Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! Today's episode takes a deep dive into power and tyranny as we explore the top 5 most notorious dictators in film—both real and fictional. We'll then transition to a gripping discussion on Beasts of No Nation, followed by a lighter segment exploring Tales of Africa, offering a rich tapestry of African folklore.Top 5 Dictators in Film:Idi Amin in "The Last King of Scotland" (2006) - Forest Whitaker gives a chilling portrayal of Idi Amin, the Ugandan dictator. His performance captures the charisma and volatility that characterized Amin's rule, earning Whitaker an Academy Award.Coriolanus Snow in "The Hunger Games" series - Donald Sutherland plays the cold and calculating President of Panem, a fictional dictator whose manipulative governance involves pitting district against district in deadly games.Adolf Hitler in "Downfall" (2004) - Bruno Ganz's portrayal of Hitler's final days in his Berlin bunker offers a humanizing yet horrifying glimpse into the psyche of one of history's most infamous dictators.Palpatine in the "Star Wars" series - Emperor Palpatine, a fictional dictator whose quest for control of the galaxy embodies the classic traits of tyranny and corruption, showing how power can absolutely corrupt.T'Challa in "Black Panther" (2018) - While not a dictator in the traditional sense, T'Challa's role as the king of Wakanda brings up interesting discussions on autocratic rule and benevolent dictatorship in a fictional, technologically advanced African nation.Beasts of No Nation is a harrowing look at child soldiers under the command of a warlord in an unnamed African country. Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and based on the novel by Uzodinma Iweala, the film stars Idris Elba as the charismatic and brutal Commandant. This film does not shy away from the grim realities of war and its impact on children, making it a profound piece for discussing the consequences of unchecked power and the loss of innocence.Shifting gears to a more family-friendly topic, Tales of Africa is a delightful exploration of African myths and folklore. This segment introduces kids and their parents to a world of moral tales, animal fables, and legendary heroes, offering insights into the rich cultural heritage of Africa. It's an excellent way to educate children about the diversity of narratives and the importance of storytelling in different cultures.Whether you're intrigued by the portrayal of dictators on screen, looking to understand the complex issues presented in Beasts of No Nation, or eager to journey through African folklore, today's episode has something for every dad. So tune in as we explore the realms of power, tyranny, and tradition in another thought-provoking session of Bad Dads Film Review.

The horrifying and heartbreaking tales of war and destruction in certain African nations have often prompted empathy and concern. So it's hardly surprising that the premise has been adopted in films, television shows, and even in video games over the years. Films such as The Last King of Scotland, Hotel Rwanda, and Blood Diamond have captured the tragedies as sombre reminders of those who've endured the ravages of war and political strife across the world. However, few films have focused on the plight of ‘child soldiers' who are often employed in conflicts in some war-ravaged countries in Africa. And Beasts of No Nation is one such film. The film is narrated from the perspective of a child soldier from an unnamed African nation. His tragic journey from his village to joining a rebel militia group is captured with great attention to detail by director Cary Joji Fukunaga. Fukunaga is credited with directing the critically-acclaimed first season of True Detective and the latest James Bond film No Time To Die. Beasts of No Nation won several awards and was well received in various film festivals for its compelling narrative, visuals, screenplay, and performances. The film stars Abraham Attah as the young child soldier Agu, while British star Idris Elba plays the sadistic Commandant in the film. The film highlights the various atrocities and injustice thousands of children face in Africa on a daily basis, and how they are forced to join armed militia groups. The film also triggers a discussion about trauma, mental health, and how the rest of the world has turned a blind eye to these atrocities. There are certain themes from the movie which are similar to the ones in legendary video-game developer Hideo Kojima's, critically-acclaimed Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.So that's our Lost and Found film for today and we hope you're excited to check it out. Beasts of No Nation is available to stream on Netflix. I shall be back again with another episode until then it's your host Nikhil signing off.

Beasts of no Nation is a book written by Uzodinma Iweala in 2005. It's an African Novel written in first person narrative and also a prose.
Uzodinma Iweala is the CEO of the Africa Center, a cultural institution in New York City that serves as an intellectual hub for ideas about culture, business, and policy related to the continent. A physician and the author of two novels, most recently Speak No Evil, about sexuality, race, and cultural dislocation, and Beasts of No Nation, about an African child forced to become a soldier (which became a feature film released on Netflix), Iweala is well placed to reflect on how race, culture and class have shaped the COVID-19 crisis and life, in Africa as well as in the United States.

Uzodinma Iweala’s journey to becoming the CEO of the Africa Center, a culture and policy institution located on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan at the northeast corner of Central Park, defies expectations. Prior to the role, which he began in early 2018, he had zero non-profit experience. And though the Washington, D.C., native had co-founded a small media start-up in Lagos, Nigeria, he had never lead an organization of this scale or ambition. What Iweala did understand, though, is the power of storytelling—specifically, storytelling of and about the African diaspora. Today, at 36, Iweala is confident that by harnessing storytelling he can, and will, reorient the organization, which was founded in 1984 as the Museum for African Art and saw its share of setbacks prior to his arrival. If Iweala’s diverse background and track record is any indication, the Africa Center is poised to grow into a high-impact hub for pushing conversations and greater understandings about the continent forward. Iweala’s journey has been circuitous to say the least: He wrote the novel Beasts of No Nation, which was adopted into a 2015 Netflix film directed by Cary Fukunaga and starring Idris Elba. He completed a multi-year study of HIV/AIDS in Africa, the result of which became his second book, Our Kind of People. He received an M.D. from Columbia University in 2011, co-founded and launched Ventures Africa magazine, and wrote another novel, Speak No Evil, released last year. In this episode of Time Sensitive, Iweala shares with Spencer Bailey his exceptional experiences as a writer, researcher, doctor, entrepreneur—and now, CEO.
