Global food systems have been increasingly subjected to financial speculation, leading to adverse consequences for growers, consumers, and public health. But what are the systemic vulnerabilities that impact food security, equitable access to nutritious food, and the broader socio-political frameworks influencing these outcomes? Understanding the financial mechanisms shaping food production and distribution is highly relevant for health professionals, policy makers, and researchers concerned with nutrition, equity, and global health systems. This episode urges a critical re-evaluation of current food policies and invites consideration of more ethical, resilient approaches to safeguarding food systems. Professor Martin Caraher is Emeritus Professor of Food and Health Policy at the Centre for Food Policy, City St. Georges, University of London. His research encompasses food poverty, food security, the role of food aid, and the broader implications of food systems on public health. This was Steven's first Christmas as a priest and it marked his first time attending Christmas mass at a parish other than his childhood parish. In recent history, midnight mass at our local parish has been a bit of a Caraher family affair with Steven and his brother serving at the altar and his mom playing music. Now that Steven is a priest, the challenge is to integrate that into our family life. Even during non-holiday times, Steven's time is not his own in that various emergency events may pop up.At Steven's new parish, he and pastor Fr. Ted decided to celebrate Midnight mass on Christmas Eve. Both Fr. Steven and Fr. Ted planned to make this a special mass including lighting by candlelight and chanting all of the mass parts. One adjustment that Fr. Steven has been making while settling into the life of a priest is how the pacing differs from seminary. During seminary, everything was a sprint with a definite start and end. Semesters had beginning and end dates followed by a break period. In contrast, the rhythm of parish priest life is more of a marathon where the pace is set for the long run.
Episode 127 features English poet Selena Godden, Chicago musician Sima Cunningham, new music from Chatham Rabbits, and a monologue from folk duo Joselyn & Don. Plus, Tom visits with Susan Caraher of the Grand Forks Historical Commission about the Grand Forks Metropolitan Opera House.

Scott Caraher, head of senior loans at Nuveen -- manager of the Nuveen Floating Rate Income fund -- says that the higher-than-expected increase in rates that has driven up borrowing costs has made credit selection 'more important today than it has ever been.' He notes that lower-rated companies can't sustain high levels of interest payments for long levels of time. As a result, Caraher says he is underweight the lower-quality part of the market, wary of a pick-up in default rates; the flip side of the situation is an opportunity to overweight better-quality companies which are generating superior returns now and which will be more stable and solid whenever the Fed starts cutting rates int he future.

Hey Newbs! On this podcast, my friend Katie joins in to talk about our journeys with body image and what we've learned so far. As young kids, we equated skinny with healthy and beautiful. I was 7 or 8 years old and I was already worried about my body. Now as young adults, we've realized how detrimental that thought process can be and we weren't being healthy. We also talk about birth control and my experience of feeling unheard by doctors. We don't know what our passions are and what exactly we're working towards but learning how to accept ourselves is a big step we want to keep taking. This podcast was made with good intent and hoping to spread positive messages about loving yourself. But it's also okay if that process takes time.Follow Katie's Instagrams:@fitwithkaitlin@whatthehealthy@ktcaraher

It's your lucky day, punk. It's time to tear down walls and explore what the meaning of Punk Archaeology is and see what its perspective has to offer archaeology as a whole. I talk to Bill Caraher, who maintains the blog, Archaeology of the Mediterranean World and was also involved in the Archaeology Un-conference that spawned the book Punk Archaeology. We begin with his journey into archaeological through latin classes and then Classics, then after doing exams, decided to be an archaeologist. Bill has studied and worked in Greece at sites like Isthmia and led projects in Cyprus. We discuss working in different parts of the world and how archaeology can have a profound affect on local communities, especially if they feel part of the history making. Bill talks about working with temporary workers during and after the North Dakota oil boom, where resources were extracted from the Bakken formation. Hours of video, interviews and paper documentation were made in order to understand temporary living places and people's relation to place. Perhaps archaeology should be more open and encouraging, but in what ways can it develop if the same people are at the forefront? Bill also mentions that if anyone is interested in publishing that they should contact him or https://ndquarterly.org/

