I'm particularly pleased to introduce my guest today – PR Maven, Helen Neal of HN Communications, a communications agency specialising in climate and sustainability. Helen is passionate about this subject; an area she has been working in for around 7 years. She shares very useful tips and ideas for small businesses about how you can become more sustainable and care for the planet. And she explains how you can commit to becoming a B Corp – a benefit corporation - even as a small business or solopreneur. She talks about monitoring your carbon impact and explains how you can track this, linking it to your Xero or QuickBooks so that you know exactly where and what you are spending, making conscious decisions about where your money goes.Helen explains very clearly how and why the way PR and communications have been done in the past doesn't necessarily work when talking and communicating about sustainability in business; it shouldn't be the same approach. It's far more about the actions you are taking – not what you're going to do or what it looks like. It's also about traceability and being specific so you can track what you are doing back to the source and showing accountability.Like me, Helen didn't choose to run her own business, and she talks about how she built a career and was also able to be the mum that she wanted to be.If you want to know more about how you can make your business more sustainable, listening to this podcast is a must!To contact Helen:Website: https://www.hncomms.co.ukLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/helen-neal-02261129/If you would like to contact me, you can visit my www.Scottmedia.uk or join my free Facebook group here https://www.facebook.com/groups/prtribe

I do love a good rush of adrenalin. I'm not gonna lie. -Sandy Lish For most of us, the word “crisis” is a negative, but not for Sandy Lish. She loves a good crisis because she knows how to solve it. Together with longtime colleague Wendy Spivak, Sandy co-founded The Castle Group thecastlegrp.com 27 years ago. Armed with a yin/yang skillset, the two started small, in a shared office space, with their desks facing each other and 3 initial clients: the Nellie Mae Foundation, Bank of Boston (precursor to Bank of America), and The Street, an online financial services publication. With steady growth year after year, the company is thriving with specialties in PR, events, marketing, public affairs, social/digital, and crisis management and was named a Forbes Best PR Agency. Based in Boston with offices in Atlanta and Maui, Sandy and Wendy have built a company culture rooted in trust, authenticity, and a deep commitment to civic engagement. It's no wonder then, that this PR Maven is the recipient of many awards, including the Boston Business Journal Power 50. Born and raised in Brookline, MA, Sandy's family struggled to keep their home in the upscale enclave known as Chestnut Hill when her father declared bankruptcy. Determined to keep the family solvent, Sandy and her mother both worked three jobs. In this interview, Sandy reveals her natural born competitive edge and her lifelong ability to be resilient during adversity. At only 14 she found herself unsupervised and instead of doing her homework, she became an income earner, scooping ice cream, working in a supermarket, at a local pharmacy, and as a waitress. After failing to graduate with her high school class, she opted to get her GED instead. A first-generation college graduate of UMASS Amherst, Sandy is the proud mother of two who firmly believes “it's a good thing for a son and a daughter to watch their mother run a business.” For a tutorial on chutspah, resourcefulness, overcoming obstacles, and thriving under pressure, just hit that download button. #thecastlegrp #PR #marketing

Dave Lukas, The Misfit Entrepreneur_Breakthrough Entrepreneurship
This week's Misfit Entrepreneur is Kaila O'Connor. Kaila has had an interesting journey. Kaila was a shining star climbing the ranks in the PR space – her dream career until it wasn't. After a decade in the business, she found herself getting burned out and unfulfilled. She left her career and focused on herself to discover what her true path should be. She found Human Design and immersed herself in the topic, even becoming certified. Once she had alignment, she founded KMO Consulting because she recognized a niche in affiliate marketing. In less than two years, KMO generated $5+ million for its clients in affiliate revenue, secured over 1,500 top-tier media placements for its clients, trained 100+ PR professionals in Affiliate PR, and trained the entire Condé Nast editorial team (80+ editors) in affiliate marketing. By using Human Design to find alignment and focusing on a niche, Kaila found massive success and I'm excited to discuss all of it with her in this episode. www.KailaOconnor.com Kaila grew up in the Midwest and both of her parents were music teachers. A big goal of hers was to expand her perspective. She went to college to follow in her parents' footsteps but quickly found she did not want to teach music, so she decided to perform. She transferred to a music conservatory, but transferred late and needed a minor. The only thing available was PR101. She quickly realized how PR was like performing and gravitated to it. For the first 10 years, she was in the B2B corporate space. She learned about the culture and metrics