Kapwani Kiwanga talks to Ben Luke about the cultural experiences that have shaped her life and work. Kiwanga was born in Hamilton, Canada, in 1978 and lives in Paris. She works primarily in sculpture and installation but also with performance, sound and video. She explores what she has called “power asymmetries”, drawing from forgotten or unexpected histories and studies in everything from botany to sociology, to create enigmatic but alluring objects and environments in a wealth of materials. Research is at the heart of her project, but it triggers unique combinations of ideas, where forms that might initially appear entirely aesthetic and informed by Modernist geometries are in fact “documents” and “witnesses” to complex socio-political ideas and events. Materials are rarely selected simply for their visual effect; instead, Kiwanga chooses them for their historic, economic or cultural uses. A remarkable economy and precision underpins her language, through which she maximises an acute experiential balance between pleasure, curiosity and disquiet. She reflects on her new work, Trinket, for the Canada Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale, about creating a welcoming space for viewers to explore complex histories and ideas, and about balancing seduction and disruption. She reflects on the early influence of the Black Audio Film Collective and how her hanging curtains relate to Felix Gonzalez-Torres; she discusses the significance of residencies in Paris, at the Musée national d'Histoire naturelle, and in Dakar, Senegal; and she talks about why the jazz legend Sun Ra inspired her to make a work. Plus, she gives insight into her life in the studio and answers our usual questions, including: what is art for?Kapwani Kiwanga: Trinket, Canada Pavilion, 60th Venice Biennale, Italy, 20 April-24 November; Kapwani Kiwanga: The Length of the Horizon, Copenhagen Contemporary, Denmark, until 25 August. The 18th Venice Architecture Biennale was one with “no architecture,” some critics have alleged, but there was no shortage of consequential exhibition. Though all too often overlooked, Epcot's Canada Pavilion is an immersive and unforgettable experience for the senses. As we explore the Pavilion, we're surrounded by the ambient sounds of the space, all of which speak to Canada's natural beauty and wrap us in the unparalleled peace of the great outdoors. The rush of the waterfall, the lively birdsong, the gentle rustling of leaves in the wind…each, together with the pavilion's soundtrack, creates a harmonious backdrop for a wonderfully happy and relaxing experience. ----- Want More Here With The Magic? Expo 1967 was the centrepiece of Canada's 100th birthday. Amid the crowds and the pageantry, one building stood out: The Indians of Canada Pavilion. This was more than a tall glass tipi. It revealed (at least partly) Canada's sordid colonial history, and it challenged the myth of Canada being a peace-loving and tolerant society. We tell the surprising story of the historical experts who put this thing together, and the public's reaction to their work This episode was produced in May 2020 as part of Darts and Letters predecessor, Cited. Polly Leger is the co-host alongside regular host and editor Gordon Katic. This was before the wave of discoveries of unmarked graves across Canada as horrific as the descriptions of residential schools are in this episode… the reality is worse, and we made this show before all that additional evidence had been discovered. —————————-SUPPORT THE SHOW—————————- You can support the show for free by following or subscribing on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or whichever app you use. Thanks!Mike: Our record date for the podcast this week is on May 25th. That is my sister's wedding anniversary, so happy anniversary to Robin and Jim! Unfortunately, though, that wonderful celebration of their love for each other is tempered by what happened in Uvalde, Texas, yesterday. In the aftermath of such senseless, tragic loss, there is a lot of sadness, a lot of anger, a lot of calls for change to prevent something like this from happening again. We're not going to get into the details here because we don't know how many young ones listen to the show and you can learn all you need to know about it from other avenues. We don't have the answers here, nor do we pretend to have them, but you should know this. Brenda, Sophie, and I, and millions of other people are doing the only thing we can do in the face of unspeakable evil – we are praying. Praying for God to comfort those families; praying for God to provide His Strength to all of us; praying for God to send His Peace upon us all; and praying for God to bring His swift justice upon those that would harm. At the end of the day, prayer is our most important tool, and we utilize it day in and day out. Now, we are led to carry on in the best way we can, and that means trying to bring you an entertaining show to provide some comic relief from a chaotic world, so let's do just that!Connect with us! It's quite a convoluted history and it's quite incredible where some of these films played globally. Expo 1967 was the centrepiece of Canada’s 100th birthday. In a country of only 20 million, 50 million people attended Expo ’67. Amid the crowds and the pageantry, one building stood out. The Indians of Canada Pavilion. This was more than a tall glass tipi. It revealed (at least partly) Canada’s sordid colonial history, and … Continue reading #3: The Pavillion →

