bit.ly/2LBK0BD

This week the theme is simple: STAY SCHEMING.  We open with the "Spin That" controversy taking over everybody's timeline — India.Arie's response video, the boycott debate, and why the real issue isn't one song, it's the lack of balance in today's music compared to the 90s. That spirals into booster culture, the underground food stamp economy, and why every good scheme requires patience (looking at you, Brinks truck guy). Then we get into one of the great 90s urban legends: did Toni Braxton really break up the young Dallas Mavericks — Jason Kidd, Jimmy Jackson, and Jamal Mashburn? And was her "Good girls don't kiss and tell" response the greatest album promo scheme ever pulled? (The Secrets album turns 30 this month, so Jimmy Jackson is conveniently telling the story again...) Plus: DJ Jazzy Jeff reveals he mixed Jill Scott's classic albums under the alias "George Glass" — and even won awards under the fake name. We debate who invented the producer tag, break down 9th Wonder's Billboard chart experiment (spoiler: Reasonable Doubt didn't sell in '96 and it's still a classic), and confess which albums our younger selves overrated. Stacy brings a full segment of 90s songs you didn't know were covers — Brian McKnight's "Crazy Love," Maxwell's "Woman's Work," Monica's "Angel of Mine," Xscape's "Who Can I Run To," Whitney's "I Will Always Love You," Destiny's Child's "Emotion," and more that will make you question your whole childhood. We also cover Uncle Luke's run for Congress, Mara Brock Akil asking for $50 MILLION to make the Girlfriends movie, a full turn-by-turn map breakdown of Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Posse on Broadway" (the whole song takes place on like six blocks!), the eternal debate of O-Dog vs. Bishop — psychopath or sociopath? — a 90s streetwear draft (justice for Cross Colours!), and Brian McKnight's truly diabolical Father's Day interview. We close it out with a full track-by-track revisit of Tevin Campbell's "I'm Ready" (1993) — the Babyface heat, the Prince problem, why "Shhh" should have never happened, and our final ratings.

Tim Kail believes in a moral binary undergirding the fabric of the universe. What does this mean for the way we process moral dilemmas, and what can professional wrestling teach us about the world? In this wide-ranging moral conversation, Tim Kail explains why he believes the prevailing arguments for subjectivity represent a manipulative force in the culture, and that we need common, moral anchors to bind society together. He discusses how to process wrongdoers, giving people a chance to make ammends, listening to one's inner most self for guidance, and deciding whether to give artists a second chance. He also explores the real reason babyfaces get bood and heels get cheered in the modern era, and why it has nothing to do with the audience's moral desires.  Get a tee-shirt at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/workofwrestling Subscribe to WOW's Substack at https://workofwrestling.substack.com Thanks for listening!

The BET Awards takeover brought star power and big conversations to the Rickey Smiley Morning Show, led by Gary With Da Tea’s exclusive interviews with Johnny Gill and rising R&B star Tone Stith. Gill reflected on his legendary career while celebrating the release of his new single,“A Dance, A Kiss,” a collaboration produced by Snoop Dogg that he described as one of those rare records that instantly feels special. Recent reports note the song arrived following the success of his Billboard Adult R&B hit “One Night” and serves as a preview of more music and touring plans to come. Meanwhile, Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Tone Stith discussed his journey from writing hits for artists like Chris Brown to stepping into the spotlight with his debut album The Edge, powered by his chart-topping single“Fly,” which recently reached No. 1 on the Adult R&B charts. The show also sparked debate when DaBaby doubled down on his belief that he belongs in the same conversation as Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and J. Cole, boldly declaring himself the best rapper alive while expressing interest in collaborating with hip-hop’s elite. Elsewhere, Dr. MJ Collier’s Wellness Wednesday segment delivered important health advice, urging listeners to prioritize comprehensive physical exams, cancer screenings, cholesterol and thyroid testing, quality sleep, and preventative care. The morning’s entertainment news also highlighted The New York Times’ newly released list of the 30 Greatest Living American Songwriters, which included names such as Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder, Jay-Z, Missy Elliott, Babyface, Lionel Richie, Kendrick Lamar, OutKast, and Taylor Swift, sparking conversation about who deserved a spot on the influential list. Today's guest built an audience of millions before she was old enough to sign a record deal, turned a 30-minute crying freestyle into her debut single, and made one of Gen Z's defining breakup anthems out of a phrase that became its own internet language. But her real story isn't the viral fame or the streams. It's the part that plays like a runaway and teaches like a masterclass: how she left home at 17 to chase music, what it costs to become a person in public, and everything about the business nobody explains until you've already survived it.And The Writer Is... Nessa Barrett! In this episode of And The Writer Is, we go deep on:• Why she ran away from home at 17 — a 4AM ticket, six school bags, cops on her trail — to make music• The truth about "i hope ur miserable until ur dead": she didn't write it, it's not her favorite, and why she sang it anyway• "pain" — the 30-minute freestyle she cried through in the booth that became her first single• Why she can't record with Auto-Tune — and what she learned the first time someone handed her a finished song to cut• Signing to Warner Records on Zoom during Covid — and the messy contract she had to escape first• "All of my confidence comes from my fans" — the performer who still gets embarrassed easily• The childhood trauma and the generational cycle she says she's trying to break• Why she closes her eyes every time she records, and writes a song like she's building a movie• The lowest point of her career — and how prayer, faith, and going back to her core brought her out of it• "I've never loved my music as much as this — and I didn't know it could feel this way"And much more...

It's the part that plays like a rollercoaster and teaches like a masterclass: how she almost quit, what going #1 actually felt like, and everything about the music business nobody explains until you've survived it.The press version skips the touring deficits, the depression at the top, and the moment in an Echo Park apartment when she nearly took a job at Smoothie King. The question underneath everything she says: once you stop chasing the metric and the moment — who do you become? And The Writer Is... Lizzo! In this episode of And The Writer Is, we go deep on:• Why she wanted to quit music the day "Truth Hurts" went #1 — and the 2017 low point that was actually worse• The touring economics no one explains: how you gross $1M and still finish the year in the red• Why the indie grind that built her, in her view, no longer leads to the mainstream• "She stopped giving a fuck about what we wanted" — Beyoncé's self-titled as a blueprint for artistic autonomy• Why she only talks to people who buy her music — and what comment sections do to her nervous system• The bumper-sticker hook theory — why "Truth Hurts" works when it breaks every rule• Writing "About Damn Time": 83 versions of the chorus, and how the simplest line won• Robert Glasper's lesson: there's no such thing as a wrong note• Why good songs don't sound great at first — watching "Good as Hell" go from silly to gospel• "I make whatever the f*** I want" — and why arriving at that sentence took everything before itAnd much more...