around how things were done in the PR space, but measuring ROI was always hard or not possible. After 10 years, Kaila was burned out. It was then she discovered Human Design which taught her how to use her energy effectively. It was at this time, that she was recruited to an agency in LA that had a focus on affiliate. She had a knack for it. Talk to us about getting burned out and finding human design… How we feel when do something matters. Our energy and how use it matters. Human Design has 5 energy types. At the 9 min mark, Kaila discusses the ins and outs of Human Design, so it's best to listen. How can entrepreneurs incorporate human design to start or better run their business? The areas where it is applicable are in the areas of scheduling and environment. Additionally, aligning how the brain functions for it's peak times is important. Some people work in blocks, others work more free flowing. Knowing how you best operate is critical to create the environment and schedule to allow you to be most successful. To find out more about Human Design, you need a few things. In some ways, it is similar to astrology. Birth date Location Birth time Go to www.MyHumanDesign.com What are the key elements of a great PR strategy? The strategy that is most important is the authentic message for the entrepreneur and for the business. You must also serve who you are meant to serve and reaching them. PR is 3rd party validation to the customer. It takes the work and research along with testing to figure it out. Talk to us about combining affiliate marketing into their PR… Start by joining an affiliate network: Shareasale Impact Rakuten PepperJam Once you join, onboard Skimlinks Expect to set your commission rate at 20% unless your product is $500 or above. Then your commission rate can be lower. You should combine SEO with affiliate programs. Trending content and keywords is important. This shows intent for their search and buying signals. Focus on products always in stock and that are ones people use over and over. Influencers can help. Quality over quantity. Consumers are being more considerate with how they are spending. What is the most important lesson you've learned to help you succeed as an entrepreneur? Never be afraid of change. Trust that you have the right answer within. Trust your intuition. Best Quote: Trust that you have the right answer within. Trust your intuition. Kaila's Misfit 3: The opposite of victim is creativity. When you feel agitated or irritated, either wait it out – outwait it. Or use creativity to change your brains pattern. Get to know your feelings. There are 27 types of emotions to learn, understand, and identify. Trust in yourself. Don't be afraid to pave your own path. The Catch 22 of business growth stems from the fact that you need exposure to make it happen, yet it’s tough to afford a PR professional until your business has grown to a certain level. Is there a way to do it yourself? What is the best approach for pitching yourself to local or even national media outlets? Christina Nicholson spent ten years as a news anchor and reporter, and in that time she received an overwhelming number of pitches from publicists looking to earn exposure for their clients – who were approaching it the wrong way. She transitioned to the field of media relations in 2015, hoping that a traditional work schedule would be more family-friendly, but she quickly grew weary of the pressure to be in the office late and answer email at all hours. Christina created her own public relations firm in 2015. Media Maven seeks to help small business owners gain exposure via media relations, video production, writing, and blogging. She employs the lessons she learned in broadcasting to land her clients coverage on The Rachel Ray Show as well as local TV in a variety of top ten markets, and in print and digital publications including Newborn Magazine and countless websites and blogs. Today she shares her strategies for selecting clients and developing customized PR packages. Listen to understand the right way to pitch yourself to the media and establish your expertise in a particular market! Key Takeaways How Christina landed her first few clients ‘Beggars can’t be choosers’ Utilized job boards like Upwork Said ‘yes’ to everything Worked for less and over delivered The PR services Christina offers her clients Customized packages to achieve specific goals Media relations, video production, blogging and social media How Christina selects her clients Works with any business owner she can help with a great story/content Likes the restaurant, health niches Less inclined to take clients in fields she doesn’t enjoy (i.e.: finance) Christina’s process for developing a client package Establish client goals and develop customized plan Determine how the client’s product/service can solve problems Tie client expertise into newsworthy local/national story When small business owners should outsource their PR Money to invest (minimum of $2,000/month retainer, six-month contract) No time to do on their own The importance of patience and realistic expectations Traction takes time National outlets receive thousands of pitches Keep pitching from different angles Local/small opportunities can lead to national coverage Resources Master Your PR Online Course Connect with Christina Nicholson Media Maven Website Lifestyle Blog Facebook YouTube Channel LinkedIn