The new film is narrated by Short’s SCTV Castmates, Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy! 3. The film features a brand new musical score by Canadian composer Andrew Lockington. 4. TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to Attraction Checklist. This episode we go to Florida to visit the Great White North. Of course I’m talking about seeing the Circle-Vision 360 film O’ Canada! At the Canada pavilion at Epcot. Located in Epcot’s World Showcase, O’ Canada is described in the guide map by saying Discover the True North of Canada in this inspirational Circle-Vision 360 film. There are no age or height requirements for this film. Now, here are five fast fact about Epcot’s O’ Canada! 1. O’ Canada! is an Epcot opening day attraction, opening with the park on October 1, 1982. 2. Though the version of the film we will listen to today has footage from the original 1982 production, the film was updated in 2007 at the urging of the Canadian Tourism Commission. For this update, new footage was shot and Martin Short was added as the host of the film. 3. The iconic Epcot song ‘Canada - You’re A Lifelong Journey’ was updated in 2007 as well. It is now sung by Canadian Idol winner Eva Avila 4. The O’ Canada! Circle-Vision 306 theater is located in the Maple Leaf Mine in the Canada Pavilion. The theater can hold up to 600 guests per showing. 5. On November 19, 2018, Disney announced that they are working on an entirely new Circle-Vision 360 film for the Canada Pavilion that will debut in the future. Corrections & Listener Mail Corrections The Chapeau Shop on Main Street has come up on the show multiple times, regarding the old time phone. We recently received word that the phone was broken...So sad. Hopefully it will be back up and working soon. BREAKING: As of 8/15/2018, we have received pictures and tweets of the phone back in working order. Check it out now! The Contemporary Resort 3rd floor has been investigated! How visited a few weeks ago and gives his take on what is going on with this floor. The catering offices, fitness center and a few other things are discussed. Another 3rd floor comes up, this time from the Canada Pavilion in Epcot. How gives us some information on what is going on here and where to locate this area. Listener Mail Kylee writes in about the various products we have promoted. She has purchased so many of them and we thank you for your support! Diane wrote us about how she listens, keeps a running list and then refers to it during each trip. Such a neat idea to keep track of the things you want to see. Eric Jacobson brought up his neighbor restoring a small scale, sugar plantation railroad in his yard. This led to some discussion regarding regional railroads, terminology and other train facts. Very cool! Mike was our next email, discussing a WDW model in the post-show room of the Walt Disney story at the Magic Kingdom. How gets into this one, as he knows the model. This was for Disneyland and we get into what was included on this particular model. Thank you for all the emails, tweets and comments you have sent our way. We try to respond to almost everything and do our best to pick unique questions for the show. Audio Rewind Our audio rewind this month turned out to be The Adventureland Background Music! The winner is Rachel Dunlop, winning a copy of The EPCOT Explorers Encyclopedia. Great job and thanks for playing along to everybody! Huge thanks to Chris for joining us and thank you for all the trivia guesses. Main Topic Communicore West We are finally back with a full episode! After some interviews, mini-episodes and an event announcement, we felt we owed you a solid EPCOT Center attraction. A little while back, we dedicated some time to Communicore East on Episode 38. This month, we veer right (If you are going through the main entrance) and take you to Communicore West. Todd gets us started with some information on Earth Station and where it was originally planned for. The Fountain of Information is discussed, which included road signs, neon, and anything connected to communication in a fountain type of sculpture. Touchscreens are brought up frequently, including the super advanced teleconferencing system, Face to Face. This setup allowed guests to look at a cast member who was standing in front of a green-screen; How & Todd lead us in some role playing to see how this all worked.A special guest joins us, Lisa Bastoni, who is the granddaughter of Walter Einsel. We invited Lisa on because her grandfather worked on something very neat: The Age of Information. Lisa was there during the design phase and we get some major insight into how her grandfather was hired and lots of other great stuff. This was an often overlooked exhibit of Communicore, but when you look back at it now the detail and predictions are amazing. Check out Lisa and her music, at www.lisabastoni.com - We have lots more to scan and share from her, so a huge thank you goes to Lisa! >> See Lisa's "Einsel Theater" video restored here

What's this Canada Pavilion all aboot, eh? Cheese curds and Molson if ya ask us. Good thing nobody DID ask us, instead we asked a true norther and fellow podcaster, Storybook Julius from Storybook Radio, to find out exactry what is fact and what is faux about the Canada Pavilion. It's part of our ongoing Ultimate Epcot series on this week's 3 Sheets to the Mouse. This week, I pivot off of one of Storybook Radio's very first episodes, and go back in-depth on the Canada Pavilion at Epcot, providing much more of Canada's rich history as context for the design of the pavilion - all in honour of Canada's 150th birthday!
Canada Pavilion ceremony, Attic reception and Bay Lake Tower dessert party
Originally airing on July 1, Canada Day, this very special episode of Storybook Radio goes in-depth on both the Canada Pavilion and the nation of Canada, through the eyes someone for whom this land is home.
