Making Conversations Count: Honest, relatable conversations with business leaders
The man who invented content marketing talks about becoming a content entrepreneur Making Conversations about content entrepreneurs Count! "It takes time. Of course, you're always going to have those outliers that just make it right away. But generally, that doesn't happen...." Joe Pulizzi, Making Conversations Count - (May 2022) Psst! Low on data? Here's a lower bandwidth version for you. Who is Joe Pulizzi? Joe Pulizzi is a content 'super hero'. As the founder of The Tilt and author of "Content Inc", Joe has been helping his followers take the step toward being a successful marketing entrepreneur for more than a decade. Joe is also creating his own crypto currency. In this episode of the "Making Conversations Count" podcast, Joe explains to Wendy how important it is to be clear in your goals if you want your content to work for you. Also, why it's important to get your head around how to behave at 'the cocktail party'. If you're involved in the marketing and content side of business in any way, you need to listen to this episode... You'll learn.... In this episode of "Making Conversations Count", in which Joe Pulizzi shares his wealth of wisdom around how to be the best marketing entrepreneur, covers: The phrase ‘content marketing' and what this marketing entrepreneur had to do with its origins The truth about ‘overnight success' How will you behave at ‘the cocktail party'? Joe's conversation that counted – (and the importance of patience and listening!) A poignant moment from the episode: Wendy Being a business owner is definitely not for the faint hearted, that's for sure. There's a lot of smoke and mirrors out there, isn't there? If you believe everything that you read, it's the work life balance lifestyle. You've just touched on it yourself and Pam 2007 to 2011, it's four years of you having to work together when there's two of you in the business. It's a family business. Gosh, that's a lot riding on it. You've got to have that true belief. Joe And you've got to be a little bit crazy. And most entrepreneurs are a little bit crazy because you're audacious enough to think that you can create something out of nothing. And actually, build a business. And knowing that the failure rate is pretty high, within three years, half of businesses shut down. That don't make it. That's just within three years. That's horrible. I think it's something like within seven to ten years, only one in ten of those businesses are still going, oh, my God, what a horror stpry. But if you stick with it, and that's the opportunity too, because so many people give up and they don't realise that this is a marathon and not a sprint. Because one day, as you said before, you're on top of the world. You think, this is the greatest day of my life. I'm so glad I started a business. And the next day you're like, what did I do? This is horrible. I'm an idiot. Why did I start a business? Why did I leave a secure job with benefits or whatever? And it just goes back and forth all the time and it's very challenging. That's why my heart goes out to any entrepreneur and business owner. Wendy I was talking to somebody the other day and they're saying you've got the front door and you've got the back door. If you're in business for yourself and you're thinking about the back door, which is kind of your Plan B. It isn't looking very good for you because what you're actually doing is you're already kind of heading that way because that's where your energy is going, isn't it? Joe Yes. Wendy So, if you're an entrepreneur, it's front door only. Which I thought was quite a good way of looking at it. Joe I guess it depends on how you define risk. When I left my pretty good job in 2007, there were a lot of people came up to me. So, I can't believe you're risking that. You're giving up benefits and whatever. And I'm like, well, today, what's riskier? Me putting all my energy into somebody else's strategy that I don't have any say over and they can fire me or lay me off at any time or actually going out and doing something and having full at least as much control as you possibly can over this entity. I feel like the risky thing is to leave it up to somebody else where I have no say. It's almost like it's the same thing with stocks, right? Depending on if you look at the stock market, it's not necessarily risky, but if I invest all my money into, let's say, Twitter, I'm basically just taking a guess because I don't have anything to say. I don't have any say over the strategy of what goes on on Twitter. If I can't pick up the phone and call somebody and influence the organisational strategy, it's pretty risky. For me personally, I don't think we think about that a lot. Click here for the full transcript What IS Making Conversations Count? Before becoming a serial entrepreneur, Billy Batt worked in the oil fields, and before that, he was a teen runaway. Having left home at 13, Billy learned his way around the streets at a young age, sleeping outside in the Canadian winter and eventually joining a gang. He was selling, and doing, his share of drugs and losing friends to crack jail and violence. But after one too many near-death experiences in the same two-week window, he decided to give it all up. “I literally threw my phone in the water and left,” he recalls. “I didn't tell anybody I was leaving except for one person… I picked my brother up and we drove west, and I never looked back.” From there, Billy landed in the oil fields and found himself “back at the bottom.” He was working 97 days straight at a time for 12 to 16 hours a day, making $15 an hour. “You do stuff in the streets and you think you're mentally tough and you think you're physically tough, and then you go to the oil field,” he says. “Those guys put what you think you know to work… I thought, there's gotta to be more to life than this.” After eight years of pipe fitting and welding, running crews of 100 to 150 men in northwestern Canada, he'd had enough. He left the oil fields — and became a marketer. Three years ago, he started his own business doing marketing for contractors and never looked back. He doesn't need to. The day before this episode was recorded, Billy's lead generation and marketing agency, Chrome Leads, pulled in five figures in a single business day — far from a rare occurrence. In this episode of the Working For a Dream Podcast, Patrick and Billy talk about how Billy's earlier lives prepared him for entrepreneurship and his best marketing advice today, including his approach to a strong multi-channel referrals system. What You'll Learn: How Billy helps clients make upwards of $50,000 a month from Instagram DMs alone Why it's a “sh** business model” to buy leads and why you should be building out an organic referrals system instead The tech platform that's helped him to delegate and knowledge share with his team And much more! Favorite Quote: “You're not going to love every minute of entrepreneurship. I've taken losses. It's almost cost me everything. And still, you have to stay focused.” — Billy Batt How to Get Involved: Connect with Billy: New World Marketing Order Podcast Chrome Leads Facebook LinkedIn Instagram Connect with Patrick: LinkedIn Facebook Instagram

