There are apps and devices that help us what we eat, weigh, spend, save, how much water we drink, how many steps we take. But what is all of this tracking doing for us? Are we using these tools and this information to improve our wellbeing or have we succumbed to the tyranny of tracking? Joining me on the podcast is registered dietitian and workplace wellness consultant Cassie Christopher. Tracking is a a topic that comes up a lot for each of us in the coaching work that we do and in this episode, we explore what tracking offers, where it often goes wrong, and how we can leverage the benefits without it becoming an unhealthy or unhelpful practice.  I'm also excited to share that the Weighless Program is once again accepting new members! Why a healthy self-image is essential to your future growth

How we see ourselves has an enormous impact on our mental health and wellbeing, how we function in our relationships, even what sort of goals we set for ourselves. Often, we believe that achieving those goals will improve our self-image and make us feel better about ourselves. But usually, it happens the other way around. Our self-image is often very distorted. Others may barely notice “imperfections” that are all we can see when we look in the mirror. And, by the same token, we can also take steps to heal poor self-image without actually changing anything about the way we look. Often it starts by examining our beliefs about how we SHOULD look. Joining me today to talk about all of this is Cassie Christopher, whom you know from several past episodes. Cassie is a registered dietitian, workplace wellness expert, speaker, and coach. Repairing body image is a big part of Cassie's work. She and I are also teaming up to offer a special program this October focusing on on Body Image Repair and Resilience.  Key Takeaways: We form our self-image by comparing ourselves against cultural ideals, which often reflect groups with more power and/or money. Even those whose outward appearance conforms to the cultural ideal often suffer from poor self-image.  Even if we don't have the power to change the system, seeing how it operates gives us more power to decide how we engage with it Self-worth that is based largely on how we compare to others is never as solid as self-worth that is based on our own intrinsic values.  We are often completely unaware of the degree to which negative self-perception is impacting our quality of life.  Accepting and celebrating the ways in which we diverge from the “ideal” can be an empowering first step.  Mentioned:Body Image Repair & Resilience programBeing good enough (Change Academy Ep. #28)Body Image Self AssessmentMore about Cassie Christopher's work ★ Support this podcast ★

This week on the podcast I'm talking with Cassie Christopher, a dietician and health coach and an emotional eating expert.    Cassie lives in the Seattle area and helps women who have lost their trust and faith in themselves around food and body image to regain their confidence and lose weight in a healthy, sustainable way through her "Courage to Trust" method. Our conversation is all about sugar and navigating urges. There are many parallels between the urges to eat sugar and drink alcohol. In fact, in recovery programs people who have abused alcohol often develop sugar habits as well. There is absolutely a dopamine connection between the two and we discuss it.  Cassie has developed an urge meditation tool (focused on food cravings) that can help when you're experiencing an alcohol craving too. The weight loss world can be an overwhelming place to navigate. There is SO much conflicting information out there and it's hard to know who you can trust. For the longest time, the diet industry had pretty much everyone convinced that in order to lose weight, you had to eat less, move more, and that would be enough. And when we quickly learned that this is rarely enough, “experts” started piping in and everyone had a theory on the royal road to weight loss: low fat, low carb, keto, macros…nevermind the crazy fad diets out there – I even remember trying to live on grapefruits for awhile. In recent years, new movements started popping up – Health At Every Size (HAES), body positivity, intuitive eating, the antidiet, and more – aimed at encouraging us to love our bodies as they are, look beyond weight loss for happiness, and importantly, to heal us from all the trauma caused by diet culture over the years. And while I completely embrace body acceptance, living life beyond the scale, and healing diet trauma, these movements have also left many women feeling very alone, and sometimes even judged negatively for wanting to lose weight. So in this episode, I am joined by dietician and fellow weight loss coach Cassie Christopher. Together we navigate through all of this with the goal of illustrating for you that there is a middle ground in weight loss. There are places where you can learn to both accept your body AND make the healthy changes you want. There are places where you can learn how to live the life you want and deserve right now WHILE