Producer Josh Penn recalls leaving the Obama campaign to try his hand at movie producing, and striking gold with 2012's BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD. Not only was the film nominated for four Oscars, including Best Picture, it grossed nearly 10x its budget at the box office. Not having much film experience served the filmmaking team well because their optimism, ingenuity, and confidence is what lended an air of true grit and authenticity to the film. From writer/director Ben Zeitlin writing a script in two weeks in order to get into the Sundance labs to producers insisting a local baker audition for the co-lead, a series of fortunate events led to the pure magic of the film. It was awesome to welcome on the show Dan Romer, a Emmy award-nominated composer whose film and TV credits include Netflix's MANIAC, and the Oscar-nominated movies BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD and Pixar's Luca. In today's conversation, Dan and I discuss his beginnings as a record producer, later transitioning into film composing. The reasons why, following his work on BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD, he encountered resistance from the industry — and deep-dive into Dan's creative approach to scoring the Oscar-nominated Pixar film LUCA, set in the Italian riviera of the 1950's. All of this… and much more! Thank you to White Bear PR for setting this conversation up. Dan's latest shows include a new season of THE GOOD DOCTOR, currently streaming on Hulu, as well as LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, now on Showtime. THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Our 2012 retrospective is coming to an end this month. Our second to last throwback podcast review is Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln," starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, Hal Holbrook & Tommy Lee Jones. Written by Tony Kushner, the film was a perfect merger of writer, actor, and director coming together to present an iconic figure in American history but finding ways to humanize him and showcase the most important period of his life rather than telling us a traditional biopic. The film received 12 Oscar nominations and won 2, including a third historic Best Actor win for Daniel Day-Lewis. How does the film hold up a decade later? Tune in as we discuss the screenplay, acting by the enormous ensemble, Spielberg's craftsmanship, and more. Joining me for this review, I have Nicole Ackman, Josh Parham, Sara Clements, Dan Bayer & Danilo Castro. You can also check out all of our previous 2012 retrospective reviews for "Zero Dark Thirty," "Skyfall," "Amour," "Beasts Of The Southern Wild," "Django Unchained," "Silver Linings Playbook" & "Life Of Pi" if you have not done so already. Jess Rogers joins The Fifth Dispatch to discuss BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD
Writer/Director Benh Zeitlin speaks to moderator Gregory Ellwood (The Playlist) about his new film WENDY, the seven-years-in-the-making follow-up to his acclaimed 2012 feature BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD. This conversation was recorded at the Landmark in Los Angeles on 2/29/20. The classic story of Peter Pan is wildly reimagined in this ragtag epic from Benh Zeitlin, director of Beasts of the Southern Wild. Lost on a mysterious island where aging and time have come unglued, Wendy (Devin France) must fight to save her family, her freedom, and the joyous spirit of youth from the deadly peril of growing up.
Benh Zeitlin made his feature filmmaking debut 8 years ago with the indie sensation "Beasts Of The Southern Wild," which earned four Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay. Since then, he's been hard at work on his follow up film "Wendy," which is a modern and grounded re-telling of the legend of Peter Pan from the perspective of the character Wendy. Benh was kind enough to talk us through his process of filmmaking, casting the child actors, why it took so long for his sophomore film and more! In episode forty-one of movies imo., Ben, Brandon, and Daniel yell over each other about LEAVE NO TRACE, Debra Granik's long-awaited return to feature filmmaking/the woods. Afterwards they climb up the family tree to discuss three more daddy-daughter stories in Peter Bogdanovich's PAPER MOON, Benh Zeitlan's BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD, and Maren Ade's TONI ERDMANN. Ben has little to say about the Granik but plenty of love for the way screenwriter Lucy Alibar weaves Hushpuppy's childlike perspective into very adult situations throughout BEASTS, Daniel has trouble remembering the name of Dale Dickey's character in WINTER'S BONE, and Brandon solves the lingering mystery of whatever happened to Woman Driver from LEAN ON PETE. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and the Camera d'Or at the 2012 Cannes International Film Festival, BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD exists entirely in its own universe: mythological, anthropological, folkloric and apocalyptic. “This movie is a blast of sheer, improbable joy, a boisterous, thrilling action movie with a protagonist who can hold her own alongside Katniss Everdeen, Princess Merida and the other brave young heroines of 2012.” New York Times Film co-producer Matthew Parker will be joining us to chat about this internationally acclaimed awarding winning film. Don't miss it!
Travis sits down with director Ben Zeitlan and two of the stars from the movie, Dwight Henry and Quevenzahane Willis, that has been buzzing all over the festival circuit and is sure to be a water cooler favorite this year 'Beasts of the Southern WIld'. This one is a must listen!
As we enter into the thick of the summer movie season, we'll be talking three films that are highly anticipated for very different reasons. Marc Webb and Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man reboot has been the source of much controversy, but did they make the right move in starting over? Or did they make a very expensive, high profile mistake? Plus, Oliver Stone returns to his gritty roots with the star-studded crime flick, Savages. Beasts of the Southern Wild has taken the festival circuit by storm, but will the film capture hearts and minds now that it's in theaters? All this, plus our usual mix of box office and movie news, DVD releases, and whatever else springs to mind. Join us for an earlier edition of what should be a fantastic show!
