“Sometimes allyship doesn't look like stepping up, it looks like stepping back and inviting others to the table,” says Camille Dundas, Principal Educator for The IDEA Practice Inc. “Statistics show that industries across the board could make serious gains in revenue per year through diversity, inclusion, and belonging efforts, but despite throwing millions of well-intentioned dollars at DE&I programs, underrepresented groups struggle to get their foot in the door, and when they do, they almost never make it up in the ranks. Something doesn't add up." Dundas joins host Manjit Minhas to discuss her journey and the power of diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I). She is a DE&I consultant specializing in allyship and anti-racism education, and also the Editor-in-Chief of Canada's largest Black online magazine ByBlacks.com. Dundas has been named among the top 100 Black Canadian Accomplished Women, and her pursuit of truth as a journalist has led to years of research into the untold stories of Black Canadian history and the persistence of anti-Black racism in Canada. Topics they cover include: 0:00: Camille's Story: “That's when I started realizing how important words were.” 8:25: Discrimination to determination: “I started noticing little things that I couldn't quite explain.” 13:35: Practicing allyship: “No matter your identity, you will need an ally at some point.” 27:50: Diversity, equity + inclusion in the workplace: “Nobody fits into one single category, and we're influenced by our socialization experiences, culture and background.” 33:20: Becoming an entrepreneur: “To see someone succeeding in a field that you didn't think was for you makes a big difference in your choices.” 43:20: Closing: “We have to be very transparent with younger women when they ask us for advice.” Presented by IG Wealth Management Learn more at ig.ca/women The views, information and opinions expressed are those of the featured guests, and not necessarily those of IG Wealth Management

This conversation explores the fatherhood experiences of Roger Dundas and Matt Prestbury. Roger Dundas is the Managing Director at Konvo Media and the Publisher/Co-Founder of ByBlacks.com. Matt Prestbury is the Founder of The Black Fathers Foundation. From hearing about foundational childhood experiences that formed their perspective on fatherhood to the importance of structure and discipline to be at your best, this conversation is packed with insightful stories, humour and wisdom. Both Roger and Matt experienced family separation and estranged relationships with their own fathers growing up, which impacted them in different ways. They talk about the challenge of living without their father's positive influence, what it meant, and how they have grown as men and dads as a result. They stress the importance of having a fatherly influence at important decision-making points in life as a young man. Matt and Roger restored the relationship with their fathers as adults and talk about the difference that makes for them now. As the conversation continues, they offer best practices and tools to help dads become better people first, and better dads as a result. They talk about helping children with their mental and emotional health, listening to your children, and giving them well-rounded experiences to help them grow into confident and successful people. A common fear they share about becoming a dad was wondering, “Am I going to do a good job?” and “Am I going to screw my kids up/have I screwed my kids up?”. Working through those fears and self-doubts has helped them become better dads and men. The conversation also brings up the importance of having community for support as a man and parent. They also discuss balance, the challenges of being a black dad, the importance of having deep and meaningful conversations with your kids, and having humility and patience as a dad. The conversation ends with two powerful messages for Black Fathers: Matt says: “Enjoy every minute of it and think about the role of being a father-figure, and how you represent yourself. We are not who the world may say we are! Be a living example of the best of black fatherhood!” Roger says: “You have to take care of yourself first! You have to work on being a better person first – body, mind and soul! Think positive thoughts and hang around positive people. “ Conversation Takeaways: Father-ly advice is important at decision making points in a child's life Becoming a better person helps you be a better dad Surrounding yourself and your children with the right people makes a big difference Conversation Highlights: 01:25 Introductions 04:24 Early childhood experiences with their fathers 12:17 Dealing with losing the relationship with their father 21:06 Fears about becoming a dad and how you start to look at life differently 26:01 Matt being a young dad and “winging it” 31:00 Helping children and supporting their mental and emotional well-being 34:10 Roger – importance of well-rounded experiences for children 36:00 Balancing it all 45:55 Experiences that have helped them become better dads 49:55 Having real conversations that men need to have 52:20 Essential skills needed for being a dad 57:15 Importance of having humility as a dad, and showing respect