you lose your weight. And there are places where you can heal from years of diet trauma, and learn how to feed your body and soul from a place of self-love, self-compassion, and knowing what's truly right from you, no matter what the diet industry has to say about that. Could the way you feel about your body and attractiveness, be negatively impacting your love life? In this episode, Lyn talks to Cassie Christopher, a dietician and health coach, about the ways in which we can learn to love ourselves and feel better, so we can attract and enjoy healthier, loving relationships. KEY TAKEAWAYS Quite often any unhealthy relationship with food is connected to our emotional state, and may even be a trauma response. We either restrict eating, binge eat or over eat, usually because we want to feel safe, be in control and to numb our feelings, in an effort to try to make ourselves feel better. Many women believe that in order to be successful in the dating world, they must be more beautiful and conform to unrealistic 'social standards' regarding their body size and image. In the process of healing emotional eating, we must first accept how we feel about ourselves. To combat our bad eating habits and enter a place of empowement, we must work on being fully present and aware of how we feel. An easy exercise to ground ourselves in the moment, is to focus on our breathing and spend a minute taking some slow deep breaths. BEST MOMENTS 'The reason that women want to heal emotional eating is that they want to start dating' 'Women have to do a lot of un-learning about what they've been told about their bodies' 'We're not problem solving in a way that is punishing'  VALUABLE RESOURCES Hearts Entwined Podcast Apple Podcasts (iTunes) Spotify Stitcher      ABOUT THE GUEST Cassie Christopher - Dietician and Health Coach Cassie Christopher is a body-positive Registered Dietitian who is passionate about helping women 45+ heal emotional eating by loving themselves well. -Grad school for nutrition, type A personality, super stressed--> emotional eating to cope resulted in feeling out of control around food, weight gain, no energy, etc. -Became a Registered Dietitian and nothing I had learned seemed to help. If anything diets and the belief that food is medicine were making it worse. -Fast forward several years, new Mom, stressful time, using food to cope again. Realized I felt unworthy of self-care because I believed they were more worthy of care. Worked on autoimmune issues with Naturopath, Intensive therapy... stopped eating and began helping other people with overeating and weight loss, and they were successful.  -Then the pandemic happened. I would read at the dinner table with my family, I realized books and other acceptable "vices" were my new food for coping. I was using other things to numb rather than being present in my life.  -Through intense self-development, I realized I still wasn't feeling my feelings, I started practicing getting present to my feelings. Part of this journey was letting go of old beliefs that my desires and feelings were suspect at best and likely sinful. I realized I was looking for pleasure from food/escape, rather than from identifying and pursuing things I enjoy.  -I started to feel very self-conscious about my body feeling like I needed to look like an "after" photo if I was going to help people lose weight. My heart was breaking over my clients and prospects using words like "disgust" and feeling like they hated mirrors when they thought about their bodies. I began redefining beauty for myself and studying how to improve body image. -Many women believe weight loss will help them feel comfortable in their own skin when in reality weight loss helps them fit in with cultural (and patriarchal) beauty norms. My eyes were opened to how these cultural norms stop women from living the lives they were meant to live and keep them small.  -I began implementing techniques to help my clients stay in the present with their feelings, body acceptance work, and less of a focus on weight loss so women can feel in control around food and comfortable in their own skin. Focusing on self-care in 4 key areas.  FIND HER HERE:  Website and blog:http://www.cassiechristopher.net ( www.cassiechristopher.net)  Free Facebook group: http://facebook.com/groups/emotionaleatingandwomensweightloss ( facebook.com/groups/emotionaleatingandwomensweightloss)  Instagram: @CassieChristopherRD Freebie URL: Cassiechristopher.net/Free You're Done Dieting, But Still Want to Heal Emotional Eating: A Roadmap to Achieve Peace and Freedom with Food and to Feel Comfortable In Your Own Skin, for Women over 45 Who Have Tried it All Best way to connect: send me an email: hi@cassiechristopher.net CONNECT WITH JENN: https://linktr.ee/momofeighteen The podcast is for those of you who know that there is more to life and that our true authentic souls are built for greatness.  