In his early 20s, David Meltzer quickly rose to the top of his game in the business world, becoming a millionaire. David lectured around the globe and saw rapid success in every business project he touched. But something was missing, and in his 30s as a multimillionaire, he went on a rapid downward spiral that ended in bankruptcy. It was only then that David realized, in order to revive and thrive, he needed to codify what had made him successful in the first place. He has since emerged to realize even more rewarding heights of success in business and life.David Meltzer has created a platform that uses four overarching principles—gratitude, empathy, accountability, and effective communication—and these principles have allowed him to communicate and mentor everyone from college students to c-suite executives. These four principles in everyday practice allow David to live by his mission to “make a lot of money, help a lot of people, and have a lot of fun.”FREE Friday Trainings, here it is: https://dmeltzer.com/training

Welcome to the Oceanriders Podcast, conversations with creatives, entrepreneurs, thinkers and dreamers who also happen to be surfers. Episode 5 is the second part of my conversation with Scott Martin. If you didn't get a chance to listen to it, I highly recommend downloading the first part (Episode 4) because it's packed with really interesting and useful information, and Scott is an amazing storyteller. In the previous episode, Scott described what it is to be ambitiously lazy, what he does as a Multipassionate Marketing Entrepreneur in his consulting business Groundswell Marketing. We talk about the implications of growth marketing and what it takes to generate passive income. In today's Episode, we focus on Scott's roller-coaster personal development journey with Tony Robbins and Gary Vaynerchuck, and how these experiences have helped him boost his personal and professional life. You might recall in the previous episode, Scott mentions his epiphany when he gets stranded at Miami airport without enough money to fly home. By picking up a Tony Robbins book, and applying the principles, he got a free ticket back to Canada and launched himself on the route to success. Well in this episode, we get to find out what he's been up to for the past year, and how the same Tony Robbins has helped him make positive changes all throughout his life. We then explore what it is to have a value proposition for your own business and talk about business models that are designed to give back to communities. Scott has a really interesting view on this and his experience is paving the way to innovative business models. A few years ago, Scott created an online community called Surf Art World and he shares his experience of creating a community (and now several communities) without having to create any content! So if you are a business owner or digital entrepreneur, his idea to work with competition instead of compete with it is downright genius. Finally, we get to talk about surfing, how it all started in Scott's life, and how he weaves surfing into his work/life balance. Thank you Scott for being such a fun guest to talk to! To connect with Scott, it's really easy, you can visit his Instagram pages, starting with @scottmartin_org, his marketing consultancy www.groundswell.marketing and his latest business venture www.swellness.co Scott and his associate Mallory have launched a 6 week surfer strong challenge this November on their website, and you're invited to join the party : just connect to www.swellness.co As you noticed, Scott has also dozens of other communities that he manages from Surfartworld to Outdoor.eco. Today my guest is Scott Martin. Scott is an ambitiously lazy marketing guru from Canada. He shares his incredible story about growing up in a freaking cold country. He tells how he replaced going to college with real life experience in Hawaii, and how he still travels the world in search of waves and warmth. The story of his epiphany that changed his career path when he got stranded in Miami airport with only 80 $ in his pocket is well worth a listen. The book he picked up and that changed his perspective career-wise is Awaken the Giant Within by Tony Robbins. As a marketing geek myself, our discussion gets a bit nerdy. We talk about his view of sustainable growth marketing, creating online communities and what I would call the holy grail : passive income. This is a must-listen if you are involved in any way with social media, building an online business or growing a sustainable community of followers or clients. Zapier is the app he uses to automate his posts on social media. If there are any digital nomads listening, this is definitely an episode to save and replay. Even if you're not a surfer! In fact, Scott had so many relevant things to say, I decided to split this conversation into 2 parts. In part 1 (Episode 4), we delve into Scott's background, we discuss what it is to be ambitiously lazy, growth hacking, writing a book and his latest startup : Swellness.co, a fitness and nutrition online program that he launched with fitness coach and surfer, Mallory Chapman. In part 2 (Episode 5), he tells us about the year he decided to take off, with the one and only Tony Robbins (AKA « I am not your Guru » from the Netflix documentary). He explains how this personal development journey helped him pulverize the glass ceiling. We also discuss, how, for years he's been creating online communities through hashtags (check out what he's doing with Surf Art on Instagram @surfartworld, domains and Facebook groups, and the importance of business models that give back to communities. We also discuss the fine art of coopetition in an online world. I had a great time recording this episode, Scott is a fantastic storyteller and mind-blowing person to talk to. Until next week, you can connect with Scott via his Instagram handle @scottmartin_org, through his marketing consultancy Groundswell Marketing www.groundswell.marketing and on Twitter @ScottAdamMartin Next Monday, on November 5th, Swellness is launching a 6 week surfer strong challenge, so If you would like to join the stoke, you can sign up on http://www.swellness.co The coaches are simply amazing and totally committed to getting their students on the path to becoming surfer strong .