to your children 1:03:17 Special message for black fathers About Roger Dundas Roger is the publisher and co-founder of Byblacks.com – Canada's top ranked online magazine that focuses on black Canadian news and information. In this episode I speak with Camille Dundas, the Editor-in-Chief of Canada's largest Black online magazine ByBlacks.com and a diversity, equity and inclusion consultant specializing in anti-racism education. We had an incisive conversation where Camille talks about centering herself in her identity after years of running away from it. She opens up about a traumatizing racist incident that happened to her in broad daylight in Ottawa. She also discusses anti-Black racism in media, and how going to school in the Caribbean taught her about excellence and expecting more from herself.Real talk: Before we spoke I was a little nervous to be interviewing Camille because she is a GIANT in journalism! But I just took a deep calming breath and then we dug deep into racism in media, the plight of “diversity hires” and even touched on our experiences with wearing weaves!!! Yasss! It's the last episode of Season 1 of Turning Point and it's time for me to share my own turning point. I've had so many guests ask me about my own story this season and I'm finally ready to tell it. All of the young women of colour who have asked me for advice really inspired me to share my experiences with racism and discrimination in journalism. In speaking with them, I always try to be encouraging and supportive but it's also important to be honest and I aim to do both in this interview. I'm so grateful to my dear friend Camille Dundas, co-founder and Editor-in-Chief at ByBlacks.com, for interviewing me with compassion and empathy. I'll add that I'm appreciative of many of the experiences I had in journalism, I wouldn't be where I am today without them. However, the industry is in need of major changes, especially when it comes to how women and people of colour are treated.

Episode #84: Building and Inclusive Business with Christina SackeyfioThis episode is the audio recording of a session that took place within the Mamas & Co. community. Our members were deeply affected by the events that led to the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement around the world. It was clear, that as an international organization, and one that prided itself in being inclusive, we had to step-up and give our members, and ourselves, the opportunity to learn what we didn't know and grow by providing the platform for us to engage in uncomfortable conversations and ask the difficult questions. We asked Christina Sackeyfio of Boldly Inclusive to help us navigate the sensitive and highly important issues of diversity, inclusion and belonging. It was essential that we, as business owners and leaders create spaces where everyone, clients and employees, belong and can thrive. Christina shared her 5 pillars of building an inclusive business as well as answered hard-hitting questions from our members. This was an eye-opening talk, and it gave resources to help our members become better educated in systemic racism, the steps to take in becoming better allies, and how they can become better leaders in their own communities. The official launch of the Canadian Black Chamber of Commerce (CBCC) takes place on Thursday April 25th, 2019 at Metro Hall, 55 John Street at 6:00pm with guest panelists Nadia Theodore, Consul General of Canada to the Southeastern United States, Ron Busby, President/CEO of the U.S Black Chambers and Mary Ng, Minister of Small Business and Export Promotion. “I always say that we must ‘see it to be it' and so the importance of an ecosystem and network that will encourage and support the proliferation and success of Black-owned and Black-led businesses cannot be overstated,” says Ng. The focus of the evening's discussion will include: · Breaking Down Barriers To Growth · Supporting Black Entrepreneurship · Investing In Black-owned Businesses · Access to Capital & Funders · U.S & Global Trade The Canadian Black Chamber of Commerce is committed to aiding in the growth, development and success of Black businesses across the country. “The goal of the Chamber is to be the national voice of Black Canadian businesses and entrepreneurs,” explains founder Michael Forrest, president of Forrest Management Group. “We are dedicated to building a prosperous Black Canadian community.” More than 150 guests and dignitaries will attend the inaugural CBCC celebration – among the invited guests: Black Business Professional Association (BBPA), Afro Caribbean Business Network (ACBN), ByBlacks.com, The Jamaican-Canadian Association and Caribbean African Canadian Social Services. “I'm excited about the opportunities that the Canadian Black Chamber of Commerce can provide to Canadian businesses, especially as they seek to grow in the U.S. market and globally,” said Consul General Nadia Theodore. Adds U.S Black Chambers President Ron Busby, “Without a doubt, it will serve as a key resource to Black Canadian entrepreneurs.” A 2015 survey by the BBPA Council Advisory Body of the City of Toronto found that Black businesses who participated were predominantly self-employed (48%) and 32% of them employed two to five individuals.