Our bodies use food as fuel, to provide energy for our brain, muscles, heart and lungs. But unlike physical hunger, upsetting thoughts  like fatigue, exhaustion, guilt, anger, grief, despair,   can lead to reaching for food for comfort.During challenging times, it is easier to subconsciously respond to those emotions by reaching for food, aka emotional eating.  Studies show that emotional eating can lead to obesity, food dependency, and a host of other ailments associated with unhealthy weight gain. The holiday season is around the corner, you may not be able to attend large family gatherings because it is not the smartest choice for your loved one;  your loved one may not be feeling well, they prefer to stay at home; Or this is the first holiday season without your spouse. You are in the throes of grief, you don't feel like being around other people - that is okay. All the above circumstances can unconsciously lead to reaching food.In this week's episode, Cassie Christopher, a body-positive Registered Dietitian, breaks down what causes emotional eating, in addition she teaches us healthier ways to view food and develop mindful eating habits, how to recognize triggers that lead to emotional eating; Learning to use food as a fuel for the body, and healthier ways to manage our emotions. Cassie explains the difference between being a registered dietician and a nutritionist.  It is someone who has education and credentials in the area of nutrition and is able to provide medical nutritional medicine. The difference is anyone can call themselves a nutritionist, but a registered dietician does have those credentials.Cassie focuses on women 45 and up to deal with emotional eating.Although traditional registered dieticians may start with a medical history, Cassie looks more to the emotional reasons for their issues with food, and with problems of using food to numb or avoid feeling your feelings. She talks about self-talk, choices we make every day, and the circle of feeling good and then afterwards feeling bad.  She says the positive to that circle, or that loop is that there is multiple places to intervene.  The first place to start is why are you eating, and how you can feel those instead. She said the prevailing bad advice is "just don't do it".   Cassie said she struggled herself, and even with all the education she had on the subject, she still had to come to terms with feeling the emotion, and that is not an easy thing to do.  She said you don't just numb the bad feelings, you also numb the good ones too.  She also shares that stress is the biggest emotion that people try to numb, and that "stress" is the "bottom layer of the cheesecake".You can find Cassie at www.cassiechristopher.net.  And if you go to www.cassiechristopher.net/free, you can get a free step by step what it's going to get towards healing, which doesn't have a lot to do with food. Such a lovely conversation with Cassie.   Being someone who deals with women with midlife bulimia she was pleased to be on the show to be able to share her story and to say "you're not alone".Cassie, herself, struggled with emotional eating, as was her family.  Even though her education, she realized she was more able to help others than herself!   This I could relate to because my daughter said the same about her education through psychology.Cassie said there are four specific areas that matter when it comes to self-care and can free you from emotional eating.Cassie does share those four pillars of self-care, starting with hormones.  She speaks to our "toxic" vocabulary, and she does stress (pun intended) that stress is a part of hormone imbalance as is lack of sleep, and so many more points covered. You can find out more about Cassie at www.cassiechristopher.netMore about Cassie:I'm Cassie Christopher, a Registered Dietitian and Health Coach. As a Masters-trained Registered Dietitian Nutritionist who has helped hundreds of clients reach their health goals, I've got more than a soapbox to stand on.  Previously, I spent my time translating personal genetic and blood data, along with the latest scientific evidence to make my clients healthier. If you are on a journey to lose weight, it can be stressful to make sudden changes in your eating and exercise habits. All of this new pressure triggers your body to release the hormone cortisol – which is responsible for why you feel stressed. Cortisol causes the body to go into fat storage mode instead of fat-burning mode, which can cause your weight loss to become stagnant or even intensify. It also can cause you to have more cravings making eating healthy that much more difficult. These are a couple of the reasons why we must recognize the triggers for Cortisol and try to minimize them where we can. This week, my guest on the show, Cassie Christopher, is a Registered Dietitian and Mom to a busy toddler. She supports postmenopausal women to get a handle on emotional eating to feel more confident in their bodies without depriving themselves of what makes them happy in life. In this episode, we discuss triggers that can raise your cortisol, how weight loss is affected by cortisol levels when you are going through menopause, and how to make shifts in your life and routine to lower cortisol in your body.
