How to Increase Your Happiness With David Taylor And Clair Carpenter

On this episode of The Business Mastermind Podcast, Gavin is joined by David Taylor and Clair Carpenter, the co-authors of the book ‘BLISS: How to Be Truly Happy For the Rest of Your Life', to talk about happiness. David and Clair come at the world from very different points of view, David sees it through the lens of possibility, potential and purpose, Clair sees it through the rigour of science and robust research. But, both are looking for what we should be focussing on to find happiness.   KEY TAKEAWAYS It's time to put aside people's differences on psychology and psychiatry and focus on find out what works for individual people. The biggest parallel virus to Covid is mental health and we're absolutely dedicated to getting people to living the rest of their lives pretty happy. Western schooling systems are all set up to test you against a completely fictional thing that you're meant to have achieved and then you're made to focus on the bits you're not so good at. This entire way that our society is engendered and hard wired impacts the way individuals see things, and it filters into science and psychiatry. There's nothing ‘wrong' with individuals you're trying to ‘fix', it's all about playing to their strengths. We judge things from our experience, education and imagination and because we don't immediately remember everything that's happened in our lives, imagination plays a big part, and if there's a 50/50 leaning on something we tend to lean to the negativity for the protection of ourselves. It's very difficult to switch it the other way, but Clair has given a working EMBR (event, meaning, behaviour, reaction) model that gives a level playing field for real life, real people in real life situations that they can apply a gap of infinite possibility: is this definition you're giving going to help you and other people, or is it not? When we feel in the thick of a very powerful emotion, sometimes we become that emotion, rather than feel it, acknowledge it, put it to one side and take a step back and time to breathe. What if it didn't have this meaning? What if I could interpret id differently? What if I stepped into somebody else's shoes and saw this information from a different point of view? I thin those two things can really help recast and reattribute meaning. What we've all learned through lockdown is the magic of human connection, and we've all been missing that. It's enabled me to get to a point where I really value that rather than take it for granted. Rather than looking back over the last 18 months and thing “haven't I missed a lot?”, I'm coming forward from today and thinking “I've really gained a lot”. The mind is everything, what you think you do become.   BEST MOMENTS ‘Psychology is a lot of the answer that we can make life extremely happy and blissful.' ‘No event has any meaning other than the meaning you choose to give it.' ‘One of the most powerful questions we can ask ourselves if “what if?” Go and make a cup of tea.' ‘If you address the happiness of those who need help first, that's when other things happen, especially in corporate environments.' ‘We achieve success every single day, if people recorded their successes from the moment the woke up, you'd get into an abundance mindset. Celebrate everything you do.'   VALUABLE RESOURCES The Business Mastermind PodcastTo get 20% off at Knowable, go to www.knowable.fyi and enter the code GAVIN Get your copy of Survive And Thrive NOW at https://www.surviveandthrive.cc Keep Your Boat Afloat – https://survivetothrive.biz/keep-afloat gavin@gavinpreston.com    GUEST RESOURCES Clair Carpenter is the founder of The Naked Psychologist, and main psychology adviser to Naked Leader, stripping away the hype, jargon and mystery from behavioural science. Listen to why serial CEO, Stephen Kelly is obsessed with customers.  He says, growth cures almost all evils but the power is now with the buyers. It's all about trust and companies must establish themselves as thought leaders and not ask the customer the same question twice. Sellers must understand the market has changed, that 90% of the research has been done by buyers, before talking to a salesperson. Stephen says he is disappointed about the gender pay gap and that we are a long way from solving the diversity gap and suggests some ways of bridging the equality gap. Discover who his soul mate is and what he would take with him on a desert island. It was such an honour to interview my favourite CEO :-) Let us know what you think? Stephen Kelly has 35 years’ unique leadership experience in both the private and public sectors. He has held CEO positions with three successful UK & USA public companies, as well as COO of the UK Government, consistently delivering outstanding results in disruptive markets. I couldn’t be more excited to introduce you to Sam Dubs of Bluetek IT Solutions for today’s business highlight video. Let’s check out what they have to offer! I’ve worked with Sam Dubs for about 15 years, since around the time my company was just starting, and I’m so excited to introduce you to him and highlight what his company, Bluetek IT Solutions, is all about. Bluetek provides IT services to small businesses, and their goal is to eliminate your technology headaches and increase your business’ profitability.  As a business leader, there are things that keep me up at night if I’m feeling vulnerable. It’s lonely sometimes, especially if you don’t have anyone to turn to for some of your business problems. I asked Sam about some of the challenges that he loses sleep over, as a business owner himself. When Sam started consulting for local businesses, he was just an IT geek with a business. As his company grew, he found he couldn’t do it all anymore, and he had to hire technicians to replace him. The problem was that his clients hired him and wanted him to help, so his toughest challenge was finding technicians who could fill his shoes and earn the trust of his clients. As a real estate agent, I can relate to Sam’s challenges there. I then asked him what he’s most excited for in the years to come. “Reach out to Sam and his team for a free business technology assessment.” Sam is really excited about Bluetek’s all-inclusive IT package. With this package, they’ll come to your business and provide all of your IT support, including security and everything you need to keep your business running smoothly for one monthly price that’s easy to budget. We also spoke with a couple of Sam’s employees, Craig and Jake, who do a little bit of everything, from taking inbound calls to going on-site to help people solve their IT problems, which Craig and Jake say are their favorite parts of the job. As I said, I’ve been working with Bluetek for around 15 years, and our business wouldn’t be what it is now without the help of Sam and his team. If you’re a business owner or you know a business owner, reach out to Sam and his team at (717) 502-2144 for a free business technology assessment—and tell them Dave Hooke sent you! They’ll look at all of your tech needs, including data, storage, software, and more to give you a comprehensive evaluation and show you where you can develop efficiency in your business that will go straight to your bottom line and allow you to concentrate on doing what you do best: serving your clients. If you have any questions for me, don’t hesitate to reach out to the Dave Hook Team. We’d be glad to take care of you.