In this humorous but candid interview, entrepreneur and author Lee Caraher talks about how she epically failed but ultimately succeeded with her 15-year-old PR and digital marketing firm Double Forte because she didn't know how to work with millennials. She hired six, but lost them all within three months, which created a major disruption for her business. Determined to buck the negative reporting about that age cohort, Caraher did her own research on multiple generations in the workplace, combined it with her own practical experience, and started creating a culture in which all age groups could thrive and learn from one another. The effort paid off, resulting in higher-than-average retention rates, personal satisfaction for employees and a more productive and profitable business. Currently, more than half her staff is under the age of 32. Tune in to discover how Caraher became an expert on creating great multigenerational workplace teams, including: The steps she took to recover from the "body blow" she and her company endured hiring and then losing six millennials within three months. The four questions you must evaluate to ensure your employees are in a good workplace state of mind: Do I have a role that's important in this company? Am I contributing:? Am I appreciated? Am I doing something good? How the expression of appreciation is perceived and accepted differently among various generations—and how to leverage those differences to create a harmonious workplace environment. Why specific communication is a must in any office. Why "command and control" leadership doesn't work to get things done in most instances—and what approach to use instead. The new definition of employee loyalty that encourages long-term relationships—even after an employee has left your company. MORE ABOUT LEE CARAHER Lee Caraher is the CEO of Double Forte, a public relations and digital marketing firm she founded in 2002. Dush speaks with Acclaimed author Lee Caraher, to talk about her latest book, THE BOOMERANG PRINCIPLE: Inspire Lifetime Loyalty from Your Employees. She explains in the book that "Job hopping" is the new norm, especially for Millennials. However, there seems to be a deep-seated resentment about the perceived lack of loyalty shown by employees to their colleagues and employers. Caraher says that the consequence of this resentment is debilitating to businesses of all sizes across the country.
You've been taught to dream big, empowered to believe that you can accomplish absolutely anything. And then you get to work, and they've got you pushing paper. It's no surprise that companies struggle to retain Millennials who are uninspired and don't feel as if their work matters. The CEO of Double Forte PR & Digital Marketing, Lee Caraher is a lauded communication strategist, known for her practical solutions to difficult problems. She is a recognized expert in building high-performing intergenerational teams, and her work as a speaker and author seeks to demonstrate how businesses can shift the definition of company loyalty and embrace the qualities of different generations. Caraher gained this expertise the hard way, failing to retain newly hired Millennials at Double Forte when they entered the workforce in 2011. Unwilling to buy into the negative stereotypes associated with Millennials in the workplace, she created a culture where Millennials, Xers and Boomers could thrive together, and she shares this method in the book Millennials & Management. Caraher's next venture, The Boomerang Principle, hit bookshelves in April 2017. Today she discusses how the concept of loyalty has shifted in the current corporate climate and the five principles at the heart of her strategy to retain Millennials. Key Interview Takeaways Articulate your company's rally cry. Millennials need to understand why you exist as a company and what they will learn from working with you. Provide context for each new project and ask for input. Address why the work is important and discuss each person's role. Establish a culture of appreciation. Teams who receive meaningful positive feedback outperform those who don't. Millennials anticipate having up to six careers. What an Xer or Boomer might see as job-hopping, Millennials see as career-building. Loyalty to a particular company is an antiquated idea. Rather than worrying about employees leaving, focus on how to make them as productive as possible while they are there. Work to inspire loyalty after an employee has moved on. The most impactful person in a recruiting situation is the former employee who posts a positive review of your company. Should #millennials try things the old way before proposing an alternative? What's at the root of inter-generational conflict? Lee (the millennial whisperer) Caraher discusses that and much more on episode 4 of Everything Speaks.
After entrepreneur and author Lee Caraher initially failed working with young people, she decided to re-evaluate her business model. She had hired six Millennials within a short time of each other, all of which either left her company or were let go within six months. Knowing that there was more to Millennials than meets the eye, she knew she had to find out what would keep young people interested in staying with the company and how she could become part of the solution. Her current book "Millennials & Management: The Essential Guide to Making it Work at Work" is for both Millennials and those working with Millennials, a rare book format she chose so that both sides could read the material and work on the same things. If you are between 28 -45 and struggle working with or being managed by someone from the older generation, this podcast will be enlightening. Lee talks about how both Millennials and others can strive together in the workplace and effectively communicate. Learn about the 3 different sets of Millennials (29-36yrs, 23-28yrs, 16-22yrs) and how they came into the job market and through the educational system completely differently and why 67% of Millennials don't like to be called Millannials. Find out why there are different definitions and expectations that you can either meet or offended.
