Hosts: Paul Stroessner & Suzanne Mattaboni In this episode of the GenX Book Club, Paul is joined by fellow GenX writer Suzanne Mattaboni (Once in a Lifetime) for a heartfelt, honest, and occasionally hilarious discussion about The Perks of Being a Wallflower—Stephen Chbosky's raw and unforgettable coming-of-age story. We unpack the novel's unique letter-based format and how it allows us to experience Charlie's inner world with startling intimacy. Then we turn to the film adaptation—talking about the pitch-perfect cast (hello, Emma Watson and Ezra Miller), the soundtrack that's pure mixtape magic, and those unforgettable Rocky Horror scenes that made us feel like we were right there in the audience. And yes, we get into that tunnel scene… Suzanne couldn't help but slip into full-on mom mode at the sight of Sam standing in the back of a moving pickup truck. (“WHERE ARE THE SEATBELTS?!”)

November 2024 meets us as we're knee deep in Scorpio season. Scorpio asks us to acknowledge what we'd often rather ignore — the shadows, the secrets, the truths hidden beneath layers of ego and comfort. This month is a crucible, where transformation isn't a flash of sudden insight, but a process — one that requires us to sit, to unravel, to burn, and to refine before we emerge as a renewed version of ourselves. There's a sense of “To Be Continued…” lingering in the air. We're in the midst of a cliffhanger.Scorpio, the sign of transformation and emotional depth, reminds us that “becoming” is not a destination but an ongoing state. It's uncomfortable and confrontational. We're not who we once were, and we're not sure of who we're changing into either.Scorpio's role in the zodiac is essential. It's a sign that refuses to let us stay on the surface of Libra's superficial harmony, and it also won't allow us to catapult into Sagittarius's carefree way of living either. Not unless we've gotten raw and real with ourselves first. In Scorpio's domain, we are reminded that there's no skipping over the hard parts. We have to go through them. We have to sit in the discomfort, not as punishment, but as preparation. The sense of “becoming” is not a linear path. It's a spiral that winds through the shadows. But in time, the shadows give way to something new — something truer, something stronger, and something only you can become.Topics & Transits Include:The unvarnished energy, alchemy, and developmental process of Scorpio Scorpio's role as the gateway sign between Libra and SagittariusThe functions of Mars and Pluto as Scorpio's co-ruling planetsNew Moon in Scorpio (Nov. 1) Full Moon in Taurus (Nov. 15)Mercury entering Sagittarius (Nov. 2)Mars entering Leo (Nov. 3)Venus entering Capricorn (Nov. 11)Pluto entering Aquarius (Nov. 19)Sun entering Sagittarius (Nov. 21)Saturn Retrograde in Pisces Ends (Nov. 15)Mercury Retrograde in Sagittarius Begins (Nov. 25)Mars/Pluto Opposition (Nov. 3) - and its larger storyline over numerous yearsThe astrology of Election Day in the U.S. (Nov. 5) Plus more shenanigans... ***************************Book & Movie Recommendations for November: Books: The Perks of Being a Wallflower / The Catcher in the Rye / A Tree Grows in Brooklyn / The Alchemist / Little WomenMovies: Stand By Me / The Breakfast Club / Lady Bird / Call Me By Your Name / Spirited Away***************************DON'T FORGET TO VOTE IF YOU LIVE IN AMERICA!

Everyone say thank you to Anonymous for commissioning me and RoShawn to cover The Perks Of Being A Wallflower as a power couple! If you weren't able to make our Crowdcast, that's a shame because it was a lot of fun (and not everything in a Crowdcast makes it into the final episode) but it's still available to watch if you want. https://www.crowdcast.io/e/spoil-me-perks-of-beingThis movie was lovely and angsty and heart wrenching and really fun. I liked it a lot more than I expected to. However, I think the person it really spoke to was RoShawn. She recognized a lot of the music and a lot of the scene, and she just connected really hard with everything in a way that felt very specific. I want to thank Anonymous for their commission and for their patience, because it took so long for RoShawn and I to find the time in our schedules to fit this in. I hope that person feels it was worth it in the end! Thank you again!

This week is The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, a Novel by Stephen Chbosky. We have realized that all of our episodes tend to take on the feeling of the media we happen to be covering that week; this one is no different. We cover PTSD ( Post Traumatic Stress Disorder ) in the Novel by Stephen Chbosky: The Perks Of Being A Wallflower Deep, intense and always serious for this episode, Ryan and Mike break down what PTSD really is, and how a Therapist, like Ryan, goes about treatment. We learn what kinds of Trauma can create PTSD in a mind, and how recalling those events (triggers) can take a real, and sometimes ugly toll on those that experience this kind of Mental Health Issue Ryan gives us some insider knowledge into treatment, focusing on the method known as EMDR. Ryan shares a story from his past that has some triggers for him as an adult, and how he has learned to use these methods to see his own personal patterns, and make a change to learn and grow from his experiences, both while participating in EMDR training, and the revelations that the training revealed to him. Armchair Expert Mondays with Dax Shepard

Mae Whitman (Parenthood, Perks of Being a Wallflower, Hope Floats, Good Girls) is an American actress and singer, but paramount to all of that she is Dax's sweet bebe. Mae sits down with the Armchair Expert to discuss her 28 year long career as an actress, how she juggled acting and childhood, and she doubles down on her undying love of Taylor Swift. In this lovefest, Dax gush's over Mae's superior personality and Mae talks about her experience doing full nudity on stage. The two of them reveal their salacious plot to have more scenes together on Parenthood, they reminisce on a very specific facial expression that brought the two of them together and Monica and Dax debate the tired topic of how to pronounce Caribbean.

In 2004, now-legendary director Alfonso Cuarón turned Harry Potter into a dark, scary, morally ambiguous teen-horror film — and it was fantastic. With Disney’s 2017 BEAUTY AND THE BEAST topping $1 billion, the immensely talented Emma Watson’s star is as astronomical as ever. While she has provided us with some fantastic non-Harry Potter roles — including THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER and THE COLONY — it was this third Harry Potter entry in 2004 by Mr. Cuarón that really brought this incredible talent to my attention. I was very much NOT a Harry Potter person in 2004 (and still not so much today), and this was the first time I had interfaced with any HP property thanks to my sister’s loving prodding, insisting that this was the first “adult” HP film (thanks sis!). I was immediately blown away by three things in this film: the bizarre, dark, stylized, and weirdly funny filmmaking by Cuarón; Daniel Radcliffe playing a MUCH cooler and more badass Harry Potter than I was expecting (“badass” was NOT a word I was expecting to feel about him); but most of all, this 12 year old girl named Emma Watson playing Harry’s best buddy Hermione Granger who immediately displayed a fiery, bold, and fiercely loyal temperament — and then proceeded to steal the film with her presence, her performance, and her brilliantly written role in this tale by J.K. Rowling. Rowling herself is said to have been thrilled with both the selection of Cuarón and the finished product, and it’s not hard to see why. This is a landmark work of fantasy and probably my favorite fantasy film ever not called THE LORD OF THE RINGS, and I don’t even know what’s close. With classic supporting performances by Gary Oldman, David Thewlis, and of course Alan Rickman aka “The Doctor of Dry,” this is one for the and for all ages.
